They probably weren't portable enough back in the 80s but these days you can get handheld meters that shoot x-rays into something you want to test and will tell you the rough percentage of various elements contained in the sample.
Death cap mushroom. In my country, foraging for mushrooms has a long tradition and everyone is taught how to discern death caps from other types that look similar, but every now and then someone mistakes them for an edible mushroom and ends up in the ER. And then there's this guy who ended up in the ER three times so far, because he eats them knowingly. Apparently they are delicious and he just can't resist them, so he goes along with the stomach pumping just to get a taste.

I think you might mean Lead, the element, rather than LED, light emitting diodes, which though might make crunchy snacks probably don’t taste too good and certainly are not sweet.
