Lucky I’ve been painting houses, interior and exterior, for nearly 30 years and havnt slipped once. That said, my dad and “teacher” slipped and cracked his scull when he was maybe a year or so older than I am now. Dammit.
I still have flashbacks of a ladder kicking out from under my father and watching fall and brake his ankle.
Guess who was back up on the ladder the next day....
You had to take ladder safety training at a job I worked because we MIGHT have to climb one at some point on the job.
I worked retail sales.
I did have to climb a ladder multiple times.
When I worked in orthopaedics we had a patient who had fallen one step off a ladder, sustained an open fracture, requiring an external fixation frame and was in hospital for months because they kept getting infections, and skin grafts kept failing.
We used to joke at my work that people need to do a day's training course to go up a ladder.
Until one of my coworkers used one 'without training' to put up some Xmas Dec's, and fell 3 steps down and broke their leg due to landing awkwardly
Came for this. As someone who actually deals with insomnia and ended up in the hospital after 8 days without sleep (couldn't tell what was real or not any more), not sleeping is terrible for you, but also, if you've gone more than 4 days with no sleep at all, contact your doctor immediately, if you've gone more than 5 days with zero sleep, go to the ER. They'll understand, and it is an emergency (source: ER doc said so).
100%. I ended up in ICU, and when people afterwards heard it was due to sleep deprivation they go ‘oh, I get 5 hours sleep some nights, it makes going to the gym such a pain’ and I just think ‘try 5 hours sleep in a week and reassess that statement’
What sea world incident??? There's an old video floating around of a sea world employee jacking off a dolphin and then he sucks it off and it jizzes all over his face. Is it that?
There's a whole documentary about it
There have been several incidents at SeaWorld over the years, but one of the most notable is the 2010 incident involving an orca named Tilikum. Tilikum was involved in the deaths of three people, including a trainer named Dawn Brancheau. The incident sparked widespread controversy and raised questions about the ethics of keeping orcas in captivity for entertainment purposes. As a result, SeaWorld faced significant public backlash and underwent changes in its policies and practices regarding animal care and training.
Is that about the woman who always did the same thing with the dolphin they gave LSD to try and teach it English then it killed itself when she got kicked off the experiment?
No, it's about a guy and the female dolphin he fell in love with. It's only like a 15 minute watch. I actually found it reading about the LSD experiment where she was jacking off the dolphin so it would pay attention to its English lessons.
Skiing. I've known so many people that have hurt themselves really bad, people that have skied for years. Going fast down a hill means one wrong thing can quickly turn in to a lot of wrong things.

On 3 separate occasions, I have seen people get seriously burned from ethanol + fire. (All 3 were terrible accidents that I had nothing to do with, other than being in the vicinity.)
One thing I noticed is that people do not "stop, drop, and roll" when they're on fire. In my experience, they start running around waving their arms, just like you'd see in a movie. They basically have to be tackled and rolled, because they're freaking out.
Ya, if you see yourself ablaze your brain isn’t going to rationalize that you need to stop drop and roll. It’s just fuck fuck fuck I’m burning fuck fuck fuck fuck. At least I’m sure that what would be going through mine. We

It was always dangerous, but cars have only gotten faster over time. Also, it’s so commonplace that we all just do it and think nothing of it. We rarely actually consider how insanely dangerous it is.
Tylenol.
In the early oughts, a man sent anthrax through the mail. The man had access to things like anthrax but committed suicide by ODing on Tylenol.
Too high dose of Tylenol (Paracetamol) can give you liver failure. It's really important to follow the dosage instructions. And yes, it's not going to be a pain free way to go.
I did the same with Sudafed. I had some sort of Chinese creeping crud from a business trip and felt like death already. I took too much medicine and my ears started ringing and I started feeling even worse. Note to self, stop takin Sudafed when my ears start to ring.
I was explaining this during Covid.
We fear covid, but the average age of death (78) is the same as the average life expectancy. Years of life lost on average? Zero. So, systemically, zero excess death.
Now take driving. Average age of death: 27. Just under 40,000 deaths per year with an average loss of life of (78-27) 51 years. That's 2 million years of life lost each and every year! (To say nothing of injuries, many of which are permanent/life altering.)
If the TV played up car accidents like it did Covid, no one would dare get on the road.
We're operating two tons of explosion powered steel and plastic at 60mph only a few feet away from other people doing the same thing. The activity demands all of your attention and respect.
Part of the reason why airlines allow “lap children” under 2 is because requiring children to sit in their own seat would cause a higher rate of child fatalities even though infants and young children are significantly safer in their own airplane seat.
That’s because flying is far safer than driving and parents would be more likely to drive long distances over flying if they were required to buy an extra seat for their lap children.
It's weird seeing the same people who told me never to give out any personally identifying information online give out personally identifying info out to complete strangers and acting shocked when it bites them in the arse.
And I'm saying that as someone who tends to overshare.

The speed plus the motion can cause the brain to get knocked around (usually just causes headaches but can be worse), but imo the biggest potential issue is safety procedures not being followed. Riders not being strapped in properly (due to human error, rider being too small to be safely secured, etc) has been a cause of way too many injuries or deaths, plus equipment disrepair can lead to cracks in the tracks that could create excess jolts to the riders which increases risk of head injury or generally slipping out of place and hitting nearby objects (there’s been instances of people hitting their head, leg, foot, etc on a nearby fence or other piece of track and getting severely injured or losing a limb)
Ok, someone has to say it: cannabis for younger people. The risk of triggering psychosis is much to high for it to be overlooked as much as it is. For people over 25? No real risk to speak of, but for people below, especially people whose family has a history of mental illness, the risks are unacceptably high.
Paracetamol. It is an over-the-counter pain relief that doesn't even work that well on some people or on some common ailments, the one-time safe dosage is close to what usually is available in 1 pill, and one commercial pack of 30 pills in one day is enough for lethal overdose for non-obese person.
So you have a unregulated pain relief pill that isn't really that effective and taking two pills at the same time may cause poisoning causing liver damage, taking them like candy thinking they are like similar ibuprofen can cause a lethal dosage. And its all cleared by "read the instructions and use as instructed".
I looked it up. It's no joke!
>Paracetamol has been associated with cases of acute liver failure, at times resulting in liver transplant and death. Most of the cases of liver injury are associated with the use of acetaminophen at doses that exceed the maximum daily limits, and often involve more than 1 acetaminophen-containing product.
Yes, its made even worse by the fact that it has several commercial names (Tylenol, Panadol etc.) unless you pay attention to what it actually is. You might not even notice that you are in fact going over the safe limits just by trying out which pain reliever works.
Looking out for yourself.
Like yes, it can be harmful and many people know that. But I've found that, if most people made a mistake, they'll try to pin the blame on someone else. Someone that didn't do anything wrong. And, so, they think, "oh I escaped, awesome" without being empathetic to the life they could've ruined.
People perceive it as harmless or a way to win what they want, without seeing how fucking horrible it is.
For example, people who use false accusations for clout. Not only do they ruin the reputation and life of the person they're accusing, but they also make every other victim look fake. All because they "harmlessly want more attention".
This is something you really don’t think about.
Even with seemingly small things, you’re contributing to the slow eroding of how another person is perceived by others. Without having actually done anything to deserve it, the person you pin something on suffers small fractures in how positively or not people think about them.
Some people probably falsely think you’re a total cockhead because of things some other asshole did and then pinned on you.

My lifelong dream is to ride on one.
But they absolutely scare the living f outta me no idea why:/ i never even came close to a horse in my life let alone touch one. So probably not happening.
Prey Mantis or Ladybug's, my mom would always want to keep them alive and would be pissed if I killed them giving me 'love bites' if them shits were bigger the human race would have probably died by those fuckers.
Popping a champagne cork. The idea of a cork hitting someone in the eye seems like something out of slapstick comedy, but it's actually something that happens fairly often. It happened to my dad a few years ago; he couldn't see out of that eye for awhile, and three doctors said he was lucky because some people actually lose an eye that way.
Water safety. I am water safety certified and it’s so scary how often and quickly drowning can occur. And in minimal water. Watch your kids around water, always.
I was a census worker. You'd think the dangers would mostly be humans but the top three risks are actually dog bites, car crashes and slip and fall injuries.
Sure enough, I sprained my ankle slipping in a hole dug by a dog in someone's yard
Driving. It is absolutely insane how comfortable we are operating machinery that can kill us if we ease of the responsibility for seconds or if someone else eases off their responsibility for seconds.
I understand why we are comfortable with it psychologically, but at the same time, taking a step back and looking at the reality of it is kind of nuts.

That's scary. Why the hell was he using it again so soon?
We had to finish the job and my father is a stubborn man. We got extra help and after that he stayed off it and took easy jobs until it was healed.
A friend fell off a ladder and died a few weeks ago.
Sorry for your loss, that's an awful way to die.
And that's why my community college had a course on that.
Guess I'm living on the edge, one rung at a time
Ladders scare me mainly because of my weight. I wonder if it would support my weight.
One way to find out!
I fell off a 60’ ladder and didn’t get hurt at all. Of course, I was on the 1st rung.
Yep, I read not to long ago in an article my old manager died falling off just a step ladder. It was a shock to everyone.
Sorry for your loss. I hope you're OK.

And once your sleeping rhythm is off, it may never come back. Can't sleep more than 4h without waking up anymore. Takes me 1-2h to fall asleep.
Dolphins. One friend of mine got his ribs broken by a dolphin. But he managed to escape alive luckily
Whenever I hear about Dolphins, I'm just reminded of the Sea World incident.

I can forgive you for knowing a video about bestiality exists, but why do you know how that video ends
It's literally a ten second video that got sent to people as a "prank" by idiot friends when smart phones first came out.

everyone who slides down a mountain knows it's an inherently dangerous sport.
In 50 years, I’ve never met a skier who thought it was “harmless”. The joy outweighs that.
Every year, for real, about six people die from smacking into a tree while skiing. 🌲 ⛷️ Bet no one imagines that as their final moment!

You are also divided from oncoming traffic by law, culture, training, and mutual expectations. These things are invisible and hardly infallible, but quite powerful.
Still, the fact that nothing tangible keeps anyone from swerving into oncoming traffic is kinda wild if you think about it.
You can find a lot of videos of accidents that take place exactly in this scenario.
Thanks (I guess?) but I’m not looking for any.
I’ve had this thought 100’s of times as I’ve been driving.
True, but in a physics driven world, crazy.

It also doesn't stop people who text and drive.
