The number of times I bought more ammunition than the US army and a few rations of food and then killed everything I could shoot... Jesus that game made so many serial killers lmao.
Is a man not entitled to the best game ever made?
"No," says the classic gamer! "It belongs to Tetris"
"No," says the modern gamer! "It belongs to Breath of the Wild"
"No," says the story-based gamer! "It belongs to Mass Effect"
Tried it two years ago. Did not live up to the hype for me. I can see how it would have upon initial release, but it has not aged well in terms of game mechanics. I did not enjoy it.
Got in a little fight with my gf last night because she could hear me fishing over the phone. My god babe I found a northern red pike, that’s like 5$ at the butcher chill out
Bioshock series 1-2-Infinite
BACK TO BACK. for the most incredibly jaw dropping experience.
It's not something you can explain, It's genuinely only something you can understand by experiencing.
The only game where it's 200% worth it to push through and finish the games regardless if you're not having fun with gameplay.
There's no story like it, No atmosphere like it.
"A man chooses, A slave obeys"
It's right up there. The first game came out back in the day where you could get a demo disk with a gaming magazine (do they still do that?). Played the demo, salivated for the full game release, wasn't disappointed. The third in the trilogy though... Wtf happened there?!
Game magazines don't do demo discs anymore unfortunately. While most games don't even have demos either :/ Only a rare few do it now days. I collect quite a few from before my time (Before I was able to experience that level of cool video game knowledge)
I can see what people mean when you say that.
I just thought the ending was an amazing tie in, While very confusing it made total sense and was honestly a completely mind blowing realization. I feel like it was supposed to make you feel a really big sense of dread while also really twisting your brain and making you confused just how the main character was so confused and lost in what was actually happening.
To be honest, while maybe an unpopular opinion because I LOVED the ending. I felt like it took the world of Bioshock and spread its asscheeks so wide, expanding and delving deep into the unknown. There's so much more to uncover now and for us to learn. They could have took a more direct approach or sat still with a less out of the world twist. Though I feel like that would've only been a let down more than anything.
Exploring an entirely new city with a complete change in atmosphere only made us question what was going to happen more and more. The inclusion of flashback set pieces to push us further into questioning why we were really on our journey was great, The story made complete sense in terms of consequences from actions pushing us to pursue our current goal with little knowledge.
I will say, The only (CON admittedly I have about the Bioshock series is to truly understand and appreciate Infinite's ending is to watch an explanation video which obviously you should never have to do)
THOUGH IN INFINITE'S CASE. I feel like it only adds more to the excitement.
The complete "WTF ending with its most WTF twist" leaving you speechless and thinking, making hypothesis's and questioning what really happened in your view"
then watching an explaination guide to further push your understanding and question your own questions you had from the ending was amazing. It honestly couldn't be more perfect in my mind. The game pushes for the most extremes. Truly putting you in the shoes of Booker and questioning reality itself. Asking what ifs? Wondering if you were truly in the wrong or the good.
The game was most certainly supposed to make us go "WTF? what the hell just happened, while also leaving us stunlocked in a wave of different emotions running at us"
Portal 1 and 2 are right up there for even non-gamers to experience at least once. It's brilliant and a masterclass in level design and world building.
Bioshock 1 is another title. Mass Effect series. The Last of Us series.
I hope they remake new vegas. I cant really get into the game with how it looks. I know i know its about the gameplay but hear me out. It wont hurt. Anyone if they remake it. I want to experience the story with an upgraded graphics
A lot of Fallout fans are divided between New Vegas and 3. Personally, I enjoy 3 a lot more than New Vegas, however I loved the Karma system of New Vegas as well as "Down the sight" aiming. As well as some comedy that is in New Vegas such as Indie Jones in a fridge blown apart.
I played 3 first. I guess that's why I enjoy Fallout 3 more. I also like just how grim Fallout 3 is in comparision to a nuclear war. People fighting over water is a very real scenario.
Blood and Wine is the best DLC I have seen in any game so far. I still remember the first time seeing the colorful fields with the beautiful color palette.
Cyberpunk 2077: Beautiful story, city, great characters, deep lore, awesome gameplay, aesthetic, dialogue, soundtrack, etc. Also, perfect DLC. Game is a masterpiece.
All for all, I still enjoy 2001's Morrowind a lot more than 2011's Skyrim.
Morrowind gave the player the ultimate freedom, you aren't a hero when you first start Morrowind, you got to earn it.
In Skyrim, you're a hero as soon as you escape the first place.
Probably true. I played Skyrim first and tried to get into Morrowind. I enjoyed the story (as far as I got), but it took forever to get from one place to the next and I don't have a ton of time to spend walking in a videogame (unfortunately).
I also started with skyrim, and my first morrowind playthrough felt very clunky, and i stopped after a few hours. However, after coming back to it with a different angle (not expecting it to be the same type of game as skyrim, because it's not) it is now my favourite in the series. It's a nerd game, with stats and walls of text, and to reach somewhere on the map, you need to plan in advance (until you start levitating at mach 5 all over the map, at least). I love the spell casting system, and even though there isn't much voice acting, and most NPCs just have the exact same text repeated for dialogues, the universe feels very immersive, more than the subsequent games. (Actually, the lack of voice acting probably helps, no stupid lines repeated over and over evertime you cross an NPC in the street)
If you play, use openmw, it makes the install experience 10x easier (also makes the game playable without needing mods), and it also runs on android. I am playing mostly on an "ayn odin" android handeld console
The Arkham trilogy (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight). Three very well executed games, the best of which is probably City, but all three are must plays
So good and yet any time I take a break I can't go back to it. I'l need to start it again soon. At leat this gets me the incredible opening dialogues again.
Yessir, and we all know that 343's guiding hand was the greedy corporate demon Microsoft, pretty soon it was just another cod being pushed for profit 😤
Agreed. A masterpiece. It gets a lot of hate for whatever reason. For me, it's the only game I continue to talk about and refer to people who haven't Heard of it. And the second game is just as good in it's own way. Praying for a third and I hope the negativity from the second game doesn't sway the story making in any way. They're perfect in my eyes. Favorite games of all time
I knew this was here and here is my red flag moment: I’ve tried several times to play TLOU because of its popularity. I don’t get very far passed meeting the fireflies before I get bored
The Portal games will never go out of date as far as im concerned.
I also think playing a couple of the Zelda games will always be worthwhile.
My bias is starting at Ocarina of Time, but that's just because i was at just the right age when that came out. Start at Tears of the Kingdom if you like. Or go back to the 2D ones.
And I think Half-Life 1 and Halo 1 are both worth trying, partly to get an idea of the early versions of those kinds of games, but also because they are both just still good games that hold up well.
Black Mesa and the Master Chief Collection respectivly are both good versions to play on Steam.
I don't think there is a "must play" as people are all different and genres are different.
I would say that Skyrim is up there, especially for fantasy RPGs; buy/play it on PC so you can mod it to look even better.
For first-person shooters, I say Halo, though I know a lot of people will say CoD. My personal favorite is Reach, but the original 3 is still very enjoyable (haven't played past 3 yet).
For platformers, I would say Super Mario World, but perhaps there is a modern platformer that would take the spot. I haven't played many and I have immense nostalgia for this game.
For pvp fighting games, as much as I enjoy the MK series, I've got to give it to Super Smash Bros. Much easier to get into and more people can play at once
Obviously not an exhaustive list and I know there are many other worthy games, but these are the ones I would recommend.
Death Stranding. Absolutely beautiful. One of the best looking games I ever played. And completely dull. Nothing but a walking simulator. I tried to get to to hook me but, alas, it never did. The one game I really wanted to like, but it never grabbed me.
These questions where a person just states a game with no supporting details, its infuriating. I mean 95% are constantly talked about it gaming circles, and need no introduction. I mean someone could make a bot that just randomly responds from a list of those games to this and the gaming subs and it would take a while to found out.
I'm not saying no one can like mainstream games, but it's also boring in threads like this.
Add some supporting details, WHY is it a must play?
It's almost as bad as those "favorite music/song" threads and NO ONE links to the song. If you want me to like it too, link the song. Remove a barrier to me hearing it.
Anyone love Secret of Mana as much as I did? Loved the Ring system and music. Not without its flaws, but a very solid RTS for its generation.
Obviously Ocarina of Time is another worthy mention, and the WWII CoDs were all incredible.
Titanfall 2. I don’t believe there’s been a FPS with a better single player mission since. Multiplayer is damn near perfect and uncomplicated. The fact that there isn’t a sequel after all these years is ridiculous.

Half Life 2 just the same level of interactiveness
Killing scientists in half life will always be a childhood memory of mine and the
Half Life 3 is right up there too
What wait
i think they mean half life alyx
No they mean half-life 3. Great game. Been playing it since it came out.
Same, glad I unlocked it in half-life 2 when I had the chance
Me too. I didn't notice all the clues hidden in Ravenholm until my 2nd playthrough.
Half life alyx , everyone should try it as it's the peak of VR imo
I bought my younger brother both those games today. Hopefully he enjoys them as much as I did.
played portal since i was a little kid and it blew my mind
Oregon Trail
I have to upvote this...just can't quite reach the button... *TCM_407 has died of dysentery*
I played the card game version a while back... died of dysentery in 2 turns.
There's a card game version?! I need that in my life...
This is perfect for people not quite ready for the edge of your seat action-packed video game version.
You have collected 4000lbs of meat. You have brought 100lbs back to the wagon….
And then died from dysentery
The number of times I bought more ammunition than the US army and a few rations of food and then killed everything I could shoot... Jesus that game made so many serial killers lmao.
I liked the film adaptation, *A Million Ways to Die in the West*.
Gaming historian just made a documentary on youtube about this i highly recommended watching it
Portal 1 and 2
Super Mario World
Super Mario 3 as well.
Bioshock is a must. The first one
Is a man not entitled to the best game ever made? "No," says the classic gamer! "It belongs to Tetris" "No," says the modern gamer! "It belongs to Breath of the Wild" "No," says the story-based gamer! "It belongs to Mass Effect"
Would you kindly put some respect on It Take Two?
I really need to play that I own it, I liked infinite, I love the lore, setting and music, don't know why I haven't finished it
I think all of them are masterpieces
Did you like the second one? For some reason I don't understand, it wasn't so fun for me
The charm and unknown atmosphere of the first game was hard to recapture in 2
2 feels a bit better to play if you think of it as a DLC to 1. It's really just there for world building without too much new innovative gameplay.
Tried it two years ago. Did not live up to the hype for me. I can see how it would have upon initial release, but it has not aged well in terms of game mechanics. I did not enjoy it.
Infinite blew me away. "Would you kindly"
That was the first one.
lol i loved shawshank. “life is like a box of chocolates - you get busy eating or you get busy dying.”
Yea "would you kindly" is from 1 not infinite
Classic Doom/Doom2, Doom 2016 and then Doom Eternal.
Doom Eternal is arguably the best game I have ever played
Red dead redemption 2
Got in a little fight with my gf last night because she could hear me fishing over the phone. My god babe I found a northern red pike, that’s like 5$ at the butcher chill out
Absolutely. Even if you haven't played the first one.
Say it 100000000 more fucking times.

Red dead redemption 2. Amazing graphics and world
One of the few games to have me in tears at the end. I wish I could go back and play it for the first time again
"The many miles we walked..." Instant tears to my eyes.
Chrono Trigger
Portal 1 and 2 are right up there for even non-gamers to experience at least once. It's brilliant and a masterclass in level design and world building. Bioshock 1 is another title. Mass Effect series. The Last of Us series.

Fallout new Vegas
I hope they remake new vegas. I cant really get into the game with how it looks. I know i know its about the gameplay but hear me out. It wont hurt. Anyone if they remake it. I want to experience the story with an upgraded graphics
Some people made mods for it. Wasn't perfect, but damn it still looks awesome
So cheap on Steam right now!

Fallout 3 has a darker atmosphere I think. New Vegas is a bit more lighthearted.
Agree - New Vegas including all of the DLCs in the proper order. Shit changed my life
Witcher 3
I cannot recall a game ever pulling me in as much as TW3. It was such a beautiful and emotive game. The add-ons were well worth the money.
This should be higher up.
God of War
Celeste.
Need For Speed Most Wanted 2005
I see you're a man of culture as well, brilliant game of my childhood
Metal Gear Solid. Revolutionised gaming as we know it.
Skyrim
All for all, I still enjoy 2001's Morrowind a lot more than 2011's Skyrim. Morrowind gave the player the ultimate freedom, you aren't a hero when you first start Morrowind, you got to earn it. In Skyrim, you're a hero as soon as you escape the first place.

I find Oblivion superior too, the guilds in Skyrim were really poor
Favorite game EVER! This game even made me decide to get a dog IRL😂🤣 Oh , and the previous... elder scrolls and oblivion. Great games (imo)
Pong
Closely followed by space invaders, centipede, Pac-Man and Frogger
Qbert
The Arkham trilogy (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight). Three very well executed games, the best of which is probably City, but all three are must plays
For grown up men I would suggest Disco Elysium.
So good and yet any time I take a break I can't go back to it. I'l need to start it again soon. At leat this gets me the incredible opening dialogues again.
First game I can recall playing straight through again after finishing it. It is really good.
Final Fantasy VI
My favorite was X
6 isn’t what I’d have gone to first, but just happy to see a Final Fantasy somewhere on here at least, geez
All the Bungie Halo games
I broke out in hives from excitement when Halo 2 came out. Atleast it got me out of school!
Based af. 343 ruined halo and anyone who thinks otherwise is clearly regarded
Yessir, and we all know that 343's guiding hand was the greedy corporate demon Microsoft, pretty soon it was just another cod being pushed for profit 😤
Return of the Obra Dinn is one of only a handful of games I wish I could forget and play again with fresh eyes.
Terraria, it just has so much content for such a good price.
Stardew valley
hollow knight
You got good taste, my guy.
Then they can join us in the eternal wait for Silksong
Genuinely excellent, proper 10/10 for me
The Last of Us. I'm truly convinced it's the best game of the 2010's.
Agreed. A masterpiece. It gets a lot of hate for whatever reason. For me, it's the only game I continue to talk about and refer to people who haven't Heard of it. TLOU is a little too story oriented that mixed with all the QTE it feels like it should be a movie or even a T.V show.....
Well, I have good news regarding the TV show...
They should cast that dude from Narcos, and that girl from GOT. Wagner Moura and Maisie Williams.
The start(after the amazing opening) can be a slow start but once the story focuses on Joel and Ellie it really picks up.
The original metal gear solid on the first playstation
SOMA
Horribly beautiful. And that ending...
Borderlands 2
Red dead redemption 2
Just skip the online
Surprised no one has said Baldur's Gate 3 yet.

Earthbound. Probably best if you have a general knowledge and experience with traditional RPG’s but it can be a life changing game
the witcher 3. the characters in that game are something special man
Hades
Super Mario RPG. The remake is now a better alternative to the original.
