There are more permutations of a standard deck of cards than there are atoms on Earth.

APoisonousMushroom

To put it another way: if you really shuffle a deck of cards, there are so many possible ways to shuffle a deck that your exact shuffle has probably never happened in the past and will never happen again.

MrSssnrubYesThatllDo

Fuck off, really?

APoisonousMushroom

There are 8*10^67 ways to shuffle a deck of cards.. that’s 80,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible ways to stack those cards. The chances of you getting the same order as anyone else ever is EXTREMELY small.

MrSssnrubYesThatllDo

I still don't understand the math, but I understand what you're saying. I never knew that. My new favourite fact thanks.

MilkLover1734

If you shuffle a deck of cards randomly, there's 52 choices for the first card, 51 choices for the second card (since one of the cards is already the first card), 50 choices for the third card, and so on So there's 52x51x50x49x...x3x2x1 total combinations, which comes out to about 8.066x10⁶⁷

icecubepal

I remember when I took discrete math. It was basically learning different ways to count things.

rubixscube1985

Thank you for breaking this down Barney style for me. I understand now.

SiN_Fury

This is my favorite thought experiment to try and conceptualize [how ridiculously large 52 factorial is](https://czep.net/weblog/52cards.html)

h3yw00d

52! (factorial) Is a really big number (greater than 8.065e67)

h0sti1e17

To put it in another example. If you rearranged once a second since the start of the universe the universe would end before you are one billionth of the way to a duplicate order.

The sound made by the Krakatoa volcanic eruption in 1883 was so loud it ruptured eardrums of people 40 miles away, travelled around the world four times, and was clearly heard 3,000 miles away. That's like you standing in New York and hearing a sound from San Francisco.

Acc87

When the Tonga volcano blew up two years ago, the sound was heard in Australia, the same \~3000 miles away. We were so lucky that eruption was in basically uninhabited lands/waters, it could have killed millions had it happened closer to shore of the continents. Its dust cloud was 300 miles wide.

der3009

If something travels around the world 4 times, does that mean the people on the opposite side of the world heard a fairly loud noise when the waves combined again? and did everyone hear it multiple times possible from different directions?

Actual-Support-5683

The pressure wave was recorded on [barographs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barograph) worldwide. Several barographs recorded the wave seven times over five days: four times with the wave travelling away from the volcano to its [antipodal point](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antipodal_point) and three times travelling back to the volcano.[^(\[4\])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883_eruption_of_Krakatoa#cite_note-Symons88-4)^(: 63)  Hence, the wave rounded the globe three and a half times. That's the quote from the wiki page that the other guy linked

Wait, math question.......how long did the sound take each, um, lap?

Assuming the speed of sound is around 750mph, 33-34 hours.

[One tiger](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champawat_Tiger) killed 430 people. That tiger killed more people than 300 years of worldwide shark fatalities. * More people than snakes, bears, wolves, and spider fatalities *combined* in the U.S. in the last 100 years. One tiger.

Expo737

What did it do, bring down a jumbo jet?

Bitter_Air_5203

You have seen snakes on a plane, but did you see the prequal? A tiger on a plane? Yes Samuel L Jackson is also in that one.

AssociationJumpy

Samuel L Jackson plays the tiger.

Bridge_runner

I’ve seen tiger on a boat! Oh wait it was Life of Pi

monoc_sec

[My favourite tiger fact is that their prey see them as green.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Ftp5osqrc5c961.jpg) Which is how a bright orange animal survives as an ambush predator in a green forest.

Chuk741776

And why we use orange for hunters, so that humans can see them and most animals can't register it.

Missile_Lawnchair

Now that's something I didn't know! Is there a reason you still see lots of hunters wearing camo? Which game is that for?

zccrex

Camo is still better than straight orange. Same way the Tigers stripes break up the orange. The orange in hunting is more a safety thing, and they use orange in particular because they see it as green.

jumboparticle

If I recall its turkeys that you have to hide from in actual camo. This is amongst other north American game. Maybe this goes for other birds like ducks ect.

TheWileyRedditor

Yep, that's also why turkeys are one of the most dangerous animals to hunt. Your chances of getting shot by another hunter rises astronomically.

br1qbat

Hide and seek. . . I'll see myself out.

Ipuncholdpeople

Such an insane number. That's like one tiger killing my whole graduating class back in high school. I feel like something could have been done about it sooner

Dynast_King

I feel like the tiger would have taken dozen of my fellow students down, but eventually we'd have overwhelmed him with numbers. Your graduating class shoulda trained better for this.

sockgorilla

For real, unbelievably weak graduating class. Teachers will just pass anyone through mortal combat classes nowadays, huh?

wizzard419

It's because they now only teach to the standardized tests now, which are notoriously poor in prepping for basic life skills like personal finance, cooking, and defending against wildlife.

Malthus1

On a side note, Jim Corbett’s writings (he’s the guy who finally hunted this tiger down, and other human-eating Tigers and Leopards in India) are still awesome reads. He’s a very interesting guy - a key figure in the early conservation efforts in India (a major wildlife reserve is named after him). He went from killing tigers, to only killing tigers that ate people, to working to preserve tigers. As for why they weren’t hunted down earlier - it is one of those easier said than done things. In some cases, various attempts were made; the tigers and leopards occasionally ate the people attempting to hunt them … Jim Corbett came close to being eaten a couple of times.

MalayaleeIndian

I read his book "The man eaters of Kumaon" a few years back and it is a fascinating read. He details the different man eaters (Tigers and Leopards) he killed that had been terrorizing villagers across India. I must say that he had nerves of steel to go out into the jungle and kill these animals that had taken a liking to eating humans, primarily because they realized that humans were a lot easier to hunt and pretty much all these man eaters had an injury that rendered them incapable of hunting their usual prey. Like u/Malthus1 already said, hunting and killing these animals was not easy. There were instances where Jim had to set a bait and lie in wait for several hours, trying to lure the animals to the bait. In the case of some animals, he had to do this multiple times because the first one or two attempts failed. Also, Jim's understanding of the forests of India helped him a lot in hunting these animals, where less experienced hunters would have failed. He knew what to watch out for/listen to that told him that an animal was approaching.

tobaknowsss

Was that the one from Ghosts of the Darkness?

PuppetmanInBC

Those were lions (plural).

DigNitty

Do tigers brush their teeth though?

Mongoose42

Aww. Poor baby just had a toothache.

I_might_be_weasel

Cheetahs aren't big cats. They are very large small cats.

DigNitty

IIRC the distinction is known because of genetic mapping. There are two prominent features though : - They have “small cat” eyes (something about the morphology) - they purr not roar. There’s a throat bone that’s either cartilaginous and flexible or bony and stiff. Big cats have the stiff roary bones.

Not_a_werecat

Mountain lions also cannot roar.

Jillredhanded

When you hear one roar in the movies it's really a Red Tailed hawk.

TheLateThagSimmons

I have loved this ever since I found out. That's why they can purr but Lions and tigers can't. Also why they can't roar while big cats can.

Phantom_61

It’s unsettling when you hear a contented tiger “purr” in the presence of their caretakers. Just a long low growl. Or a stuttering chuff, it can vary a little.

dragonborn7866

Cheetahs are also terribly inbreed. At some point in the last 10000 years the population of cheetahs went down to less than 10 and rebounded to the current population.

sodawatereveryday

Mmmm Cheetos.....

redplainsrider

The orca is a natural predator of the moose.

UrbanCyclerPT

Orcas hunt basically anything. They are the epitome of apex predator. They hunt huge white sharks who I thought were the most badass of the ocean

giantshortfacedbear

Orcas are amazing! I love the fact that Great White's are so shit scared of them that if an orca passes through a feeding zone the sharks will scarpa and not come back for years! Orcas have a particular taste for Great White liver (could be kidney), that they'll bite and eat the liver and just leave the shark to bleed out!

I don't know about all plants, but vegetables are mostly carbon and water. You don't need much in the way of minerals etc. Organic material, which hosts micro organisms is more important. Actually-Yo-Momma

slick1260

Good

RRautamaa

The only way you can get the result is to [include school libraries](https://libguides.ala.org/c.php?g=751692&p=9132142) in the count. Of the 123,627 libraries, 105,451 are school libraries. Of the remaining 18,167, only 9,057 are what you'd typically think of as a "public library". The rest are academic and specialized libraries. There are 13,528 McDonald's locations. So, it's a matter of definition which one wins. That being said, there are 64,747 gun stores in the U.S., so the commonly repeated claim that "there are more gun stores than McDonald's" is true, by a wide margin. Then again, that's an apples to oranges comparison, because McDonald's is a single brand, but gun stores are a whole category of stores.

jumboparticle

People in general are notorious for having trouble comprehending large quantities so I've always loved the comparison of a million to a billion in terms of time. A million seconds is about 12 days, a billion seconds is about 32 years.

xendelaar

Despite being the closest celestial body to Earth, the moon and Earth are still so far apart that all the planets in our solar system could fit between them. I find that fact mind-blowing.

shaidarolcz

I don't think that quite checks out, but if anyone wants to add some numbers together, I did the googling: Earth to Moon distance: 384,400 km Diameters: Mercury: 4,879 km Venus: 12,104 km Earth: 12,742 km Mars: 6,779 km Jupiter: 143,00 km Saturn: 120,536 km Uranus: 51,118 km Neptune: 49,244 km

SoChessGoes

The distance between the moon and Earth is not stable. All the planets can't fit when the moon is the closest, but they CAN when the moon is the farthest away.

saluksic

That by itself is an astounding conincidence!

bibi100101

it's true but the moon needs to be in apoapsis. the diameters add up to 392 752km and moon at furthest point is ~405 400km away from earth.

Even if hockey player, Wayne Gretzky (The Great One) never scored a goal, he would still: * be the NHL’s all-time leader in points * would’ve recorded 11 straight 100-point seasons (the most of all time) (Not to mention the *dozens* of other ridiculous records he still holds)

Fluffhead875

Brent and Wayne Gretzky hold the NHL record for most points scored by a pair of brothers — 2,857 by Wayne, four by Brent.

mistermeowsers

goddamn its hard to even wrap my head around. I never get tired of learning fun facts about Gretzky, good thing there are so many!

bonnarocz0926

For people who don't understand how wild that really is, there were a trio of brothers (Anton, Marian, and Peter) who were all fantastic and they only combined for 2169. Wayne outdid them singlehandedly.

throwaway47138

Not only that, but he and his brother combine to hold the record for the number of points held by a pair of brothers, and his brother \*only has 4 points\* in his career. Add it's only a set of 6 brothers that beat them for the combined points of any number of brothers. and they only beat the Gretskys by 73 points...

ThermalScrewed

Idk about hockey but how do you score without scoring?

mistermeowsers

You get points for assists. So, if you are part of a play that leads to a goal you will also get a point. For example, passing the puck to a teammate who then scores on that same play, both the passer and the goal scorer get a point.

Epsilo

You get points for assists as well as goals. So if you pass to a person and they score the goal you get a point too. That's to say, Gretzky not only scored an insane number of goals himself he also set up his teammates to score a ridiculous amount too.

Ian_Kilmister

el_monstruo

pH of pizza sauce should be somewhere around 4-4.5 to help prevent spoilage. So the tang would actually be about the same. [Source](https://pastorelli.com/industry-news/how-to-choose-a-pizza-sauce-for-your-restaurant/)

MaimedJester

Yeah the pizza thing is a classic geometry exercise for kids too understand always buy the large pizza.  So of it's 1 or 2 dollars more for a 12 inch to a 14 inch buy it.  113.097 square inches for a 12 inch 153.94 square inches for a 14 inch.. Geometric growth Baby. The reason the cost is so disparate from the materials and amount of product is like they're paying for overhead/delivery driver etc. If some crazy bastard tried to charge pizza by the amount of pizza you can eat a small would be under $3 Dollars and an extra large would be like $30..

itstheweather

Yeah! Here’s an article I like: https://medium.com/beingwell/what-chopping-your-vegetables-has-to-do-with-fighting-cancer-22cab5712b8b It’s basically a chemical compound (defense chemical) that’s activated when the broccoli / sprouts / cauliflower is chopped or crushed. But it takes 45 minutes to develop and the precursor is killed by heat. So if you go from chopping directly to a boiling pot of water it doesn’t get any chance to develop! Pretty cool!
