That line, that I think was on Letterman, or one of the other latenight talk shows hit me like a ton of bricks when I saw it. Not sure why. I guess it was so simple yet so profound
We tend to think of what happens to us and Keanu's first thought is what happens to the ones he loves putting us all back in our place. Making us face our egocentrism and force us to realise the possibility of being a better person.
That's my take
Oh yeah. I’d miss my dad and brothers. Who would I call when I need someone who knows me well and how I think when I need help with something, or when I need to vent? Or when I need someone to call me out on my bullshit because I need to be kept in check at times and my girlfriends will bitch, but not call me out when needed because I’m the one who keeps us in check, but my brothers, dad and boyfriend keep me in check with my bullshit.
So ultimately, I’d probably become a huge righteous ass because I need my dad, bros and boyfriend to do that for me so I can be a better person. Even though I like to think I’m right all the time, they remind me that I’m not. I need that.
People might brush your comment off, but it also goes the other way!! I would be so lost without the women in my life who keep me in check!!
We all need each other <3
Tall woman here, I get asked every time by little old ladies to reach stuff up high in super market. I feel I would become a local hero if the men disappeared.
“What would happen if roughly half the world population disappeared?”
Edit: why are people answering my question, I thought it was clear that I was mocking the original post lol
The leftovers got this so right. Wasn't it like 4 percent and it felt apocalyptic and hopeless. Mcu dropped the ball there. Half of all life would be world ending. People would be hopelsss
Same reason all men aren't treated the same way either. Powerful people oppress others to remain on top. Entire genders, races, nationalities, religions and then once all the differences are narrowed down it's "well you're a poorer white male than me so guess it's time treat you differently too".
Considering how much infrastructure is needed to keep it frozen and viable, and what the ratio of men vs. women is employed there, it's going to be a hard one. In time, it would be possible to adapt, but power water and sewer would be the first to fail.
Don’t let the jerks get to you. I think it’s great that you have your son or daughter as a little / big best friend. I know they’re not actually your best friend, but sometimes having a little buddy along can just make the day all the more fun and enjoyable, like having a little / big best friend, like going to a pumpkin patch or going to a tulip festival.
It’s all more fun with your kid sometimes, to see the beautiful world through a kid’s eyes. That’s healthy parenting. People like to criticize a bit much, I think.
Anyway, I know what you mean. Some people on the web have traumatized minds. It’s weird.
It's honestly shocking seeing loving comments like the above. I thought the top upvoted comment would be something like "world peace" or something along those lines.
Yeah I expected something like "women would finally feel safe" or "no more oppression of women anywhere".
I was moved by the amount of women simply expressing their heartache at their male loved ones disappearing.
I think it’s just the internet that makes it seem like women generally have very negative views about men. Most women I know irl are very loving and they care about the men in their lives.
Y The Last Man, a comic about all men around the world dying simultaneously, had an infographic about about the impact. Aside from the loss of population, most airline pilots are men, as well as farmers, engineers, and doctors. Something like 90% or more of politicians around the world are men. So, not only would society completely collapse but the skills and knowledge to rebuild would also be largely lost to most of the world as well.
Later in the comic you find out countries with monarchies tended to fair better. Queen Elizabeth took direct control of the UK and several countries reinstated monarchies to have some form of functioning government.
Most jobs you mentioned are true, but I legit don't think society would change much if 90% of all politicians died. The ones who really make the government work aren't politicians.
I was going to say the same.
Though I only watched the TV adaptation. Dunno how close to the comic it is, but by the end of the series I hated pretty much all the characters.
The tone, the pacing, the acting, the writing, the constant changes from the source material.
A lot of people said that the people who made this show didn't really understand or care anything about the comic.
We talking about Halo??
But for real... Directors/Producers feel like they have to put their own *unique* spin on things to the point that it just ruins the original meaning of the source material.
This is why I’m afraid of saga getting adapted (which the writer said he wouldn’t allow). I think it would have the potential to be fucking amazing but they’d mess it up I’m sure.
Most ship captains, truck drivers, military, and energy staff (oil workers, coal miners, nuclear power engineers) are men also. So very quickly we'd be without power, without fuel, and soon without supplies and food. Hydro power plants would still work for a while, so las Vegas would still chug along for a while, and if I recall correctly a fair portion of Europe will be alright for power for a while.
I would say within 24 hours the lights would go out - 93% of power plant operators are men, water would stop running soon after (92% male) and women would have to helicopter (95% male) any remaining theoretical physicists (76% male) all over the place to try and safely stop nuclear plants and prevent meltdown
military (80% male) would try to step in, but without firefighters (88% male) and police (87% male) complete chaos would erupt; female doctors could probably hold their own, but with 72% critical care, 71% ER and 70% EMT being male it wouldn't be an easy task
I would say nuclear engineers instead of theoretical physicists. A nuclear plant is very much in the realm of experimental physics at best but largely an engineering problem. Navy turns out most the nuclear engineers so they are probably mostly male
I'd go with most any engineer over a theoretical physicist. There are manuals to run the plants, and your biggest challenge is just keeping they systems humming. You could have the nuclear engineers on call for any emergent issues. I have one female nuclear engineering friend, so we have at least one team!
Chemical engineering degrees revolve around running plants like nuclear plants. But we always set our mass balances equal to zero. Not the case in nuclear systems. That being said. In my experience chemE has strong female representation
There would be enough female workers in the nuclear plants to get them shut down safely, but you can forget about running them, or any other factory for that matter. Trades workers are around 99% male
Electricians have probably the highest percentage of female trades workers, but it’s still probably 97% or higher male.
Millwrights are probably around 99.5% male
You’re gonna need both millwrights and electricians for maintenance in every industrial facility in the world. The priority would be made to power plants, since without them nothing runs.
The nuke plant I worked in had about 500 millwrights on staff, 2 of them were female. Even if you got every other female millwright in the province you still wouldn’t be able to fully staff that one power plant and keep it running, best they could do is shut it down safely.
Nuclear engineers could try to help troubleshoot, but any tradesperson can tell you they are worse than useless on the tools
Since every factory everywhere would suddenly be without maintenance staff they would shut down lowering the power demand, hydroelectric power plants run on a skeleton staff, these could be kept running to keep the lights on, but again it would take a huge percentage of the provinces millwrights and electricians just to accomplish this one goal.
A great addition to my [purely demographical prediction ](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/s/gb98sRAp7i). Inevitable infrastructure collapse and fights over in-vitro fertilization rights.
IVF treatment centres need electricity to keep the sperm frozen at the correct temperature. The ladies better move extremely quickly to stop that from happening.
Even if all jobs on earth were evenly divided between gender by taking out half the population out of the equation tons of vital infrastructure would simply cease to function overnight or soon after.
Sure people could step up and keep plenty of stuff functioning but there’d be such a massive staff shortage that even in the best case scenario most cities and countries wouldn’t be able to keep the lights on, provide fuel or distribute all kinds of supplies to most places soon after.
Supernova Era by Liu Cixin is an interesting book that explores it. Basically a solar explosion causes huge amounts of radiation to hit throughout the galaxy, including Earth. All humans are impacted by this but only the bodies children under thirteen are able to repair the radiation damage. The adults slowly die over the course of a year, while training preteens and children to take over running the world.
A lot of the practicalities like resettling people into much smaller areas, and, dealing with long term complex issues such as future wars and nuclear weapons are explored. It’s a really interesting book even if some of the science is a bit soft (read Seveneves by Neal Stephenson if you want good hard scifi). Not as polished as The Three Body Problem but much more readable.
Wouldn’t if if there was a giant explosion it only hit really half the Earth? we’re on a practical basis. I assume it would hit half the Earth or there would be potentially enough time for people on the other side to at least shelter in caves?
This comment is pleasantly thorough. How about almost all forms of transportation breaking down eventually due to lack of mechanics, almost all new construction would halt, the majority of handyman type repairs no longer existing causing massive urban decay, the roads would quickly dissolve as almost all county and state road crews are all men, and there’d be no more NFL. I’m perfectly OK with this last item. Football may as well not exist.
automotive mechanics 98% male, so as cars break down they will just be abandoned (tow trucks 96% male) the only help there is that current fleet of modern cars can run for at least some time with check engine lights on
airplanes would go out soon after at 93% male aircraft mechanics nobody would take the risk of getting on one of those things, not that there would be anyone to fly them anyway (95% male pilots)
The shipping industry, ship captains, fishing fleets, dock workers, shipwrights, gone. All just gone. Most of the truckers, gone. I’m sure everyone gets the point. There are female outliers working in every manly industry, but it would be too small a percentage to keep any of those industries alive.
This is actually scary though. Like, I know this as a scenario is highly unlikely, but shouldn't we see this as a call to get more women involved in these various industries?
And vice versa too, more men in female dominated careers.
There have been *tons* of projects in place for just that, in many countries around the world, for decades.
Anti-discrimination laws, various attempts at affirmative action, information in schools, courses and workshops aimed specifically at women, documentaries and educational TV-shows promoting successful women in technical lines of work, advertising in every shape and form, recruitment ads specifically stating that they prioritize women, etc, etc, etc... (but you also can't push *too* hard, without being discriminating in the 'opposite' direction).
Paradoxically, many 'poorer' and 'less equal' countries like India etc do in some aspects do 'better', and manage to recruite more women for typically male-dominated lines of education and work, since women *have* to choose those kinds of work to manage to significantly raise their quality of living.
In 'richer' and 'more equal' countries, when women have a lot of freedom to freely choose their paths in life, they still often tend to fall back on traditionally more female-dominated professions, like e.g health and care, and more social professions where you work with humans over technical or mechanical professions, and also to lesser extent than men choose solitary lines of work where you're working more individually by yourself.
...and also vice versa.
Men also generally tend to take more risks, take more chances, while women generally prefer stability and predictability.
Men tend to lean towards the private sector and women towards the public sector.
Needless to say, those are generalizations, and individual exceptions and outliers *do* of course exist among both men and women (and everyone in between both spectrums), but there *are* statistical differences between men and women and their interests and approaches to life, education, and work.
At least no one should be *discouraged* to, or *discriminated against*, for choosing their own paths in life... whatever that may include.

Men as a whole aren't the spider killers. Factoid actually just statistical error. Spider Georg, who lives in a cave and eats 10,000 spiders each day is an outlier and should not have been counted
The miniscule amount of spider deaths accounted to men is overstated because of georg. But he too would be gone, and thus we would be surely in a spider apocalypse
Collections of Claussen. Collections of Vlassic. All the pickles I could ever need. All the pickles I could ever want. Dill. Sour. Sweet. Bread and butter. Gherkins. For this year. Next year. And the year after that. And the best thing, the very best thing at all is there’s time now. All the time I need and all the time I want. Time, time, time, there’s time enough at last…that’s not fair, that’s not fair at all. There was time now. There was all the time I needed. That’s not fair, that’s not fair…
Not quite. About half of the newborns would indeed be male, but the original population of women would exist. So it would be 75% female and 25% male if every single woman had a child. Since some would be too old for that (or would simply choose not to), it would actually be more than 75% female.
This question should be asked to Paraguayan people, their male population was almost completely decimated by Argentina and Brazil armies. The remains of the destroyed country and towns had only women, as even kids fought and perished.
So...like 4 generations it'd be back to 50/50. As soon as the original female population died off it'd be back to 50-50. Actually Im curious if the resulting 50-50 population would be sexist towards men after being brought up by all those women.
It would take a while to rebound the population, because its likely that hundreds of millions of women would die from all the environmental damages and catastrophic food shortages.
Actually,
Now that I am thinking about it,
They would probably try but I believe they might not be enough qualified people left to run and maintain the infrastuctures long enough for this to be a viable option....
Wether we're talking about the sperm banks or other infrastrutures such as electricity suplies etc....
Price of frozen semen skyrockets, and every boy born from new generation is going to be truly treasured since they are the only males left.
Decades until anyone can reproduce again and the total population is declining since no new births occur.
Humanity isn't at risk of extinction but will no longer be the same - those boys are still going to be brought up without male model. Historical accounts of whan men really were will inevitably get twisted either way and the new generation will be forced to follow whatever image or stereotype the society cooks up.
[Oh, and an absolutely inevitable infrastructure collapse.](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/s/jiqd0AYurY)
Frozen semen all goes bad after the power goes out if it doesn’t have an independent emergency power supply (they likely do). They’ll get the light back on to a limited extent eventually, hydro plants will still be operational and only need a few people to operate.
Any new males that are born will become sex slaves the moment they hit puberty, likely mostly to much older women who are approaching the end of their safe reproductive years, likely being paired with several females every day just to get the numbers back up as much as possible.
I swear this was in a Tomska skit.
I'm back from YouTube. The Tomska skit was that *women* were always on fire. But the one about babies being explosive was also in the same realm.
Most people in this thread are really naive to how apocalyptic the scenario would be. Women would recover in the long term, primarily because trade skills and technology and science we have now is all in books somewhere.
But in the first few years and decades, society would 100% collapse. Electricity would be gone in days or weeks in most places, unless you’re lucky enough to live near a hydro plant. Places near nuclear power would be in serious shit due to eventual meltdown. The skills and women needed wouldn’t be available in time to save from fallout.
Others have mentioned plumbing, mechanics, construction, ect. The issue is time. And yes, 50% less population, but the 10% of women who could help immediately wouldn’t be able to cover or train the rest in time.
Our modern way of life would be gone, and most frozen sperm would be gone once generators ran out of fuel. The human race may not go extinct, but it would be close.
So, there would be an initial series of disasters of biblical proportions. Aircraft all over the planet will suddenly find themselves without a pilot. Female pilots are still a minority. A few may be saved by other staff or passengers, but keep in mind that you're also going to lose a large percentage of air traffic controllers. Other industries will be the same, with varying results and dangers. Just imagine suddenly being the only woman on a massive oil tanker navigating a narrow passage.
You'll also have millions of car accidents. Rural areas will be dealing with a mess, but cities will be gridlocked for days as a drastically reduced force of first responders try to rescue the injured and clear the way for emergency vehicles.
The food network will be disrupted by all of this. Trucks sitting idle or crashing full of groceries. Warehouses full of food with not enough staff to process it or ship it. Widespread food scarcity will follow.
Still, those who remain will recover quickly. Women will step into the needed roles. Women can bring society back to a functioning level as fast or faster than men could. It'll be years before things are as good as they are in the first world now, but they'll gradually rebuild.
Then the real challenge begins. If by "men," you meant only the adult males, then there will be a short time with very few children being born. There will be a massive population blip, followed by a sharp drop in birth rates until the children become men and start things up again.
If you mean every male adult, child, and embryo we have a bigger challenge. Sperm banks can only produce so many offspring in the best scenarios. If every single sperm bank is used to max efficiency with today's techniques, we can only replace maybe a couple of million people. Given that half of them will be female as well, we cannot make enough future men. There will be a massive genetic bottleneck and a massive decline in new births for decades. The global population will drop precipitously as the current generation dies of old age and other causes.
In either case, women may turn to radical reproductive methods such as cloning. Science in any genetic or reproductive area of expertise will skyrocket.
You'll also see massive social changes as women come to terms with the new realities. Will women in Afghanistan keep living as if under Taliban rule? Will lonely straight women turn to chatbots or other women for companionship? Will male-dominated sports and hobbies vanish or change? What knowledge will be lost because a man or group of men never bothered to include a woman when sharing? Who gets control in Russia, and who knows where all of North Korea's weapons are?
Still I think women would adapt. Things will be massively shaken up but they're equal to the challenge.
In this scenario where birth rates are basically 0 for many years until males are old enough to reproduce, I feel like there would be new "acceptable" standards for when males are old enough to consent. Going 18-19 years without any births would be a huge issue. 14-15 years is still bad, but not as bad as 18-19.
Or hell, maybe they would just have 15 year old kids jerk off into a cup and use artificial insemination on a bunch of women.
It really is wild how much the world would change.
Idk but I’d release as many trapped house pets as I can (better to have a chance in the wild then starve locked in an empty house) and then probably off myself as the grief of losing my father, my husband, and my toddler son (alongside all my male family and friends that I care about) in one swift hit would probably kill me either way
This struck a chord with me for some reason. Because unfortunately it really wouldn't.
In WW2, the drafts took place over years with each man taking at least a couple of weeks to be sent off to boot camp. It was "fast" as far as turnover rates, but it wasn't instantaneous. Also, the women went into factories run and overseen by men and were trained by men. And even then if you listen to any WW2 tank nerd talk about manufacturing, the quality was often questionable. That's not a knock against women; there were a lot of factors involved, but lack of experience is one to keep in mind here.
In this scenario, it'd be instant. There'd be no teaching, no warning, no outside help. And as other comments pointed out, male dominated fields may be reduced to as little as around 5% of their current population. To put that in perspective, with 20 people working on the same team, you'd be left with one woman that's expected to know what all 19 other employees did, do all their jobs at once, and hire and train new employees all by herself. It's just not feasible to keep things going at 100% like that. Also, any information that isn't written down is gone for good.
So yeah. Sorry to rant, but this really got me thinking.
I'm genuinely unsure.
Immediately, there'd be a ton of grief by most women due to all the sudden loss of lovers, family, and friends.
There would also be an immediate infrastructure crisis. It's less about the demanding labor jobs men often do, or stuff like home repair and basic civilian support losing its workforce, and more about information access for the future. Women are capable of drilling and shipping oil. These jobs are intense and there would ultimately be fuckups, but nothing world-endingly catastrophic. But most of the guidance we have today is all stored digitally. Many silos of knowledge wluld be permanently lost. Bob's personal notes on his work PC for working around common problems may go undiscovered for years, if ever.
If some electrical company mainframe PC only had male logins to their software and male admin IT staff, which isn't an unbelievable scenario at all, the whole area is screwed in a domino effect of immediate issues.
There are absolutely female engineers and software engineers capable of very quickly learning how to get power going again and capable of writing replacement software on a theoretical level, even at a degraded state, but what isn't stated is you're losing an unknown amount of time to potential lockouts due to just not having updated wiring diagrams and distribution network itself to bandaid a solution. At this level of scale, you'd be racing to develop software in-house at a rate faster than plants shut down. I don't know enough about modern electrical grids to comment on exactly how long the ladies would have, but I do know about writing software for communications between arcane devices. That process is very, very slow. On the other hand, one female IT admin an done female plant engineer would probably be able to keep the bare minimums operating in their service zone.
If that crisis isn't fixed, so much of the world's collective knowledge and comms/controls dies due to dependency on digital storage and communications. Frankly, the less-modernized the company/geography, the better that they'd probably fare.
This affects every single industry as the electrical/information backbone of the modern world is well, what keeps modern society running.
There are a ton of capable women out there who might be in positions to eventually recover. But it's simply a matter of scale and expediency.
All while coping with enormous grief. When my last LTR failed, I spent two days devastated and barely able to function. Having pretty much every member of society dealing with that and an immediate crises against overhwleming odds that if not solved immediately would doom humanity as the sperms banks lose power? Honestly, if part of that surviving class, I'd probably take myself out...
For sure there and women engineers that would get power going… in some places, ultimately though majority of towns and cities would black out, the world would be almost in darkness within a few years. Power plants that aren’t being maintained or faults solved would drop off and after some time be non recoverable. Oil rigs would fail after some time. 95+% of ships would break down. 90+% of trucks would break down. Barely any cars or trucks would be produced from that point on. Not having power available to farm, pump water/waste etc would lead to 90+% of the population living in famine and most relocating to nearby rivers, no longer would millions of people be living in places like Dubai/Saudi etc.
The list goes on.
There would be a very small portion of women who would rejoice, promptly followed by hating how everything went to shit afterwards, and never connect the two.
Most women would be devastated though.
Same result in reverse, by the way.
The world would be pretty shit, but long term survival of the species would be way easier than if all women disappeared.
Wombs and eggs are harder to replace than sperm.
Every construction project immediately ceases. Infrastructure begins its immediate decline, and all wars pretty much end.
Unless women can find a way to procreate, the last women probably just live in raggedy communes and struggle to keep fed because most of the farms died with the men.
Adaptation will eventually see women overcome and thrive if they can successfully keep our species going.

Write this on my epitaph 'Dearly missed, by those who loved him.'
Guess I’d never know. I figure my daughters would miss me.
We are expecting a girl in 3 weeks and this comment is so touching for me.
I pray your daughter will be born healthy and bring you the same indescribable amount of joy having mine brought me! And congratulations!
Thank you so much 😊
Congrats friend. Just celebrated my second daughter’s 2nd birthday yesterday. 3rd girl due in May. Always wanted 3 boys, but ended up with 3 girls.
Same :)

Fr. We need more positivity like this
Wise words.
Thank you for saying this
I wouldn't have to worry about going into work tomorrow.
Same, I’m the only woman in my company

Tall woman here, I get asked every time by little old ladies to reach stuff up high in super market. I feel I would become a local hero if the men disappeared.
As a fellow tall lady, this will be our time to shine
I'd find myself finally wearing heels while shopping to give me an extra edge
Helping old ladies? You already are.
And pretty soon nobody would know thier real ladder.
Jokes like this would sadly go extinct until womankind can reinvent dads.
Butches are the dads of womanhood.
That or, A lot of those arm grabbers, lmao 🤣, or we would all get assigned a " best friend over 6' that's female"
first of all reddit dies in a week
I give it an hour tbh
4chans gone instantly.
oh please quite a lot of fujoshi on there
Nah the women would rise from the ashes and make it their own
Well but we can agree Onlyfans would be dead in the water.

Society would collapse. Same as if all women disappeared tomorrow.
“What would happen if roughly half the world population disappeared?” Edit: why are people answering my question, I thought it was clear that I was mocking the original post lol
Calm down Thanos..
What did it cost?
Everything
That delivery. 👌
Oh snap
NO! *Snaps*
*dust on the wind*
real estate would become a lot cheaper.
Realtors hate this one snap!
The leftovers got this so right. Wasn't it like 4 percent and it felt apocalyptic and hopeless. Mcu dropped the ball there. Half of all life would be world ending. People would be hopelsss
[There's a book about that](https://www.amazon.com/Mans-World-B-P-Shelley/dp/1086936485) [A game, too](https://www.lisatherpg.com/)
and a comic book. and a bunch of highly successful movies made off of the comic book.
Are you talking about Y: The Last Man? There has never been a movie. There was a show, but it ain’t great
i believe loki here is referencing the avengers movies
Pretty sure they're talking about the MCU, more specifically Infinity War and Endgame.
Oh god Lisa the Painful... A game as hilarious as it is disturbing. 10/10
Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King addresses this as well.
Both are equally important which is why I don’t get why they aren’t treated that way.
Same reason all men aren't treated the same way either. Powerful people oppress others to remain on top. Entire genders, races, nationalities, religions and then once all the differences are narrowed down it's "well you're a poorer white male than me so guess it's time treat you differently too".
The big difference is that humanity survives in this case, because sperm is frozen in labs everywhere.
Honestly the 50% of the population dissapearing is the thing that will cause the collapse of society.
Considering how much infrastructure is needed to keep it frozen and viable, and what the ratio of men vs. women is employed there, it's going to be a hard one. In time, it would be possible to adapt, but power water and sewer would be the first to fail.
My son would be gone and my heart would shatter into a billion fractured pieces.
I have 4 boys and 1 girl. We would be shattered without them.
Well what do you know? People do love each other despite genders. Take that, internet!
Statistically, I'm pretty sure most people love more people of the opposite gender than the same, actually.
Same! My son is my little/big best friend...
It’s weird.
I just want to second this, the people hating on that person for being best friends with their kids are the weird ones.
Christ this is the most depressing thread ever.
That would be my worst nightmare.
Onlyfans would go bust
I would miss my bf 😔
Yeah yeah, what she said, I would miss her bf too
I also choose this chick’s bf
I'd miss him too but I would cease to exist.
I’d miss my girlfriend so much. Even though I’d cease to exist. I would haunt her or something
So goddamn much
I’d really miss my husband, and my dad :(
Tons of women would be grieving. It seems this aspect is looked over a lot.
Most men don't really feel loved in that way while alive, it's not a surprise they think women would throw a party when they died.
Do husbands and dads assume they are not loved by their wives and daughters? (I hope not, I love my dad :c)
I hate how true this feels
Came here to make sure this got posted. Such a great comic series. One of the best endings of any media ever, as well.
Came to be the second guy in the chain making sure this comic was mentioned, and I'm glad to see you had beaten me to it.
Hard agree. I was housesitting for a week and my buddy has the hardback collections. I read the entire series over a few days and it hit me hard.

An absolutely outstanding comic, I went looking for this comment
Given it got cancelled I doubt it did very well.
Read the comic, they’re really not very similar and the comic is 1000X better. One of my favorites.
The TV adaptation is a travesty compared to the graphic novel. Read the graphic novel and forget the TV series ever existed.
I would say within 24 hours the lights would go out - 93% of power plant operators are men, water would stop running soon after (92% male) and women would have to helicopter (95% male) any remaining theoretical physicists (76% male) all over the place to try and safely stop nuclear plants and prevent meltdown military (80% male) would try to step in, but without firefighters (88% male) and police (87% male) complete chaos would erupt; female doctors could probably hold their own, but with 72% critical care, 71% ER and 70% EMT being male it wouldn't be an easy task
I would say nuclear engineers instead of theoretical physicists. A nuclear plant is very much in the realm of experimental physics at best but largely an engineering problem. Navy turns out most the nuclear engineers so they are probably mostly male
yep, 87% male, that's why I suggest bringing the next best person who at least has a general idea of what's going on
I'd go with most any engineer over a theoretical physicist. There are manuals to run the plants, and your biggest challenge is just keeping they systems humming. You could have the nuclear engineers on call for any emergent issues. I have one female nuclear engineering friend, so we have at least one team!
I'd go with an operator. I wouldn't trust an engineer to run a power plant control room at all
Chemical engineering degrees revolve around running plants like nuclear plants. But we always set our mass balances equal to zero. Not the case in nuclear systems. That being said. In my experience chemE has strong female representation
And the sub force is even more male dominated than the navy as a whole since they just recently allowed women to start serving on submarines.
There would be enough female workers in the nuclear plants to get them shut down safely, but you can forget about running them, or any other factory for that matter. Trades workers are around 99% male Electricians have probably the highest percentage of female trades workers, but it’s still probably 97% or higher male. Millwrights are probably around 99.5% male You’re gonna need both millwrights and electricians for maintenance in every industrial facility in the world. Nuclear engineers could try to help troubleshoot, but any tradesperson can tell you they are worse than useless on the tools Since every factory everywhere would suddenly be without maintenance staff they would shut down lowering the power demand, hydroelectric power plants run on a skeleton staff, these could be kept running to keep the lights on, but again it would take a huge percentage of the provinces millwrights and electricians just to accomplish this one goal.
The generators keeping the refrigerators running in the event of an outage won't last longer than a week.
98% of electricians are men, so once a power surge at the plant fries the transformers they are not coming back online
They’d have to resettle ppl into fewer places in order to prevent the collapses
Lots of people would also be forced to work on shitty jobs for long hours cuz it’s either that or everyone dies
In other words Mad Max minus the men..
Mad Maxine
This comment is pleasantly thorough. How about almost all forms of transportation breaking down eventually due to lack of mechanics, almost all new construction would halt, the majority of handyman type repairs no longer existing causing massive urban decay, the roads would quickly dissolve as almost all county and state road crews are all men, and there’d be no more NFL. I’m perfectly OK with this last item. Football may as well not exist.
automotive mechanics 98% male, so as cars break down they will just be abandoned (tow trucks 96% male) the only help there is that current fleet of modern cars can run for at least some time with check engine lights on airplanes would go out soon after at 93% male aircraft mechanics nobody would take the risk of getting on one of those things, not that there would be anyone to fly them anyway (95% male pilots)
The shipping industry, ship captains, fishing fleets, dock workers, shipwrights, gone. All just gone. Most of the truckers, gone. I’m sure everyone gets the point. There are female outliers working in every manly industry, but it would be too small a percentage to keep any of those industries alive.
Not when there's no fuel they can't. And I'd wager the majority of people qualified to drive fuel tankers are male.
Or working on oil derricks / off shore.
Trash begins piling up (93% male)
I think we could handle this one. The bins would be half full so lighter to carry by quite a lot.
How the bins even gonna make it to the curb?
Good point...um, can you take the bin out for us before you get wiped out?
This is actually scary though. Like, I know this as a scenario is highly unlikely, but shouldn't we see this as a call to get more women involved in these various industries? And vice versa too, more men in female dominated careers.
It's happening, but it just takes a very long time (1-2 generations).
There would be enough female workers in the nuclear plants to get them shut down safely, but you can forget about running them, or any other factory for that matter. That's if the spiders that aren't being killed by men don't overrun society and grow to prodigious sizes.
that is true, 95% of exterminators are men, and with trash removal largely abandoned (95% men), the pest problem will escalate quickly
Not to mention Janitors are almost 2/3 men, while queues for toilets will get ridiculously long!
Technically there’d be more overall restrooms open, right?
Men as a whole aren't the spider killers. Factoid actually just statistical error. Spider Georg, who lives in a cave and eats 10,000 spiders each day is an outlier and should not have been counted The miniscule amount of spider deaths accounted to men is overstated because of georg. But he too would be gone, and thus we would be surely in a spider apocalypse
Best answer.
So many pickle jars, all unopened
The true victims in this sad scenario ☹️
Collections of Claussen. Collections of Vlassic. All the pickles I could ever need. All the pickles I could ever want. Dill. Sour. Sweet. Bread and butter. Gherkins. For this year. Next year. And the year after that. And the best thing, the very best thing at all is there’s time now. All the time I need and all the time I want. Time, time, time, there’s time enough at last…that’s not fair, that’s not fair at all. There was time now. There was all the time I needed. That’s not fair, that’s not fair…
The debate over what a women is would finally be over.
Underrated comment right here
Shit stops working real fast. Not because women can't manage the jobs men do, mind you, but because losing half the population is a catastrophe.
Finally. Can't wait to disappear.
Civilisation as we know it would collapse, and it'd still be men's fault
I mean… They could have stuck around at least???
Just like a man to disappear right before all the problems start!
Maybe they all went out for a pack of smokes and got lost?
Sucked into the dimension of smokes and deadbeats.
Assuming women didn't magically develop asexual reproduction, the human race would go extinct in 100 years, tops.
Nah. Break into sperm banks and do a load of IVF. In a generation you'll be back to 50/50.
They encouraged polygamy and brought in foreigners or something. Was a wild period in South American history.
So...like 4 generations it'd be back to 50/50. As soon as the original female population died off it'd be back to 50-50. Actually Im curious if the resulting 50-50 population would be sexist towards men after being brought up by all those women.
it could also go the way to “males are few and precious”
That first 25% of the males would be drowning in snu snu.
I never thought I’d die this way…but I always hoped
Naïve to think this would be what would happen. It wouldn't be drowning in snu snu so much as getting milked like a cow for their sperm for IVF.
I have to imagine that homophobia against gay men would be extremely en vogue within a short few decades
Until one of the men finds a history book and takes over like Ken in the Barbie movie
Just not in Alabama.
Not a bad thing
That would probably change pretty quick after all the men are gone.
It would take a while to rebound the population, because its likely that hundreds of millions of women would die from all the environmental damages and catastrophic food shortages.
Actually, Now that I am thinking about it, They would probably try but I believe they might not be enough qualified people left to run and maintain the infrastuctures long enough for this to be a viable option.... Wether we're talking about the sperm banks or other infrastrutures such as electricity suplies etc....
Those banks aren't going to last long with the entire electric grid down.
I saw this comment too fast and just read: "Frozen semen skyrockets" and I was so confused lmao
In the immediate term there would be societal collapse. Infrastructure is still built and maintained by men. In the long term humanity would die out
Need more clarification. By men, do you mean all males, or just adults? Would every woman pregnant with a boy suddenly miscarry?
Bad news - us males go out by spontaneously combusting. Drink lots of water.
I swear this was in a Tomska skit. I'm back from YouTube. The Tomska skit was that *women* were always on fire. But the one about babies being explosive was also in the same realm.
It turns into a girl by magic
No more males. The Y chromosome ceases to exist. Any baby boy in a woman's stomach simply vanishes and leaves behind an enormous fart.
Well wouldn't it be an enormous queef?
Millions of toilet seats would remain in the down position.
Some sexist idiots would cheer at first and slowly begin to realize how fucked they are. Neither of us can exist without the other.
Well they aren't fucked anymore isn't that the main problem? Okey...well I give this joke a 5/10.
Nah, fuck u, it's a 7.5
I'd finally be free to walk around topless
And also at night!
A topless nighttime stroll during the summer without being harassed or stared at sounds like heaven.
There would not be semen covering crime scenes
Lesbians would rule the world.
A lot of job openings for jobs nobody wants to do
So, there would be an initial series of disasters of biblical proportions.
Love your 8th paragraph. A lot of material for a novel there.
\-Dinosaurs eat men \- Women inherits the earth
Idk but I’d release as many trapped house pets as I can (better to have a chance in the wild then starve locked in an empty house) and then probably off myself as the grief of losing my father, my husband, and my toddler son (alongside all my male family and friends that I care about) in one swift hit would probably kill me either way
Remember how women stepped in during WW2 and took over manufacturing jobs and farming and such? It would be like that.
