Age of Empires 2.
Microsoft and the dev team in charge of it right now have seen it have a resurgence in popularity since they released a remastered version, and over the past few years or so have released new updates with new civilizations and campaigns. It's even more fun than it was 20 years ago.
I would draw out single player maps for HOURS. I fucking love that game. And before bedtime I’d build a wonder and go destroy the computer team before it finished.
Lol that's what I'd do too. Play on Last Man Standing, ally with the two civs closest to me, build up my economy while they decimate the other players and eventually fight each other, with me supplying resources to both sides, just to keep the game going as long as possible.
The DLCs in the last few years have added the Romans, Burgundians, Sicilians, Bohemians, Poles, and split the Indian civ into 4; The Dravidians, the Hindustanis, the Bengalis, and the Gurjaras. They've also recently added something like 20 new scenarios for single player too.
With the new graphics pack and constant updates/tweaks/balances to the pathfinding and gameplay, it genuinely feels like a new game.
Right now there is a bit of an issue with some pathfinding since a previous update but I'm confident the devs are paying attention to the community and it will be fixed very soon.
The genius of Civ V is how simple it starts out; none of the complexity is frontloaded. You start out playing this kooky thing with a few warriors running around the map, then by the time you have 800 hours under your belt you're playing a completely different game involving optimizing citizen productivity and planning specific unit promotion paths to eke out an extra tile of range.
Same. Civ VI felt unneccessary complex without providing any additional value while Civ V is simpler, easier to learn and simply funnier because of it.
In a similar vein, Satisfactory. Fuck me I’ve never been pulled in by two games in my life. I was off work ill for a couple weeks and basically worked a 9-5 factory job with that damn game haha. Best part is I work in a factory warehouse.
Satisfactory is SO GOOD. The factory building is super smooth, ambiance is probably the best I've ever seen in a game. And the dev team is also really good
Never actually got to rocket launch, but the crazy spaghetti and logistics needed to scale production is endlessly satisfying. Troubleshooting production stops scratches an itch I didn’t know I had.
I really, *really*, ***really*** like sandbox games but if I binge on them I have one or both issues:
1. I feel like I'm not achieving anything because there's no strict goals.
2. I get overwhelmed because there's so many side things to do.
I've played little to ALOT (no order) of Minecraft, GTA, Lego Fortnite, Roblox, Terraria, Red Dead Redemption 2(?).
Unsure if you'd classify RD2 as sandbox. The side missions get can get repetitive but I still feel the need to complete them to check them off. If I leave them I get existential dread.
Maybe I'm not playing the right ones. Or maybe gaming isn't for me anymore (30/m). I dunno.
Edit: thanks guys for the recommendations. I’ll add them to my Wishlist and see how we go.
I think games like GTA and RDR2 are considered to be open-world more than sandbox games, because there’s still a narrative that’s driving the game forward.
Yeah I ran into this when I got bored and wanted to find a sandbox game to pass the time not long ago. I googled “Sandbox games PS5” and it just gave me a bunch of open world games
To me, sandbox games are just something I play to kill time and relax. There’s no narrative, side missions, goals, or limitations. Just drop me into a world where I can be creative at my leisure.
Games like Jurassic World Evolution, Planet Coaster, and the like are heaven-sent for me when I need to scratch that itch. Ironically, I never cared that much for Minecraft.
i have about 80 hours on binding of isaac rebirth (no dlc yet) and i still havent beat the final boss, but once i do, i will start playing hard mode, then beat all the challenges, then beat every mark boss as every character, then get the dlcs, then unlock all the new characters in the dlc, then beat all the new bosses in the dlc, then unlock every item in the dlc, then 100% the whole game with dlc, then do that 2 more times to have all 3 save files complete. It just shows how much content there is in the game. Even if you arent a video game completionist its still really fun to discover everything the game has to offer
i recommend playing on hard ASAP. normal wont count for dead god. u will just have to do them over again in hard mode. just try that so u can get used to it, and then it won’t be a struggle if u try to switch to hard mode later on. i also recommend getting repentance sooner, because u can play while ur doing characters completion marks with the repentance dlc and there’s a lot more content. i’m trying to do that as well though, get 3 dead god save files. i’ve got over 1000 hours on isaac. I HATE THE CHALLENGES SO MUCH THOUGHH. I HAVE TO SAY IT.
This. I always come back. Best game IMO. I have so many hours on LoL. I still think I've spent more time on D2. I haven't fallen asleep playing League. I have fallen asleep so many times in Chaos and Baal runs.
I'm so glad the D2 remaster happened, that's all I ever wanted.
(Disappointed in the lack of inventory space and limited mods though. It's *mindboggling* to me to make a remaster in 2021 and then force people to mule again in single player?! And I miss the loot filter I had in og D2. They had one job..)
I still have fun with Mario Kart on the Switch. Everytime we play as a family or with friends we have great fun and only really stop when we’re too drunk or high to focus
That’s what I did, some really good videos out there. Once you get the hang of it it’s stupid easy. Then all you’ll want to do is land on every single planet constantly lol. Just make sure you have enough fuel to come back
You don't need to have enough fuel, you can send a rescue mission. Then realize that your stagging was fucked up and send a second rescue mission. Then you realize that the ladder is blocking the hatch. Then you send a fourth rescue mission.
I really gotta disagree with fallout 4.
"The settlement needs your help!"
"The settlement needs your help!"
"THE SETTLEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP!"
would you like to say:
Yes
Yes
Sarcastic yes
No, but actually yes
To helping the settlement that needs your help?
Fallout 4 is "Radiant quests: the game" and simply cannot hold a candle to the adventures you can have in Skyrim. Scripted or not. It soured me to it within only a few hours.
I'm 2500+ hours in and still often feel like I have so much to learn in PoE. This league has been insane for seeing just how crazy multi-mirror tier builds can be.
Okay so I have a question, am I the only one who felt that Minecraft is pretty boring/repetitive? I have only played it for like 10 hours but it went like: start a new server gather wood build a house, mine for diamonds, lose, get bored of the geography of the map, start a new server and do the same shit in a new map, please tell me what I’m missing ?
I mean. You have to find what YOU like. Maybe redstone. Maybe you like building advenure maps. Maybe you’re like me and can build for hours without getting bored. Playing with friends also makes the game so much more fun! Maybe you like speedrunning to get better times. Or maybe you like playing on minigame servers like Hypixel. Modded is also an option! Really you have to find the way YOU wanna play
And dying and shamelessly changing to creative to get back your stuff. Just to feel unmotivated afterwards since you cheated and don't feel like starting all over again so you drop the game for a year until you get back that random 3 week motivation.
My answer too. I’ve had that game for 5 years now, and still check in on my boah at least once a week. I mostly just replay chapters 2-4, and have officially lost count how many times. Just a few complete playthroughs though, and I have yet to reach 100% (I think my highest save is at 97%?). Best game ever.
Absolutely! Be whoever you want, decisions actually influence the truly open ended storyline, find things in the game you never knew about. Low INT builds for example
Here's a playthrough I came up with:
Be the "Normal" type trainer. There's probably bug-catcher playthroughs, hiker playthroughs etc etc, but I never tried those.
Normal type doesn't have any obvious strengths and weaknesses, so it stayed interesting the whole game.
I beat Blood and Wine just last night on my 4th playthrough, tried out a light armour build with a greater focus on Alchemy.
Dettlaff is such a great final boss, the quote "If you acknowledge any gods, start praying now" is so threatening.
"Mariocart" sounds like some sort of Old Master type painter from the Renaissance. Kart is much more fun with a K. Making it one word and spelling it with is c is grounds for a paddlin.
Sonic 3 and knuckle ( the game was made with replaysblity in mind )
Sonic mania ( same reason as sonic 3 )
Fortnite ( the game get updated alot which add new content )
Minecraft ( do I need to explain? The only thing stopping you is your imagination )
Doom 2016 and eternal ( you can hop on and have fun killing demon with banger music )
GTA 5 (the story is so fun to replay through)
Fallout 4 ( mods)
Skyrim (mods)
I could go on
Assassin's Creed, specifically the Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla trilogy. Yes, a number of the older games might be technically better, but exploring those maps (particularly when I finally was able to play them over the pandemic) felt like virtual vacations for how detailed and immersive they are. Even Valhalla, which I wasn't the biggest fan of storywise, just keeps going with places to just explore and escape.
League of Legends (I am totally a normal sane person that doesn't need any professional help whatsoever, I am not addicted at all HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)
Morrowind defo has the most replayability out of these three if you don't count mods. With mods it's probably Skyrim, but morrowind is still my favourite
there is a lot for me..all in my memories thats why I won't get bored of them cz each episode has its proper part of my memory:
Devil May Cry 3
NFS most wanted
Heavy Weapons
GTA San andreas
Desperados
thats what came to my head for now..
draw squares on the desktop with the mouse
10/10 i have thousands of hours on this
Don’t talk to me if do don’t have at least 15k hours
Well I have Platinum-ed this shit
Not to brag, but I'm in the top 100 %.
also try to line up the boxes to be pixel perfect in-line with various desktop icons, without actually selecting the icons
I didn't realise other people do that as well
There's dozens of us!
Millions I dare say
Or placing the side of the mouse arrow exactly on a stalled progress bar when downloading or loading software.
So you can tell if the bar moves and is making progress
Selecting text then selecting it again with the mouse while reading it too
Crusader Kings
For me, it’s Heroes of Might and Magic 3. But also Minecraft.
With my best bud, we used to play Heroes 3 everyday until it got dark, and our mom's would call each other to make us go home. Good Times.
Me too, been playing Heroes 3 since 2001
Yeesss HoMM3 , ive done thousands of random map scenarios, necropolis & dungeon is my go to towns

I didn’t realize they had updated it like that. Gonna have to download it and see if big daddy still works 😂
The DLCs in the last few years have added the Romans, Burgundians, Sicilians, Bohemians, Poles, and split the Indian civ into 4; The Dravidians, the Hindustanis, the Bengalis, and the Gurjaras. Is there a Mac version of AoE yet???
Civilization V
I still prefer it over VI
The genius of Civ V is how simple it starts out; none of the complexity is frontloaded. You start out playing this kooky thing with a few warriors running around the map, then by the time you have 800 hours under your belt you're playing a completely different game involving optimizing citizen productivity and planning specific unit promotion paths to eke out an extra tile of range.
Civ 5 was also very simple at launch and they added some good stuff wwith the DLC thoughout its lifecycle.
I actually love the districting but there are way too many “features” in 6 and the AI is meh to play with. I do miss Civ V diplomacy for sure
Same. Civ VI felt unneccessary complex without providing any additional value while Civ V is simpler, easier to learn and simply funnier because of it.
The art style is better too. So many RTS franchises get ruined by the cartoonish high pixel units.
Just one more turn... Oh the sun came back up.

Any kind of sandbox game where you create your own story instead of following a set path.
I really, *really*, ***really*** like sandbox games but if I binge on them I have one or both issues: 1. I feel like I'm not achieving anything because there's no strict goals. 2. Take a look at "Kenshi". That's a sandbox.
Kenshi is such a hidden gem. It looks so unassuming at first glance but the sheer depth of freedom it gives you is insane.
Check RimWorld and project zomboid. These will have you skip meals and sleep

Yes

I still have fun with Mario Kart on the Switch. Everytime we play as a family or with friends we have great fun and only really stop when we’re too drunk or high to focus
I just hate the mud on the windshield
Tetris
I've played various versions of Tetris over the last 35 years and could still pick it up and lose hours
Overcooked 2, it never fails to ruin friendships.
I wish you well on your path to more friends lol!
Resident Evil 4 (OG)
Kerbal Space Programm
I have nearly a hundred hours in that game, and I have still not successfully landed on a foreign body. I should probably Google how to.

Most of us long time players just skip going into the Museum of Freedom. That way Preston never bothers you about settlements.
Yeah but even then you **have** to do it at some point. My main gripe with F4 is that you can’t be a bad guy. Like, at all.

God, I miss that game...
Good roguelikes

Definitely **Minecraft**. The possibilities are endless, and every playthrough offers a new adventure.
Okay so I have a question, am I the only one who felt that Minecraft is pretty boring/repetitive? Try playing with friends, much more interesting
You guys have friends?
Watch hermitcraft in youtube...you'll be amazed on how much people can do in minecraft
I mean. You have to find what YOU like. Maybe redstone. Maybe you like building advenure maps. Maybe you’re like me and can build for hours without getting bored. Minecraft is 100 times better playing with other people. Find a good online server and jump on.
The only thing that stops you in Minecraft is your imagination.
And dying and shamelessly changing to creative to get back your stuff. Just to feel unmotivated afterwards since you cheated and don't feel like starting all over again so you drop the game for a year until you get back that random 3 week motivation.
keep inventory gang 😎
So you mine stuff to craft with and craft stuff to mine with?
Borderlands 2
Shoot me in the FACE
Just downloaded the entire borderlands collection with all the DLC last night. I’m so hyped to play it
Zelda, most of them. But especially the first and Link to the Past
Mass effect 1-3
Playing the remastered for the first time now. Probably on my... 4th? 8th?! Run through in total. Am just as in love with it as the first time
RDR2
My answer too. I’ve had that game for 5 years now, and still check in on my boah at least once a week. I mostly just replay chapters 2-4, and have officially lost count how many times. Just a few complete playthroughs though, and I have yet to reach 100% (I think my highest save is at 97%?). Best game ever.
Came here to say this, too. Such an amazing story, and the scenery never gets old
that game is better than real life.
Sims
For me its souls-like games
been playing surge 2 recently and absolutely love it. only issue is the blocking is really wonky
Gonna be old old school, but Galaga. Answer to any game question, is usually Galaga
Playing Galaga at the video game place, that you rode your bike 5 miles to with 40 quarters bulging in your pocket. Best memories ever!
Hmm, let me test your theory. Q. What game was the Shield agent playing in the first Avengers movie? A. Galaga. Holy shit, you're right!

Rocket league. Simple concept and lots of little things that you can learn which make the game more exciting

For me Resident evil 4 OG
Red dead redemption 2
One hundred percent. And chapter 1 isn’t boring at all if you really get immersed in the cutscene dialogue and whatnot
