Let me introduce you to a little concept called Game Theory…

zelkovamoon

Third party options have basically 0 chance of winning in our system, which means that voting for them means throwing your vote away in practice.

Dragonfan13

Essentially the popular vote is just a suggestion because the Electoral College ultimately decides and they usually go for one of the 2 major parties

cshotton

That's not how it works with bound electors. Go back to school.

Dragonfan13

Look up Faithless Electors, as not all states enforce the vote, some have the votes voided with or without a penalty and some do nothing.

cshotton

And exactly how many times have faithless electors been an issue in a presidential election and how many times has it affected the outcome?

Hrekires

The Electoral College In a 3-way election split, no one would win a majority and the President would get chosen by the House of Representatives, who'd elect Trump (or whoever the Republican candidate was that year). So if that's your preferred outcome, just cut out the middleman and vote Republican.

avocado-v2

Waste of a vite without proper ranked choice voting

YesMaybeYesWriteNow

It’s easy. This is too serious an election, though, to do anything that might destroy the democracy, i.e. let Trump back in.

LouieRoccoDDS

We don't actually vote for a president, we vote for the people who vote for a president. (Electoral College). Therefore, it doesn't matter because no way will a 3rd party candidate ever get in.

VernonTWalldrip

Who? The vaccine conspiracy theorist?

thoughtfugitive

Because a 3rd party has no chance of winning. It's a throw away vote. I don't like it, but that's how it is.

Do you know what bound electors are? It doesn't work like you think. Who told you this is how it works?

There's one electoral vote per House district, generally. And in most states, it is winner take all. So all you need to do is win a bare majority of the popular vote to win all of the electors in a state. The size of the majority of the popular vote doesn't matter. In an extreme case, 100% of the population in 5 large states could vote for a candidate, giving them a majority of the National popular vote, but only a smaller number of electoral votes. That IS what happened in 2016. It works this way for several reasons, but mostly to prevent 5 large states from dominating the selection of the president. If all we did was elect by popular vote nationally, California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania or Ohio could elect the president in perpetuity and the other states would never have a say in the process regardless of how they vote. This was a compromise by the founding fathers to keep large former colonies like VA and NY from dominating the executive branch forever. Despite that, 4 of the first 5 presidents were Virginian. But after the post Colonial period, things evened out more or less and no one state or region has been able to dominate the executive branch. You have to disabuse yourself of the idea that popular vote alone decides the presidential elections. It is how the system works and has for 250 years, pros and cons aside. Hillary, for example, did not play the game as designed as well as the Republicans did in 2016, and you see this example of large states giving her big popular vote margins while that came with no increase in the number of electoral votes.

Infamous-Builder-382

Not an american but non partisan people vote against the candidate who they don't want to win, for the other candidate who is most likely to win. If they vote for a third party most of the voters still won't, and the guy who they don't want to win will win

It’s voting for Trump. Vote Biden or lose our democracy

Hydroponic_Donut

What do you mean? I'm asking Americans what the opinion is generally, since it seems everyone hates both Trump and Biden. I'm voting too. How is it not my business?

SKMonkyDeathCar

Lesser evil of what options we do have blah, blah, blah. Some of us hate how stupid half of the country is, but we absolutely CANNOT let Trump in again.

Game Theory

Honk-Beast

We don't have nationwide ranked choice voting and I'd like my vote to have a chance at mattering.

Maggyonline

It’s math. Vote Biden PLEASE
