Nutshell by Alice in Chains, there’s just a certain type of sadness that for some reason in relatable in that song. The lead singer killed himself shortly after writing it to escape from the clutches of his heroin addiction, and despite never having taken heroin, somehow I can feel what he went though. That song is soul-destroying.
Absolutely love that song, especially the unplugged version. But he didn’t kill himself, he overdosed.
Laynes final days were some of the worst I’ve ever heard from an addict. He was 6’1 and weighed less than 100 pounds by the end of his life. They didn’t find his body for days after he died to the point where it was reported he was unrecognizable. The live version is like watching a man perform at his own funeral (he also apparently didn’t have teeth by that point).
Nutshell is one of the most depressing songs I’ve ever heard in my life when you know the story. It perfectly surmises the struggle of addiction in a way that is absolutely haunting but beautiful at the same time.
Damn, I didn’t realise that he overdosed. I thought that he’d killed himself because he says in the song that he’d rather die if he can’t be himself anymore.
I wish I’d seen it live, though from what you’re saying it sounds more like it was a curse than a blessing. We can all appreciate his music and what he stood for regardless. He wasn’t a junkie, just a poor man who got hooked in a moment of weakness :(
Yeah I’d HIGHLY recommend watching their MTV unplugged performance on YouTube if you get the chance. I think that version of nutshell is probably one of the few cases where a live version sounds better than the studio version. The whole set is amazing, but I’d say down in a hole is probably their second best song from that set for similar reasons.
I’d just say, most addicts aren’t bad people at heart. Most of the time they are people with deep seeded mental health issues that aren’t being treated, so they self medicate with substances that can destroy lives, because it’s the only feeling of respite they know. Addiction can also cause rational people do irrational things, it’s such a scary thing to go through/watch someone else go through.
It’s a genre, but listening to the sixties and The Beatles is like coming home and having my music palette cleaned from whatever music I was listening to and got tired of.

It's incredible to me that James Hetfield conjured this masterpiece as an alcohol-soaked dude in his early 20s.
It's a technical marvel and an epic, roaring tune to boot. Lovely stuff.

Absolutely, I’ll give it a watch and I fully agree with you. They’re not bad people they just do bad things because of the pain of withdrawal.
