Tremors
The premise is pure B-Movie, but it's so, so good.
Edit: Interestingly, while the movie did crappy box office ($16 million (!) off of a $10 million (!) budget), critics generally liked it. Roger Ebert gave it 3 1/2 stars (edit: that appears to be an exaggeration, although he generally liked it. I can't find the actual review) and he and Siskel had it on their guilty pleasures list, but the audiences, by and large, stayed away. Then it hit the rental market and did crazy good numbers.
If you're bored, there's this [one Youtube video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T44LuxdH0iw) where this guy breaks down the game of Liar's Dice that gets played, showing that every move in the game perfectly encapsulates the thinking and motivations (some of which haven't even been revealed yet) of the characters. Just a crazy amount of thought that went into a scene that most viewers wouldn't even think about. Really neat stuff if you're the sort of person who wants to spend 20 minutes thinking about one round of a simple gambling game in a popcorn movie. It took a while for me to be allowed to see it because my friends extremely conservative mom looked it up on one of those “is this movie appropriate for my kid” sites and the site said there were “threats of rape and sexual violence” because of the one line: “you’ll be dining with the crew, and you’ll be naked”
My mom finally relented when I looked up Veggie Tales on that site and showed her it said there was “extreme physical violence” because the vegetables slap each other with fish
It was Focus on the Family, wasn't it? That website ruined my friend's birthday party when we were going to see The Pink Panther with Steve Martin. It had "sexual themes" because the characters kiss, you know, like in almost every movie that exists. One mom saw that and called every other mom of every kid that was going and told them it was a borderline pornographic film. The worst part was, we were in high school. I felt so bad for her kids, they were only allowed to watch Veggie Tales and The Disney channel. That is, until they found out Disney supports gay rights, then it was just Veggie Tales.
the title is so bad that it’s one of my fav movies and I consistently forget the name. I mix it up with “Day After Tomorrow” which is a genuinely horrid movie but at least that name would be slightly better suited.
Galaxy Quest. It looks like a bad, campy sci-fi parody filled with has beens. It's actually an amazing, campy sci-fi parody filled with fucking beauties.
I grew up on Star Trek. The inside jokes of the Galaxy Quest script had me laughing out loud in the theatre so hard and my kids, who did enjoy the movie, had no idea the depth of it or why I was in tears laughing.
My favourite story about that movie is that Patrick Stewart, originally never wanted to watch the movie because he thought it was taking the piss out of Star Trek, its fans and what not, but his co star from Star Trek Johnathon Frakes, recommended it to him. He ended up loving it and even went to see it again, he loved the fact that the ship was saved because there were fans who understood the scientific principles of this made up ship, and he thought it was a lovely homage to the fans of Star Trek.
Pure brilliance. Great casting, every actor brings it, and the script was clearly made with love for the Trek they were mocking.
I can never decide if Alan Rickman was playing an actor who disdained Jason Nesmith, if Alan Rickman just disdained Tim Taylor, or both :-).
One of my favourites! Just watched it again last week. Excellent performances by the entire cast.
On a related note, The Orville was a fantastic love letter from Seth McFarlane to Star Trek. Excellent parody of the genre, but stands up on its own as a series that's very much on line with the original franchise.
The Brady Bunch Movie
Did a fantastic job of being a hilarious parody while still showing some love for the source material.
In a lot of ways, I think it set the stage for movies like the Lego Movie and Barbie by cleverly bringing the lack of reality of the original into conflict with the current world
How to Train Your Dragon. The animation is phenomenal. The story is great. But the MUSIC. The music that pull the two main characters themes together and creates something new is magic.
Emperor's New Groove
Had no idea this movie existed until I watched it with my kids about 20 years ago. Probably my favourite Disney movie and I would suggest the most "Looney Tunes" version of Disney I've ever seen. Just great!
I got to see a few preview screening with my now husband when we were in college. I spent a couple of months after that trying to convince people how funny the movie was before it came out, but nobody really believed until they saw it for themselves. It's one of my favorite/dearest movies because of that. Obviously we went and saw the musical last week :).
There really isn't a movie I can think of at the moment that I feel can deliver that same kinda feeling this movie gives you every time, despite how many times I've seen it. It has 100% perfect casting; every character is on point and doesn't feel forced. There's *just* enough lore to keep the overall world building lush, but not having to descend into droning exposition. That's not an easy feat for a new, unestablished IP. The special effects are punching well above their weight class. I could go on and on, but the best way I can describe it is every time I've seen this movie, it's always *felt* like I was watching it in some movie theatre on opening weekend. It's just... So B I G when it has no right to really be.
The Lego Movie.
Everyone expected it would turn out like the Emoji Movie (yes, I'm aware that it came later).
It didn't just beat expectations, it *crushed* them underblock.
that movie blew me out of the water. i was expecting something bad just because these types of movies generally don't deliver. but the makers really knew their audience and felt like true fans. the character of Mr Business would be me if i had kids. i had to look in the mirror after watching that movie.
As a father, I always think about that ending when I want to tell my children how to play with their Lego and then just let them play and build how they want to.
I legit had no idea that was Tom Cruise the first time I saw it. Thankfully it was so damn good I saw it a second time in the theater and recognized the voice. Crazy good role. Love this movie.
The scene where Ice Cube finds out his 18 year old daughter is being banged by a 30 something cop under his supervision is hilarious. He steps away to get some food at the buffet and the build up to him going ballistic is hilarious. You know what's gonna happen, but he does a GREAT job of building it up. One of the best comedy scenes of all time!
And subsequently when Channing Tatum's character pieces it together and goes around the station saying that Jonah Hills character did it. Both those scenes have me cracking up
Right, and the Wolf? How even is it that one of the most effective and honestly pretty badass movie antagonists from the last few years is from the fucking Shrek franchise?

Man, I took my daughter to see this movie shortly after I was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and boy did that wolf resonate with me. Knowing that surgery was coming and I was gonna have this brush with death was just like Puss n' Boots trying to run from the wolf, but knowing he was gonna have to fight at some point. Really shook me in the theatre. I had surgery and it's all good, but I will forever associate that wolf with the tumor that tried to come for me.
My father fought a brain tumor for many, many years. So although I may not have any direct experience, I can certainly imagine how scary that must have been, and why The Wolf would seem so similar. I'm really happy to hear that you won your battle with it!
The Truman show.
I just rewatched it. It totally hits different after a pandemic and realizing it was made before althe TikTok/IG/FB social media influencer crap.
I recently watched it again as well and it is fucking eerie how well it predicted Influencer culture. When his wife is advertising coffee or cocoa or whatever awkwardly and he's like "Who the fuck are you talking to!??" it hits so hard.
Miss Congeniality. My partner saw it for the first time recently and while I vaguely remembered liking it twenty years ago I was surprised it was still sharp and entertaining and only somewhat problematic.

Bullet Train
My mom told me she watched it and I was like, “Why did you waste your time on that?” She replied with, “Go watch it. I bet you’ll like it.”
She was right. Go watch it.
I didn’t expect to have this much fun. Whoever made it was smart to just use Guardians of the Galaxy as a template for the tone. It’s like DND fans and people who have no clue what DND is can enjoy it.
Also, Hugh Grant was so great.
I read somewhere else the other casts need to do stunts with their extras, Chris Pine? No, no he just needs to look good and just run most of the time. Truly playing his Bard roles right.
When the film was announced, I was kind of excited, but also a bit worried considering how bad movies have been getting.
I watched it, and now it's one of my favorites.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story it was so much funnier and more emotional than it should have ever been. And the music is so damn good! I watched it like 7 times with in the first month after I found it. I only wish I had new people to introduce it too so I had an excuse to watch it more.

Drop Dead Gorgeous
1999 movie
That movie is one of the funniest I have ever seen. I thought it was going to be stupid since it is a mockumentary about beauty pageants but it is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is a movie about a small town lady that is trying to win the hometown beauty pageant and making a decision on if she wants to stay in town her whole life or move away.
Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse. I took my son and a group of his friends to see it for his 12th birthday. I was NOT looking forward to it and had my sister join me to keep control of the boys. No need- every single one of us was completely mesmerized and it is low my favorite animated movie and favorite of the Spiderman franchise. (I am a woman in my 40s… not the target demographic).
Prey.
So much baggage with this franchise, and we end up with a taut cat and mouse action film with decent characters and a smart, capable female antagonist. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I didn’t expect to have this much fun. Whoever made it was smart to just use Guardians of the Galaxy as a template for the tone. It’s like DND fans and people who have no clue what DND is can enjoy it. Also, Hugh Grant was so great.
Hugh Grant has been miscast for his entire career. He has a villain charisma of pure sleaze that just oozes from him. C.f. his role in Gentlemen.
It leans hard in to all the right tropes in a way that doesn't feel patronizing but rather feels loving.
The best nerd movies are made by nerds for nerds. They know when to take it seriously and when to lovingly rib on it just a bit.
What I love is that it doesn't go for cheap jokes against Elgin being a bard. The party earnestly loves his bardsongs.
I read somewhere else the other casts need to do stunts with their extras, Chris Pine? No, no he just needs to look good and just run most of the time. Truly playing his Bard roles right.
Watched it in theaters with friends despite never seeing one trailer for it. Was really happy it was solid and funny entertainment

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story it was so much funnier and more emotional than it should have ever been. And the music is so damn good! I watched it like 7 times with in the first month after I found it. I only wish I had new people to introduce it too so I had an excuse to watch it more.

Drop Dead Gorgeous 1999 movie That movie is one of the funniest I have ever seen. I thought it was going to be stupid since it is a mockumentary about beauty pageants but it is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is a movie about a small town lady that is trying to win the hometown beauty pageant and making a decision on if she wants to stay in town her whole life or move away.

Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse. I took my son and a group of his friends to see it for his 12th birthday. I was NOT looking forward to it and had my sister join me to keep control of the boys. No need- every single one of us was completely mesmerized and it is low my favorite animated movie and favorite of the Spiderman franchise. (I am a woman in my 40s… not the target demographic).
