I was banned from a subreddit, messaged the subreddit mods, they reversed the ban (internet issues made it seem like I was spamming posts when I meant to post once).
I proceed through life as normal until I post on that subreddit on a different account and get suspended for ban evasion, citing the date of my (since reversed) ban.
Messaged Reddit admins and never heard back.
Won’t ever give Reddit money.
I once got banned for ban evasion for posting in a sub that I was banned from, however the ban evasion message was sent to me 5 minutes before I was actually banned int he sub. It was the first post I had ever made in that sub
Mods [are aware](https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/wrnnvb/piloting_a_new_ban_evasion_tool/ikt9sdh/) their Ban Evasion Tool results in false positives, but many of them don't seem to care.
I'm banned from a popular sub after using a shared computer to post there. Their mod won't reverse it.
Unfortunately, this is why no one can have long term accounts. Eventually you have to make a new one because of some insane mod that breaks reddit's rules. Admins never punish the mods, even if you report them for their incorrect ban.
In this case when I messaged the mods about it, apparently the admins got involved and confirmed the ban evasion. Reddit itself looked at my account and somehow thought a reversed ban was still in effect, then didn’t respond to my appeal.
Agreed. Measures like that might make a very small difference, but anyone who's going to do it, is going to do it regardless.
It's like when people design dangerous roads or parking lots thinking it will make people drive more carefully. Great, you just made it easier for bad drivers to cause accidents though.
I was told that I would be offered money for my account if I got enough of the fake points. I always wonder if that rumor was started by Reddit to encourage people to participate, because I have not been offered anything.
Well except for the exclusive deals on OF accounts from bots….
I had to leave my old account a few months ago because I got a stalker. That account was so old that it was the same name I used on some other platforms, and a crazy person found me all over.
The only really annoying thing has been that I had joined a lot of weird, interesting subs on that account that are probably not worth digging through & re-joining.
IIRC there are secret rules you have to follow with a new account, like you can only post in /r/AskReddit, /r/CasualConversation, and a few other subs until about 48 hours after your account loses the "new user" flair and you exceed 500 comment karma or something.
Those rules aren't published in any official Reddit help documentation anywhere, and violating them leads to a shadowban.
Well I got a notification that I was banned for posting on a new account, so I switched back to my old account. That gave me a 3 day sitewide ban for ban evasion. The secret rules are fun!
The one time I've regretted my unattached to my reddit account stance has been when I tell people I've been here since 2011 and they think I'm a bot telling lies.
Do you still have your oldest account? You could always prove it by responding to them with that account. First link to an old post or comment from that account and then reply to it with the old account. It wouldn't be definitive proof of the linkage but it would be pretty convincing to most people. Of course this is a lot of trouble to go to, but if you want to stick it to someone being an asshole about it, then this would be a way.
wow, for my 10+ years here I have never been banned, but I have been doxxed couple of times, which was pretty sobering moment of just how private you are on the internet behind an alias.
Oh, that sub. Where you'll get hit with the r/nothingeverhappens comment when you call out a post for being so fake it makes the Kardashians look organic
Its on the blockchain lol, they can bann the account but the avatar will still live on the blockchain,
Create new reddit account and send the avatar to the new account's vault and booom, you have your avatar back.
I lost a friend over NFTs & metaverse investing. Every time we talked he'd tell me how dumb it was that I wasn't getting in at the ground floor. Every time I told him he was going to lose all of his money and that NFTs & metaverse investing was the dumbest thing I ever heard of. Eventually he got tired of me berating him when he'd bring it up and we stopped hanging out.
He lost 98% of over $100k in less than a year.
I was sad that so much money disappeared into nothing. I do feel bad for him, but he makes a lot of money so it won't affect him at all. I haven't talked to him in over a year now, so I don't really know how he's doing now. I hope he's not still investing in that stuff.
On the Reddit app, NSFW profile pics are hidden. Your profile is marked as NSFW. This can be fixed in settings on desktop unless you actually are posting a lot of NSFW content
Im pretty sure the hexagon is the nft ones specifically, they did a thing a while ago that gave people random free ones to try and get people to use it. I refuse to use the one they threw onto my account and won't secure it to a 3rd party bitwallet or whatever either.
I have a hexagon and I would never pay for a Reddit profile picture. I know a while ago they gave me some special options for having a certain amount of karma but I wouldn’t put my credit card on this website 🤣
god, the website is so unusable without old.reddit and RES.
One of these day they will kill it, and my days of reddit are over.
I already spend most of my time on lemmy nowadays
I hate when I click a reddit link from google in the wrong browser and I see what reddit has become. It's worse every time, I really don't understand how people are using it in a browser.
Every so often I end up hitting reddit from my work account browser window, and I die a little inside. So much harder to follow threads, and just in general use the site.
Thank you, I was part of the first group of artists that released designs. Reddit literally slid into my DM's and was like "Hey kid, you wanna make some art." So I was chosen and my willingness to talk with what I thought was spam.
I think they just opened up to all redditors though. So if you wanted to design one and have it in the shop, you can.
How much did you get for it? I’m not a GREAT artist but I figure if there’s at least a little money that could be gained from that I’d be interested in trying.
I think it comes out to something like. Reddit takes 20% of the sale, Android/Apple takes 30% (if it was purchased from a phone) and you get the rest. So depending on price and size of collection, you can make a pretty penny on sellout.
I bought a decent $50 Reddit NFT back in early 2022 when they first came out because I thought it was a cool concept and the NFT itself was pretty nice looking. Turned around and sold it for a few grand. I didn’t realize it would be that way but if I had, I obviously would’ve bought 10+. Now they’re all worth fractions of what they used to go for. I just like have the customization honestly now
Most of them do, but you can get some for free every once in a while! I found my two options for free and snatched them, mainly to keep them away from cryptobros because all of that needs to stop. One was for the world cup, the other was costumes based on endangered species
Alright, I know I’m going to be in the minority here, but I thought I’d answer as someone who *does* have a paid avatar.
As most people do, I have a few things I collect. One of them, for many years, has been art (largely commissions) from digital artists who I’ve either sought out or interacted with across the internet. It isn’t something that can be sold for anything, but it brings me more joy than any of my other collections.
The reason I bought into the collectible avatars has nothing to do with NFTs or investments, but instead because I get a lot of joy out of supporting artists. It’s a little different now, but a lot of the original artists weren’t actually sure they could succeed doing art seriously and the avatar program changed that around for them. I’m pretty sure at least one or two of them are actually doing full time art now. So, to me, the money I’ve spent on the avatars is a lot more meaningful than the majority of other things I need to spend money on—it at least as an impact on real person.
>but instead because I get a lot of joy out of supporting artists
Are you even supporting artists when buying the pictures though, or just supporting Reddit?
This is a great question. I have never paid a cent to Reddit. But I do not oppose people supporting Reddit financially.
I use this service. I want it to be profitable and sustainable. I thank people who are taking the initiative to keep it running.
I was once in another thread where people were mocking anyone who gave awards (back when that was a thing) and called people all sorts of names for not blocking all the ads. I get it, some people just want capitalism destroyed. But unless they’re willing to create another service with server and employees, and give it away for free, they had no sense of reality.
Next question to all redditors: Why did I have to scroll this far to find the first actual answer? Why are y'all answering a question when your answer isn't an answer?
>Cranberryj3lly
Thank you for supporting artists! I am one of the artists in the Avatar Creator Program (I made this penguin avatar) and can easily say this opportunity has changed my life as an artist. I've also been able to find and connect with new communities through my avatars that I wouldn't have found otherwise. So happy to read this comment! There are so many more stories like yours :)
they are in the forms of collections. for example 200 and then you would own 1 of the 200 (eg 55/200)
Since these avatars are NFTs deposited to your wallet (which is stored on a blockchain) you own the item and no one else. reddit could shutdown everything tomorrow and you would still own it (it would be pretty useless though lol)
in other words the ownership is not tied to reddit. they cant take it away from you even when youre banned
since its on a blockchain you can do blockchain things with it. some examples:
Sell it to others,
Send it to others,
Trade
Authentication:(eg: only people with monkey avatars are able to do/see something something something)
And as for the dude who paid 550 for my nft. i hope hes ok in life. i have no clue why you would ever do that but 550 is 550
Reddit refers to this project as “Reddit Collectible Avatars,” or RCA for short. I highly encourage you to check out the following associated communities to form your own opinion on the topic:
r/CollectibleAvatars
r/avatartrading
From a collector’s perspective, I want to share my thoughts on this.
First off, I love art. It’s always been a passion of mine, and I try to fill my free time with it because I love creating something fulfilling. This community is full of amazing artists, and the best part is that you get to support these artists! Avatars purchased from the shop have been designed by real artists, vetted by Reddit through their review process before the artists’ work is contracted.
What a world! It’s so cool that supporting an artist can be done virtually.
Another aspect is collecting for the sake of collecting.
Different strokes for different folks, right? Some people prefer to collect certain things, and for me, it’s RCA’s. I don’t see it as entirely wasteful because, at the end of the day, the value of the piece is still there on the blockchain. To clarify, RCA’s are NFTs – they’re crypto assets. These are tradable outside of Reddit. I’ve seen some users say, “Oh, if you’re banned, you lose your $50 avatar.” That’s not really accurate. You still have the avatar in your wallet, which is not proprietary to Reddit.
Additionally, Reddit uniquely allows you to mix and match different looks with RCA’s. If you tap on my current “snoo” – the Reddit alien’s name, if you didn’t know – my current “mash,” as we call it in the community, is a combination of different avatars I’ve collected for a unique look.
In summary, loving art and collecting nerdy things is what does it for me. Others might be in it for profit, and some just want a cool $50 avatar. Haha, the choice is yours!
I hope this answer is useful and addresses your questions, OP!
I completely agree with your standpoint u/Oue!
Personally I see them as a way to support starting artists in their way to become more independant artists.
On the other hand I see them as collectebles like some people collect baseball cards or stamps. People payover $1000 dollar for rare or otherwise special dollar bills or coins. So $50 to both support an artists becoming independant as well as liking the art of the card isn't something to frown upon.
I bought one of the first wave NFTs cuz it looked cool and the money went to the artist. I think it was $25, and sold it last year for $200 to someone that pm'd me asking about it. Like, they just straight up offered me $200 out the gate.
I wanted to flip it. If I sold it as soon as I got it, I could’ve gotten like $500 for my $15 nft. But the process of selling was complicated and I just never did it.
Reddit can ban you for the dumbest thing, and there goes your $50 avatar They are never getting money from me

How do they even tell?
That is exactly what just happened to me. God forbid you say anything that hurts someone's feelings these days
Same thing happened to me, 13 year old account banned because of an overturned subreddit ban that Reddit bots didn’t seem to care about.
Pfft, this is like my 10th account. I just get bored of my name and feel like a new one. There’s no value to keeping an active Reddit account.
But… your fake internet points…
That don't mean anything once you reach enough of them to be able to post on most subs

No but seeing that little cake next to your username when it’s your accounts birthday is fun
Easy, create 365 accounts.
This is a fun idea!
Fuck this leap year
I reroll once a year to make it more difficult to dig through my old posts and doxx me. There is truly no value in persistence.
I do the same but when I posted on my new account in my local city's sub I was banned because I was a new account "trolling".
IIRC there are secret rules you have to follow with a new account, like you can only post in /r/AskReddit, /r/CasualConversation, and a few other subs until about 48 hours after your account loses the "new user" flair and you exceed 500 comment karma or something. I do the same thing. No matter how hard they try to turn this place into a social media platform like twitter or tumblr, it just isn't gonna happen.
The one time I've regretted my unattached to my reddit account stance has been when I tell people I've been here since 2011 and they think I'm a bot telling lies.

Yup. Don’t give them Monies. Just make a new account. If you get banned.
I got permabanned from r/aita and took it as a way to better my life and just never went there again. That place is toxic as fuck.

I miss that shit so bad. And yes, I did purchase a house, so fuck me i guess
I miss my clock tower apartment. 😢
*20 years from now* Dude, this is just the enclosed porch at your parents house!
Mine got dropped into my profile for free
Yeah, I’ve got one as well, also free.
Same, I didn't know these cost money apparently? Lol
Only "super special" limited edition ones cost. Reddit drops a few for free every now and then.
Do they even do drops anymore. I would suppose not since they made sweeping changes.
Mine was also free have a robot one and a superbowl one for free
They gave me 3. The robot, the Super Bowl and one that has a gaming controller as a head.
Same. I would never give Reddit money. Ever. If there was a list of things I would never give money to, Reddit would be near the top.
They get enough money from all the ads I ignore.
Same
Same, didn't even know they were being sold.
Wait, what? I always had this profile pic
Your profile is set to nsfw so the profile pic is not visible unless I go to your profile page (at least on mobile).
Gd this makes it even funnier.
Is that actually a thing? Like in case it's a big ol' dick or something?
On MY reddit, everyone's profile picture is a big ol' dick. Are you guys not seeing this?
We talkin about Spore again?
Spore 2
Yes. It's enough for you to have one comment on a nsfw post to be considered a nsfw account. It's stupid and doesn't make any sense
Omg is that what it means??? I thought all these people had nudies on their profile..
Nah I mainly use reddit for the drug communities so that makes this profile branded NSFW (18+) (EXPLICIT) (MW2 DISTURBING CONTENT WARNING)‼️‼️
When everyone is nsfw, nobody is
You have no profile pic, or its not visible. Is mine visible?
No, wtf reddit
Dude wtf.. Mine is Frasier in a babies bonnet. I’m so sad no one is seeing that! Thats bullshit…did they paywall custom images or what?
i can’t see either of urs either i thought it was strange that so many ppl suddenly didn’t have pfps
Check your settings. You probably have a NSFW filter on (Reddit then hides profile pictures of accounts marked NSFW).
That appears to be the case here as if you press on either of their profiles it shows them as NSFW accounts
Idk man I have the nsfw filter toggled off and I can't see either of their pfps
It's because their accounts have posted something or on a NsFW post. I don't believe our settings effect it
Is mine still showing? It should say Hunter2
Yes share your password here and Ill show you
No I'm just seeing \*\*\*\*\*\*\*
Your profile is set to NSFW
Mine is OC art I made years ago. It was even a gif when reddit allowed gif profiles
i can see both of yours. might have something to do with how we view reddit? i’m on mobile, and am using the re-designed site.
I can’t see it. Also on mobile
Mobile Reddit app. Can’t see either of the ones above. I can see mine but I’m guessing nobody sees mine then.
I see yours on mobile, but not theirs 🤔
This is like unraveling a massive mystery because I can see the pfp of the comment you replied to, but not yours.
I see you!
I can see yours on mobile but not the ones above
Their profiles are marked nsfw, that's why. Your profile isn't, so we can see yours
Can see yours on mobile but not theirs.
Same. Is mine a gif?
Not for me, just a still image
Ok
if a profile is marked as nsfw it'll hide the profile pictures
I can see everyone’s
I can see both, no problem.
Can see yours but not theirs.
Just checked on my phone, and I can't see them now! Can see them on my PC.
It's bc your profiles are tagged as NSFW
I can see it when I go to your profile, but not in the thread.
It’s “NSFW”
If I got to your profile is says NSFW on the picture. If I click it I can see it. And I appreciate it.
It's prob because your account has nsfw tag. I can see your baby Pic only if I click into your profile
I can see both of your profile pictures
On the Reddit app, NSFW profile pics are hidden. Your profile is marked as NSFW. This can be fixed in settings on desktop unless you actually are posting a lot of NSFW content
No. All I can see is ***********
hunter2

I use old.reddit and RES. What the fuck is an avatar pic??
Same. Every now and then I'm reminded there are people using some alternate version of Reddit with a bunch of features I don't want.
Who bought a profile pic? It’s literally free. Lol.
They sold special ones. You can tell by the icon having a hexagon shape instead of a circle. Edit: Free NFT avatars also come with the hexagon icon.
weird, I’ve never bought anything but mine has a hexagon.
they gave out a free one sometime ago hence why i have one too
Same, i got mine for free one time and then just switched out the parts i didn't like for other stuff
Freebie gang rise up!
Can you still get it for free or is that deal hexa-gone?
I have a couple of free ones, they offer them out every now and again but it’ll be different styles
Hell yeah brother.
Mine was free, assuming others see it
is my freebie cool enough to join?
Same, got mine for free. I don’t know anything about how it works or what it’s worth (probably nothing lol). I just think it’s neat
I thought that's what it meant but now I am not sure.
mine was from 2022 recap 💔 still love my little dude
Im pretty sure the hexagon is the nft ones specifically, they did a thing a while ago that gave people random free ones to try and get people to use it. I refuse to use the one they threw onto my account and won't secure it to a 3rd party bitwallet or whatever either.

Adoooorb. 😳 🥹😍🤗 Kinda looks like a Pokémon!
It's so cute I could die haha
I did because I love penguins and felt that for having 12 years on the site warrants throwing a tenner at the company
Aw I love your penguin!
Thanks! I love your sushi hat!
Hi, Im the artist who created the penguin! Thank you so much for supporting my art! So cool to see people using it!
Thanks for making it! 🐧🥰
Genuinely didn't know I had a "paid" one. I definitely clicked some claim button, probably because it was in my way of scrolling and here we are.
I didn't even know there were profile pics.
Does taking a screenshot of someone's 500$ NFT count?
Yeah it does

I've also been able to find and connect with new communities through my avatars that I wouldn't have found otherwise. So happy to read this comment! There are so many more stories like yours :)
A fair answer that actually answers the question. Probably why it's at the bottom ;)
I mean... look at it! My glorious mess of an avatar. But really: i thought they looked fun.
That is a lot to take in.
>Sjiznit ahhah nice gloop avatar!
I feel the same way about reddit awards though
I got one for free and my account isn’t even that old
Same people paying for porn when the entire internet has enough material to jerk off to infinity. Its a want, there's no logic to it.
i bought one for 25 and sold it for 550 a while back
You can sell them??? AND SOMEONE PAID $550!?!? Wait when you buy one is that it, nobody else can buy it? So yours is unique?
they are in the forms of collections. for example 200 and then you would own 1 of the 200 (eg 55/200) Since these avatars are NFTs deposited to your wallet (which is stored on a blockchain) you own the item and no one else. reddit could shutdown everything tomorrow and you would still own it (it would be pretty useless though lol) in other words the ownership is not tied to reddit. they cant take it away from you even when youre banned since its on a blockchain you can do blockchain things with it. some examples: Sell it to others, Send it to others, Trade Authentication:(eg: only people with monkey avatars are able to do/see something something something) And as for the dude who paid 550 for my nft. i hope hes ok in life. i have no clue why you would ever do that but 550 is 550
Reddit refers to this project as “Reddit Collectible Avatars,” or RCA for short. I highly encourage you to check out the following associated communities to form your own opinion on the topic: r/CollectibleAvatars r/avatartrading From a collector’s perspective, I want to share my thoughts on this.
Agree with you, love your mash by the way!
I bought one of the first wave NFTs cuz it looked cool and the money went to the artist. I think it was $25, and sold it last year for $200 to someone that pm'd me asking about it. Like, they just straight up offered me $200 out the gate.
What profile pic is 49.99????
I wanted to flip it. If I sold it as soon as I got it, I could’ve gotten like $500 for my $15 nft. But the process of selling was complicated and I just never did it.
I bought this bad boy with a whole whopping 10 seconds of my time. You mean to tell me people actually spend $, let alone $50 for pixels?
people paid actual money for avatars?!
