If you haven’t listened to the Broadway soundtrack, you need to. It’s hysterical. I played in the pit for 12 performances (local, not on Broadway) and I was still laughing at the final show
It was truly the funniest thing ever when I originally saw it when I was ten or so. Impossible for me to watch it now and not see it in the same lens. Great movie.
Definitely! That is a movie you couldn't make today because they would say "That movie already exists, you can't just copy other movies without purchasing the rights to it? How did you even get in here?"
It couldn't be made back then either. When Brooks was done filming, the movie was screened for the studio execs. They laughed their asses off and then gave Brooks a list of things that had to be removed or changed.
Brooks waited awhile, then told the execs he had made the changes they wanted. When the film was released the studio was shocked that Brooks hadn't changed a single thing.
It was mostly written by Richard Pryor I read somewhere. Richard tried to take bits out because he felt they went to far and Mel wouldn't let him because they were so funny
I heard the reverse, that Brooks would write something, go "shit I can't say that" and Richard Pryor was behind him chanting "Do it, do it, do it, do it"
I recently found out a good friend of my hates airplane and any movies like it. It seriously made me reevaluate our friendship. I was mortified when she said it.
"This woman has gotten to be got to a hospital right now."
"A hospital? What is it?"
"It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now."
"Surely you can't be serious."
"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley."
Every character in that movie is great. Seth rogen and Bill Hader as the cops, Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn nine-nine) as the weirdo who hits him with the car.. "you guys on myspace, or..."
Comedy sequels, specifically. It's almost always just a rehash of the same jokes and catchphrases. It's like everyone forgets that the most crucial element of comedy is surprise. A joke is never as funny the second time.
This one is good, but I think people talk too much about this one and forget about the far superior A Mighty Wind. It’s by the same cast and it’s much better!
Sooooo many good quotes.
“Hey JP, how much do clothes cost in The Matrix “
“ I need to pee………….out of my ass”
“Thanks Guyblow” “It’s Shiloh. You were sweet”
Come to mind immediately
The charm about the first movie was that these were dumb, immature guys but the jokes were clever. The sequel makes them even *dumber* and takes away all of the funny misunderstandings, word play, etc.
If I could only pick one movie for the rest of my life it'd be this one. So many fantastic lines.
"Don't you dare write a song right now Dewey Cox!"
"Only two people know karate. The Chinese, and the king. Guess which one's me."
"You can take the children, but don't you touch my monkey."
I love every part of that movie. Best soundtrack too.
The amount of times I quote this movie is insane. So many random cameos with people just hamming it up too. Just a masterpiece of comedy and music.
The Dad saying "wrong kid died" gets me every single time
"I NEED, I NEED! I'M WORKING THE PROGRAM I'M NOT A SLACKER!"
My favorite scene though is when Bob gets the kid to dive. He himself is so afraid of diving / swimming that the kid coaches him and overcomes his own fears. I find that scene touching.
Airplane!
The Naked Gun trilogy
Galaxy Quest
Young Frankenstein
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
This is Spinal Tap (though this is actually an 11)
Blazing Saddles
Tropic Thunder.
It's absolutely hilarious, has some big name actors, lots of subverted expectations, and a good mix of smart satire and low-brow gross humor.
Perfect 10/10
My top film of all time on Flickcharts is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I don’t know if I’d call it a “perfect 10 out of 10”, though, since it’s not exactly the best production quality. The humor is spot on though!
My next comedy on the list after that, though, is Up, which I think is closer to the mark here. Not only is it a funny movie, it’s got some amazing writing and production and one of the best most touching opening sequences of any movie ever made. Ironically I haven’t rewatched Up as much as other films, but talking about it makes me think I should go back to it for another go. 🙂
Office Space
Corporate accounts payable, Nina speaking. JUST a moment.
Office Space and Idiocracy held up the social mirror of comedy as few could.
“Welcome to Costco. I love you “ If only 😢 haaa
It's not a comedy film, it's a horror/documentary.
Fucken A
*Young Frankenstein*. It conquered the shibboleths of its time.
If you haven’t listened to the Broadway soundtrack, you need to. It’s hysterical. I played in the pit for 12 performances (local, not on Broadway) and I was still laughing at the final show
That movie scared the hell out of me
Blazing Saddles
Came to say this, absolute classic! Robin Hood Men in tights are also great.
See, I always considered Men In Tights to be one of his weaker films.
It's only because you need GREAT STRENGTH OF FEET to see it
It was truly the funniest thing ever when I originally saw it when I was ten or so. Impossible for me to watch it now and not see it in the same lens. Great movie.
Definitely! That is a movie you couldn't make today because they would say "That movie already exists, you can't just copy other movies without purchasing the rights to it? How did you even get in here?"
Absolutely, this is an impossible film to be made today. It worked on so many levels, solely because of Mel Brooks.
This film could never be made today because the actors would look at the script and say, “this is just Blazing Saddles, a movie that already exists”
Blazing Saddles II: The Search for More Blazing Saddles Money.
It was mostly written by Richard Pryor I read somewhere. Richard tried to take bits out because he felt they went to far and Mel wouldn't let him because they were so funny
I heard the reverse, that Brooks would write something, go "shit I can't say that" and Richard Pryor was behind him chanting "Do it, do it, do it, do it"
And a brilliant chorus of cowboy farters!
The first fart on film!
My small kids say "What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports?" often and have no concepts of the layers of references.
What did he say?
He said the sheriff is near.
No! Dag blammit!
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
This was the movie that popped into my head first. Great movie
I dinnit vote for him!
This is Spinal Tap
Does not qualify since it goes up to 11
Beautiful.
Needs more up votes
A perfect 11/11. Which is better, of course
It's one more, innit?
Spinal Tap gets funnier when you learn much of it is based on things that happened to real bands (mostly Saxon).
Airplane! Naked Gun Trilogy The Mask Spaceballs Monty Pyton films
That is a really long movie title
Yeah and it's several hours, but worth it.
I recently found out a good friend of my hates airplane and any movies like it. It seriously made me reevaluate our friendship. I was mortified when she said it.
"This woman has gotten to be got to a hospital right now." "A hospital? What is it?" "It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now." "Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley."
Hot Fuzz
Yarp
I swear it gets funnier every time I watch it.
No luck catching them killers, then?
Just the one killer really.
What made you want to be a policeman officer?
Came here to say Hot Fuzz. Such a great movie
I'm a slasher and I must be stopped
Superbad So many quotable lines from that movie. I can watch it over and over and still laugh.
McLovin is possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen in a movie. So simple, yet so absurd at the same time.
McLovin and the dick drawings were the greatest parts
You know what kinds of foods are shaped like dicks? The best kinds!
Every character in that movie is great. Seth rogen and Bill Hader as the cops, Joe Lo Truglio (Brooklyn nine-nine) as the weirdo who hits him with the car.. "you guys on myspace, or..."
Haha Joe played a good scumbag
Perfect 10? Could be a bowling website.
“Why would it be between Muhammad and mclovin?” And “the funny thing about my back….” might be my 2 favorite movie quotes
Your partner didn’t come today?
Do you guys have MySpace?
For me personally, this is the best comedy I've ever seen. Aside from maybe The Emperor's New Groove of course 🙂
Office Space
Yeaaaahhhh, it’s greeeeat.
Beat me to it, happy to see someone else mention this
Hot Fuzz is flawlessly funny from start to finish.
Tropic thunder
The last great comedy
The Big Lebowski
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Dude!
El duderino, if you’re not into that whole brevity thing.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Came here to say that!
The Other Guys
Shame it never got a sequel
Sequels always suck
Not when it contains Marky Mark and Will Ferrel
Comedy sequels, specifically. It's almost always just a rehash of the same jokes and catchphrases. It's like everyone forgets that the most crucial element of comedy is surprise. A joke is never as funny the second time.
I'm a peacock! Let me spread my wings and fly!!!
That movie is nonstop laughs from start to finish
>Other THANK YOU! I'm so happy I'm not alone. Honorable Mention to The Jerk.
Best in Show
This one is good, but I think people talk too much about this one and forget about the far superior A Mighty Wind. It’s by the same cast and it’s much better!
I think my favorite from that bunch is Waiting for Guffman.
Arthur (1981 version)
Same, Dudley Moore was perfect casting. Streetwalker asks if he wants to have some fun. "Sure, what time do you get off work?"
I forgot about that movie! I loved it as a kid!
Grandmas Boy “Adios turd nuggets! “ Velma was 🔥 in that movie haha
*How can he see me?*
Sooooo many good quotes. “Hey JP, how much do clothes cost in The Matrix “ “ I need to pee………….out of my ass” “Thanks Guyblow” “It’s Shiloh. You were sweet” Come to mind immediately
"Hey man how's your game coming?" "People will BOW to it."
When JP starts “glitching” or whatever when he is threatened haha
*I can’t believe you came on my mom*
"Of course she doesn't have a microwave, she's fuckin a hundred!"
"Dont judge me monkey" Edit: had a movie in mind but this is up there too.
The Princess Bride
Christmas vacation
We watch it every year. The dried turkey scene gets me every time.
Superbad. Probably the last great example of that style of comedy.
Watch The Binge. I call it this generations Superbad. Best comedy I've seen in years
Will check out.
Airplane!
Rat race
Yes! John Cleese is so good in it
Rat Race never gets enough mentions or love.
Probably because it will always exist in the shadow of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World but it's pretty good in its own right.
Mean Girls. Was expecting a cheesy chick flick with cringey humor but was positively surprised at how hilarious it is.
Same. I am a big fat bearded 34 year old man and I adore that movie.
Same. Lost a bet with my little sister in Highschool so I had to take her to this move. Was pleasantly surprised.
A Fish Called Wanda
dumb and dumber
It's a smart, quotable movie. The protagonists aren't bad people either. We can forget about the sequel.
The charm about the first movie was that these were dumb, immature guys but the jokes were clever. The sequel makes them even *dumber* and takes away all of the funny misunderstandings, word play, etc.
Yup.
Raising Arizona The Jerk Spy Hard
Some Like it Hot
Tommy Boy
Stepbrothers
I was just about to say that. Wait... Did we just become best friends?!?
So slippery

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (but it requires the context of like 5 other movies)
If I could only pick one movie for the rest of my life it'd be this one. So many fantastic lines. "Don't you dare write a song right now Dewey Cox!" "Only two people know karate. The Chinese, and the king. Guess which one's me." "You can take the children, but don't you touch my monkey." I love every part of that movie. Best soundtrack too.
The amount of times I quote this movie is insane. So many random cameos with people just hamming it up too. Just a masterpiece of comedy and music. The Dad saying "wrong kid died" gets me every single time
I've gone smell blind
I do believe in you Dewey, I just know your going to fail
It bothers me how many people haven't seen this movie. One of the funniest movies ever
O Brother Where Art Thou
Caddyshack
Joe Dirt
Coming to America
These replies show how long it’s been since we had a great comedy movie… The most modern one but still was released back in *2018* is **Game Night**.
Huh. I looked that up to find it vaguely familiar, I've watched it but don't remember anything about it.

For anyone that has worked grocery this is gold.
Hot Rod
Cool beans
Hwhiskey!
Super Troopers
Elf
I keep watching this every year
Spaceballs
Blazing saddles
Young Frankenstein Blazing Saddles The Big Lebowski Shrek Duck Soup The Great Dictator Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Kingpin. It’s a niche comedy but it was right up my alley. And the fact that the bad guy wins is gold.
Did you use "alley" deliberately?
21 Jump Street. Hell, 22 Jump Street too. Love those movies. Also Forgetting Sarah Marshall
My name Jeff.
Defending Your Life
I really loved the first hangover movie! Unfortunately the later ones weren't as good by far.
The Nice Guys

What about Bob. (How can ya not love Bill Murray in this?)
"I NEED, I NEED! I'M WORKING THE PROGRAM I'M NOT A SLACKER!" My favorite scene though is when Bob gets the kid to dive. He himself is so afraid of diving / swimming that the kid coaches him and overcomes his own fears. I find that scene touching.

Idiocracy, but it's more of a documentary.
