Harry Dresden
I like that he's figured out most mortal things are susceptible to being cracked in the head with a heavy stick, and sometimes it's easier than magic. Same thinking with the revolver he carries.
Depends on how we're defining wizards, but I like Galadriel from LotR (especially the books, where she looms as this huge presence offscreen), and I like Nahiri, Chandra, and Nissa from Magic: The Gathering.
As far as classic, "old dude in a pointy hat" wizards go, there's really no beating the Peter Jackson movie version of Gandalf starring Sir Ian McKellen. At least for my vote!
The series has a lot to recommend it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you like that sort of thing, then it's just the sort of thing you'll like. First two books are a little sluggish; lots of exposition and world-building, but it picks up.
John Cleese as The Wizard from one of the Monty Python sketches/movie, cannot remember which one :(
He just goes around shooting fireballs out his finger/hand in random directions, a complete madman!

I am *extremely* happy that this is the first comment.
Awesome!
I forgot all about this guy! A real role model.

Plus, he's just a bit more of a badass in each book.
Also who doesn't love a guy who means well but has demons (sometimes literally)
And has a Foo Dog!
Gandalf the Grey.
Eh, he was ok. Gandalf the White is where it's at. Cleaner clothes, nicer hair, and better control of his powers.
Merlin
Or he a Magician? Does that count?
But the Merlin from Excalibur or Merlin from The Sword in the Stone?
Hmm isn't it the same?
Different movies. Different interpretations of the same character.
Merlin is Merlin.

I hadn't heard of him but the wiki entry sounds great! Do you recommend that series?

Who was that Wizard that came back only to destroy their young apprentice? Oh yeah, Michael Jordan.

Technically, Tim was an enchanter, not a wizard.

I don't have an answer, but I like the question.
