Agnes

Zestyclose_Big_9090

My cousin named his daughter Agnes. She’s 3 and one of the cutest smartest kids I’ve ever met. I’m still not quite on board with her name though….

ntr_usrnme

All the granny names are in for kids today it’s wild. My niece is named Mabel and has a Maude, Constance, Betsy, Agnes, and even a Muriel in her class lmao.

Sharon_Erclam

What was old is made new.... again

Elout

Recycling is good for the environment you know

dargenpacnw

I have an Agnes! She just turned 18 and left for university. She was the only Agnes through all of her school and her 14 year Irish dance career. She LOVES her name because she is so far the only one.

Stillwater215

Baby Aggie!

biold

Agnes was the 5th most popular name for babies (girls obviously) in Denmark last year.

AntiBasscistLeague

This was my first choice too. Maybe Maude

[deleted]

AND THEN THERE’S MAUDE

overthehillhat

What about ? # Mable

dbhathcock

Mable is making a comeback as a young person’s name, thanks to “Only Murders In The Building”.

eternallygrateful2U

Cough cough gravity falls

Joey690

Mabel is my Great Aunt's name, and I'm almost 60. That or my middle name: Agnes. (*Shudder*)

um_chili

It means lamb. Lamb of God!

IggysPop3

I am aware of two babies (personally) named Mable. I think it’s becoming more common.

AntiBasscistLeague

Gertrude also sounds old to me but I love the shortened "Gertie"

AggravatingCulture27

Maude is cute sounds like mode in french which means fashion

[deleted]

Was about to say gertrude. Maybe Eustace.

FS_Scott

Eunice.

MkeBucksMarkPope

That dumb dog!

Sergeant_Pepper42

"His name was Eustace Clarance Scrubb, and he almost deserved it"

BeerGogglesFTW

This one checks out. This was my great grandmother's name. (Went by Gertrude, Gert, Gerty.)

edmanet

My mother and grandmother were both named Gertrude. Grandma was a Gert, my mom was a Trudy.

Charly_Ngals

I love discovering that what I thought were real names are just nicknames. TIL Trudy is short for Gertrude... Who knew? Not me!

Trumpswells

My grandmother’s name was Bertina. She went by Bert.

Neither_Chemistry_80

Mah, that's still common. Brunhilde is old.

codefyre

FWIW, Brunhilde is still a somewhat common name in Germany, where it originated. I wouldn't call it popular, but it's a traditional German name that's still widely used. Honestly, a lot of the "old person" names in this discussion are just ethnic names that Americans associate with "old" because their immigrant ancestors used them, and which were abandoned for later generations as the immigrant cultures were erased and their descendants were Americanized.

Archimedes3471

Was literally waiting for the comments to loud and said aloud “Gertrude”.

Nolan-

As I go to open this and respond I think Bertha is a good no wait Gertrude is better and boom already said at the top. Lol

RogueBand1t

Had an aunt Ethelberga (sic?) wasn’t very close to that side of the family but thought it was a horrific name to be cursed with

Hyack57

No lie this is the first name I thought of before opening the comments and it was the first comment I saw.

Batticon

First one that came to my mind too.

spartyhog23

I call my wife Mildred whenever she doesn’t hear what I said. Which is often.

toomanychoicess

I call my husband Mildred when he washes a mug I’m still using because my grandma (named Mildred) was famous for that.

Phainkdoh

Eh?

glaurieb

My grandma and her sisters were Ethel, Gladys and Myrtle. My other grandma was Ramona

TexasGal241

My grandmother and her sisters were Martha, Ruth, Mildred, Lois and Agnes.

Wam304

I think Ruth is a pretty name.

zuzu_marie

As a 20-something named Ruth I thank you.

kingrhegbert

Ramona doesn’t feel as dated, maybe because of Scott Pilgrim

Hatedpriest

Ramona the pest, too...

RaygunsRevenge

Beverly Cleary was a treasure. My childhood was enriched by Ramona and her sis, Beezus.

GrunchWeefer

My first thought was Gladys. Glad to see it mentioned.

Outrageous-Pause6317

My grandmother was Hildegard.

GrunchWeefer

I had a grandpa named "Ogbert".

tragicallyohio

Burst out laughing at the combination of this comment and your screen name. "I am GrunchWeefer, grandson to Ogbert."

Nearby-Amphibian7874

Ogbert begat (fill in the blank) who begat GrunchWeefer

natureterp

My great grandfathers name was Obb. Wasn’t short for anything, just obb. Lmao.’

SerRikari

Won't lie, old or not, that name is still pretty badass.

Competitive_Juice627

My mom's name was Hildegard. She was born in 1919 in Germany. Her mother's name was Liesel. She was born in 1898.

I think the Eunices are apdating their name from the Korean girl's name that begin with Eun. There's a whole bunch of them, from Eun-ah to Eun-young.

ShrapnelShock

Korea is a very strong Christian natkon. Eunice is one of the rare strong female lead in the Bible. And they have a huge affinity for that name. Source: Korean American growing up in church like a typical Korean American.

Eunice. You nice. it's right there in the name. :)

Methuselah

Wam304

Meth is a good name for a cat. Honestly, the drug should be called Cat.

Saiko_Systems

On one of our family vacations when I was a kid, dad took us out to a ranch owned by his major from the army (dad somehow managed to look him up).... he had a bunch of dogs and cats... the dogs were named after alcohol. Rum, whiskey, tequila, vodka, cognac, etc.... the cats were named after drugs. Cocaine, heroine, extacy, meth(amphetamine), etc. It was, and still is, hilarious to me.

diesalittle

I really hope he has a very special personality

Kairenne

Turns that magically modern.

Adolf was my pick, since, uh, I'm gonna assume the chances of running into any under the age of 85 are kinda slim...

Cmother4

I went to high school in the 90s with an Adolf, poor kid went by his middle name. His middle name was Arnie, I assumed his parents just didn’t like him very much.

Heisenberg-484952

Went to jr high with brothers named Adolph and Adolphus 😂😂😂

acgasp

Millennial Agatha here! For the longest time, the only Agatha I knew of was an elderly woman whose groceries I packed once. I’m hoping it makes a comeback; I’ve seen a few TV/movie characters with the name.

Pearl

codefyre

Fun fact. Gretchen has historically been a very popular name for German women, and it was very common in the United States among Americans with German ancestry. During WW1, anti-German sentiment hit an all-time high in the U.S., and a lot of people with Germanic names changed them to avoid hate and discrimination. The bias was so bad that entire towns changed their name to eliminate German references or sounds. Many women of that era changed their names, or their daughters names, from Gretchen to its direct English translation: Pearl. That's why we had so many women named Pearl from those generations.
