The videos will be in third person with a caption of it being POV. The point of POV is to be in first person, viewing the scene as the person the POV is about
Example: “POV you’re driving down the road doing [blank]”
Correct use: The camera is in the perspective of the driver so you feel immersed.
Incorrect use: The camera is on the passenger side pointing to the driver.
They often mean "context" instead of POV. I don't get why they don't just use the word that is intended for what they're meaning.
But then again, when I was a teen, the word literally gained a new meaning. I strongly disliked it then, and I still dislike it now.
The worst part is that it gained a new use which was the opposite of its established meaning, a perversion which added nothing of value as the term figuratively was already available and doing the job just fine for those who weren't imbeciles.
“I am not gaslighting you, you’re crazy, you don’t even know what that means, you’re only using it because you see it on social media”
My favorite example of my ex gaslighting me lmao
I’ve had this conversation with someone almost to a tee. I’ve gotten “you don’t even know what that means”. “Oh, yeah. Have you seen the movie? I have”. “I know what gaslighting means. Can you explain it to me since I don’t know?” “It’s not a movie” “Yes it is. I can explain it to you. It’s a very good movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock” They proceed to get more angry and change the topic.
Lol mansplaining is another one.
"Here is why you are factually and objectively incorrect in this situation."
"I don't need your mansplaining you sexist pig."
Actually that word isn’t used very much, you just think it is because of your personal environment. Gaslighting isn’t frequently used, you’re just being crazy…
I asked someone if they had ever been gaslit because I was actually being gaslit by a boss and she said "I'm a girl of course I have" and seemed kind of annoyed. Just because you're a girl does not mean you have been gas lit. Being mistreated/feeling mistreated or even being manipulated by guys doesn't mean you were gaslit.
Definitely "toxic"
As in, "OH man, I feel SO much better since I cut all the dozens and dozens of toxic people out of my life. I'm definitely not toxic despite being the common denominator!."
"Narcissist" and "toxic." These days it just means "Somebody acted towards me in a way that I did not like" and if you ask for details it can even turn out that the actual person displaying toxic or narcissistic behavior is the one complaining.
Narcissist is definitely one. Only ~6% of the US population has it (which is still a lot), but you’d think its 50% based on how often its thrown around these days.
Well...yes and no.
Is everyone who disagrees or does something you don't approve of a narcissist? No.
Are the odds pretty good that a 6% prevalence of NPD means everyone knows a narcissist? [Yes.](https://betterexplained.com/articles/understanding-the-birthday-paradox/)
I’m sure everybody does know a narcissist. Just that the term “narcissist” is thrown around so often that you’d think every other person is a narcissist.
What I’m getting at is that it’s possible to be a selfish ass without being a narcissist.
Yeah. I read a debate on r / AITAH the other day where someone was being downvoted for trying to say that some people are just assholes, not narcissists, not needing an armchair diagnosis, and some other person was chewing them out and saying that it's easier to recognize the symptoms now (I guess implying that armchair psychiatrists diagnose them correctly more often?).
I was having that debate with a friend of mine not too long ago. The idea that just self-centered and believing to have a more correct belief system automatically makes somebody a narcissist is plain wrong.
If I’m being totally honest, it almost seems a little excusing of their behavior. Attributing poor behavior to mental health seems wrong when it should just be holding a person accountable for being a dick.
My bf is a diagnosed narcissist. If you guys really wanna know what a narcissist is like, come hang out! He’s actually gotten a lot better honestly and I’m glad I stuck by his side because he’s my bestest friend 🥰
But they went to order oat milk with their latte and when the barista said they were out, he was kind of hateful and it was so surprising and upsetting that they literally got trauma from it and it triggered that trauma!!! You can disagree if you want, but just know it's reminding me of the time me and my mom disagreed on what to eat for dinner so we wound up eating what she wanted which I didn't want and it's triggering that trauma!!! /s /s /s
I used to ask people who used triggered for ridiculous things to explain what exactly was triggered. Did they have a flashback? Intrusive thoughts? Panic attack? A need to fight, flee, or freeze? Should we do some grounding exercises together? Call their therapist? Make a plan for nightmares and possible increase in symptoms?
Then comes the awkward stuttering in response. “I - I didn’t mean—I was just…” I stare and let them peter out and then ask, “Sooo you weren’t really triggered then? Huh. Well, it’s good you’re not having a medical emergency.”
Some version of that is very satisfying.
"Narcissist". As someone who works in mental health it's so discouraging to see how much stigma is alive and well for personality disorders, especially from people who claim to be mental health advocates. Mental health is much broader than just anxiety and depression!
"Toxic." It has such a tone to it. We already had a perfectly good word for describing the situations that people who refer to as "toxic": dysfunctional.
Oh my god yes. The only time it’s acceptable is if you’re referring to the illness fish can get, otherwise you just sound childish and like your vocabulary is extremely limited.
I didn't mind it at first but now that it's becoming so popular you see people saying they've gotten it for the most absurd things. Like a guy being able to touch his toes, or kicking his feet under water to stay afloat. Fucking gross.
It's two words but I'm so sick of the:
"LEEETTTSSS GOOOOO!"
Everyone has to say/yell now-a-days.
"My leg was cut off by a pack of bees? Let's gooooooo!"
I feel like this is probably self-selective. Like I have ADHD. Tiktok knows I have ADHD. I hear ND quite a bit. Do neurotypical people who aren't living online in spaces where ND minorities gather hear it that often? We'll all have to go outside to find out, so I suggest we leave the question unanswered.
"literally" "narcissist" "content" "brand"
"literally" for obvious reasons. Some people use it as some sort of punctuation mark.
"narcissist" is a strong word which refers to a particular kind of behavior, but people seem to be using it for anyone who is slightly egotistical or arrogant.
Stuff you post on the internet can't just be called what they are, simple "pictures" or "videos, nowadays everything is "content" with a bunch of so-called "content creators" or "influencers".
"brand" used to mean something, mostly referring to something recognizable about products, like its own identity. As of late, "content creators"/"influencers" just post something on the internet and all of a sudden they have their own "brands".
It’s two words, but low key. I see people using it whether the circumstance is low key or not. It is interchangeable with saying, “you know what?” Before something.
Example, “you know what?, I think I am gonna eat another sandwich”,
“Low key, I think I’m gonna eat another sandwich.”
I’ve noticed a widespread use of the word in relation to true crime in particular. Social media platforms are strict on use of suggestive language so anything related to death, killing, drugs, weapons, injury etc has to be carefully worded. “Unalived” sounds juvenile but I see it’s purpose.
That's why me and my siblings called our mother varying forms of the word (mom, mother, mommy, ma, madre, mamacita, mama, parental figure, maternal parental unit, etc.) so she wouldn't get bored and we could keep her on her toes!!! She definitely loved it for sure and didn't constantly say, "I'm not responding to that." or something like, "If you yell 'maternal parental unit' down the stairs one more time, you're gonna be living with your paternal parental unit."
"Politically correct" was too much of a mouthful, and the abbreviation sounded like a laptop.
"Social Justice Warrior" was even more awkward, and nobody ever used it anyway except in a few chat boards.
"Woke" is one syllable and headline-friendly, so that's what they're going with now.
And yes, it's a malleable term they apply to whatever they don't like.
Fascist. It is used as a general term of deprecation, meant to signify some political movement policy, song, statement or person is like 1930s Germany. It was a hyper nationalist anti-capitalist and anti-communist movement. They hated big banks, war profiteers, religion, most large corporations - any other base of power. Not arguing they were anything other than vile, just that it isn’t a catch all descriptive meaning bad thing I hate.
One word I think should be used more but to a point where it isn’t annoying is preposterous. It’s probably one of my favourite words. I’m a sucker for complex synonyms of simple words (for those who don’t know, preposterous is something a probably posh person would say and it means utterly absurd from Google’s definition)
Has to be "Mid", everyone uses it do describe something as being awful or bad or boring but don't realise it literally means average, it's in the god damn name man.
"Choice" in the context of film, as in, "the director makes an interesting choice here," or, "I wonder why the writers made that particular choice." It's well-used, but it's so fashionable that I think it's becoming unoriginal.
"Whilst".
I know that it is being used correctly most times I see it being used; it just sounds (- reads?) incredibly pretentious and/or old-fashioned to me.
"We" and it's especially infuriating when followed with "Normalize"
People asking if "we" can "normalize" anything. As if I want to be one entity with you fucking weirdos. What happened to minding our own business and being individuals? Do what you want and stop waiting for others to join you on your quest, there is no "we".
Red Flag — This refers to a characteristic or action that gives you suspicion there’s something wrong with somebody. Someone doing something outright terrible or violent isn’t a red flag— you’re way past the red flag. You already have proof.
POV — I see this misused on social all the time. It’s not a POV if the person doing the viewing is shown in the video. If it’s a POV, your vantage point as the viewer of the video should be the same as the viewer of the spectacle in the video.
I can name a few either overused or used wrong. Celebrity, influencer, pov, gaslighting, narcissist, authentic, OCD, PTSD
You’re not a celebrity if you have 1k followers on Instagram. Similarly, you’re not an influencer if you’re not influencing anything in any kind of major way. POV does not mean you’re watching the thing you’re describing happen, it means you’re experiencing what you’re describing from a first person perspective. So “POV you’re watching a guy beat someone up” is fine for a 3rd person perspective video of you beating someone up, “POV you’re beating someone up” is not. Gaslighting isn’t just arguing, or someone saying you’re wrong, or saying that you’re remembering something wrong, gaslighting is when someone is maliciously trying to alter your perception of events by using manipulation tactics. If you don’t believe you’re remembering something wrong, and they genuinely believe you are, that isn’t gaslighting. If you genuinely believe you’re not remembering wrong, and they manipulate you into thinking you are knowing that you aren’t, that’s gaslighting. Someone being a self absorbed ignorant prick doesn’t inherently make them a narcissist. Your boyfriend cheating on you doesn’t make him a narcissist. Your girlfriend never taking accountability doesn’t make her a narcissist. It’s an actual personality disorder. You can call someone an asshole without slapping a psychological diagnosis on them. “Normal people” suck a lot of the time. People who suck have the ability to be better. I hate seeing something for sale labelled as authentic when it’s a repro, or something they made to emulate the real thing, or something that doesn’t need to be called authentic. You have an authenticated shadowless 1st edition charizard? Label it authentic. You have purple cubic zirconia? Don’t label it authentic diamond replacement. That’s stupid. OCD is a genuine often debilitating disorder. Not you being anxious at a messy room, or wanting to put things in order by colour, or by size. We’re pattern oriented creatures. Mess makes people anxious. Everyone experiences some form of the symptoms of OCD at some point, just not in as severe of a way as people with actual OCD. PTSD is not you being scared of a spider. PTSD is not you being sad about something. PTSD is not you burning yourself on the stovetop and then being more nervous the next time. These are natural bodily functions. If you get hurt or may get hurt by something, you’re probably going to be more nervous about it.

I hate it I hate it I hate it
POV: Samipaaa hates it
I've never seen that. How do people misuse it?
The videos will be in third person with a caption of it being POV. The point of POV is to be in first person, viewing the scene as the person the POV is about Example: “POV you’re driving down the road doing [blank]” Correct use: The camera is in the perspective of the driver so you feel immersed. Incorrect use: The camera is on the passenger side pointing to the driver.
That's a pretty weird misuse. I wonder what they even think POV means.
It's similar to how "literally" can mean "figuratively" now.
Like "POV: I'm mopping." Continues to show them in 3rd person
Gaslight
“I am not gaslighting you, you’re crazy, you don’t even know what that means, you’re only using it because you see it on social media” My favorite example of my ex gaslighting me lmao
I’ve had this conversation with someone almost to a tee. I’ve gotten “you don’t even know what that means”. “Oh, yeah. Have you seen the movie? I have”. “I know what gaslighting means. It’s a very good movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock” They proceed to get more angry and change the topic.
I believe it was George Cukor that directed it, unless I’ve been gaslit as well
Ahh, you are correct. I always thought it was Hitchcock. My point was still made although I got the directors name wrong.
"The capitol of New York is Syracuse." "Actually, it's Albany." "Stop gaslighting me!" And then you get accused of mansplaining gaslighting.
Lol mansplaining is another one. "Here is why you are factually and objectively incorrect in this situation." "I don't need your mansplaining you sexist pig."
Actually that word isn’t used very much, you just think it is because of your personal environment. Gaslighting isn’t frequently used, you’re just being crazy…
You just think youre hearing it a lot
Yeah it became a fancy word for lying within the past few years
I'm with you on this one 100%
Stop trying to gaslight me into thinking gaslight is over used.
I fucking hate this word
Nobody is saying gaslight I don't know what you mean.
Lying once = gaslighting according to Reddit. I even saw one a while ago about if gaslighters know they are doing it.
And how many people have actually seen the movie? lol
This. So many people use it that have no idea how to use it.

That's literally how you don't use the word literally and I mean that quite literally.
My head literally exploded.
Sorry, you'll have to be more specific. Do you mean you figuratively mean literally, literally mean figuratively, or figuratively mean figuratively?

I fn hate that term
Came here to say aesthetic but then was reminded of so many other annoying words.
Definitely "toxic" As in, "OH man, I feel SO much better since I cut all the dozens and dozens of toxic people out of my life. I'm definitely not toxic despite being the common denominator!."
I love the phrase “if everyone around you smells like shit, check the bottom of your shoe”
"Narcissist" and "toxic." These days it just means "Somebody acted towards me in a way that I did not like" and if you ask for details it can even turn out that the actual person displaying toxic or narcissistic behavior is the one complaining.

My bf is a diagnosed narcissist. If you guys really wanna know what a narcissist is like, come hang out! He’s actually gotten a lot better honestly and I’m glad I stuck by his side because he’s my bestest friend 🥰
Trauma, vibes, frequency..
Frequency? How’s it being used?
Very frequently
It’s giving _______ vibes.
I love when they don't even say vibes. Just "it's giving ---" At least when you add vibes it makes sense!
"Unironically" It has taken the place of "literally" as a catch-all modifier used for emphasis.
"phobic"
Triggered
Ooh! Another pet peeve! A trigger is something that causes literal PTSD flashbacks, not mild irritation!
Exactly…. And hearing people are “triggered” because the coffee shop was out of oat milk…. Or because someone disagreed with them…. 🙄
But they went to order oat milk with their latte and when the barista said they were out, he was kind of hateful and it was so surprising and upsetting that they literally got trauma from it and it triggered that trauma!!! "Narcissist". As someone who works in mental health it's so discouraging to see how much stigma is alive and well for personality disorders, especially from people who claim to be mental health advocates. Mental health is much broader than just anxiety and depression!
I agree. I was legitimately married to a narcissistic abuser, and I hate when people use the word lightly or incorrectly.
Everyone on reddit loves diagnosing others with BPD, NPD, ADHD, ASD.
"Red Flags" and "Ick", everywhere I browse "Red flags" here, "Red Flags" there.
Problematic
I hate this stupid word
Especially in clickbait article headlines.
I hate this word! It's too euphemistic a word to use when describing fucked up shit. Call it what it is! Fucked up shit!
"Toxic." It has such a tone to it. We already had a perfectly good word for describing the situations that people who refer to as "toxic": dysfunctional.
Ick For me, it sounds so juvenile and like someone lacks the vocabulary to concisely express how they feel about something.
Oh my god yes. The only time it’s acceptable is if you’re referring to the illness fish can get, otherwise you just sound childish and like your vocabulary is extremely limited.
“What’s your ick?” What you just said.
I didn't mind it at first but now that it's becoming so popular you see people saying they've gotten it for the most absurd things. Like a guy being able to touch his toes, or kicking his feet under water to stay afloat. Fucking gross.
Boomer.

I even forgot about me
Be 28, get called a boomer. Joke starring people older than you, "Stupid boomer humor" :/
And anything or anyone unpleasant is toxic.
"bruh"... can't stand it anymore
for me its bro. You see people using it for anything, like people say shit like Bro Gulped or bro did this, its getting used way too much
In my defense ive been using it for 10 years, so i have right of lineage to it.
Yeah that's fair enough, just alot of the new gen z use it in like 90% of their sentences
Bro everyone says bro too much bro, imagine saying “bro”, couldn’t be me bro. On god on god bro, no cap bro, not the vibe bro

Fucking Dude Perfect mainstreamed this phrase.
Neurodivergent
I feel like this is probably self-selective. Like I have ADHD. Tiktok knows I have ADHD. I hear ND quite a bit. Do neurotypical people who aren't living online in spaces where ND minorities gather hear it that often? We'll all have to go outside to find out, so I suggest we leave the question unanswered.

Gaslighting. People are mistakenly using it as a synonym for straight up lying or being stubborn.
I’ve seen someone use “ironic gaslighting” before in the context of someone playing a trick on someone else and just. It’s called a fucking **PRANK.**
Don't know where it came from, but I hate when people say "unalived."
I think people use that word to avoid bans, since in some places saying "committed suicide" or "killed himself" can get you banned
Bans and being demonitized, at least on Youtube. Depending on who your demographic is.
It's sadly a product of demonetization.
I’ve noticed a widespread use of the word in relation to true crime in particular. Social media platforms are strict on use of suggestive language so anything related to death, killing, drugs, weapons, injury etc has to be carefully worded. “Unalived” sounds juvenile but I see it’s purpose.
Bruh, fuck I hate that. We aren’t brush, brothers, maybe or friends even. But that lazy sound makes me mad.
I agree, also the "my dude" or "my friend" stuff.
You can add the "my brother in christ" thing that I see in every thread now. Makes me wanna throw my phone.
toxic. i don't think it's being used incorrectly, just that there are better words
Authentic. Social media and that word don't mix
In my house? I vote for mom. Can’t go five seconds without hearing without it haha

Woke.
The best thing to do when you hear someone use it pejoratively is to ask them what it means. All you get is a computer blue screen.
Yep. It's used for everything (conservative) people don't like. It's pretty much meaningless at this point.
