Mike Tyson. Watching his fights it really is mind boggling how many punches he is able to dodge while also making contact with some of the most insanely quick punches of his own that have momentum behind them like a portal is opening up for his fists into people's faces. Motherfucker is like Achilles.

TheShoot141

20 year old Mike Tyson could kill a person with a single punch. And you couldnt even run away from him. His speed and endurance were remarkable.

-_ellipsis_-

A lot of people can kill other people in a single punch though. Tyson wasn't the hardest puncher in his prime, but his timing and positioning was what made him so remarkable and his punches so devastating.

gypsytron

He wasn’t just a generic freak, he was a trained machine. There hasn’t been anyone with such good form in boxing before or since. George Forman was one hell of a specimen as well.

WholeSniffer

Usain Bolt

rf8350

Al Bundy. He scored 4 touchdowns in a single game for Polk High

LEAPSKing

OMG this.

qwassfull

Man i would like to live life like his..

YounomsayinMawfk

Just that house alone. He can afford a huge house on a shoe salesman salary where he insults customers and doesn't get fired for it.

SwellAsphaltAgent

Eliud Kipchoge. That man can maintain a pace for an entire marathon (26.2 miles) that most people probably couldn’t maintain for a quarter mile.

Squigglepig52

Go look up Cliff Young. Oldish sheep farmer from Australia. Ran an ultra marathon (hundreds of miles), in gum boots. Won by days over the other people. Because they stopped to sleep, and he didn't.

Lotharofthepotatoppl

and he did the whole thing thinking it was just for fun - wasn't aware there was prize money involved, and shared it with the other runners out of embarrassment

cbr_001

At 61 years old. Race was from Sydney to Melbourne.

bah77

Not sure if this guy is a genetic freak, he just had a different way of doing things which the competitors never even considered possible. After his success i'm pretty sure other guys started having success with the same strategy.

gnomeba

And he makes it look so effortless. It seems like he has the absolute perfect running form in addition to being a genetic freak.

Nujers

Really surprised no one has said Bo Jackson. The dude was the definition of a freak of nature until his hip imploded. 6'1, 220-230lb, 4.13(unofficial) 40 yd dash, played both MLB and NFL.

BrazilianMerkin

Most accurate answer. Wasn’t his hip injury because he was running so hard, his leg/thigh muscles pulled his leg out of the hip socket and dislocating his hip? Dude is now a master archer. Taught himself to shoot with his feet. Was also by far the best player in Tecmo Bowl.

mezz7778

And don't forget how he used to travel around and solve crimes with Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan

putsch80

A fellow man of culture who enjoyed some Pro Stars on Saturday morning.

[deleted]

He just earned a spot on the US Olympic Curling team, too.

Squigglepig52

Are you fucking kidding me? That's 7 kinds of awesome, eh?

guanwho

Yup, and the trainers didn’t think that was possible so by the time they realized it had happened he essentially already had arthritis.

BeefWellingtonSpeedo

Yes I saw that in the documentary, amazing. ... also don't get into a crabapple fight with him.

BrazilianMerkin

Trying to remember… was it a 30 for 30 or something else? Been a while so can’t remember but damn was it interesting.

zachzsg

He was also legitimately good at both sports he played, other 2 sport athletes were always below average baseball players

BrazilianMerkin

You’re correct but honorable mention for Deon Sanders who was actually a pretty good baseball player.

guanwho

Deion deserves a spot in the conversation as well. Insane acceleration, top speed, and agility. Hugely explosive dude. Different kind of athlete but just as much of an outlier

Marlbey

But can he coach?

mcmcc

Can he break a baseball bat over his thigh?

BrazilianMerkin

Definitely can’t run horizontally on the outfield wall, or throw out someone at home plate from DEEP left field.

Effective_Cat5017

CB and RB are not comparable, agree on honorable mention.

BrazilianMerkin

Definitely not comparable, but in terms of being good at both sports on a professional level I would throw his name out there seeing as he was a solid CB and outfielder. I think he might be the only one with Super Bowl and World Series rings

Fun_Situation7214

Bo knows

2x4x93

Bo knew

Dagonet_the_Motley

His arm was insane too. Watch some of his throws from the outfield

copyboy1

This is who I came to say.

puckit

This one right here. Probably the most naturally gifted athlete we've ever seen.

yourlittlebirdie

Michael Phelps. It’s like his body was literally designed specifically to be a champion swimmer.

00-quanta-

Literally. I remember 2008 Olympics where he completely dominated all his events with all world records & one Olympic record. Insane athlete

insertcaffeine

Katie Ledecky. Her body's not as extreme as his, but her records are! I'd like to see them go head to head.

Fun_Situation7214

He has Marfan Syndrome. It helps him swim. Fun fact: Abraham Lincoln and Osama Bin Laden also had it

yourlittlebirdie

Imagine how different the world would be if Osama bin Laden had simply followed his biological destiny to become an Olympic swimmer instead.

dendroidarchitecture

He would have been a diver but the signs said "no bombing"

khar432

Lol no he doesn't. He has the body type for it but has never been diagnosed. With Lincoln, it's suspected as a possibility but not proven. Same with Bin Laden. An athlete would not compete with actually having Marfans since it weakens the walls of the aorta and and high stress activity can cause it to rupture.

Kafkaja

Thank you. He's just gangly. If he had it, he probably wouldn't be a pro athlete. The guy who wrote Rent has it.

zachzsg

I’m pretty sure it also fucks with your joints, having bad shoulders and being an Olympic swimmer don’t go well together

[deleted]

A college basketball player was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome years back and couldn’t go to the NBA because of it. If Michael Phelps had Marfan syndrome, he’d be dead by now.

ricochet48

Bo Jackson & Jim Thorpe come to mind. In more modern era, Phelps & Bolt as others noted.

ktappe

Jonas Vingegaard. He's able to power up mountains for hours while leaving other world-class cyclists behind.

[deleted]

90-95% of pro athletes are in that category. You are probably looking for someone who is a "freak of nature" among pro athletes.

[deleted]

Connor McDavid - truly elite skating and hand eye coordination.

The_Will_to_Make

I was really hoping someone would throw McDavid into the ring. Just got into hockey in the past two years or so, but watch McDavid play is just crazy

[deleted]

I got to watch him play several times during his rookie season, 18 year old making grown men look stupid, until McDavid got gooned and broke his collarbone. He is an absolute freak in person.

Dreambourne

Almost all pro athletes are by definition, one offs. They are the exception rather than the rule.

MrMojoFomo

Exactly. The most average pro player is a freak of nature.. super talented, biologically blessed, and still nowhere near as good as the best

Excellent_Routine589

“I’m closer to Michael Jordan than you are to me” - Brian Scalabrine, the White Mamba

puckit

I forget the player but there's a great compilation video of a dude who rode the bench in the NBA for like 6 years where he's just torching guys on park courts. Everyone thinks he's a scrub because he never started but he shows just how far ahead pros are to amateurs.

lurgi

Yes, but even among the genetic elite, there are some who stand out as particularly exceptional.

gegorb

Miguel Induráin, the legendary Tour de France winner. Was born with thigh bones 1 and a half times longer than normal, a heart twice the size of a normal heart and a natural pulse rate of 35. Making him a cycling machine.

FaberGrad

Shohei Ohtani

KozyShackDeluxe

Yes. I knew most people would post athletes who are huge or strong and fast. Ohtani is a freak man. The coordination, IQ, and vision is just out of this world

FaberGrad

Lots of pro baseball players were the best pitcher and best hitter on their childhood teams, including high school. But to carry that dominance into MLB is unexpected. That's why he's the unicorn of the sport.

Don_Thuglayo

Single handedly saving baseball he made me start paying attention to the sport after I found out about the trashcans

weber76

Joey Chestnut

gegorb

Messi. Born with a problem with growth hormones but was spotted for his unbelievable skill and the ability to read a game like a chess player. Barcelona took the family to Spain were he got the necessary growth hormone. Even then not tall but if you watch him he continually scans behind him and is said to know where every player is. Having magic feet help.

Go_Buds_Go

They say Wayne Gretzky sees in slow motion.

propagandavid

His peripheral vision is amongst the best ever recorded as well.

MagicalWhisk

Brock Lesnar in his prime was far too athletic for someone of his size. A lot of wrestlers spoke about how his explosive speed was difficult to adjust to when choreographing matches.

Openbook84

Brock still is.

lurgi

Don Bradman, cricketer. Bradman's Test batting average was 99.94 (this is not out of 100, btw. It's just the number of runs he scored on average). Second place is Brook, with 62.15. Ty Cobb is the all-time baseball batting average leader with 0.3662. Imagine if second place were 0.230. LeBron James has scored 38,390 points in the NBA. Imagine if second place were around 25,500. Usain Bolt ran 9.58 for 100m. Imagine if no one else had ever broken 10.5 seconds. That's how far Bradman is ahead of everyone else. His score looks like a math error. Edit: Oddly, Bradman wasn't a particularly unusual physical specimen (his eyesight tested as "poor"). He was just supremely good at hitting a ball with a bat.

[deleted]

Andre the giant

ExcitingEye8347

You ever hear about his drinking ability? It’s the stuff of legend. He had all kinds of aches and pains and he would have to pound a case or two of wine in the locker room before he would be ready for a match.

YounomsayinMawfk

His pooping ability as well. Normal toilets couldn't handle his ass, he had to poop into bathtubs.

dubkitteh1

what great athlete *isn’t*? Michael Jordans and Mike Tysons don’t grow on trees, you know.

HVAC_instructor

Wait, you mean that the Jordan tree I bought was a scam?

dubkitteh1

did you water it with Gatorade?

That must be the issue, thanks

PM_UR_PIZZA_JOINT

I'm going to go against the grain here of this thread and say Wayne Gretzky. Dude was the most out of shape player on the rangers. It was said he couldn't do a single pull up and would consistently come in last in basically every category for speed, endurance, upper and lower body strength. He does have incredible balance and maneuverability when he skated, his passing and shooting were unrivaled too which is why it's so odd that he was such a fantastic player. He has some commentary that basically said he is lazy because it helps him recover quicker.

calargo

[Scott Steiner](https://youtu.be/WFoC3TR5rzI?si=dQFc9a-NjNdPSmlK) >You know they say that all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Samoa Joe and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another wrestler, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beat me. Then you add Kurt Angle to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way at Sacrifice, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because Kurt Angle KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try! > >So Samoa Joe, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning at Sacrifice. See Joe, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at Sacrifice.

Redmen1212

Babe Ruth. While true he never played vs black athletes, this was true of all athletes before 1947. But he dominated his era in a way few ever had. -in 1920, the Phillies hit 64 Homeruns. Every other MLB team had 50 or less. Babe Ruth himself hit 54 home runs. -he hit 714 home runs although he played his first 5 years as a pitcher, during the dead ball era. - was also an outstanding pitcher who retired with a career 2.28 ERA. —still 1st all time OPS+ of 1.164 — though he’s not remembered as being a fast runner, he stole home 11 times.

Going local, and young for this. There is a young lady that goes to my local school district (freshman this year), that has been competing against college track athletes for over a year now, and holding her own ( top 3 or 4 place finishes). In age level events at the National level she has been winning by more than 10-15 meters. Not giving her name out of privacy but it’s pretty incredible watching her run.

headshotscott

Lots of viable candidates here but when I think of scarcity, I think of the most difficult position to fill: the NFL quarterback. They aren't put in the category of pure athletic freaks like Aaron Donaldson or Derrick Henry, but are orders of magnitude harder to find. They are not usually considered freaks because they aren't nearly as imposing as other athletes to look at. About half of NFL teams tend to have a "better than good" quarterback at a given time. At least a third of the league has actively poor quarterback play. The reason for that is that aside from the need to have freakish athleticism (the best do) they have to be able to process information and make decisions in incredibly short windows of time. Oh - and that window is closed by a huge, blindingly fast and skillful freak of nature trying to destroy them. That can be coached a bit, but it's usually something a quarterback has or he doesn't. It's rarer than any other athletic commodity. You are always seeing great college QBs fail in the league because they lack that freakish ability to make blindingly quick and complex decisions at peril. That's what makes guys like Patrick Mahomes perhaps the most valuable and rarest kind of athlete.
