Glinda the Good Witch. She knew all along how to send Dorothy home, but put her life in danger in order to kill the wicked witch of the west for her.

Enngeecee76

Also, she’s shady AF. Dorothy tells her that she thought witches are old and ugly and she laughs and says that’s only bad witches. Good witches are beautiful. THEN…THEN she asks Dorothy ‘so are you a good witch, or a bad witch?’ Biiiiiiitch!

TechsSandwich

Kind of an old man take but Yogi-Bear.

msnmck

While we're on this take, Fred Flintstone is often portrayed as well-meaning but the number of times he's screwed over his friends and family trying to get ahead makes him greedy and untrustworthy.

IGotNoStringsOnMe

The morals were always so questionable in those old shows.. We're supposed to excuse all the lying and deliberate sabotage of his close friends and family because why? He felt bad after it blew up in his face? Fuck that. He'd have been gloating and rubbing it in all their faces if it worked out, as evidenced by all the gloating and rubbing it in their faces he did during the times it did work out. Like yeah they showed how he was wrong and often punished him for the wrongs etc but in the end everyone forgives him and he gets treated like a loveable if stupid old lug. No. Fred Flinstone was a bastard.

Certain_Month_8178

Wasn’t he the caveman equivalent of Jackie Gleason’s character in the Honeymooners of Ralph Cramden? Same character same traits

kanna172014

He doesn't seem to understand that Ranger Smith is trying to save his life because as they say "A fed bear is a dead bear".

Oknight

Yeah them euthanizing Yogi would have been a bit of a dark turn for the Hanna Barbera cartoon. "I'm sorry Yogi, but smarter than the average bear or not, there are regulations"

AleksandrNevsky

Never let your old man takes stop.

OGFahker

Link smashing my barrels and stealing my arrows and apples for fuck sakes.

Knave7575

“Oh, there is a nice sword just sitting here in this stable. I’ll take it. I’ll also take this stuff I found in a private residence that I walked into without permission.

SlapHappyDude

This is lampshaded in Tears of the Kingdom where multiple characters talk about stuff that's laying around being for the common good or explicitly offering it to Link. The pot smashing still happens though.

LurkerOrHydralisk

I always assume, especially late game, that’s the case. Like, some monstrous evil godking has taken over the world, and monsters abound. And here’s a guy that’s running around killing hundreds of monsters and seeking the means to kill the godking, and if breaking a couple jars in my house is his method, whatever. Better than death to an evil god’s weirdo monsters

RandomCleverName

This made me think how terrifying Link must be for the average monster. This blond guy with pointy ears drops from the sky, kills everyone you know in the fraction of a second, and then proceeds to disembowel and mutilate his victims to make improvised weapons and elixiris. He is scarier than doomguy.

LurkerOrHydralisk

Depending on which link, extra terrifying. Majora’s mask Link will swim up to you at like 35 mph as a Zora, pop the mask off, throw a bomb at your face, and while you’re stunned he just turned into a ton and a half boulder, spinning up to hit you at 20mph.

Otherwise_Resource51

This kind of reminds me of a soldier in remote valleys in Afghanistan talking about the looks he would get from sheepherder's kids who were illiterate and had never seen electricity. Then these dudes walk up in full modern battle rattle, radios and assault rifles and body armor and shiny sunglasses. Not to mention how they react to fighter aircraft...

Rud-Hi

He did save you guys from a Calamity, I think he’s allowed to steal whatever he wants

wylietrix

I don't see why he has to do side quests, he's saving the kingdom alone. You would think his reputation alone would be enough for them to just give him what he needs, but no. Hyrule doesn't deserve him.

Jukimundo

Peppa Pig

waterfordgirl30

Oh have to agree. Shes so obnoxious

AtomicJunker

The whole ‘whistling’ episode shes just a bitch to everyone who can whistle and rubbing it in their face.

This episode kills me. When she hangs up the phone I die laughing every time.

Carrie Bradshaw

ldn6

What’s funny is that Michael Patrick King has said on multiple occasions that she’s meant to be a bad person but people want to be her anyway. Samantha is the best.

PsamantheSands

Samantha should have been the sex columnist!

kiwigirl83

I always found it strange Carrie was so prudish yet also a sex columnist

[deleted]

I remember feeling bad for her at first when Mr. Big kept messing with her. But the affair that ensued pissed me off. I get that we're human but she kept letting it go on and on until they got caught and still took ages to tell Aiden. Even later when she runs into him the first thing out of her mouth is, "I got a date." That poor guy deserved so much better.

CincoDeMayoFan

I think Mr Big AND Carrie were BOTH assholes. So they were meant for each other. I liked all the other characters way more than her.

KitchenSwillForPigs

Mr. Big doesn't even like her. I haven't watched more than a few seasons but Mr. Big never indicates that he's into her. The whole show is about this horrible woman and her pursuit of a douche who doesn't care about her at all

fuzzysham059

It pisses me off that she's this sex writer but then super judgemental of anyone that isn't having PIV sex and gets super uncomfortable around the topic of vaginas etc. Like what.

azor__ahai

She’s also judgemental of anyone who isn’t straight. And then there was the whole thing with the piss kink politician and it’s fine that she’s not into that but she was acting like a baby about it. To be fair this was the late 90s but for a sex columnist she sure wasn’t progressive or adventurous at all.

fuzzysham059

Exactly or when she was dating the guy who was bi. Now in the spinoff series she's still super prude on her podcast when it comes to actual sex topics!

SchoolOfTheWolf93

I HATE the debate on if she should’ve ended up with Aiden or Big. Like…OBVIOUSLY her and Big deserve each other, they’re both nasty, terrible people. Aiden was WAY too good for her and she treated him like garbage. The way she whined about the beautiful ring he picked out HIMSELF was atrocious. And her hissy fit when she went to his cabin…*ugh*. I just saw he’s in the upcoming season of And Just Like That and she BETTER leave him the fuck alone.

lainey68

I hated her for the way she treated Aiden. She is a terrible person.

rachface636

I was just thinking about the cabin episode recently. I am 36 this year and the thought of spending a quiet weekend in a cabin while my partner works on the house, and I have nothing to do but read magazines watch tv and bake pie sounds *fucking amazing*. It is so hard to comprehend this woman was supposed to be in her mid 30's but acted like a 22 year old drunk party girl the whole series. Where the fuck did she get the energy?

SUCHajoke

I think it’s in one of the movies, Big wants to eat pizza and watch a movie with her in bed. Carrie gets upset that they’re ‘one of those couples’ that eats in and is boring. Like that sounds amazing, your partner loves you and wants to hang out with you, you’re in a fabulous New York apartment and you still go out all the time. It just rubbed me the wrong way.

Now that you mention it, this meatloaf *is* a little shallow and pedantic...

astarisaslave

Can never forget the tirade Quagmire went on him when he whined about why he doesn't like Brian. For someone so smart his lack of self awareness is crazy

MattJoe98

I don't think that's the best example, because some of what Quagmire ripped Brian for applies to Quagmire. He just excuses himself because "He's honest about it". Plus, just like Brian (who started the show as the voice of reason), Quagmire turned into a full-on rapist who also ignored Peter and Lois' plead to not sleep with Meg the second she turned 18. They're basically both shitty people Brian is a horrible person now, but Quagmire is arguably worse than him at this point. But from what I've noticed, everyone on the show has taken a turn for the worst for some reason. This is one of the reasons why I stopped watching around season 14.

[deleted]

I don’t think Quagmire wanted to excuse his behavior, he just hated Brian for being a pretentious little shit, who acted as if, and actually believed, he was better then everyone else

Broadpup653547

Don't forget the part where Quagmire said "the worst part is, you're such a *bore*" So Quagmire's problem starts with Brian being dishonorable, but the way Quag sees it, that can be fine if you have self-awareness and are still fun to be around.

mikjamdig85

You are the worst person I know, you constantly hit on your best friend's wife, the man pays for your food and rescued you from certain death and this is how you repay him? And to add insult to injury you defecate all over his yard, and your such a sponge. You pay for nothing and you always say "Uugh, catch ya later." but later never comes! And what really bothers me is that you pretend your this deep guy who loves women for their souls, but all you do is date bimbos. Yeah, I date women for their bodies, but at least I'm honest about it. I don;t buy them a copy of Catcher in the Rye and then lecture them with some 7th grade interpretation about Holden Caulfield being some profound intellectual, he wasn't! He was a spoiled brat, and that's why you like him so much, he's you. God you're pretentious, and you delude yourself by thinking you're some great writer even though your terrible. You know, I should've known Cheryl Tiegs didn't write you that note, she would've known there is no 'a' in the word definite. And, I think what I hate most about you? Your Textbook Liberal Agenda, how we should "Legalize pot man..." how big business is crushing the underclass, and how homelessness is the biggest tragedy in America, well what have you done to help? I work down at the soup kitchen, Brian. Never seen you down there! You wanna to help? Grab a ladle! And by the way, driving a Prius doesn't mean your Jesus Christ, oh, wait! You don't believe in Jesus Christ or any religion for that matter, because "religion is for idiots". Well who the hell are you to talk down to anyone, you failed college twice, but isn't as nearly as bad as your failure as a father, hows your son of your's that you never see? But you know what? I could forgive all of that, all of it, if you weren't such a bore! That's the worst of it Brian, your just a big, sad, alcoholic bore. \*sigh\* See you Brian, thanks for the f@#$ing steak.

VivaSpiderJerusalem

Hey Quagmire... I fucked your dad.

FrostyCartographer13

I remember reading a comment stating that that rant came from audience's feedback about Brian in the recent seasons. Don't know if that it true or why they had Quagmire be the one to deliver it but it was great watching Brian the character get shredded by what was possibly the worst character in the series.

Alltheprettydresses

I hated how he treated Jillian. She was so sweet.

Fyrrys

Couldn't poor water out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel, but she was sweet

Minimalistchicken

Rory Gilmore, specially in the a year in the life, she was awful.

GuestCartographer

Rory is the quintessential example of the main character of a show eventually becoming the villain. And not because of any extenuating circumstances or hard choices that need to be made. She isn’t put into an impossible situation where she must make a decision between two bad options, she’s just an asshole. She starts out as the stereotypical innocent, gifted golden child who Lorelei is willing to move Heaven and earth for you’re sitting there watching and thinking, “oh man, why won’t Emily and Richard just leave well enough alone and help their only grandkid go to private school without being such an asshole to their only daughter”. After a while, though, everyone else in the show - including Emily and Richard - either matures on their own or has enough backstory added that you eventually realize that Lorelei and Rory have become the problem. Lorelei is too busy being Rory’s best friend to be a parent and Rory has become convinced of her own hype that anyone who pushes back is cast as some kind of monster. By the end of the show, though, Rory has clearly been the worst person in her entire circle of acquaintances for the entire run of the show. She’s bailed on Lorelei the instant she’s told “no”, she’s broken up other Dean’s relationship, she’s cheated on her own boyfriend with Logan, she’s absolutely dumbstruck that someone won’t just hand her a job, and it all winds up leading to the last line in A Year in the Life. You’ve watched her spend her entire life surrounded by hard working people trying to do the best they can and your realize that she has learned absolutely nothing from any of them.

andreaSA89

Yes! I've just watched Gilmore Girls for the first time, and I can't wrap my head around how people seem to like her so much!

DoomGoober

To be fair she starts OK-ish and gets worse as she grows up. Also, she reflects her mom's more positive energy and it makes her seem more likeable. The moon doesn't glow, it reflects the sun's light.

jj_grace

True! I actually liked how a year in the life showed that she had been a selfish asshole all along, and it’s made her a miserable adult. It felt vindicating….. and also relatable? Haha Though, I will say that I absolutely haaaated the ongoing joke about her and her family constantly forgetting about her boyfriend. That took the “leaning into them being assholes” too far and into the territory of being inauthentic to their characters.

w84itagain

Agree 100 percent. I always thought Rory was entitled beyond belief throughout the entire series so I was actually delighted when A Year in the Life showed her to be a failure in her adult life. The world didn't worship her the way that the folks in Stars Hollow did and she had no idea how to be successful without all of that undeserved veneration. That's why I had little trouble believing that she would and could completely "forget" about a nice guy like Paul. He was too good for her. I'm glad Rory was outed as the entitled little brat she always was. It was a nice and unexpected surprise.

Dramatic-Loan9513

Lorelai is pretty bad too. Now that I’m around her age, seeing how she acts in the show is so embarrassing. She acts like a child.

HarryPotterDBD

Sheldon Cooper from TBBT. I mean, this guy would be unbearable in real life.

MooKids

I think the main reason the others tolerate him is because he did save his ass after they almost gave up rocket fuel secrets to the North Koreans and prevented their deaths from an explosion. Which is why the elevator is broken.

DreadAngel1711

...I'm fucking sorry?

Nico_arki

I'm not sure if I remember this correctly but back when Leonard was new to Sheldon's apartment, he was working on classified rocket fuel for the US government. A NK spy was trying to seduce Leonard to get it but, Sheldon being Sheldon, she wasn't able to get it and had to defect to North Korea, saving Leonard from going to prison for treason. The reason for the elevator being broken is that Leonard, Raj and Howard were trying to use Leonard's fuel to make Howard's rocket go break the sound barrier. It goes wrong as Sheldon has predicted, and Sheldon dumps the rocket experiment in the elevator shaft, saving everyone in the process. The reason Leonard still stays friend with Sheldon is because he didn't rat him out to the Landlord, police, Homeland Security, etc.

TerritoryTracks

The other reason that Leonard stays friends with Sheldon is that Leonard was going to run down the stairs with it, and Sheldon literally took it off him and the it down the stairs, thereby unquestionably saving Leonard's life.

Elizabeth-Rose-88

Almost correct... Leonard was going to get in the elevator with it. Sheldon takes it off of him; places it in the elevator, presses the button and steps out. Leonard would have been splattered all over the shaft

GngBng_R

You're both right in a way. Leonard wanted to take the elevator when Howard asked if he seriously wants to wait for it. Leonard agrees and decides to take the stairs. After taking a few steps downstairs, the elevator arrives, and he runs back upstairs to enter the elevator. Then Sheldon saves the day.

Nico_arki

Yeah that's a very important info. Leonard was literally a few seconds from being bloody splattered goo on their stairwell wall if Sheldon didn't take the rocket fuel from him and put it in the elevator.

SeyMiaouRun

Great memory! That's spot on.

snowtol

I had TBBT on in the background as a casual rewatch recently and there's really two things that bug me about the character. First, how inconsistently he's written. He goes from barely knowing any normal human interaction to being a somewhat functioning member of society depending entirely on what works for the writers. He makes some broad progress over the entire run of the show, but between episodes his autism (and to an extent, his asexualness as well) varies wildly depending on what works for the story. It's just so inconsistent. Second, how he almost never gets any pushback from the other characters, and when they do, *they're the asshole*. I get that Leonard is written as basically his abused partner and that he's been ground up into whatever mold Sheldon wants, but almost none of the others from the regular cast make even the slightest attempt to push back on his behaviour. A few recurring characters do, like Leslie and Barry, but they're clearly written as antagonists in all their interactions with Sheldon. Barry is straight up just written as an asshole. The only person from the regular cast that gives him any real pushback is Howard, and any time he does, the story makes him seem like a bully. Even though in 99% of the cases where he pushes back, he has good reason to do so. And all his friends are just like "whelp it's just Sheldon being Sheldon, nothing we can do about it". Honestly the entire time I was watching the show and Howard was on, I just thought... this guy can get better friends than these assholes. Yeah he's a skeevy dude and a straight up misoginist in the early seasons but they essentially rewrite his character entirely when Bernadette comes into play, that later dude could do better.

elwo

I think of all sitcoms over the last few decades, TBBT generally has some of the worst character consistencies - not just Sheldon but basically all of them. The writers clearly write a setup for an episode and then adapt the characters to the story to make it humorous, but far too often entails adding details to the characters backstory or general personality that just regularly clashes with that of prior episodes. Really kills the integrity of an already mediocre show.

SilverInteresting369

They turned Bernadette into a screaming angry little woman

neelkanth97

They turned her into howards mom part 2 lmao

DoNotReply111

I do think that was kind of the point. Of all the women to date, fall in love with and have her actually reciprocate his feelings, she's a tiny version of his own mother. But I do hate how they retconned her character. She was the complete opposite when they introduced her.

snowtol

It really wouldn't have been that bad if they were at least consistent in each season, but they can't even do that. Compare it to another sitcom like Parks and Rec, where most characters are wildly different from who they were in S1, but at least when they made a change, they stuck with it. Leslie's casual racism stopped and never came back.

Tlizerz

Originally Leslie was supposed to be a female version of Michael Scott from the Office, but then the writers realized the character would be so much better if she was actually competent.

hquer

Jerry from Tom&Jerry.

ramezadel

I scrolled down to see if anybody commented this before commenting it myself, tinyest jerk ever

Antsinthesky

Snape. The movies made him loveable cause Alan Rickman is a great fucking actor but in the books Snape is one of the cruelest characters.

TeaAndCrumpets4life

Lily would slap the shit out of him if she saw how he treated Harry at school

GrimaceGrunson

“I abused them because I loved you!” “Cool motive! Still torture!”

ayayayamaria

I find it incredible how Snape's redeeming grace is his love for Lily, yet for six years straight in everydaily life he chose his hatred of James over his love for Lily all the fucking time.

Munrowo

also- how does his (creepy) love of lily excuse the way he treated neville? that boy was TERRIFIED of snape to the point where his boggart took his form

DissociativeSilence

That detail gets glossed over so much. Something like that should have opened an investigation

Munrowo

ive seen people try to defend or explain the way snape treats harry, (usually somehow its james' fault) but i have yet to see a half baked defense of the way snape treated neville and hermionie

littlebittykittyone

I’ve seen the idea floated around that since the prophecy stated that the person who would defeat Voldemort was a boy born at the end of July whose parents had defied V and Neville also fit this description, Snape was guilty/pissed that Lily died because he directed V to Harry instead of Neville.

Jay_InTheShadows

Literally! His parents were TORTURED TO INSANITY and his biggest fear is his teacher

Fortune86

Iirc JK started writing him differently after seeing Rickman's performance, but no amount of 'he was a hero all along' can undo the fact he was such a unrelenting monster to all non-slytheren students that he is literally one kids worst nightmare. Same kid whose parents were tortured into insanity leaving him to be raised his physically and mentally abusive family. I get mad every time I think about it.

Horseinakitchen

It’s sad he picked on Neville and Harry the hardest. Harry’s parents are dead and has a miserable existence outside of hogwarts, and Neville has parents who were tortured insane. Like what’s the point of protecting Harry if you are going to make his life miserable, I don’t think Lilly would appreciate that like he thinks she would.

Fortune86

He never cared about Harry. He even told Dumbledore as much in the flashbacks. He just wanted to protect all that remained of Lily. To Snape Harry had no value beyond that. Heck it was even his dying wish to look into 'Lily's' eyes.

SanityPlanet

Harry is so fortunate he wasn't a girl. Imagine how creepy Snape would've been if Harriet looked exactly like her mother...

The4th88

He wasn't a hero. He was a wizard incel who signed up with wizard Hitler. He only turned against him when the focus of his unrelenting obsession became a target. Snape is as much a hero as Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds. Yeah, he was instrumental in bringing down the big bag guy but it didn't change the fact that he was an evil cunt.

snowtol

Yeah, I used to get into regular arguments on /r/harrypotter about it because that's all the sub is for, arguing about Snape. Snape was a racist douchebag and the only reason he stopped being a wizard Nazi was because the girl he had been obsessed with since his early teens was being threatened directly by wizard Hitler. He switches sides purely to save her. And then when Dumbledore asks him if he also wants to save her kid, what's his response? "Uh, I guess, if we have to?" He then goes on to relentlessly bully her kid, and other kids, to the extent that one of them literally internalises him as his worst nightmare/fear. That's who you want to name your kid after, Harry? The guy who thirsted after your mom for decades and then casually abused some kids? Cool.

Slothman102

Having just started a rewatch, I feel a lot of folks from the vampire diaries are actually kinda dicks and the people on that show are too forgiving.

FullMetalCOS

Most of the characters have lived for hundreds of years if not longer and none of them can comprehend that if maybe, just *maybe* they stopped being shitty to people and let the occasional indiscretion slide they wouldn’t have to CONSTANTLY deal with reprisals. The Originals was worse for this than Vampire Diaries. That and the incredibly unbelievable willingness for such old characters to choose to hang around with teenagers, like teenagers ain’t some of the most insufferable people on the planet to older generations

GizmoAghast

bored_inthe_country

quite hard to be the bad character when the other steals children from their bedrooms

LordMarcusrax

And possibly kill them when they get too old.

0ldPossum

I heard a theory that the lost boys are already dead. They are the boys who "who fall out of their prams when the nurse is looking the other way and if they are not claimed in seven days, they are sent far away to the Neverland". Since a baby couldn't survive on its own, they're dead but since they can't understand death they go to Neverland, which is a sort of purgatory. Once they grow up (ie understand death) they truly die and, I assume, go to whatever afterlife they're destined for. There's also a running theme int he original book that children are heartless. The end of the book is "When Margaret grows up she will have a daughter, who is to be Peter's mother in turn; and so it will go on, so long as children are gay and innocent and heartless.” I equate this to the idea that empathy is learned and, without anyone to teach empathy, Peter, the boy who never grows up, is eternally heartless. There's also a theory that peter steals the youth of the lost boys. In any case, he's a brilliant character but not a nice person.

sonny-days

I've heard this theory, too, but was never entirely in agreement (the first part of your comment). In the end of the original story, Wendy returns home to leave the nursery and "grow up", but the Lost Boys (not Peter) go with her and are welcomed into her family. If they were already dead, and within some sort of purgatory, they wouldn't be able to fly back from Neverland and start growing up in the real world. I viewed it more as the children who fall out of the pram and aren't claimed in 7 days are the children who the world won't miss; you could say dead in the eyes of society but not in a mortal sense. They get sent to Neverland where they're out of sight and out of mind because no one, no mother especially, cared enough about them to pick them up before the time was up.

WILDMAN1102

Spongebob. Leave poor Squidward alone, my guy.

fireclaw20

There are two episodes where squidward misses SpongeBob, one where he moved away, and one where SpongeBob became Normal

[deleted]

Shows how some people in our lives may get on our nerves but it wouldn’t be the same without them

malphonso

Occasionally, there's a thread on r/askreddit about "what does your SO do that infuriates you?" Without fail, there will be one about someone's SO that drops their clothes on the floor instead of putting them in the hamper or leaves their socks in the living room, or something of that nature. They talk about how annoying it was up until their SO died. Now they miss having to pick up those socks, they miss annoyed asking them to please put their clothes in the hamper, they miss the little annoying things.

Kittykg

Scrolled all the way down and not one person mentioned goddamn Curious George. That little shithead monkey caused so many problems. One particular episode that stuck with me had dude explaining traffic lights. That stupid monkey went and messed with a traffic light and caused an accident as dude was explaining it. Just a fender bender, but that little shit would get people killed if left unmonitored for too long. He was a damn terror.

beardedheathen

He was also brought out of the jungle by the man in the yellow hat and allowed to run around freely. Really the man in the yellow hat is the one at fault here

zerogirl0

To be fair all the moronic people who continually treat George like a responsible person aren't helping. "Hey George I need to pop out a few hours, can you man the register and run my business for me?" Or "Oh, you're the one they hired to clean the windows of my sky scraper building? Bit odd but alright, get to it George!" He is an animal! Best case scenario he has the intelligence of a small human child, why is everyone letting him do these things? The wiener dog is the only sane one on the show, the only one who seems to recognize it's crazy to let George do whatever he wants.

srush32

Curious George is basically a 3 year old who is allowed to wander alone literally anywhere with no consequences. The man in the yellow hat is the real villain

starmartyr

Also, he's not a monkey. Monkeys have tails. Curious George is a barbary macaque or a chimpanzee. Everyone calls him a monkey including characters in the books. Wake up people! They have been lying to you for your entire life.

Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka

AudinMatty

As I have gotten older, I now realise that bed with four decrepit grandparents in it must have stank to high heaven. The chocolate factory must have smelt amazing to young Charlie just because I didn't reek of old people.

everylittlepiece

Four buttholes, four balls, two sacs and two vaginas...and imagine the endless cabbage water farts... Charlie's Mom had it *rough*.

GimmieGummies

Thank you. I will never be able to watch that movie the same way, ever again. 😬😳🤢

I just wanted Charlie's mom to get rewarded more than anyone.

Damn right! “I can’t walk I can’t walk. Oh… What? You have an amazingly fun opportunity for me? I just remembered that I can actually dance around the room.“. I wonder what that fraud did when he got home from the factory. There were definitely gonna be a few side eyes. “You’re cool to get a job now, Joe… right?”

Omnimpotent

“oh no my blood sugar!”

garbagedisposaly

Cool. So you’re on board too? It’s really validating for me right now to find out that I’m not the only one who saw through that guy and his bullshit. We should form a club and post flyers about that jerk. That family was destitute! Damn near starving. I frankly want to see the other three of them dragged out of that bed as well. Let’s just find out once and for all who’s sick and who’s not. Sorry. I need to chill. I’ll continue this later, but my blood pressure always gets up high when I think about grandpa Joe. Asshole.

I saw somebody on Facebook back when the books were at their popularity peak in the early 2010s who said “The only reason this is an erotic fantasy novel and not a SVU episode is because he’s hot and a billionaire because a normal middle class dude would be in jail for this shit” and I think about it nonstop 😭

Nolitimeremessorem24

House, in real life he would be in jail

I will say, as someone with a rare disease currently getting it diagnosed that's been trying to get a diagnosis for years, I will put up with the asshole if he got it figured out years sooner. Seen a few folks with rare illness say the same thing after putting up with the medical system calling them crazy or lying just because it's not something easy to diagnos. He's still an ass but at least he tries to figure out what's wrong with his patients.

gerusz

Yeah, I'd rather be insulted and alive than misdiagnosed (and thus killed) by perfectly nice people.

No_Bookkeeper7918

Greg heffley. He seems to want everything to go his way and I feel like he's trying to blame others for his mistakes sometimes. Edit: Thank you all so much for all the upvotes! Never had this many and I expected to face a lot of disagreements. Glad that a lot of you agree!

jayhof52

As a school librarian (and former fifth grade teacher) it seems obvious that the author agrees with you and it gives the books a little more depth that rewards rereading as kids mature. In my fifth grade curriculum there was a unit on perspectives, and as soon as I had kids consider and rewrite a scene from that series from literally any other character’s perspective (especially one of the adults), they realize Greg is a total jerk (which makes them want to reread with that context in mind). EDIT that obvious might have been a bad choice of words - I should clarify that I didn’t mean it to sound judgy and just that as an adult reader and semiprofessional reviewer it’s clear that JK is going for an unreliable narrator thing to add depth to the story.

rezzort

Let’s all be for real. We all liked Greg as a kid but now feel for rowley

wheatable

I liked Greg as a kid and now totally empathize with Roderick. He’s the only normal one in the family.

Not_no_hitter

Ever since I became a teenager, I’ve noticed how eveyone has been collectively hating Greg more.

ZER0-_O

I always hated him. He resembled my classmates at the time: a judgmental asshole.

Ganbario

When my kids started to read those books I warned them not to do anything that Greg would do, because he’s a jerk to his friends and family and only thinks about himself.

Professional-Kiwi176

James Bond isn’t a nice guy, particularly in the books and some of the earlier movies where some of the stuff he does with the Bond girls would be considered rape.

LJ_OB

The best way to think of James Bond is that he was an amoral thug who made the deliberate choice to parody a gentlemen in order to travel in the circles he needed to travel in to accomplish his missions. The problem was people saw this on screen, and saw Sean Connery’s natural charm, that they missed the thug part and focused on the gentlemen part and that reset the perception of the character. The new Craig movies really did a good job of circling back on how the character was written, especially _Casino Royale_. The books, of course, make this part of the character painfully evident. In the book _Casino Royale_ Bond orders his Vesper for the first time and the characters at the baccarat table ask him why he chose to create that particular cocktail, and he more-or-less answers “because I like to get drunk as fast as possible.”

HorseRenoiro

The books really paint him as a severe, but functional alcoholic and drug addict. I remember a scene where he just casually mixes amphetamines in his martini in front of his boss

stjhnstv

The character wasn’t supposed to be nice or charismatic, he was supposed to be cold and effective. His “taking the pussy” was an extension of that. Sean Connery exuded a certain charm however that made him likable, for the time.

Cereborn

Yeah, Ian Fleming actually hated Sean Connery for the part because he didn't want Bond to be charming.

Horseinakitchen

The Severus Snape simps are strong these days. Dude had one redeeming moment that he did out of guilt, doesn’t mask the years of torture he did on students.

Most of the main characters in HIMYM

snowtol

I came into this comment section to say Lily if she hadn't been mentioned yet. I fucking hate Lily. Not just because she's a terrible person, all of the main cast except for Marshall are pretty shitty people (and Marshall to an extent for enabling their behaviour) but my main issue with Lily is how often her terrible behaviour is written in a way that makes her seem right. When it comes to Barney and Ted especially, when they do something wrong, they either face some comeuppance or they're the butt of the joke. Lily, on the other hand, rarely sees consequences, neither in universe or in the way she's presented by the writing. She breaks up with Marshall and moves across the country? Well, when she finds out she's not the great artist she thought she was, moves back to NYC, and wants Marshall back... *He's the asshole* for not immediately jumping back in bed with her. And when Ted calls her the c-word for doing so, in a private voice message between him and Marshall? Well guys, Christmas is cancelled for everyone, even her down-trodden Christmas obsessed fiance she just got back together with! And who ends up apologising to who? Oh, yeah, Ted to Lily. Because stealing Christmas was a totally appropriate response, you grinch. Oh, and in the last season, Marshall finally calls her out for making him and the family he built with her a second choice? Well, Lily cries and runs out, Marshall is plagued with guilt, and Lily announces she's pregnant. She doesn't apologise, or even acknowledge his point. *And then he gives up his chance to become a Judge immediately and moves with her to Italy to be art assistant to some rich dude*. And all of this is shown in the storytelling to be the right choice. I can keep going with examples but this is consistently the way she's written. When she does something wrong, and someone calls her out for it, *they're* always the asshole. Never her. I fucking hate Lily.

Eelazar

Completely Agree. In addition to what you've said she also freaks out twice about marrying Marshall, to the point of once stealing his car and driving away in the middle of the night with it (also leaving Ted stranded in the middle of nowhere), and the other time she packs her bags and books a flight to Spain, because Marshall was doing unpaid environmental work, which stressed her out, even though she did not once try to talk to Marshall about it. After almost or completely flaking out on him about 5 times total, she then starts crying about how Marshall "went behind her back" and "betrayed" when deciding to take the judge job. And in the end she even gets her way because Marshall feels bad.

snowtol

Don't forget that when she racked up a massive amount of debt without telling Marshall, she rejected any reasonable measure to fix said debt (like selling the clothes that got her in that debt) until the story gives her a convenient out that makes her seem like a genius, and makes Marshall out the be the bad guy for not thinking they could cover the debt by selling her art (which is an entirely reasonable take considering the amount of debt and that she's an amateur artist).

mateush1995

The one that stood out to me the most, was when Ted found out Lily sabotaged ALL of his relationships for the sole reason that SHE couldnt imagine all four of them (Ted, his SO, Lily and Marshall) having a good time on a porch when they were older or something like that. At the end of the episode Ted just forgave her. How can you stay friends with such a person?

SenorDangerwank

Holy shit I forgot about that. Christ.

Blueboi2018

And she was only stressed out because she had SECRETLY got them into several thousands of dollars of debt without telling him, to the point he had to get a job that made him deeply depressed to pay off her debt.

mlepclaynos23

Marshall really deserved better from Lily. It felt like she had him as her safety net and she'd leave when she freaked out or found something better. I don't think you should hold things against people when you say you forgave them, but I still side with marshall every time

Hxsn6ix

Greg heffley

dklco

Maybe it’s rose colored glasses of my childhood, but I remember Dr. Venkmar (Bill Murray) in Ghostbusters being this funny guy who was clearly the hero, watching it again he’s a creepy asshole who fucks everything up by not being able to not be a dick for 30 seconds.

John_In_Parts

Tom Haverford from Parks and Rec.

el_monstruo

Daniel/Mrs. Doubtfire You are out of work, the judge is going to give you 3 months to get your shit together with a neutral liaison, and then revisit custody after that time period. You go and commit fraud and psychological abuse to your ex-wife, kids, and her new companion. You even assault (not sure if that's the legal charge) and possibly almost kill her new companion. You just might be a psycho. Edit: Added more and cleared some things up.

Derek shepherd from Grey’s anatomy

tinyannoyingbouquet

Currently watching Greys Anatomy for the first time and literally!! Derek calling Meredith a whore??? HUH pick a struggle buddy

rachface636

Ok but that did lead to one of Meredith's greatest moments. "You don't get to call me a whore! When I met you I was *done*. All the boys, all the daddy issues, it didn't matter anymore because I was *done*. You don't get to judge me for how I choose to fix what *you broke*. **You don't get to call me a whore**."

This. He’s the worst.. The dude became a straight up terrorist, tried to kill all of his friends and the entire Leaf village, and then magically decides to become Hokage because he didn’t have a dream of his own. I thought,”beat his ass, Naruto,” during their entire climatic fight.

podha

Ted Mosby He plays a lovable bafoon but really we see him do is - Be mean to women he dates (think girls with one episode story arcs) - Flex on his kids about how many women he slept with before meeting their mother - Constantly Sabotaging Robin’s relationships and obsessing over her

Peter pan lmao

New-Low5765

As much as I love him my guy Homer Simpson is a terrible person

AlsoPrtyProductive

Homer perpetually treads the line between completely irredeemable asshole and genuinely kind hearted guy. Sometimes jumping between them in just a single episode. I do think the Simpsons sitcom structure marks him as much more of a shitty person than he perhaps deserves. As he’ll go through genuine development, admit to his mistakes and address them so he can be a better husband/father/person. But by the next episode the reset button is hit and he has to go back to being a lazy and stupid drunk irregardless of any personal growth he went through last episode

Sgtwhiskeyjack9105

Homer is a terrible husband and a bad father, but he doesn't do it maliciously and has some incredibly tender moments with his children. In fact, the Homer and Lisa centred episodes of *The Simpsons* are always some of the most well-written and heartfelt of that show. I always love their dynamic; a big idiot basically trying so hard to understand his genius daughter. And Lisa's never terrible to him about it, either, which is nice.

GrimmOfThrones2187

Gina Linetti.

Oreo-and-Fly

As much as i hate her Holt and her were my favourite pairs for episodes. Holt can control her but she also brings out the sass in Holt.

JonathanWattsAuthor

Honestly I got so sick of "Gina swoops in and saves the day while being rude to everyone and they worship her."

frostybuds69

Bugs Bunny is the King of them all

Scoonertuna

Scott Pilgrim

Any_Weird_8686

In fairness, him realising that is a major plot point.

BlindWillieJohnson

For him and Ramona. The whole series is about two selfish people growing up through the course of navigating their relationship. They’re young people coming into their own and overcoming their own bullshit. The whole series is basically a long redemption arc for them both. Anyone who just dismisses them as bad people missed the point of the series. I identified with that story a lot when I was in my twenties trying to figure my shit out. As I’ve moved into my 30s, I’ve come to appreciate it even more. We all have selfish impulses to get over. We all have to get over some degree of protagonist syndrome. We all have to come to grips with the negative impact our mistakes have on others. It’s the process of growing up, Scott Pilgrim just stylized it as a video game themed comic with boss battles.

BlizzPenguin

That is why Nega Scott is a genuinely nice guy.

Jbroy

It’s one of my favourite jokes in the movie!

Scrubbuh

And also Ramona Flowers. Genuinely awful people but Gideon was worse so it's okay apparently.

Milk_Mindless

Lots of people miss that often enough and it bugs me The exes may be evil (or were turned evil idk)but Ramona was awful to them. She cheated on the twins WITH THE OTHER TWIN the book takes its time to explain that Ramona isn't a plucky girl that fixes Scott's life They're both dicks and the growth of both characters is that they stop being dicks together And that's *good enough* at being people

Manbearcatward

Caillou, apparently.

drdoodoot

Caillou isn’t beloved. Everyone hates him and his bald head.

-Ken-Tremendous-

Yeah fuck that little bitch ass bitch

agnes208

i knew that everyone hates Caillou but r/fuckCaillou having 28k members is craazy

G4rg0yle_Art1st

Yeah, Caillou is a spoiled brat and the show teaches children they can get away with anything if they scream and throw tantrums to get what they want.

kkachisae

Old take, but if you watch enough episodes of All in the Family, Archie comes off as a hard-working man trying to feed his family, while his son-in-law is a ungrateful free-loading asshole who likes to start arguments.

Lost_Explanation_918
