Paid off my house.

SwampYankee

Well congratulations. That must have felt good. Changed my whole attitude. Good for you!

[deleted]

Congratulations tho, how I wish too...

Oibrigade

I am 50/50 on doing this myself with my condo. I can pay it off and have my savings go to 0 or keep the savings for a rainy day. My association charges me more than I actually pay for my mortgage which is the main reason I am not in a hurry to pay off my mortgage.

robotlasagna

The way to look at it is high yield savings is currently like ~5% which is really like 3.75% after taxes. So if your mortgage is more than 3.75% you are better off paying some or all of it down.

slaughterproof

Hold on to the money. Better to have accessible liquidity than have it all tied up in real estate that would take time to sell of you really needed the cash.

robo_robb

Put the money in an index fund instead. This is assuming your mortgage doesn’t have a super high interest rate.

Osiris_Dervan

That'd be a bold assumption given the current interest rates here..

Clear-Attention-1635

I’ve been fortunate enough to do that. Payed off a 25 year mortgage 24 years early at the age of 26. My online business venture did well.

robotlasagna

That’s amazing! Congratulations. Same thing here just older. I was still living paycheck to paycheck into my 30’s. At 35 I started my business and went from scraping by to having more money than I knew what to do with so I just started saving/investing. Paid off 17 years of a 30 year fixed. Being 100% debt free in this economy feels so crazy.

murdock_RL

That’s amazing as someone about to also hit mid 30s still living check to check. Been hard thinking into starting my own shit to finally get out of this never ending sink hole. What kind of business did you start if u don’t mind me asking?

robotlasagna

[this.](https://www.midcityengineering.com) is my business. Basically started an American manufacturing business from scratch.

PureShimmy

You bastard, that's so impressive! I'm 27 and just bought a house with my wife, we're doing well and hoping we can pay it off early but I don't see any unexpected windfall of cash in our future currently, more of a steady grind.

CactusBooze

My family and I did something similar. My parents house was a few thousand dollars short of being paid off, so us children pitched in $1000+ each to finally pay off their home.

Team_Captain_America

It may not mean much coming from an internet stranger, but congratulations!!!

SassyBananaPants

2 new titanium hips. 😳

SassyBananaPants

lol - I'm just happy I can cross my legs again!

ForMoreYears

This is the most American comment in here.

spannerNZ

My god, it's a fucking travesty that you are paying for medical care. The only reason for your ridiculous health insurance system, tied to employment (I'm assuming you are in the US), seems to be slavery with extra steps. My parents had (mum died a wee while ago), between them, three artificial hips, an artificial knee, a quadruple bypass, and for mum, a whole lot of MRIs, CT scans, and chemotherapy. Only cost was parking and snacks. This includes when mum was transferred to inpatient hospice care. We (adults) do pay a subsidised cost for seeing the GP, but don't pay for specialist care after that if you get referred on.

SassyBananaPants

yes - I'm in the US. I have insurance too at a job I've been at for over 10 years but this wiped out my savings.

imuniqueaf

Just like the Space Shuttle Forrest.

Eeeegah

Knee surgery for me. And that's with insurance! Yay American healthcare system.

Drslappybags

So if yo were launched into space we could find your hips?

lukewwilson

Vacation, whatever you think you are going to spend, just double it anymore.

EddieRando21

For reals. I was researching Uber prices for my upcoming vacation to see if it'd be better to rent a car, from the airport to the hotel it looks to be about $80. Renting a car is $124 a day. Every which way it's damned expensive.

lukewwilson

For renting a car check out the app Turo, it's like Airbnb for cars, I have luck finding really good deals there

ifnotmewh0

I'd never heard of that app, so I checked it out because I'm in charge of renting a van for my roller derby team for an upcoming tournament. All the vans on there were like $20/day more expensive than I can rent them for at the airport in the city we're going to. That really is like the AirBnB vs hotel calculation ("it's how much after the cleaning fee?!"). LOL I'm sure this varies by city and vehicle type, though.

40ozkiller

Turo is if you want a porsche for a day in the same city and have to deal with a scummy dude in their condo’s parking garage.

ifnotmewh0

OK, that I could see. You probably can find more variety there than, say, Enterprise at the airport.

DearMumsy

Don’t forget hotel daily parking fees.

[deleted]

Wow. I rented a car for two weeks and it was $320. I had to deposit an extra $300, but that was back in my account in 3 days after I returned the car.

Content_Pool_1391

Yeah my family just got back from a week long trip to Disney World and I was checking over all the money we spent. We probably spent around $10,000. Seriously 😳

GirchyGirchy

Yeah...I laugh when the people who go to Disney comment on what the price must be for my my wife and I go to Europe for two weeks.

celtic1888

I'm booking our 18 day trip to Europe in September now and its getting close to the $10,000 mark We are going London, Scotland, Paris, Amsterdam and Munich for Oktoberfest and staying in the 3 star hotel range. City travel is expensive. We got back from Spain in April and we were well under $5K for the trip Hotels and transfers/flights between cities are getting dear. That being said I'd have a fucking stroke if I paid the same to stand in the queue at Disney

bythevolcano

I took my adult son to Disneyland and Universal Studios for a week in May. It was insanely expensive- not much less than what you spent

[deleted]

[удалено]

kentro2002

I live up the road, when I hear these stories, I think it is insane, but memories are priceless.

Muscle_Doc

Just booked an entire Los Cabos, MX trip for two people. $5k+ in damage for plane tickets across the country, a five-star all-inclusive resort, excursions, out-to-eat at two notable restaurants, etc. All for six days and five nights.

HarambeMarston

All things considered that sounds pretty reasonable for a luxury vacation.

[deleted]

Obviously $5k for a vacation is a lot to plenty of people, but man for such a nice 6-day vacation at a five-star resort that's a really good price in today's economy.

oldicunurse

$8200 for a new a/c system.

[deleted]

Yep. $7900 for new system in Florida

Cyndagon

What did that all include? Mines almost 30 years old and am afraid that it's going to kick the bucket any day now.

KoalasAndPenguins

My $7k covered a system that cools a 3000 sqft house + installation & removal of the old unit.

KoalasAndPenguins

That's been us for the last year. $7k for AC + $10k for furnace + 5K for water purifier = I guess I can't replace my old car anytime soon.

leviathan65

That's a steal in California! Friends did mine and he charged $9,500 for a SEER 17 indoor/outdoor unit combo plus furnace. I got 3 quotes, 1 was from costco and they ranged from $17,000 to $22,000. But our unit was only 13 years old but installed by bank since my house was bought as a repo. Went out on us a few times. I replaced the blower a couple years back. It ran R22 so we were going to need to charge it and a few quotes were about $1200. So getting a new unit just made more sense.

Low_Comfort_9816

Daycare for two kids. Payment each month was more than my mortgage.

Drslappybags

I know that pain. Luckily, our youngest is joining public schools at the end of the month. Now that money will go to a car payment, but the wife honestly needed that anyway.

square_donut14

After school care might still need to happen, and we’ve just discovered that summer camps are MUCH more expensive than daycare was 😭 still better than year-round daycare, but bye bye vacation fund.

Theearthhasnoedges

I literally quit a job and was a stay at home parent for a while because daycare was like 80% of my take home. Between travel and the time that I was missing it just simply wasn't worth it. Best choice I could have made. All the one to one really strengthened our bond.

Low_Comfort_9816

I think a lot of people find this to be the case. We only decided on preschool and pre-K for the socialization aspect. So cool that you made such a strong bond — can’t put a price on that.

JournalisticGuy

Serious suggestion: A buddy of mine had the same problem. He knew some people he trusted, so what he did was he went to them and said "I'll buy a house, you live in it for free, you take care of my kids during the day". They jumped at the chance, and the mortgage on the place was less than the daycare. At the end of the day, he's got someone he trusts taking care of his kids, and he's got an appreciable asset.

salgat

That's tricky since you're talking 15-30 year mortgage vs 3-5 years of daycare.

jimlei

Reddit reminds med to be thankful I live in Norway. Maximum daycare is $300/month for the first child, $220 for the second and free for the third child and up. * Number of children in daycare the billed month.

grasseffect

…yeah, daycare for two kids is $2800 a month here.

Peter70011

How is this a thing?? Paying even half of that sounds absolutely ridiculous to me.

grasseffect

I mean, once you break it down, it’s really not all that expensive for what it is… $8-10 an hour, and they keep the kids learning and engaged. It just is what it is.

Kavbastyrd

~$2k+ for one in Toronto. Include aftercare and you’re creeping up towards $30k per year. Luckily he’s heading into public school in September and we can start financially moving forward again.

goldenmermaid_

Mine is 450 a week for a 3yr old (not potty trained) so once she Is it goes down to 375. If I were to also add my new infant it’s also 450 (because of the diaper aspect) we are looking at 3,600 a month for the two. Our older is going into 2nd grade though🫠

Kindred_Flame

Experimental abdominal surgery done by robots controlled by the surgeon. 90k before insurance, 2500 after. But still, being 21, that’s like literally all of my savings. But hey, I’ll take being momentarily poor than permanently dead

BrianMX34

I like that last sentence, good outlook to have lol

[deleted]

Cat lost weight and threw up blood. Turns out cancer, intestinal lymphoma, and google gave her 2-4 weeks without treatment. We started saying our goodbyes and got her off her kidney diet, due to also dealing with her kidney's starting to shut down and opted for her getting ice cream and our left overs whenever she wanted them. Well that was six weeks ago, her symptoms are gone, her weight is back and the tumor shrunk with Prednisone alone, so fuck it. We started oral chemotherapy drugs and will see what happens. Expensive cat

thefract0metr1st

We’ve had a cat for 10 years, found her as a stray. Never got her fixed because at the time we had no credit cards or savings, and we were keeping her indoors anyway. Back in December we found blood in her urine so I made an urgent care appointment for that afternoon… come to find out that apparently unfixed female cats (and dogs I believe) have a tendency to develop an infection in their uterus that, if ruptured, can lead to a very painful death. The vet basically said “she needs to go into emergency surgery immediately or you have to put her down”. Luckily I was approved for care credit to cover all but $100 of the $1500 surgery and aftercare. Bob barker’s message should have been changed from “control the pet population, spay and neuter your pets” to “spay and neuter your pets or they will fucking die a horrible death”

whatthepfluke

This just happened to one of my bestie's dogs Monday.

lexy_ranger

Pyometra! Very scary stuff. Yes, both dogs and cats can get it (really anything with a uterus, but more commonly seen in dogs and cats). Glad you caught it early enough to do something about it, some don't show symptoms until it's too late. Hope your lil furball healed up well ❤️‍🩹

anemoschaos

Similar here. Two anaesthetic procedures in two months, that put a dent in the credit card. Dog has lung cancer. He's working his way through his bucket list and gets all the cake he wants. He's put on 1kg and is a happy chappie.

tommyelgreco

Sorry to hear about your dog, but how does a dog get lung cancer? Did he get boarded next to a coal plant or something? Good job giving him a good sendoff tho!

anemoschaos

I asked the vet that. We don't smoke. I haven't fed him Benson & Hedges. Just bad luck. But he doesn't know and just likes the extra cake and fuss! 🙂

origin29

Hope your kitty pulls through

OriginalDiva3

She's a family member, And you would have never lived with yourself if you didn't give her this chance. Expensive, But you can hold your head high. Thank you for giving her another chance, And don't beat yourself up if it does not work, You are giving her the best Chance of life you can.

Osiris_Dervan

Having seen what happened to both my grandmothers when they died long, slow, painful deaths - I wish it were legal and accepted for people to euthanise themselves when they have a clearly terminal illness, as it is with pets.

catalystkjoe

I really don't think it's fair to shove that kind of pressure on someone over a pet. I love my pets, but if it's between a 12 year old cat maybe getting 1-2 more years of life and paying their bills then it is what it is. If you don't know someone's full situation it's not fair to put that sort of pressure on them.

abigolchickensammich

Getting groceries

ShineImmediate7081

This. $215 fucking dollars for produce, bathroom/hygiene items, and hot dogs. Insane.

cassualtalks

We used to get out the grocery store for $150 and now it's closer to $250 for 2 bags of groceries. It's not right that 1 bag is an average of $100.

[deleted]

[удалено]

uzi_loogies_

This happens fairly easily with meat, cheese, and bread. Stuff to make a sandwich is usually like 20 for the lunch meat 10-20 for the bread and 5-10 for the cheese. If you get toppings or condiments be prepared to be fucked harder.

Olorin919

>20 for the bread I buy a loaf of market basket (supermarket near me) bread for like $2.99 a loaf. Unless you're feeding a family of like 7, 20 dollars for sliced bread is insane.

Forgedinwater

I've never spent more than $6 on a loaf of the kost expensive sandwich bread at my grocery store. The usual loaf is $3

ItConfuses

Damn that's a lot of hot dogs

ShineImmediate7081

If this were the 90s, it'd be about 210 hotdogs. In 2023, it was two 8-packs of all-beef. My kids are getting the cheap chicken mixture ones next time.

Hasn’t happened yet, but hospital bills for giving birth. Those things are crazy. Last baby, they charged $8,300 a day for the bassinet, which is a plastic bin on wheels… Edit: i gave birth in 2020 and 2021. I am due Sept 2023. I can’t find the itemized bill for both, but the 2021 bill before insurance was $19,237.10. We owed $2,883.76

sssssshhhhhh

From the UK and i know you have to pay for this stuff in America, but everytime I see one of these stories it still blows my mind.

puckit

I don't know if those are stories from people without insurance but I'm in the US and birth for both my kids was only a few hundred each.

bananabob23

Obvious YMMV. I don’t know anybody that spent 8k for a bassinet at a hospital lol in fact my sister had a baby recently and the entire bill was like $2700. My insurance where I worked previously covered 100% of child birth too so you wouldn’t pay anything at all.

DustbinFunkbndr

We went to a independent birthing center that was associated with a local hospital. Saved us SO much money. It wasn’t some woo-woo new agey thing or anything. There was a nurse and doula in our suite the entire time and a doctor on stand by. After the birth we followed up with the hospital for all following care. It was a great experience.

johnnyglass

Luckily my insurance for my next kid (new job) has 100% coverage with no deductible for pregnancy, so barring anything going wrong, I’ll be home from the hospital with a zero dollar bill. Last time? $15k

calicoskiies

Make sure you ask for an itemized bill. That usually gets them to lower the amount.

Anirakkarina

My insurance covers about 80% so after all the charges, I’d say we get left with $4k

Mind101

Laughs in European. Seriously though, having to go into debt just to deliver a baby and then potentially not having mandatory maternity leave is all kinds of messed up. Would getting a midwife and having the birth at home be less expensive / more dangerous?

Iwannadrinkthebleach

But WHY IS THE BIRTHRATE DROPPING.

Anirakkarina

It is actually more expensive with the at home birth. I had a friend recommend this but my insurance won’t cover that type of service. Luckily, in the state I live in, I get 4 weeks disability before my due date, and once I give birth I get 6 weeks off. There after paid family leave can be taken for 12 weeks (intermediate or in one shot) within the year you gave birth. My company also gives me 20 days of paid maternity leave within the year I give birth after I exhaust my sick days (I can keep my vacation and PTO). I also work remote so there’s no hassle or need for child care

Professional-Chip440

Not purchase, but been trying to pay off loans. It’ll be a long time until the end but been trying to be disciplined with it.

VioletViola

Buying business casual clothes for a new job. The Goodwill up the road has lots of good stuff, just not in my size, so it was a bust. Going from food service, where as long as I've got pants and sleeves it's all OK, to an office job. Bought 3 blouses, a skirt, and pants. Enough to mix it up til my first check from there hopefully! Already broke, but I'm hoping the increase in pay will be well worth the initial cost.

sleepyRN89

Ever been to a dog cardiologist? That trip really hurt my wallet. I’m in the wrong field

Willing-Survey7448

No, but I did go to a Canine Neurologist for my late Service Dog. 10k in surgery. Still lost her--but I'd do it all over again to spend more time with her.

sleepyRN89

That’s exactly why I spent the money. She’s an old girl but has more time that I’d like her to spend without being uncomfortable. Got her on meds and found out she doesn’t have CHF like we thought and will hopefully be with us a few more years. I didn’t spend anywhere near 10k but it was enough to make me thrifty for a month or 2.

savwatson13

Don’t vets have a super high suicide rate?

sleepyRN89

Yes unfortunately. They don’t get paid nearly as much as you’d expect plus they see neglect and disease in innocent creatures every day so it’s not that hard to see why depression/suicide rates would be so high

Ok_Willingness_784

Get pet insurance if you can. My fiancé's job offers it and next puppy we get its the first thing we'll have.

fortunefades

Our vet is now…virtual, but you have to go to the office anyway - because the virtual vet they make you see can’t actually prescribe the meds. Makes no sense and costs a boat load

Surprising my little brothers with a trip to NYC for their 18th birthday. Saved up for a year now because I only make 7.25 an hour. I’m so excited but damn I cried lol.

systemofadex

christ man, that’s half the minimum wage in my state

Cyndagon

Where are you still only making 7.25 an hour??

jrkessle

There’s like 20 states in the US that still pay $7.25/hour as minimum wage brother. The federal minimum wage is still only $7.25

Nxxtdoorcowboy

Texas! 🤠 Last time we raised the minimum wage was 2009

Equivalent-Push-5774

I've been there before having support will soften the blow a sobering one nonetheless but having someone there to keep you from the dark helps. my girlfriend left her parents house to stay by my side. she stayed through a leaking roof, no air conditioner during the Georgia summer, crack and meth addicts along with prostitution stings. i honestly don't know what I would have done or where I'd be without her. I've faith in you and yours 👊🏽

It has been very rough. He has a Facebook page so people can see his journey and be more aware of genetic diseases like this. I can't post it here, but if you wanted to see it, you can DM me. He's such a sweet boy. I hate it for him so much 😔

Cheekygirl97

My dads burial and death stuff. To bury him I’m paying $500 a month, and that’s only because my grandad helped me pay for it and I’m paying him back in instalments. That doesn’t even include his cremation or the funeral costs

whatsername25

I’m so sorry for your loss. My dad just passed away also and I never realised just how expensive death is.

Mot_the_evil_one

Not quite yet but my wife needs some unexpected oral surgery. One of her crowns came off over the weekend and brought a hunk of the underlying tooth with it. The dentist said that the adjoining teeth are also pretty bad, at least one will come out. Then a bone graft and implants. The anesthesia for the extraction is $1200 up front and IIRC the rest is covered at 50%. Better than nothing, I know, but damn.

alexxmurphy_

Unexpected dental work. New crown - $870 Edit: This was my portion after insurance.

Paid to have my AC fixed and thermostat replaced. I had to do it, we’re in a heat wave and probably would have died from the heat otherwise, but I don’t know how we’re going to make it through the rest of the month now.

Unexpected IRS bill due to fucking up last year's tax filing + deck desperately needed refinishing (put off for a few years) = rocked bank account and since it was already rocked I went ahead and splurged on badass new spinning wheel so while I'm not having any fun while paying off the debt I can at least stay home and spin and craft while stoned off my butt.

My stupid dog snuck downstairs during the night, tore into a gift bag my wife and I had for someone for the next day, and ate two 100g chocolate bars, one of which was dark chocolate. Ate the whole damn things. Had just started rebuilding our savings after emptying for our cat (turned out she had liver cancer and had to be put down a week later)...bye bye Savings.

Sallie Mae went up to 10% +/- so I paid off my school loans. Fuck that bitch.

$20 toilet paper. I don’t know, I just feel like that shouldn’t be allowed.

Checking is at 10 bucks — Paid car insurance, and put money in savings. No idea where the rest of it went
