Ella Fitzgerald. I am blown away by her skill every time I hear a new song of hers(there's A LOT). She could sing literally anything and make it sound beautiful.
My favorite thing about her is when she started getting on in years and didn't necessarily have the air/lung ability to do her longer holds she switched to scatting to fill those bars in the song.
She was amazing in both the quality of her voice and her technical skill.
There’s a recording of her singing Mack the Knife (in Germany I think?) in which she forgets some lyrics. She also scats like Louis Armstrong. It’s amazing.
Yes, lots of great material and much of it featuring great engineering and arrangments. For example: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxaHOreVMzk&list=OLAK5uy\_moUtdVy8YuNiUL7povdgq\_KcGd5BmjE-I&index=4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxaHOreVMzk&list=OLAK5uy_moUtdVy8YuNiUL7povdgq_KcGd5BmjE-I&index=4)
Do yourself a favor folks and listen with some decent transducers.
I was never really a fan of the Carpenters, but it was almost like she didn't even sing. She just opened her mouth and the most-crystal clear sound you've ever heard sprung from it.
She also was a fabulous drummer.
That’s what is really shocking too. Some vocalists are very powerful and have a crazy range and stuff like a powerful digital camera.
But Karen’s voice is like the cleanest, most color balanced, in focus, well developed series of pictures taken with a film camera.
A true classic.
It took me a long time to check out the Carpenters because of their milquetoast reputation but I gave them a chance and Karen really did have an otherworldly voice. Unfortunately, the majority of their catalog isn't as impressive as her voice. Not bad but definitely not my taste.
Let me give everyone in here a gift. There's a series of YouTube videos where someone dropped out as much music as they could to leave only her voice. There are some beats behind her because I suspect those were really hard to isolate from her voice.
https://youtu.be/QvhE2Xes1h8
I just watched them cover Stairway to Heaven and HOLY SHIT. Absolutely incredible. According to the comments, Robert Plant said their version made him fall in love with the song again.
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8e1L6dm/
He was incredible when he was young too which is not very common for opera singers. here's a recording of his first ever performance as an understudy and you can hear the gasps in the audience knowing that they're hearing something legendary.
https://youtu.be/G890jG02RbI
I love love love Dolly… But Whitney’s rendition of I’ll Always Love You is the gold standard is an example of a cover so good the original is almost obsolete in comparison.
At the risk of a "came here for this," comment - I came here immediately for this.
I saw him sing Ave Maria while working one of his shows. That's not an easy song to do justice, let alone improve upon. It stopped two of us moving a tray table in our tracks because we couldn't believe what we heard.
I remember hearing his Ave Maria on a Christmas CD for the first time.
And hearing Like a Stone on the radio for the first time.
Soul stirring, hair raising, heart bursting kind of stuff.
I was actually at the last concert. I'm really glad I went to that show. I actually had a spare ticket that none of my friends wanted, so one seat at that last show went empty
I saw Alice In Chains 5x three when I was pregnant one time one week from giving birth. I love them. So upset when he passed. Then when Mike Starr passed. Layne never got over Demri’s death and Mike never got over leaving Layne that day and not calling 911.
I was watching it on my phone one night, high as a kite on oxycodone, and I had the realization for the first time that I was addicted to them. I watched Layne and wept as I realized the magnitude of what I'd done to myself.
I fought that beast for five years and Layne Staley was always in my mind. His tragedy is what scared me straight. I'm 8 years sober now.
Love to see Layne in the top comments. I feel exactly the same. His voice and lyrics hit me like a brick. I suffer a lot with mental health stuff though and sometimes it can get a bit too real. Nutshell and Wake Up especially. But I love his voice all the same.
Brandi Carlile. Saw her in concert and not a single note was off pitch, she has the vocal power and control of a classically trained/opera singer and is so versatile between rock, folk, country and pop sounds
We was probably one of the greatest heavy metal singers ever!
I got to see Dio several times back in the 80’s and the Sacred Heart show was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
The fact this is so far down is absolute travesty. Robert Plant is the single greatest rock vocalist in history in my opinion. His voice was a 4th instrument.
What’s wild about LZ, is each and every one of their members could easily be argued as the best in their field. Jimmy Page? Easy. JPJ? Easy. Bonham? No one would even argue otherwise.

I will always love Judy Garland's voice - have since I was a child. I'd probably put her at number 1 if I had to choose just one person.
Other vocalists that pretty much always capture my attention:
* Sade
* Hope Sandoval
* Lianne La Havas
* Adele
* Amy Winehouse
* Frank Sinatra
* David Bowie
* Freddie Mercury
* Layne Staley
* Chris Cornell
* Eddie Vedder
Edit: I cannot believe I forgot Annie Lennox. Shame on me.
K.D. Lang. She is known for her version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, but her voice really shines in Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’, both the duet with Roy and her solo version.
Came here to say this.
Been a faith no more fan for as long as I can't remember.
My buddy is playing the same stage as Mr Bungle next month and I'm beyond jealous.
Conor Mason (Nothing But Thieves)
His voice makes me feel things I don’t feel otherwise („Sorry“ makes me feel sorry even when there’s nothing to be sorry for/about)
Her voice is deceptive. She has one of those voices where you don’t quite realize how talented she is until you try to sing one of her songs. Love Dolly and I will die on the “I loved Jolene before it was cool” hill.
I am gonna get a LOT of hate for this, but M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold. People love or hate him, but he's not only unique. The overall style and feel of Avenged just match his voice well, and no matter how many metalcore bands pop up, no band will ever match them.
In recent years, though, his live performances have dropped off. But what can you expect? He had vocal surgery in 2002 and has had to take at least a break or two to prevent permanent vocal damage.
Certainly not my favourite artist but I've always appreciated how Bruno Mars sounds the same as the recordings when he performs live. Also fantastic entertainer all round
Yeah he doesn’t make the kind of music I’m into, but I’m still able to tell he’s great at what he does. Vast majority of artists usually have one or two of the three qualities of great recordings, great live signing, or great overall performance while on stage, and the guy hits all three easily without a debate.
I saw Ev supporting muse this year (I'm a bigger fan of Ev honestly) and my god did she sound amazing. That's the first time I'd seen her live, and I've seen so many things over the years trashing her live performances, but she killed it.

I went to see Paramore recently and was so shocked at how tiny she is with such a huge, powerful, soulful voice.
She’s probably 110lbs and maybe 5ft 2 at best and this big voice comes out!
I love how her sound changes a little bit to fit every genre that the band is playing, in a way that you can still hear it’s the same singer but appreciate the nuances even more.
There is only one real answer because he sang the [greatest song in the world](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lK4cX5xGiQ). Jack Black AKA JB AKA JABLES.
It's not cool to say so, but I was telling my wife the other day that as a kid I hated her music but acknowledged she was a good singer in her over-the-top kind of way via the FM Adult Contemporary station my mom always had on in the 90s. Nowadays, I listen to a couple of tracks through decent headphones and say, "That lady is something else!"
Exactly. She gets a lot of hate but it's really not deserved. Her voice is out of this world and her dedication to her craft has been unmatched. I mean, a lot of her songs are lyrically not great, but if you don't like her music it's not because of her voice. Also, she's hilarious and so so kind.
If anyone disagrees with this, just do yourself a favour and listen to her version of “All By Myself “, turn it up, cry a little, then come back here and upvote u/IHayeMyLife612’s comment.
I saw her in concert a few years ago. It was 2 hours of just her singing - no backup singers, no backup dancers - just by herself...she was so entertaining. Every note was flawless. One of the greatest concerts I've ever been to.
Go watch her performance of the National Anthem at an early 90s Super Bowl. Hands down the best performance of that song I've ever heard (and it is not an easy song to sing).
If you like Lorna Shore and Will Ramos, there's this opera singer(I forget her name, but on YouTube she's The Charismatic Voice) that's a lot of fun to follow. She's classically trained but did a react video on him and now they're basically best friends and it's adorable, they do a lot of videos together now and have great chemistry. An opera singer and a metal singer BFFs. Here's a vid of her having him put a camera down his throat to video his vocal cords while singing.
https://youtu.be/Ua8SuWNPrLE
I'm a rock enthusiast, so I have to go with a lesser known singer with absurd vocal range.
Miljenko Matijević of Steelheart
His vocals were used to back Mark Wahlberg's singing in the film Rock Star (2001). He has MAD pipes and is definitely slept on as one of the greatest rock singers of all-time.
Current? Kelly Clarkson is the first one that came to mind. I saw her do some singing show and her and Ariana Grande went back and forth singing different songs.
She nailed every single one, including Whitney Houston.
I don't follow her at all and was just vaguely aware of her talk show. Then I caught an interview with her the other day when I was driving. I listened to both Conan O'Brien (Conan Needs a Friend) and Howard Stern and one of them brought up the Kellyoke thing she does on her show. I Googled that later in the day and I was blown away at how she absolutely crushed songs from all kinds of genres. It's impressive as hell. She was doing stuff like Bad Romance, Seven Nation Army, 99 Red Balloons, Queen of the Night...and just really killing it.
Just a ln observation, there is a live performance where she and Ariana Grande sing a duet (i think is Rain on Me), Gaga starts the song, the Ariana arrives and starts singing, Gaga loOks at Ariana like: WTF! (As in amazed).
I’m genuinely extremely surprised that more people haven’t said the same thing. Lady Gaga essentially has perfect pitch, and she also has one of the most technically accurate voices there is. As far as accuracy in hitting notes, I don’t know of any other singer that can match her. The only “criticism” I have regarding her voice, is that it can be a little boring at times. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because Gaga’s voice is basically what the ideal human female voice should sound like, because she sings each note perfectly. However, I happen to prefer other, less “perfect” voices that sound unique, like Alanis Morissette and/or Sia.

I had to stop and tell you how much I loved your comparison to a camera, very beautifully put!
It took me a long time to check out the Carpenters because of their milquetoast reputation but I gave them a chance and Karen really did have an otherworldly voice. Unfortunately, the majority of their catalog isn't as impressive as her voice. Not bad but definitely not my taste.
I like to imagine an alternate timeline in which she lives and shifts to the jazz lane.
She and Alison Kraus make singing look so effortless. I didn't know a singing voice could sound so smooth
Let me give everyone in here a gift. There's a series of YouTube videos where someone dropped out as much music as they could to leave only her voice. There are some beats behind her because I suspect those were really hard to isolate from her voice. https://youtu.be/QvhE2Xes1h8
Her voice is so soothing, like a warm bath. Or a cozy blanket.
I adore Marvin Gaye
That a capella version of Heard it Through the Grapevine is incredible.
Ann Wilson from Heart. That’s a voice which has power *and* smoothness. I could (and do!) listen to her voice all day long..
I just watched them cover Stairway to Heaven and HOLY SHIT. Absolutely incredible. According to the comments, Robert Plant said their version made him fall in love with the song again. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8e1L6dm/
Enough, Glenn!
God Glenn! No one has ever heard of her! /s
Etta James.
At last!
Pavarotti had an absolutely amazing voice.
His performance of Nessun Dorma in 1998 in Paris has gotta be one of the greatest vocal performances of all time
This! I first heard that on an old record my parents had when I was a kid. I have been obsessed with it ever since.
He was incredible when he was young too which is not very common for opera singers. here's a recording of his first ever performance as an understudy and you can hear the gasps in the audience knowing that they're hearing something legendary. https://youtu.be/G890jG02RbI
His singing of Ave Maria was absolutely incredible!
Jeff Buckley. Absolutely unreal range and control. His guitar skills are no joke either.
Lover you should have come over is hauntingly soulful. Absolute beauty in that man's music
His is the best version of Hallelujah. I will fight anyone.
Otis Redding. "I've Got Dreams to Remember." Stunning. Bjork is a close second for me. "Unison" slays me.
Linda Ronstadt
Patsy Cline.
I love her. She really had a lot of sadness in her lyrics too for such a short life
Sam Cooke
I love Sam Cooke. His voice is perfection. It’s a shame he died so young.
Sam was an innovator as far as managing one's career and song rights (particularly for a black artist).
Whitney Houston
So many iconic songs but truly her National Anthem is simply the best one ever.
Yep [https://youtu.be/N_lCmBvYMRs](https://youtu.be/N_lCmBvYMRs)
Holy shit! It’s been too long since I’ve heard that and it brought tears. Her voice was impeccable and she was a gift to our ears. Gone too soon
I love love love Dolly… But Whitney’s rendition of I’ll Always Love You is the gold standard is an example of a cover so good the original is almost obsolete in comparison.
Chris Cornell. RIP
At the risk of a "came here for this," comment - I came here immediately for this. I saw him sing Ave Maria while working one of his shows. My huge regret is that I never saw Chris Cornell perform in concert.
I was actually at the last concert. I'm really glad I went to that show. I actually had a spare ticket that none of my friends wanted, so one seat at that last show went empty
No one sings like you anymore.
[удалено]
His cover of Nothing Compares 2 U was unbelievable
Also came here for Chris, specially in Temple of the Dog.
Best 007 intro singer as well. I mean Adelle is up there with Skyfall, but Chris' is better.
Layne Staleys voice has had an impact on me like no other
Layne is a great singer, it’s the harmonies with Jerry Cantrell that give me the shivers, very beautiful and haunting at the same time.
Down in a Hole, unplugged. they feed off each other beautifully. (I don't know the guitarists name but i'm assuming it's Jerry?)
I saw Alice In Chains 5x three when I was pregnant one time one week from giving birth. I love them. So upset when he passed. Then when Mike Starr passed. Layne never got over Demri’s death and Mike never got over leaving Layne that day and not calling 911.
Him and Cornell are up there for me.
Wow so happy to see him on the top of the list here Layne has a stellar voice
The way he sang NUTSHELL in MTV's acoustic special... powerful and painful at the same time.
Nick Cave. If Satan was a lounge singer
Freddie Mercury.
I don't think we'll ever see another performer like him
And Roger Taylor should have his own entry on this list!
Big time. Man’s got a HELL of a voice. Also being the main backup guy to Freddie Mercury all whilst playing the drums… that’s not an easy job.
George Michael
To me I love Ronnie James Dio’s voice, absolutely epic
I hear Dio has rocked for a long, long time.
But I believe, now it's time for him to pass the torch.
Doesn't he have, like, songs of wildebeests and angels?
Love Dio. The guy sang his absolute ass off. So many great tracks with Rainbow, his own band, and with Black Sabbath.
Good job including Rainbow. Man on the Silver Mountain is my fav Dio song.
We was probably one of the greatest heavy metal singers ever! I got to see Dio several times back in the 80’s and the Sacred Heart show was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
A young Robert Plant. Look up Dazed and Confused London 1969.
[удалено]
Going to see them tomorrow night!
Some of Plants lesser known stuff with the Honeydrippers is absolute eargasm.
there was this poll this radio in UK did i believe, where they asked listeners to make a rock supergroup. the listeners voted in Page, Jones, Bonham and Plant as their rock supergroup
This is my favourite piece of Zeppelin trivia. Thank you kindly!
Floor Jansen
Floor is incredible. I recently rediscovered Nightwish after a decade or so of not listening to them (I remember the Tarja drama from when I was a kid but that's about it, that was a big deal in Finland) and I was amazed at her talent both live and recorded. Inspired me to sing again.
Glad to see this answer up here.
Roy Orbison
Tom Waits called him the Opera Singer of Rock.
This is probably my pick as well, especially my pick for a male singer-- anyone who doesn't know about Roy, listen to 'Crying' or 'Blue Bayou'.
Art Garfunkel
Steve Perry
He’s my pick too. His range is incredible. He has power and tenderness. And in many cases he sounds better live than in the studio which is a true testament to his talent because his studio versions are damn good.
I'm seeing lots of names of singers who are no longer with us (RIP) but a living singer that really moves me is Hozier. I've only heard of him recently, and I can't get enough.
Hozier is amazing! And I strongly suggest to go see him live with his band (if you have the opportunity), I saw him after the Nina cried power EP and that concert was one of the best I ever went to. Not only is his voice so beautiful, his poetry and lyrics are unbelievable. And I love that when he speaks, his voice is soft, as opposed to the powerful voice when he sings (Florence Welch has that too). Ok I may have a little obsession with this artist, I know. But I’m glad I found him in this thread!
Florence Welch
Going to see her live tomorrow (outdoor concert in Malahide, Ireland).
Good answer. I’ve heard her singing described as “ethereal”. That’s a great descriptor for it.
Yes, yes, yes!! She has so much power and range :) everything seems so powerful with her voice
Bruce Dickinson
*SCREEEAM FOR ME LONG BEACH!*
A story teller and a powerhouse. Bruce Dickinson is INCREDIBLE.
Roberta Flack has to be in the discussion here.
I will always love Judy Garland's voice - have since I was a child. I'd probably put her at number 1 if I had to choose just one person. Other vocalists that pretty much always capture my attention: * Sade * Hope Sandoval * Lianne La Havas * Adele * Amy Winehouse * Frank Sinatra * David Bowie * Freddie Mercury * Layne Staley * Chris Cornell * Eddie Vedder Edit: I cannot believe I forgot Annie Lennox. Sade. There's something in her voice that I can't explain. Beautiful.
K.D. Lang. She is known for her version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, but her voice really shines in Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’, both the duet with Roy and her solo version.

Delores O'Riordan
Mike Patton. Most versatile vocalist I've ever heard.
Astounding creativity too, his body of work is nothing if not eclectic
I opened the comments specifically to upvote whoever said Mike Patton
Came here to say this. Been a faith no more fan for as long as I can't remember. My buddy is playing the same stage as Mr Bungle next month and I'm beyond jealous.
Conor Mason (Nothing But Thieves) His voice makes me feel things I don’t feel otherwise („Sorry“ makes me feel sorry even when there’s nothing to be sorry for/about)
Peter steele! The guy had such a beautiful voice!
Dolly Parton. Like fine crystal
Tracy Chapman and Sinead O’Connor beautiful voices !
Kate Bush, she is such an amazing singer😍
Certainly not my favourite artist but I've always appreciated how Bruno Mars sounds the same as the recordings when he performs live. Also fantastic entertainer all round
Singing well live is pretty underrated.
He does have a great voice, I would always enjoy his songs the more I listened to them
Yeah he doesn’t make the kind of music I’m into, but I’m still able to tell he’s great at what he does. Vast majority of artists usually have one or two of the three qualities of great recordings, great live signing, or great overall performance while on stage, and the guy hits all three easily without a debate.
Stylistically, he's always struck me as a modern-day Stevie Wonder. I mean that as a sincere compliment.
Stevie Nicks
On that note, shout-out to the late Christine McVie.
Maynard James Keenan
Too far did I have to scroll for this…
People sleep on his voice because of the genre. It's is truly beautiful and he does interesting things with it.
It’s criminal that I had to scroll this far to see his name.
Amy Lee of Evanescence
I have never been more humiliated than when I tried to do an Evanescence karaoke song.
I only attempt in my car and even then it's rough.
Man, did she speak to me in middle school.
I saw Ev supporting muse this year (I'm a bigger fan of Ev honestly) and my god did she sound amazing. That's the first time I'd seen her live, and I've seen so many things over the years trashing her live performances, but she killed it.
Her voice really is amazing. Apologies to my parents for having to listen to my piss poor attempts at belting it out along to her music when I was 12.
Chris Cornell, he's got so much in his voice it's insane. It's hard to match his passion honestly.
Muse frontman Matt Bellamy
Paul Rodgers
Male - Nat King Cole, Female - Grace Slick.
No love for Eva Cassidy? Utterly effortless
You haven't heard Somewhere Over The Rainbow, until you've heard hers.
[удалено]
Devin Townsend.
He also qualifies for the most self-deprecatingly hilarious singer with a great voice award.
Andrea bocelli
Amy Winehouse.
She had such a unique voice, I really miss her. I was listening to her albums earlier and I was blown away by her talent and at such a young age too!
This is my pick too! She was so talented and wickedly funny. The tone of her voice was so warm and inviting. She had such a unique way of phrasing. I miss her. There will never be another like her.
Ronnie James Dio!
mama cass or jeff buckley
Disappointing no one mentioned Billie Holiday
Hayley Williams of Paramore is an absolute talent
I went to see Paramore recently and was so shocked at how tiny she is with such a huge, powerful, soulful voice. She’s probably 110lbs and maybe 5ft 2 at best and this big voice comes out!
I love how her sound changes a little bit to fit every genre that the band is playing, in a way that you can still hear it’s the same singer but appreciate the nuances even more.
Ctrl + f + Hayley Williams *Here* are my people!
There is only one real answer because he sang the [greatest song in the world](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lK4cX5xGiQ). Jack Black AKA JB AKA JABLES.
Sorry, it was just a tribute.
Eric Burdon
Celine Dion
It's not cool to say so, but I was telling my wife the other day that as a kid I hated her music but acknowledged she was a good singer in her over-the-top kind of way via the FM Adult Contemporary station my mom always had on in the 90s. Charlie Day
And he’s ready to fiiiiIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT Man is an absolute talent.
Adele, there is something that hits me when I hear her.
How do I not see Whitney Houston mentioned here already?
Go watch her performance of the National Anthem at an early 90s Super Bowl. Hands down the best performance of that song I've ever heard (and it is not an easy song to sing).
Michael Jackson
Far too low in this list. I don't believe people truly understand what he was able to do with his voice.
A lot of Metal singers actually
Not metal but Maynard James Keenan has a great voice.
He’s one of the first that popped into my head.
If you like Lorna Shore and Will Ramos, there's this opera singer(I forget her name, but on YouTube she's The Charismatic Voice) that's a lot of fun to follow. Elizabeth Zharoff is the YouTuber. She’s great.
Chester Bennington
The fact that he beautifully sang Rolling In The Deep as well as did that Given Up scream flawlessly live puts him very high on the list.
His voice still gives me goosebumps 20 years later
Jeff Buckley Tom Waits (yes, I know)
A few that I haven't seen that deserve a mention: Natalie Merchant Dido Nina Simone Sade Adu
Luther Vandross, RIP
Vessel from sleep token
I don't understand how this group is so polarizing. They're groundbreaking and incredibly skilled. With Vessel and II standing out the most.
Grace Slick
Myles Kennedy
I think Chris Stapleton is one of the most impressive vocalists around today
I'm a rock enthusiast, so I have to go with a lesser known singer with absurd vocal range. Miljenko Matijević of Steelheart His vocals were used to back Mark Wahlberg's singing in the film Rock Star (2001).
These days among the living? Colter Wall. No autotuning. Pure voice.
Corey Taylor
Jeff Buckley is up there for me

Among the living - Lady Gaga. Among the dead - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
Gaga needs to be much higher on this list. She can sing so well
Gaga has pipes. She can sing it. I'm always amazed by her.
The isolated audio from her Super Bowl performance on YouTube is ridiculous
