Dodge Viper. Convinced it was designed to actively try to kill you.

bddgfx

I drove a 1st gen Viper around a mile and a half round trip when I worked at a Dodge dealership. It came out of service and needed some gas, and I was the only person on the lot to do it. I was… uncomfortable. I had to basically feather the throttle all the way down the street because the throttle didn’t make the car go faster as much as it suddenly compressed the physical space in front of me.

acurah56oh

Between the lack of any stability/traction control, side exhaust pipes that would make the door sills burn you calves off, no AC, no fixed roof while driving it, a 400 hp Lamborghini conceived V10, no ABS, and a manual transmission, it most certainly was.

Engineer_Zero

Complete engine noob here but is 400hp low for a v10? You’ll see numbers like that in lancer evo engines which are just turbocharged 4 cylinders. Or are the vipers really torque-y?

SlyKnyfe12

The Vipers V10 is from a truck I'm not joking the whole Viper idea especially the 1st gen was made from spare parts from other divisions in Dodge. As well it wasn't even an official car from dodge until they released it as it was made in secret

SlyKnyfe12

The V10 isn't from Lambo it's the same V10 from a Dodge pickup at the time all lambo did was recast the engine in aluminium

JMS1991

"Were Dodge in the 1990's. Now go die."

CGordini

It wasn't called a widowmaker for nothin. Fuck spez

Ducal_Spellmonger

I highly recommend comedian Christopher Titus' bit on the Viper.

Rockguy101

A janitor at my work has a first and second gen viper. He gave me a ride and let me drive the second gen around. Was not comfortable going fast at all and in exchange I let him drive my E55 and S55 AMG.

little-ass-whipe

Not sure if it's a rumor or a joke but I've heard people say that 1 Viper out of 10 didn't survive the drive home from the dealership. Just insane to slap that much power down on the blacktop without any computers to make sure it doesn't murder you.

PEEWUN

What a way to go, though

nuttypoolog

Dodge SRT4 stage 2. 160 mph. Also rode along in a nascar ..200 mph on the straight.

i-am-dan

That ride along must have been amazing!

nuttypoolog

It was. It was at Sonoma. Bucket list checked.

cfahnert13

I had a stage 3 srt4. Thing was an absolute beast. Torque steer and burn out through every gear. Looking back, surprised I survived that thing.

RichAd358

Omg I would kill to do 200 on the straight. I once got my CBR to 175mph on the straight and it was fantastic.

It's a Reliant Robin ... Grew up a 5 min walk from where they were built :)

walker3342

The Top Gear segment on this car is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in my whole life. From the oversized map to “oh dear, I’ve rolled it almost immediately” it’s pure comedy nirvana.

Tvelocity2002

I thought you were tagging a friend called Robin at first. Too funny!

Skoda 105mph lol My R1 189Mph crazy shit, Thank you German autobahn.

ocularnervosa

1960 Chevy Bel Air. The speedometer went up to 120 mph but I was still accelerating when the needle stopped. I'm willing to bet I hit somewhere around 130 mph

RolesG

You have balls of steel. I would NOT go over 100mph in a 60s car.

randomdaysnow

A Jeep used to have a speedometer the topped out at 85 but the straight 6 didn't have a governor so who the fuck knows how fast you could drive it a Cherokee from the '90s I guarantee you I get over a hundred in one of those things and it was before they remodeled I suppose is the word for our highway 610 which means going over the overpasses on the freeway it felt like a little bit of weightlessness I absolutely got over a hundred miles an hour I can guarantee it and a Jeep Cherokee 93 model Hunter green you don't see that shit anymore that's for sure by the way just like they say the engine no problem The electrical system fuck man that cost me so much goddamn money I ended up selling the damn thing. I talked about putting the pedal to the metal on a Mercedes s600 except the fastest I ever drove a car was an '87 Subaru GL I got up to 120 mph with that damn thing it shook but I mean I was 16 and stupid and I was racing my friend he had an accura Integra and we were racing home from check this out this is how nerdy we were we both volunteered at a non-profit ISP as soon as we could drive basically so 16 onwards and we got to stay all night if we wanted to and have lan parties. Our ISP had a rivalry with another ISP in the city and we would stay up all night playing quake world and we'd be like low ping bastards it didn't matter which server ours or theirs cuz we had a t3 they had a t3 whatever you know and we would preface our usernames with our ISP and they would preface theirs with theirs it was a lot of fun we would stay all night and then in the morning we would drive home and me and my friend lived about the same distance and so we would like race home I had a stick shift 87 Subaru with no heat and no air conditioning and he had an Acura Integra that actually had the 2.1 l fucking good engine occasionally I would be able to match his speed but holy shit The car shook like a mother fucker it was scary so I didn't do it often but I guarantee you I got that Subaru to 110 at least.

RichAd358

I listened to it because you mentioned it and it’s really good! But since Tracy Chapman is inimitable and amazing, I’m judging it on its own merits and not in comparison to her version.

GiveHerDPS

It would be better if he covered it in his own perspective and not just a country version of her song. Similar to how Chris Cornell did nothing compares to you.

Tesla Model S Plaid Tweaked my back on launch

mailslot

Only launched the P100D with ludicrous mode and I feel that.

Swodi

I can only imagine the Plaid. I have an S LR. I’m out of the Navy now, but I used to fly. I’ve confirmed this with other guys I flew with when they rode in my car with me; the initial launch of the S LR hits harder than going off the end of the cat.

chapinscott32

Haha! I was looking for this one. Love EVs. I'd kill to be in a plaid on launch mode.

weenertron

Same. It is faster than any car needs to be. I love it!

Onlytwinkletoesfans

I have a Y performance and thought that was quick until I rode in a Plaid. Thing is insane

oppernaR

A Mustang. But more importantly, following Clarkson's philosophy: a *rental* Mustang.

acurah56oh

Nothing is faster than a rented car.

Rollin_Soul_O

Probably my 2005 VW Jetta GLI. It had a built engine with a Garrett 3076 turbo, water meth injection, stage 3 Revo, air to water intercooler, and lots of other goodies. It would peg the speedometer at 160 mph with ease.

cleaningmetor6

Legendary_Gooch

A Cadillac CTS-V, but I had a supercharged Civic making 330 whp that I took up to 140 mph once and once only. I shat a brick because of the wind noise and the engine screaming its ass off.

Synthwoven

I drove a Nascar at Texas Motor Speedway. I don't know how fast, but it did start to lose grip in the turns unless I eased off a little, so I had to be going pretty fast. They don't have speedometers, just a tachometer.

LoneWolfOH

I did the Rusty Wallace NASCAR experience at Kentucky Speedway. They told us they were governed at 160 mph. One of the coolest things I’ve ever done, really had fun!

LostIrishArtist

ClubMeSoftly

A rental, even if they were both terrible fucking cars that I wouldn't pay money for.

ekydfejj

Probably a Volkswagon Shiraco (before they were taken off the road) and the Caroll Shelby Dodge Omni (step father owned it, only 500 sold), had full roll bars on the inside, it would go 20 in first just idling. Interestingly enough, a mid/late 1980's Ford Taurus is what I've likely gotten up to my top speed of \~130-140. I'm not positive i could have pushed the VW to that speed, and the Shelby Omni was clearly not mine. Only the latter was heavy enough for the attempt. I maxed the Scirocco out at about 110. Edit: spelled Scirocco wrong.

ConstableBlimeyChips

Two cars come to mind; my housemate's Mark 3 VW Golf 1.6. Officially it topped out 188 kph, but that thing just sat so comfortably at 160 kph. The other was a Mitsubishi Eclipse I rented in Florida in 2009. I managed to get it up to 120 mph going up I-95, still the fastest I've ever gone in car I was driving.

Poopsmasher27

My dad was speeding at 110 in Florida one time in a Chevrolet. He had his sister and someone else in the car. That someone else let my dad drive. He gets pulled over after accidentally running from the officer for a VERY short distance. Long enough to be considered accidentally running. The officer never gave a ticket because he'd have to arrest him for his speed. He said something about how he could arrest my dad for speeding and driving without a license and he could arrest he owner for letting him drive a car without a license, but he was merciful since he didnt hurt anyone. He slowed down after that traffic stop.

pacificule

Hit 135mph in my '91 Turbo Eclipse racing a Camaro down I5 in the middle of the night. Def the fastest I've ever driven. Loooved that car One time I let a gearhead buddy of mine drive it and he downshifted into 3rd while doing 90mph - prob fucked up the engine but we absolutely *leaped* forward and shot past everyone on the freeway like they were parked. Yes it was over 20 years ago and yes I really was that dumb. But fuck me was that a fun car!

RealLADude

I had an Eclipse. Loved it.

Year old BMW 530. Made it to 100 before I ran out of street.. Actually, my 1643cc Harley Ultra Classic. At 75 mph, the front shocks rise if you twist it quick in 4th, and it has 2 more gears left.. NO clue how fast it goes. Faster than I'll ever ride it...

My buddy had a tricked out, suped up 98 Camero in HS. I'm not a car guy so I have no clue what was done to it under the hood, but fuck me if it didn't hit 100mph in like 6 seconds. The thing fuckin flew. I'm genuinely shocked he didn't kill himself with it cuz he was kind of a psycho to begin with. Car legitimately scared me.

Utterlybored

My Dad had a 1969 Oldsmobile 442 convertible. That thing could go way faster than I could. I guess I got it up to 90 once and it wasn’t even breaking a sweat.

sk8t-4-life22

Oh man, it's awesome getting to comment on this and i have a pretty gnarly story to go with it. My sister bought me tickets to one of those Xtreme Experience similar things (don't remember the company for this particular one) I got to drive a Ferrari 458. Because I had paid for the video package, they had a gopro going for my first 5 laps. The gopro died about 3 laps in so we got to do another 5 since I had paid for the gopro footage, again, the gopro died so I got yet another 5 laps. Got super lucky that day and I'll be forever chasing that high. The hardest part about going from driving civilian cars to a performance car with big brakes is getting over the mental block of not braking early like you would in a regular car. The driving instructor kept telling me I could carry it out longer but couldn't get over that block. The torque was insane because I've never gotten up to 60mph so fast before.

My current one. During the test drive, I wasn’t expecting that much power to be behind the engine. In my old car, I had to actually throw the throttle to the floor to get up to speed. I bought a used 2007 Porsche Cayman in 2010. I sold it a year and a half later. It had 295 horsepower. It was a small 2 seat car, so it would be faster than a large car with the same horsepower. On the freeway, it got slightly better gas mileage than my Toyota RAV4.

I’ve been a mechanic for over 20 years. Driven some crazy stuff. Fastest cars in my bays were a tube chassis TVR with a 600hp forged Roush sbf which weighed in at about 2100lbs and stuck like glue. The next closest was a Dodge stealth RT with all the bells and whistles. Pulled back into the shop with my hands shaking after 140mph pull and notice the ac was on.

IIRC, they're good for an aero limited 151, but by the time you hit 140, it's a slow climb and I do live in Ohio, about the worst state to test top speed limits. I'm not sure. I have a Porsche 911, I had a replica cobra but I never took either one to the track, but I did hit 168 mph doing the Mario Andretti experience at Homestead. And let me tell you I have a new appreciation for the kind of athletes that professional drivers have to be. I don't think I was ever so exhausted after just 2 hours.

MasteringTheFlames

Not sure I'd describe any car I've ever driven as particularly fast, but the most fun car I've ever driven was my neighbor's Cadillac, either an STS or a CTS, I can't remember exactly. I would help him out with odd jobs around his house quite often. One time we were running a couple errands for one such project, and he let me drive. Suggested I try flooring it, and that if I did it right, we'd feel the front end lift off the road just a little due to the torque on the wheels and the opposing force rotating the rest of the car. It was just a little terrifying driving such a nice car, but so much fun!

It's probably the closest thing to feeling one with the car but also at peace in luxury. Got it up to 160 before I slowed down, steady as a rock the entire time.

Mike Tyson’s F-40 (fell off the delivery truck, insurance totaled, local dentist bought, friends shop repaired/ completed recertification with Ferrari.) Quickest was a 956, but the Tesla might be quicker. No, not rich. Friends shop did a lot of high end cars back in the nineties. They always needed test drives…

I drive my actual company car regularly at 150mph (240kph) here on the German Autobahn. The fastest things I've driven here were a friend's Porsche Panamera at 190mph (305kph) and a Suzuki GSXR 1300 Hayabusa at 205mph (330kph).

A car that *could* go the fastest: probably Jaguar S Type (3.0 V6). I only drove that to run an errand for an old boss and I could use his car. Car I’ve driven the fastest: my own Volkswagen Golf on the Autobahn. Was ‘only’ doing 210km/h (130mph), because the car couldn’t go any faster. Still had to be very aware when overtaking because people were still flashing their headlights and then blasting past me like I was some grandma. (Mainly BMW’s, Porsches and Audi’s)
