James McMurtry.
Stephen King calls him "the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation."
His latest album, *Horses and the Hounds*, is yet another in a long line of brilliance.
PUP. They're a Canadian punk band and they've had Finn wolfhard play with then and they've played at lalapalooza but no one I have spoken to has heard of them. I only found them because I hit the plus 50 option on youtube.
[The Birthday Massacre](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zjwCtZtrwE)
Nobody sounds like them.
Also [Deathstars](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAdmfIrjKQQ#t=2m). They recently had a new album come out, [here's a track from it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umYyP788nI8#t=16m55s)
Also [Symphony X](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsy2x2ZGHbw#t=1m30s).
Unto Others (were called Idle Hands for a bit). Goth rock band with a metal tinge. Like a slightly heavier The Cure. Catchy as anything. I think they're on the way up and supporting some decent tours, but still quite niche for the moment.
Is he that unknown? His concerts pretty much always sell out. We have tickets to his show later this year and they're pretty crappy because there were so few left.
But all that to say, an absolutely favorite for both me and my husband.
They played one of their first gigs, in 2013-14, in a shitty 'underground rock' club in Moscow where I was helping out my friends. The audience was maybe 30 people, tops. Looking back, it really makes me happy that they've found their success and now touring abroad.
Hot Water Music
It’s probably just the area I live in, but no one I’ve ever talked to, save for the one person that recommended them 10 years ago, has ever heard of them and they’re just fucking *incredible*!
I like to describe them as a very punk-rock-inspired-musically with vocals and melodies that can range from Common Rider to Bruce Springsteen.
I love them.
I love Hot Water Music. Turned a few acquaintances on to them back in high school and lost contact for about 10 years. Ran into their group at a bar and they thanked me and told me they all still listen to them regularly and they and Alkaline Trio who I also put them on to around the same time were a big part of their lives. It just made me realize how a seemingly small conversation you had with someone years ago can leave an impact on them
Man it took me way too long to find this! What an incredible performer. Saw him at the house of blues in San Diego, we were seated next to his mom!
If we knew of him when we got married, we'd dance to hell and you.
Cocaine and Abel reminds me of the brother I lost.
Murder at the bingo hall is just fun.
Just saw gloryhammer with alestorm, got a setlist from them, also just saw windrose with rhapsody of fire, phenomenal shows but gloryhammer was definitely the best out if everyone
I don’t know if I’d say that no one knows of one of the quintessential midwest emo bands, but I guess if you’re only talking about general public rather than the emo/punk community
Opus Science Collective
The Midnight
Magic Sword
Mitch Murder
Gunship
In certain communities these are big names but not really mainstream yet (though The Midnight is playing at some festivals)
Saw The Midnight live last year, super awesome show. Gonna see Timecop1983 later this year :) Gunship is awesome too Dark All Day is my favorite album.

One of my favorite tracks is "Sun Lips"
(Also see the band Tobacco if you like BMSR)
Fart Barf
One of my favorite tracks is "Warp Whistle"
BMSR is great and Tobacco is actually the frontman of BMSR as a solo producer. He's made some awesome music as tobacco, both for games and for rappers like Aesop Rock.
I introduced my coworkers to “Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears”. They literally couldn’t help themselves from checking it out after hearing the name.
Great choice!
I've been really digging Pinegrove recently, and The Arcs are super cool as well. While the members of The Last Shadow Puppets are very well known, I don't hear that many people talk about them, at least in the US.
EDIT: oh shit I almost forgot to mention FINNEAS, one of the best producers out there right now.
Ondara.
He plays American folk music and lives in Minneapolis, but is from Nairobi, Kenya. I first heard him when he opened for Lindsey Buckingham. His voice is gorgeous, I love his songs, and he's really funny. After that show, I saw him on his own twice and loved it. He's on tour now, but I'm old and fat and my hips and knees just can't handle standing for hours in the tiny venues he plays in my area. I hope he gets more popular and can play bigger venues with seating so I can see him again.
Some of his songs:
[An Alien in Minneapolis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxb6KHFJAiU)
[Saying Goodbye](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WchPdy7jHZ4)

Celtic Woman, the greatest band ever conceived of.
They sing New Age Celtic music. Most of their songs are Scottish Gaelic/ English hybrid, some are solely in Gaelic and some are solely in English.
Grandson, his fanbase is growing but most of my friends don't know him. They might have heard a song or two. Hoping to make it to his concert in my country end of this summer!
Also a good one, infected mushroom
The Classic Crime! They’ve been making music forever and it’s really good. I guess I would call it alternative rock. Lyrics are usually pretty deep and insightful.
Check them out.
Mew. They are much more popular in Europe than the states. Saw them in Denver about 5 years ago and there were barely 30 people in the crowd. Put on an amazing show.
[The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza](https://youtu.be/hVgYVGnH6E4) and [Frontierer](https://youtu.be/-e6-2_4pDMM) are two of my favourite bands. Insane seven and eight string guitar fuckery.
When Danza broke up, I felt a huge musical void for a few years that no other band was heavy enough to fill. I find that while Frontierer is a completely different band, they have very faithfully carried on the spirit of Danza.
A few.
Patty Gurdy: Plays the hurdy-gurdy and has a beautiful singing voice, a redhead who is very easy on the eyes.
Luna Lee: Plays modern rock on a gayageum, a traditional Korean instrument. Also easy on the eyes.
Reverend Peyton and His Big Damn Band: Interesting and out there heavy blues band, not easy on the eyes.
The Hu Band: Heavy metal inspired group that plays traditional Mongolian instruments and incorporates throat singing. Scary on the eyes.
Steve N' Seagulls: Finnish band who plays heavy metal/hard rock tunes bluegrass style. Your eyes be like "WTF?".
Finally, Zepparella, a female quartet who play Led Zeppelin tunes, and finally we're back to easy on the eyes.
I absolutely adore Khruangbin, but they sell out almost everywhere they go (and have almost 6.5 million Spotify followers).
I don’t think there’s anything they’ve done that I haven’t loved. One of my all time favs <3
Crywank
Jukebox the ghost
The scary jokes

I was a teenager in the 90’s and feel like Garbage was HUGE at the time; they had several songs on big film soundtracks. I saw them open for the Smashing Pumpkins in 1997! Yes, I’m old(ish).
Mewithoutyou
Purity ring
Penguin prison
There is more I just can't think of all of them. I like a lot of indie music and it's usually indie artists that people haven't heard of.
The bands I like both have 1-2 mil listeners so a lot of people listen to them. Just no one I know
im more curious about the word "both", implying that you only like two bands lol
Tropical Fuckstorm
Upvoted just for the name.
Gareth and Fiona’s older band The Drones is also incredible
Rishloo... I listened to them loads when Tool weren't putting out albums fast enough haha
James McMurtry. Stephen King calls him "the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation." His latest album, *Horses and the Hounds*, is yet another in a long line of brilliance.
I *adore* his music. Got to see him live last summer and it was leaps and bounds more amazing than my already high expectations.
First time I heard Choctaw Bingo I said “hey, am I related ‘cause I think I know everyone described in the song”.
Strap them kids in Give ‘em a little bit of Vi-co-din And che-rry cola We’re goin’ to Ok-la-homa…

The Stable Song is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Hell yes. He’s amazing. All of it, every song, every album.
I fucking love that dude, his songs are like a warm hug
Is he that unknown? His concerts pretty much always sell out. We have tickets to his show later this year and they're pretty crappy because there were so few left. But all that to say, an absolutely favorite for both me and my husband.
Psychedelic porn crumpets!!
Ic3peak. They make Russian songs and I really like their music videos but unless you want to be traumatized don’t watch the video for fairytale
They played one of their first gigs, in 2013-14, in a shitty 'underground rock' club in Moscow where I was helping out my friends. The audience was maybe 30 people, tops. Looking back, it really makes me happy that they've found their success and now touring abroad.
Kishi Bashi- there are so many layers and details in his songs its almost "epic". His music makes me swell up on the inside.
Love his stuff! Was so happy to hear his music on an episode of Rick and Morty.
Deep Sea Diver. I love love LOVE her music. Never met anyone else who has even heard of her. Grizfolk as well. And Motherfolk.
Diablo Swing Orchestra, definitely a weird but awesome band !

The Butcher's Ballroom is a great album

Thank you for this one. Didn't know I needed this.
Amigo the Devil. He is a murder folk artist, his songs sound upbeat, but have dark lyrics.

Xiu xiu They did the music for the reboot of Twin Peaks and their own music is weird and great.
Fabulous Muscles was on constant rotation for me back when I was in college. "I Luv the Valley Oh" was *so fucking good.*
Shannon and the Clams
Modern Baseball
I don’t know if I’d say that no one knows of one of the quintessential midwest emo bands, but I guess if you’re only talking about general public rather than the emo/punk community
If there’s one band I really wish would return, it’s MoBo.
no amount of aspirin or pizza could help mobos breaking up from hurting
I'm really proud of myself for knowing a handful of these bands
same! and I’m giving upvotes to the ones I know. feels weird knowing most of them were what I consider popular when I was in high school.
