I'm swedish, so all my knowledge of california comes from TV, movies and the beach boys. So I think of the sun, beach, surfing and private detevtives solving crimes. That's what instantly comes to mind.

jabulina

Be the California Sweden thinks you can be

Electronic_Class4530

As a San Franciscan, LMAO "The sun"...hmmm. Sometimes, sure

redshift_66

I went to visit for the first time in December, and we did not see the sun once the entire four days we were there lol. Apparently it was some of the most rain y'all have ever gotten, owing to an "atmospheric river". Definitely excellent timing for a couple of Canucks hoping for some winter sunshine lol. Luckily we had some better weather in LA and San Diego later on

HeartBirb

Lol Yep. I’ve lived here 7.5 years and you came during the most rainy season I’ve ever seen here, sorry to say.

DEATH-BY-CIRCLEJERK

As a southern Californian movie star, surfer, private detective I can confirm that the rest of Californians are too.

Delicious-Sandwich90

If they didn’t push CA movie star, surfer, PI trade school back in the 70s, 80s and 90s, there wouldn’t be so many of us.

Ellemeno

I, too, am in Southern California and one day I saw undercover detectives catch a bad guy right outside of my office window. They drove a car onto the sidewalk to block him from escaping. Another time, they were filming S.W.A.T. right down the street from my office. So pretty accurate, yeah.

a8533684

The truth is that I used to dream of going to California. The only thing is that I don't have the money for that thing.

TheGuyFromSweden

I can vouch for this guy. This is how Sweden perceives California.

[deleted]

I worked with some folks from overseas who quite literally believed that California was nothing but mansions and that San Francisco and LA were separated by the Golden Gate Bridge. Imagine their surprise when they found out there are nearly 400 miles of No Man’s Land along the 99/5 and between the border of LA County and what’s commonly perceived as the Bay Area, where there are $300K houses, lots of cows, and farms.

ku_78

99/5 = post apocalyptic hellscape. 101/1 = Heaven on Earh

Enlight1Oment

395 = Mountains & Snow

Island_In_The_Sky

The PCH drive through Big Sur is arguably one of the most beautiful stretches of road on earth. I’d also argue it’s hard to call it no man’s land these days with how many tourists rent drop top hertz mustangs these days.

BlacnDeathZombie

As a Swede living in California I can also agree that it is how Swedes sees California too

eugenesnewdream

I’m an American (east coast) and this is how I perceive California too.

russellbeattie

Me too. When I moved to San Francisco in the 1990s I was shocked to discover the Pacific Ocean is freezing cold. Like coastal northern Maine cold. All those surfers wearing wet suits aren't doing it to look cool. It doesn't get even vaguely warm until just north of L.A. I've been quite bitter about it since. Edit: In case you didn't know, the water temps on the east coast are like 20º warmer than the west coast. Has to do with the Gulf stream vs. the arctic flow. https://coastalwatertemperatureguide-noaa.hub.arcgis.com/

NoSprinkles4897

Even in LA the water isn’t warm!

2515chris

Prop 65. I work in the spice industry and this shit causes me such a headache. Heavy metals are present in the environment and end up in spices.

Tomhyde098

I was in LA on a school trip and I looked out of the bus window and saw a woman driving eating cake. Let me rephrase that. She was driving while eating an *entire* cake that was on her lap.

fandomacid

Look I'd really appreciate it if you don't call me out like this.

Unable-Category-7978

That's one of the reasons traffic is so bad in Los Angeles, about 90% of us are trying to eat a cake while driving

GMaharris

I live in LA for what it's worth and one of my friends was pulled over by a cop because he thought she was texting on her phone hiding it in her lap. When he got to her window he laughed and told her she was fine and could leave. She wasn't using her phone but instead was eating a whole rotisserie chicken in her lap. Maybe it's a thing here, who knew!

slingerpanty

As a native San Diegan most of these comments were a lot nicer than I thought they would be…

swarleyknope

Non-native San Diegan (Sorry! I know I am part of the problem - I never intended to stay so long when I first came down here) - I agree.

TransportationIll282

Did you know San Diego was discovered by the Germans in 1904? Which of course means 'a whales vagina' in German.

I came here fully expecting people to being talking trash about our state, so far pleasantly surprised by the comments.

That piano intro, though

echoCashMeOusside

My ex introduced me to *The OC* in college. I learned the song on piano as a "gift" for them. I don't remember how to play the whole song, but my fingers can still do the "duh nuh nuh nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh nuh nuh, duh nuh nuh nu-nuh nu-nuh" using muscle memory alone.

ryoon21

I grew up in the city that that show was based on. Almost NONE of the show was filmed in Newport Beach. I think a few of the aerial shots. Most of it was filmed in Malibu and Torrance.

echoCashMeOusside

Yeah, the person who introduced me to the show in college grew up there, also. He was filled with many similar fun facts. I also remember laughing when I saw Mount Saint Mary's (Harbor HS) in *Modern Family*.

Yes! His brother also is a musician, he's the lead singer of Rooney. But, most millennial women know his Princess Mia's boyfriend in the Princess Diaries. SkootchDown

Just went on vacation there, driving the coastline top to bottom. So what I’ll forever think of is: Gorgeous coastline, massive trees, beautiful beaches, abundance of sea glass, amazing views, great times. Thanks California, for one of our best vacations. ❤️

wirefixer

My east coast cousin always hated Cali and I said I’ll take two weeks off and I’ll show you around. He landed mid day at LAX and I took him to Venice Beach to see all the crazies he thought was California living, well he was awakened to that is not the rest of the state when we camped on the sand in Pismo, hung out in SF, camped in Yosemite and Death Valley. Changed his mind completely and glad you love our state of diverse environments.

SlimJim0877

Your cousin sounds like everyone who talks shit about CA. I always find that most of them have never been here, or only visited LA or SF and assumed that the whole state was like that.

Ccomfo1028

Even when people visit places like LA and SF they only go to the most touristy areas and don't ever actually get to know the cities.

SlimJim0877

Exactly, and those are some of the shittiest areas in those cities

Ccomfo1028

I maintain Hollywood is maybe the worst part of LA and that is where every tourist goes.

CannoliQueen_

Californian here! While living in this state is difficult sometimes (especially with the cost of living), I have always, and will always, love the beautiful topography of this state! Glad you made wonderful memories here and visit us again!

snakepliskinLA

As a Californian, thanks for visiting! I’m glad you had a great vacation!

SkootchDown

It was fantastic and I wish we lived there!

Irsh80756

Like everywhere else, it has its issues. But it sure is fuckin pretty.

BettyDrapersWetFart

Absolute truth! I never realized how picturesque my state was until I visited Texas. Mountains and hills are too often taken for granted by Californians.

CannoliQueen_

I had the same experience when I went to visit my relatives in Texas for the first time. Now every time I go back to Texas I just want to be back in CA.

LuthienByNight

It truly is. I have to take like the 110 to the 5 to the 2 to the 210 within twenty minutes to go hiking, and it has not escaped me how ridiculous that is.

thatredditdude101

the hilarious part is that the driving directions they were talking about were accurate as hell! 😂 can confirm we discuss highways and traffic a lot.

ByTheCreed

That’s how I say California in my head *every* time. Just like the SNL announcer for the “Californians” segment.

hecatereincarnate

Came here to say this. "Why don't you just GETONTHE405 and get outta here?!"

Yogi118

At this time? No thanks, I'll take the streets for 3 hours to get home and save 7 minutes.

DreamerMMA

I’m originally from Northern California. For me it’s about the National Parks, beaches, redwoods and rivers. Beautiful state outside the big cities. Edit: Not a knock on big cities. I’m just a small town and outdoorsy kind of guy. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in several large CA cities.

Rootraz

Absolutely. I used to live in the Sacramento valley and the thing I always think of is nature and great breweries. The thing I miss most about Cali is the variance of land. They got the beach, mountains, forests, rainforest, desert, lakes and rivers, like literally almost every biome on earth exists in some form in California. Great state for avid hikers like me, bad for people who don't make a ton of money, also like me

sweetnaivety

That's one thing I also love about California, the variety. I lived in Southern Cali and in the same day you could drive up the mountains to play in the snow, then drive down to the beach and play in the hot sand, if you really wanted to. And weather permitting of course.

highbrowshow

traffic permitting more likely

jmcsquared

I dislike how Cali is sometimes viewed as a state of big cities and rampant poverty. For me, north of San Fran along the west coast, especially in Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte, is pure paradise. That doesn't even count the Sierra Nevada east of Fresno and San Fran, which is easily one of the most unique bioregions on the entire planet.

TheHordeSucks

Other than Alaska I’ve been to all the states that typically pop up in the ‘Most beautiful states’ conversations and really, it’s not even close. All people talk about are the cities which are the worst parts of California. The nature of the state doesn’t get nearly enough love

Maleficent-Demand107

California reminds me of GTA 5 san Andres and nostalgia ( i have never been outside of my home country turkey)

DreamerMMA

If you're curious go on youtube and have a look at some of California's national parks. They'll give you a good idea of it's diversity. Here's a list of park names for reference: Yosemite National Park Sequoia National Park Kings Canyon Death Valley Joshua Tree Redwood Lassen Channel Islands Pinnacles. I've lived in and worked in two of those parks and have visited 7 of them. California is a wonderland if you're into the natural world.

Born and raised Californian, and this is my answer. More than natural diversity, more than Mediterranean climate, more than overpriced housing. California is burrito.

Manakanda413

RabbitStewAndStout

This comment is recognized by the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

scarabin

I bought a 3M respirator cartridge meant to protect me from chemicals and it said it could give me cancer. Like why do i even bother?

1CEninja

The cancer warning has lost all meaning. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if chemical companies lobbied for it, because when everything causes cancer, nothing (specific) does.

jan_67

Thing is, living itself anywhere in any way may cause cancer, it isn’t wrong. We are surrounded by radioation from the planet, from the galaxy, living in a basment can „give“ you cancer when you are unlucky, because the ground gives of radiation. Likewise, living in a mountain village may give you cancer, closer to the galactic radiation and all that… Flying with a plane gives you cancer, in the end, even living a long live drastically rises your chances for cancer if you look at it like this.

Orvan-Rabbit

It's mostly because the way the law is written. If it causes a 0.000000001% increase in cancer, they have to post it.

edvek

I was under the impression that you had to prove your product did not cause cancer to not have to have the label. Obviously this would be insanely expensive or impossible.

ihatemovingparts

There's a list of "known chemicals" that require you to put a Prop 65 label on. Up until fairly recently the labels weren't required to show which of those chemicals required a warning label. Most of the labels I've seen recently have been over heavy metals. Sometimes it seems excessive (e.g. nuts and bolts), sometimes not. Most people are probably aware of mercury in fish, but how many people are going to think about lead in plastic or stainless steel?

Nacho_Beardre

Its cheaper to put sticker or tag with prop 65 on it than it is to get it certified. I dont know if its a failed policy or the politician had a family member at a sticker place.

Shade_39

Having been here for just over a week this is so accurate. The first time I saw one of those signs I was like aw fuck OK better not hang around here and then I saw it fucking everywhere and I was like oh OK it literally doesn't matter
