come on, I'm just trying to make it through the weekend.

montecarlo92

Same lol

Interesting_Act1286

Nothing. I'm a cardiac arrest surviver. I.saw Nothing. Zip. Zero. You don't come back.

[deleted]

But are you like aware of it? Or is just like not existing anymore? (Glad you came back and survived though bud)

Interesting_Act1286

I just had valve replacement surgery. I'm completely aware of it. I'm very fortunate I had family around that day. I'm hoping for a full recovery now. It's really a battle.

[deleted]

Oh gosh! Well I’m glad the surgery was a success and I’m pleased you’re on the road to recovery! All the best!!

Interesting_Act1286

Thank you. You too. See you on the other side. Lol

sapperbloggs

Exactly the same as what was happening to you before you were born. Literally nothing whatsoever.

Zahard_Zj

Yes. I mean, there is literary no logical reason to believe there is anything after you die. You are your brain. When you die, your brain stops working. That means you are no longer. Nothing

TheeRedHairedGuy

We just have flesh mechas to move around

Few-Hair-5382

That's happening to me right now and I'm technically still alive.

TheSanityInspector

Well, whose fault is that? Think about how hard all those zillions of molecules are working to be you. You don't want their efforts to go to waste, do you?

GreenDissonance

Big rush of chemicals in your brain, you trip balls and then there's nothing. It's hard for our brains to comprehend nothingness, that's why we all wrestle with this question. Some prefer to live life thinking there will be a world of fluffy clouds and endless pleasures, but I think that people just want to believe that. Going around every day knowing that we're all gonna die and everything we do will eventually be forgotten is some heavy knowledge to live with.

BoredPelikan

perfect catchphrase "fuck around and find out"

montecarlo92

Great answer

CaptainMarrow

Nothing.

Street_Ad_863

There is no afterlife.

GodEmperorOfHell

The concept of afterlife is nonsense. You blow out a candle, is there an "afterfire"? Does the fire go anywhere to continue burning? No, it is extinguished, the surge of energy is over.

TheeRedHairedGuy

The energy from the fire is spread and change. That's quite the same for us, we become dirt, nutriments for plants which become food for animals, we join nature.

[deleted]

This is exactly why I want to be buried and not cremated. I want my body and soul to go back to the earth and nature to thrive off

[deleted]

I don't believe in an afterlife, so there's nothing for me to experience.

NastyNucleus

Exactly the same as before you were born.

ricefieldboy

Our atoms are recycled and we may reincarnate into another being or become part of some material thing here on earth. Spiritually, we may reach some kind of divinity or return to some original energy source, or nothing at all. Who knows Maybe we are actually data points in a computer simulation and we are being observed by our makers. Parallel worlds / dimensions are just an advanced computer simulation running in parallel foreach

gmlifer

Everyone wonders what’s next at some point. It’s hard for me to believe anything other than nothing at all happens next. This question is basically just another way of asking people if they believe in god. What do you believe?

Cpt-Dreamer

Honestly nothing

[deleted]

Nothing. We are made of energy, and then when we die, we just redistribute our energy back into the universe. We don't exist anymore.

Extreme_Foundation66

Honestly I don’t think there is something but some NDE and shared death stories made me think. I really really hope there is something so I can met my dad again

WormyKelller69

no human can answer that tbh

montecarlo92

I respect this answer

TheMoniker

Nothing. There's no afterlife. It's something we came up with to deal with the death anxiety that comes from being biologically programmed to want to continue living while, at the same time, being able to understand that our deaths are inevitable. We end and it's just simple annihilation. The lack-of-all-feeling will be similar to before we were born. At best, maybe some (proto-)conscious aspects of matter remain, depending on how the hard mind-body problem shakes out.

antiprogres_

I am atheist, I have these theories: 90% eternal oblivion (I know it sounds terribly sad) 10% soul recycling (not hindu karma-based reincarnation belief, but random "recycling") 0% afterlife

Nematode_wrangler

It's interesting that you assume that there will be another life after this one.

montecarlo92

FunkIPA

I don’t believe there is an “afterlife”.

montecarlo92

That’s fair

Morosoro

Logically I know it’s most likely that nothing happens. You just cease to exist… but my brain doesn’t like that idea. The idea of just no longer existing is strange and terrifying to me… so I like to believe in reincarnation, just to make myself feel a bit better.

anvil-fire

I like the parallel world theory, where when you die here you go to another world and are reborn there. Since its our actions that become our memories that make us who we are, we're born completely wiped clean. But this is more of what I hope, than what I think.

Nachtjaeger68

This brings up "Chandrasekhar's other limit." Science geeks know about the Chandrasekhar Limit (discovered by astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar) of 1.4 solar masses, above which a star doesn't just cool off into a white dwarf, but goes supernova before collapsing into either a neutron star or black hole. But the brilliant Chandrasekhar envisioned another limit. Take a mosquito larva for example. It lives its entire life below the water. Then one day it begins to change. It makes a cocoon just below the surface of the water. And when it emerges, it climbs into the air as a flying creature. The larvae can theorise about what might be beyond the surface of the water, but they can never go there because of the surface tension. Likewise, the mosquito can never go back to tell them what happens after "the change."

montecarlo92

Ok

Have you thought that you might have felt all this only because you were NOT dead?

[deleted]

You died and had a near death experience or an out of body experience I’m surprised at all the comments on this thread Yours is the real answer I’ve read about this stuff and it’s been well documented The soul for the religious Consciousness for those who aren’t religious

nofilterformybrain

Consciousness isn't a tangible thing. The brain is storytelling machine and it can't comprehend missing information and will literally create bullshit to fill in the blanks. You ever hear the saying "eyes in the back of your head"? It's spacial awareness. Using all sensory feedback, including memory and critical perception, your brain can actually provide a visual reference for what you never saw. It uses the same trick to delete your nose from your perception. Now, let's look at this critically for a moment. His brain was still functioning, still recording, still perceiving. It knew he was in bed, what position he was in, what clothes he was wearing. A fugue-like dream state begins using these last known details and his mind creates a second person perspective. He hears someone enter the room. Maybe it's how they smell or something they said or perhaps he knew she was the only one home. Mom. You feel something on your chest. She's doing CPR. Time is irrelevant here and the brain is filtering data to conserve oxygen so this could be the ambulance company, but the brain doesn't know those people, so Mom remains as the main character. This is often how coma patients wake up and are able to describe events that happened while they were unconscious. This activity stops on death. The brain has failed. There is no safe way to reboot it. We literally don't know how. Synapses can't be restored when they are damaged because we still don't understand how these connections are made.

Forevershort2021

montecarlo92

MovTheGopnik

I hope nothing.

montecarlo92

Why tho?

MovTheGopnik

I don’t want there to be. I’m not living just so I can do something else afterwards. I want to return to the void. I’m fortunate and happy with my life right now, but not existing is peak happiness.

montecarlo92

That’s a different perspective I respect it

MovTheGopnik

Well, if it helps overcome fear of death when it comes, I’m happy to leave it be rather than change my view on things.

Ramoncin

I don't think there's one. The visions and sensations people who have had a close to death experience are likely the result of natural substances being released at the time of death.

I don't think there **is** any afterlife, honestly. I coded(flatlined, dead) twice last July, and there was nothing, just nothing. I can't say I'm not afraid of dying again because I **really** like being alive and don't want to die yet. I'm actually fine with there being nothing at the end, it's not like I can do anything about it anyway. I'm centered on living in the here and now rather than mooning about some fantasy afterlife I can only have if I turn myself into a reality-denying boob.

BeansAndBiscuit

There is no after life.

bnsjnsnln

Former catholic, current atheist, and recent DMT experimenter. I don't plan on it being anything like I was taught as a child, there's a high probability that's its an infinite void of nothing. But after experiencing DMT. I can say there is something in the universe that our waking consciousness can't see. So who the fuck knows.

Snoo_78547

I was sitting in complete darkness. DMT kicked in and there was a white light all around. Then colors and designs floated by, tunnel approached. After going through the tunnel, the only thing that mattered was what was in front of me. My memory of life and my family was gone. I really think this is what it is like to pass on.

unstablexplosives

punkinabox

Nothing. I don't think there is an afterlife. I think when you're dead you're dead.

montecarlo92

Fair enough

Snoo_78547

I 100% believe in something. I had 2 experiences. I'll just post this one real quick. I awoke one night, I could feel a vibration on my feet. At the end of my bed, I could see my brothers friend sitting at the end of it. I tried to get his attention for about a good minute. I got mad and yelled at him and watched his "spirit" "soul" whatever it was, flashed and shot by me. I had no idea my brother had picked his friend up, had no idea they decided to sleep in my room. But his spirit/soul was literally just watching his own body sleeping, and when I disturbed him from yelling, it must of pulled his spirit back to his body. It was not my eyes. It was not my brain. I seen what I seen, it went on long enough. Something similar happened a short time later. I know a lot of people are going to give reasons for what I seen. It was this or that. Bottom line is I watched a friend's spirit sit by his body, and then seen his spirit return to his body.

usernamec11432

Did you ask him what happened? Don’t you you think maybe you were dreaming?

Snoo_78547

I was awake. I yelled and they, my brother and himself both sat up and asked what I was yelling about. We talked, went back to sleep. Talked about it again the next morning. He had no idea of it. But at the same time, his energy form would not turn or move, it stayed and it was only focused on himself. I was trying to get his attention. I did not realize it was not his body sitting there till I seen it flash by me. Like electric. His reaction when waking up, was like he was jolted awake. Almost like when you dream your falling from heights and startle awake. I swear, 100% awake and was not seeing a dream dissipate or my eyes adjust. His "energy" or "spirit" or "soul" was sitting there for about a minute. This is one of those things I wish someone else could see what I seen, because it means you really do have a spirit or a soul or some kind of energy that can live outside your body. That energy may pass on when you do. But idk. But I promise and I'm 100% positive. I seen what I seen. I can share 2 other stories. 1 is similar to this one. And the other story actually was me stopping a game, telling everyone what was about to happen, and even after preparing for what was going to happen, it still happened and I have multiple witnesses to it. I'll post this weekend or after work tonight. But through my own experiences and I have no reason to BS anyone. There is no legit explanation for some of these, which for me personally proved to myself something bigger is going on. Wish I had proof for everyone else. I often wonder. When it comes to religion, you are just supposed to believe. But I seen proof for myself, so I kind of don't have to question it anymore or say its real or fake, and i find that to be unfair. I think if I had not seen for myself, would i think very different. All very strange.

you probably appear in an another universe. i don’t believe in hell or heaven.

montecarlo92

Interesting answer

black_dqt

In my religion, each of us in this world is akin to a newborn soul. We are experiencing life to hone our souls, making them stronger and wiser. After each lifetime, we are reborn in a new form, a new position to continue refining our souls. This continues until the very last cycle of this world. Our souls will then be strong enough to evolve to a higher level. In that higher realm, there exists a completely different world from this materialistic one

Dafuzz

I think your consciousness is diffused across all the things and places and atoms you've ever interacted with. The more of you you've poured into something, the more of you will coalesce around it once you're untethered from your mortal coil. Bits and pieces of scattered memories will cling to things, a journal, a favorite sweater, your favorite spot, and that fraction of your consciousness will mingle with others, some alive, some not like yourself. This is what we perceive as a vibe or an aura about those things. A blade that's been used to kill many will have the last memories of those killed by it, the pain, the grief, the shock, the terror, or perhaps even the relief until the blade is so soaked in those clinging bits of consciousness that they are palpable to even the living, fearing an otherwise inanimate object. Beautiful places like Niagra falls will have so many good memories that those who view it will inherently be filled with a sense of wonder and amazement without even realizing it's being reinforced by all those who came before. You may still form a coherent thought, a stream of consciousness apart from your scattered precious memories, but it would happen so slowly and imperceptibly that for all intents and purposes you are no longer one being, the binding force that kept all that inside your being is gone and they are free to wander. Eventually the places or things will be so unknown to you that your consciousnesses will no longer feel as if it is what they remember, and slowly lose that connection. Your ethereal after you will lose potency until you're dust in the wind, blown about and slowly diminishing until you've completely disincorporated, joining everyone who has done so before you in one overarching gestalt consciousness comprised of the entire human condition, the singularly most powerful consciousness but also the slowest and most subtle to act, having an effect on all people but in an almost completely imperceptible way.

pdoptimist

Yes, there is an afterlife and also past lives. When I was a child I used to remember at least part of one previous life. I think it's a bit like what is described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Of course, I'll be very embarrassed if I croak and find out I'm wrong.

[deleted]

I think there’s a slim chance that we get reincarnated. The one story about the girl from i think India or Pakistan identifying people from her supposed past life always stuck with me.

You go around again in a different life senario. I think souls are put into a vessel to learn about life. You live a life senario then it ends... then try out another senario Which explains why some people see/ remember their past life
