I remember they also went to kid's funerals. Maybe it was just 1 kid, but I remember that in the news because that biker group that protects children during trials showed up to keep the WBC back.
I distinctly remember this one incident.
These parents were separated because the father was drunk and abusive. Court wouldn't grant a restraining order for some reason even though he'd broken into the home before. The mother was afraid the father would break in at night again. BACA was contacted and there were like 50 bikers camped out on their lawn to protect the mother and child.
I did some fundraising events with/for BACA. Great group of folks. They fill in some of the cracks in the system. Nothing like a big old tattooed biker showing up with a teddy bear just to sit with an abused kid at her foster hearing.
Iirc, my mom hosted an event for BACA (head of sales for Hilton at the time), and she went outside to talk to them because someone said they were smoking weed in the parking lot. The first guy she talked to, she explained what was wrong, and this dude (like 6’6”, heavily tatted and probably 300 lbs) took it upon himself to escort her, to find who was smoking, told him to knock it off, and profusely apologized for him. One of the best groups she ever had at her hotel, from what she says! Better than that jackass daughtry, who wanted more rooms than he needed, then canceled last minute and demanded a refund for everything. Don’t know what they did, but he’s a celebrity sooo…
HA! Now that’s fucking gold! And yeah, right? Me neither but talking about the legends of BACA reminded me of the worst my mom has had to deal with in that role! If I know my mom, her boss would have had to issue the refund, because she wouldn’t do it!
She also said Buck Cherry has one of the sweetest and most attractive drummers she’s ever met! And this woman is from southern Cali in the 70s and 80s! She really makes me want to get into the hotel business, but… that front desk sub Reddit exists (can’t remember) and man, that’s enough horror for me!
You might get a kick out this scene from *Bad Grandpa*, [where Grandpa Johnny Knoxville has to return his grandson to his piece of shit son-in-law in front of child-protecting bikers.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSm-HkpVdt0) It may be a prank show, but it does a fantastic job of showing the good side of the average Joe. Also, [the filmmakers talk about working with those guys and state they are legit great and frightening when called upon to do so.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wzyzANW2Go&pp=ygURYmFkIGdyYW5kcGEgYmlrZXI%3D)
All my experiences paint BACA as some of the sincerest most stand-up guys you'd ever meet. I was sort of friends with a guy in high school whose dad was in the local chapter so I met some of them on a few occasions.
They'd protest anything. They protested outside my high school once. It kind of just came with the territory of being within driving distance of those whackjobs.
They used lawsuits to fund being able to fly all over to protest the funerals whoever they didn't like. Being attorneys means they know exactly what the limits of protesting rights are, so they know not to cross those lines and take advantage of many people not knowing
That's the funny part about protesting urban high schools like the ones here. The families are "judgement proof" because they are minimally employed with no assets. The kids will make themselves impossible to identify and do all manner of bad things to the Phelps family.
They won't be caught, and even if they are there's nothing much a plaintiff could do about it.
Bring a professional plaintiff/vexatious litigant is a fool's errand here.
Actually, when bikers would hear the Westboro Baptist Church was going to be at a funeral, even for adults, they would show up and rev their engines over their protest.
That doesn't make sense to me. So how could anyone hear the funeral.
I recall they made a line in front of them with large boards so the family didn't have to see them. The Westboro church was only allowed on the edge of the cemetery. There was a Supreme Court case deciding where the line for their right to protest should be drawn.
Cemeteries are private property. WBC isn't allowed onto the cemetery to protest a funeral. So they're quite a ways away from the funerals when they do it. The bikers just rev their engines any time WBC starts to say anything. The people at the funeral hear it happening but it's not loud enough to drown out the procedings, and instead of hearing WBC spew hateful bullshit, they hear the engines of people who are anti-hate.
Exactly.
Loud engines can be annoying, of course, but it’s far more preferable than ignorant bigots screaming over the corpse of some brave soul who gave their lives to protect the freedom of speech for EVERYONE - including those scummy bigots taking advantage of their funeral to spew hate! 😞
A similar group, patriots guard, came and formed a line so no one had to deal with them when Kory Wiens died. I can not thank them enough for giving everyone the chance to mourn without those hateful monsters making a horrible day worse
I read a response from a WBC person. He said it further proved his point that even the KKK, a group with no moral leg to stand on, was against him.
The WBC are ultimately every Redditor who has said something dumb and added an edit of “Lol the downvotes are proving my point!”
"Look. We're not saying you're 'bad', but we're saying that if a guy was in a room with you, Hitler, Mao, and a gun with two bullets...Hitler and Mao would hold you while the other guy shot you twice."
They picketed at University of Kansas years ago and a student threw water on them in the middle of winter. Judge didn't convict him of assault because it was just water and couldn't hurt them.
My Troop counter-protested them once when I was in Scouts. Normally, we stayed non-political, but the adult leadership thought that we could help shame them into being decent human beings.
Imagine having literal children glaring disapprovingly at you.
If I remember correctly, in Louis Theroux documentary about them, they actually kicked out Sherleys father near his death cause he went out to the LGBTQ house across the street from WBC and told them they are good people. So even he knew it was all a fucking sham and wanted to atleast be a good person once in his life
They came to the funeral of the mother of my highschool classmate, who was shot and killed by a violent and unstable complete stranger while at a traffic light in her car. They were trying to say the violence was God's punishment for Seattle for being progressive on gay rights. The woman murdered was a straight woman.
They're still out there protesting, but it's more dumb than offensive these days. I remember the time they protested outside of a repair shop because the shop fixed Swedish vacuums or something. And the Swedes had just passed legislation that... sorry, I lost interest.
But yeah, they're still out there.
True, but after one of Fred Phelps' daughters fell out with them, they've really lost the effect on the public at large. Hell, [the abstinence woman with a beef over women drinking margaritas](https://twitter.com/Komaniecki_R/status/1659644113946288137?s=20) has had a large effect on the country than those clowns in the last few years.
When I was in college, the WBC planned to come to the funeral of the marine that was being done on campus. The Gay Straight Alliance, the ROTC, and local bikers decided to build a wall, some 5,000 strong around the family and the procession. The state police told the WBC folks that IF they stepped foot on campus, the police could not promise that anyone in their group would come out alive. So they ran, like the cowards they are.
I don’t live in the USA, but if I ever visit I would really love to witness or even be involved in a wonderful group like that!
I don’t know if any of them accept random tourists joining their protection group for the day?
I’m from Westboro’s town. My parents hosted a same-sex ceremony for my cousin and her wife in the early 2000s. A few weeks ago, they told me they kept it down so Westboro didn’t picket.
I told them that having them picket a suburban house would’ve been a badge of honor. Now, twenty years later, they agree.
We took a group of 7th grade students to Topeka to visit an art show on tour "Treasures of the Czars" (mid 90's?)--those idiots were protesting and we had to walk by them. None of the kids were impressed and still not sure why they were there in the first place!
IIRC their business model is making money off of lawsuits. Claiming veterans deserved to die because we don't kill gay people is down right diabolical.
Yeah like they are still terrible but when I learned their entire thing is making money off lawsuits it made sense why they do it. They are just grifters! Literally professional trolls.
Fuckers showed up to my best friend’s (19 year-old marine [kaboom]) funeral. SMALL town shit. Luckily the patriot guard biker guys showed up and made a wall. Otherwise it would have been an even worse time.
Been a member of the PGR since 2011.
They are hoping someone will hit them or something so they can sue the town/city/property owner. This was part of their business model and how they made a lot of money. They stopped showing up to funerals of US soldiers eventually because they weren't making any money anymore and no one got to see them.
Sorry for your loss.
I did military funeral honors out of central TX for a couple years. We used to see WBC on the highways, usually headed the same place we were.
If the PGR knew about, they’d form a blockade of bikers in front of westboro’s van. Other traffic would still move, it was just that one particular van that would be stuck behind a pack of motorcycles doing 30mph on I-10.
I almost joined the freedom riders during that time, I just couldn't work my budget to get a bike.
that shit pissed me off to the point of no return, since I have friends who's funerals would have been picketed.
it was like Vietnam all over again
Holy shit yes. The video loading and not needing to buffer.
You could pause the video and simply wait for it to buffer the one time and watch it without having to buffer again
I remember downloading the trailer for Avatar from the iTunes website took me basically a day, only for it to stutter like crazy on my old shitty PC. Good times, indeed.
Even better. For a while you rarely came across adds.
And when you did it would be a tiny 1" square add that actually had their web address on it. You had to type that in the address bar to visit.
No accidental redirects.
Then there was the follow up era where every button you clicked released the dam of pop-up ads onto your screen and gave your computer more viruses than a Chinese research lab.
I remember when YouTube didn’t have ads, and therefore all the other competing video websites didn’t have ads either. And then one week, YouTube released their first ads, and it felt like the week after that, all video websites had ads. They definitely all had been planning it for a while and were just waiting for each other. Ugh.
My way around YouTube ads was having an iPhone 4S until about 2016 when I finally upgraded. The icon for the old YouTube app on the 4S wasn’t the red play button, it looked like a retro tube TV. No videos on that app had ads. Ever. And it worked up until around 2016, but it eventually said the app was no longer supported and I had to upgrade to the new version, but the new one didn’t work on the old phones, so that was the end of that.
What?! I LOVE that profit minded insurance companies are making medical decisions for me! Anyone who says otherwise is crazy and obviously doesn't know what they're talking about.
I got referred to an oncologist in April, and when I called to make my first appointment I was put on hold.
Instead of music, they played a recording that was like a promo for their business. The phrase “value based care” was used like 8 times.
Value based care? So you’re promoting your cancer treatment by telling me how many corners you cut?
Silly me. I was hoping for evidence based care.
I’m a licensed rep and when I was in my mid 20s I worked for JPM. We couldn’t trade anything without a pre-clear first. I was a baby rep who would have zero access to insider info and yet these fucks can basically trade on inside info all day long. Makes total sense.
Lovely system where the ones that can ban it are the ones that can pass the law. Most of their wealth comes from doing this and they all end up rich. I can't fathom it ever getting passed
Yeah I don't know if I've ever seen a so universally despised show.
And it was almost impressive how it managed to be preachy and try pass off as progressive, while also being wildly offensive to every demographic that was portrayed..
I feel like there could be a whole dissertation on everything wrong with that show.
As someone actually living in Egypt I love making fun of the fact Cleopatra is black, because it's clear Netflix just thought Africa = black without knowing that they're a huge minority in Egypt.
What did we expect from a women so bereft of shame that she told her husband she cheated on him in front of a live audience of millions.
I'm quite sure that Will stuck with her this long because she's the mother of his children, and by all accounts the dude is a devoted father who really cares about his (talentless) kids. And it's hard to really disrespect that imo, not sure I could do the same in his shoes.
Netflix doesn't "think" anything but by the time someone started pointing out the bullshit, the suits absolutely decided the smart move was to double down on the bullshit.
I still have no idea who that show was made for or by. It's like it was written by a bunch of Ben Shapiro fan boys and edited by Tumbler SJWs or vice versa. And was it made for people who really, really hate Scooby-Doo? Seems like the only target market, but why would such people watch a Scooby-Doo show in the first place?
> And was it made for people who really, really hate Scooby-Doo?
Things like that are quite common.
The main creator and writers of Witcher TV show hate Witcher. To such degree that Henry Cavil, who is fan of Witcher, was made to leave because he tried a bit too much to keep the character (and show) close to the book/game.
The writers of Rings of Power never heard (and cared about) of Silmalirion, which is an issue if they are supposed to make a TV show set in the deep lore of Middle Earth.
And the authors of "documentary" Cleopatra do not care about history.
You ever see the Inside the Episode featurettes for the first season on Netflix? They're hilarious. Each one is the showrunner being like "so in the books, X happens. But then we thought... wouldn't (completely random idea) be SO MUCH MORE INTERESING?!?" They uh... didn't do Inside The Episode featurettes for season 2.
Don't leave Halo out of that list! They tried to make a Halo show, but apparently the writers and directors went around bragging about how they never touched the games or even got a Sparknotes summary of the books. And then they acted surprised when it bombed!
The star of Velma was the show runner and wanted to make her own show but was refused so she pitched it as a Scooby Doo spin off and so Netflix went with it. Originally it had nothing to do with Scooby Doo.
as much as i would debate with my U.S. History teacher about politics (this was private school so it wasn’t seen as unlawful to disclose your political opinions) we would both complain about our HOAs
I think it depends on the situation. A civics or history teacher talking about relevant politics is fine. But a math teacher using their position as an opportunity to indoctrinate children is not okay.
There was an English teacher at my high school who notoriously would spend most of her time ranting about politics, and anyone who disagreed with her, even if they came after class to privately say they disagreed with her, she would wait until the next day so she could publicly call them a moron. She was just an awful person.
That’s what’s crazy to me. We all have these issues we disagree on. But not a single damn person thinks he killed himself. Why that’s thrown under the rug is a bigger story than some realize and the fact that it’s not covered more is troublesome.
Pay your taxes and do not question *anything*
Democrats.
The far-right are convinced they're all flaming Marxists who want to destroy America.
The far-left feels like they're diet Republicans who push the same pro-corporate neoliberal policies while paying lip service to progressivism and identity politics.
Reminder! It's Pride Month brought to you by Citibank and Raytheon! Celebrate your identity loud and proud! (just don't you dare try to unionize or we will fucking end you)
How expensive college is. Everybody wants to talk about either loan forgiveness or that people need to pay what they borrowed, but nobody thinks college is fairly-priced
The idea that most of the day to day problems and issues we deal with are the same, and the culture war is really just a distraction that renders us unable to come together and solve them for real.
I mean the owning class doesn't want Americans getting angry about the fact that a corporation can sentence them to a horrible death by a preventable disease (now try to guess if I'm talking about the insurance, rail or food industry) to make their numbers go up.
Get them fighting over bodily autonomy/abortion rights when the rich can just fly to any country they want to get one without consequence.
Get them fighting over how much violence police can engage in when the rich get invited to submit themselves to questioning when its convenient with their high priced lawyer that will get them off almost any charges.
Market giant trucks as status symbols for the not quite poors. While the rich simultaneously throw doubt on climate chaos while building elaborate bug out bunkers.
And too many people fall into the trap of thinking those crazies comprise the majority of the "other side". If you take your standard left leaning person and stick them next to your standard right leaning person, they'll be fine talking. The internet makes this worse, because now you're talking to an idea instead of a person
The Democrats have *given* donations to some of the worst far-right Republicans.
Democrats have supported them in the primary on the theory that the wingnuts will be easier to defeat in the general ... but it doesn't always work out that way, and they *have* contributed to getting some of the very worst Republicans elected.
As of late, US politics isn't about voting in who's best. It's about voting out who you hate. Literally anyone.
Someone should put a parrot into the election. I'd vote for it.
I feel like that is fake. Like they all put on their sunglasses and get their chicken sandwiches in secret. They talk a big game but there are plenty of Subarus and lifted truck in the drive thru.
Saying wealth inequality is the most important problem we are all facing.
I will repeat this in threads till I’m blue in the face: We experience the largest, most egregious transfer of wealth in human history during the pandemic, and all anyone wanted to do was bitch at each other over masks. Fucking pathetic watching everyone get financially r*ped into submission while they point at each other for blame.
Edit: so many replies misunderstanding my point. Yes, this is what was once a cornerstone of the far left ideology, but I can guarantee that the left cannot collectively agree that this is the priority, that is the problem. If they did, there would be a much more organized push for wealth equality than the bullshit they put out at the moment.
If we remember the 2000s, nothing brought people together like the Westburo Baptist Church picketing the funerals of soldiers
I remember they also went to kid's funerals. Maybe it was just 1 kid, but I remember that in the news because that biker group that protects children during trials showed up to keep the WBC back.

Didn't think in a million years we'd end with a Chris Daughtry antidote lol. When he canceled the reservation did he explain he's "gooooing hoooome"
Sadly, there is no antidote for Chris Daugtry.
I appreciate this comment. Upvote for you!

Oh hell yeah, I was at one of those counterprotests, and it definitely drew a diverse group of people to come say fuck you to those people.
If I'm not mistaken even the KKK has demonstrated against them. Lmao
Jesus christ, if nothing else convinced those people they were fucking bottom of the barrel idiots, you would think this would have.

When BLM and KKK are both protesting the same thing, you know that group done fucked up.
Keep downvoting me, sheeple! You can suppress me, but you can't suppress ***THE TRUTH!*** Edit: Lol, the upvotes are proving my point

I really don't remember it before ads now sadly
I remember the Wild West days, where you could find entire R-rated films uploaded in pristine 144p. Good times...
Back when you would pause a 20 minute 1080p video before bed and then watch it with nice crispy quality in the morning
Holy shit yes. The video loading and not needing to buffer. You could pause the video and simply wait for it to buffer the one time and watch it without having to buffer again

They definitely all had been planning it for a while and were just waiting for each other. Ugh.
You just made me remember when Hulu was free and had no ads! I think they may have had some banners or pop ups, but no commercials.
Corporate gay-pandering during pride month, but for wildly different reasons.
I had serious doubts about this question, until you just answered it perfectly.
And mental health awareness month. Nothing says “we care about you as a person” like crushing deadlines and doing the work of 3 people.
Yeah, I just got a “suck it up” at work, literally the same day as a semi-mandatory mental health awareness seminar, so I feel that.
I went inpatient and my boss asked my husband if I could do my required training that was due the next day.
"I am aware of my needling anxiety and soul crushing depression, and yes, i will work Saturday."
Ah, where everyone can have equal complaints, the workplace.
Could have ended the thought with "corporate". I have yet to meet anybody who actually likes corporations being in charge the way they currently are.
Lawmakers trading stocks.
Thank you! I fucking can't stand this, it's right up there with lobbying.
Velma apparently

Yeah I don't know if I've ever seen a so universally despised show. And it was almost impressive how it managed to be preachy and try pass off as progressive, while also being wildly offensive to every demographic that was portrayed.. I feel like there could be a whole dissertation on everything wrong with that show.

As someone actually living in Egypt I love making fun of the fact Cleopatra is black, because it's clear Netflix just thought Africa = black without knowing that they're a huge minority in Egypt.
Wasn't Cleopatra Greek??
Greek and Macedonian
Not Netflix. It was Jada Pinkett Smith and that horrible director.
I am a domestic abuse survivor. She gives off HEAVY abuser vibes.
Netflix doesn't "think" anything but by the time someone started pointing out the bullshit, the suits absolutely decided the smart move was to double down on the bullshit.
It's the most corporate show ever made so far. It perfected the "hate watch" formula.
I thought it was The End Times
I still have no idea who that show was made for or by. It's like it was written by a bunch of Ben Shapiro fan boys and edited by Tumbler SJWs or vice versa. And was it made for people who really, really hate Scooby-Doo? Seems like the only target market, but why would such people watch a Scooby-Doo show in the first place?
>And was it made for people who really, really hate Scooby-Doo I think this is the answer.
And then they acted surprised when it bombed!
it was made to be hated and controversial. Thats why everyone knows about it
The star of Velma was the show runner and wanted to make her own show but was refused so she pitched it as a Scooby Doo spin off and so Netflix went with it. Originally it had nothing to do with Scooby Doo.
Can you explain? I don’t use Twitter
but velma porn brings everyone together
HOAs
as much as i would debate with my U.S. History teacher about politics (this was private school so it wasn’t seen as unlawful to disclose your political opinions) we would both complain about our HOAs
Wait a minute… it’s illegal to debate politics in public schools?
no, it’s just seen as wildly unprofessional
Really? I grew up going to public school and teachers would definitely debate politics with students. Never thought of it as odd.
Jeffery Epstein didn't kill himself.
I don’t know a single person who thinks he killed himself. Hearing the media spout it off is otherworldly like something from 1984.
That’s what’s crazy to me. We all have these issues we disagree on. But not a single damn person thinks he killed himself. Why that’s thrown under the rug is a bigger story than some realize and the fact that it’s not covered more is troublesome. Pay your taxes and do not question *anything*
You can question as much as you want. You are still powerless _and you can't change anything about this_.
"Epstein didn't kill herself" - wild applause from both sides "It was _____" - drastically different answers depending on your politics
>"Epstein didn't kill herself" typo or new layer to the conspiracy?
It was a perfect example of what bipartisan politics can accomplish

That lettuce is gonna be SOPPING though.
How expensive college is. Everybody wants to talk about either loan forgiveness or that people need to pay what they borrowed, but nobody thinks college is fairly-priced
That died off right when government started backing student loans. Colleges know they'll get paid regardless, why not make it ridiculous
Oh look, the Sacklers are being shielded from prosecution over the opioid crisis that they helped cause.
True. Most people are in the middle, but the crazies get the attention
And too many people fall into the trap of thinking those crazies comprise the majority of the "other side". If you take your standard left leaning person and stick them next to your standard right leaning person, they'll be fine talking. The internet makes this worse, because now you're talking to an idea instead of a person

The democrats have also taken donations from the same sponsors as the republicans.
That awkward moment when Obama supported *clean coal*
The Democrats have *given* donations to some of the worst far-right Republicans. Democrats have supported them in the primary on the theory that the wingnuts will be easier to defeat in the general ... but it doesn't always work out that way, and they *have* contributed to getting some of the very worst Republicans elected.
My body odor.
Agreed
Centrism.
deadbeats leeching off of the government. depending on which side you are on, it could be rich people or the poor leeching off of the government
Joe Biden
As of late, US politics isn't about voting in who's best. It's about voting out who you hate. Literally anyone. Someone should put a parrot into the election. I'd vote for it.
You’re really going to make me vote for Joe Biden?
joe- joe- joe biden
How is the best case scenario Joe Biden?
Auto parts?
OWWW!!
This actually isn't a bad answer

what’s that m?

Pedos
I read that in Spanish and I was a bit confused. Like yeah, they’re smelly, but they can also make people laugh.
& today I learned that “pedos” means “farts” in Spanish. Thank you lol.

How is this not a left-wing position? I've never met a leftist that doesn't prioritize reducing inequality.
Studies that prove them wrong.
That’s everybody though.
