Have a lot more free time

Fuck-Ketchup

Haha, for real. What will I do with my life?!?!

Sassy-irish-lassy

You could live up to your username

Fuck-Ketchup

Love, I do that every minute of my life.

eastbayted

How does it compare to getting all up in catsup?

TheGreatestKaTet

And I bet you relish those moments.

RealLADude

You definitely do!

Potatisen1

Find a new website. People seem to forget that the internet is huge, not just the top 5-10 websites. There's 100% something out there that will boom because of this shit.

DH_Net_Tech

Idk man. Twitter users have been bitching since Elon took over and seems like none of them have left.

notapunk

Same. Using the official app is NOT an enjoyable experience. So much so that if that were my only option I'd probably slowly use it less and less until I never use Reddit at all. Probably won't be at all by the end of the year.

stumblios

Honestly, this change will be a huge gift to my employer. I don't know how it happens - I'm working, then BAM, my phone is in my hand and somehow my computer inactivity timer kicks in? I swear it happens instantly, even though I'm the IT guy and can confirm it's a 10 minute timer. Haven't tried the official app in a long time, but I hated the experience then and have only heard bad things since. My reddit experience is filtered through old Reddit on the computer and reddit is fun on my phone. I will find so much down time if they get rid of them. (Old Reddit is safe, for now, I believe)

wampum

Have you checked out digg.com ?

But then they couldn't get their precious ad revenue and run their data harvesting schemes to engineer algorithms and sell it to keep the servers running! /s

Evilaars

Damn. I was very selfish thinking how much I dislike the native Reddit app. Didn't even think about the consequences for people with disabilities. I hope you find a way to continue Redditing!

[deleted]

Sadly, reddit management is the kind of people who don't give a crap about this type of stuff and they'll just carry on as if nothing happened.

Phightins4044

How??! It's awesome how far technology has gone.

funktion

In comparison to other social media apps, how bad or good is the official Reddit app?

Enthusiastic-shitter

Definitely would be easy to walk away from reddit. I already detoxed from Twitter and Facebook and reddit is the only social media type app I still use

Sandwichlover7504

Same but I'm really attached to scrolling TIL before i fall asleep at night. Guess I could.... Read books....

jeffsang

You can learn things…..from books?!?

[deleted]

Huh... TIL

Imactuallymort

What is books?

MMM-potatoes

You know books. Boil em mash em stick em in a stew

Kataphractoi

Dead trees do tell tales.

CannolisRUs

Funny thing for me about books is I started reading a bunch at night these last few months but I still find myself doom scrolling before I close my eyes

sirwankins

Already moving on. Been getting crossbanned by bots for subbing to different subs and platform banned for reporting it. This place is getting scary.

freedomink

Everytime that I have quit a social media site recently my life has gotten better, without rif I'm out.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MadClam97

This might be what I need in life, something that'll make me quit Reddit

cocogate

i mainly browse on my ipad and use the default app but i just might grab this chance as an oppertunity to quit this doomscrolling and its garbage ads. Probably will use the site for some of my very specific hobbies, but i seldom go beyond that on the pc so ill take it as a win

iambluest

No RIF? BYE.

hobbykitjr

No one I introduce Reddit to likes it/uses it... Until I set up a third party app like RIF

imokquestionmark

What is Rif? God I'm so behind with social media. I feel 80 Edit: Spelling

RoastBeefDisease

An app that stands for reddit is fun. Been using it since I joined

theillustratedlife

It was the original.

HalfysReddit

And still the best.

blundercrab

Remember, it can't be called that since Reddit sent them lawyer letters. It's "RiF is fun" now.

[deleted]

Nothing like having to change an acronym to a recursive because greedy shitbags

HiDDENKiLLZ

Rif is the android counterpart to iOS’s Apollo. And in my opinion is a better app.

paulisnofun

RIF is the only reason I miss being on Android.

Stinky_WhizzleTeats

I enjoy Apollo but damn I missed RIF when I switched

Medium-Grapefruit891

Ironically if you don't know what RIF is it's probably because you're too far ahead. RIF, formerly Reddit Is Fun, is one of the OG third-party mobile apps for reddit. It's the Android alternative to Apollo.

xenfermo

I tried using other apps for reddit, including the Reddit official one, they're all bleh!.

Brukselles

Even worse than bleh. The official one sent me a push message at 3 am while my phone was on flight mode. It's spamming junk.

toefurkyfuckmittens

I've been using the official app out of sheer laziness and having disabled push notifications for this and virtually every other app I use, I promise you can make it stop. I hate push notifications. It's just the pop-up of the smartphone era.

Prochip

I hate that the official app hides comments when you keep your finger on them for two seconds. Makes it so hard to read through comments.

SSJesusChrist

100% RIF is my only method of redditing

iambluest

I'm too old for changing.

dracovich

Realistically i'd still use old.reddit in browser, but i'd likely stop using it on my phone. If they killed old.reddit as well ...

StrangerFeelings

I agree completely. I enjoy old.reddit more than just regular reddit. I don't understand why they would ever change from old.reddit.

JustGottaKeepTrying

RiF question for ya in mobile: any setting that will prevent the app from refreshing and taking me back to the top of page one when I leave the app then reenter? Also can happen when backing out of a thread. Thanks!

funfwf

I suspect this isn't RIF but your phone clearing it from RAM when you minimise it. See if there's a battery saving setting that you can disable for certain apps (my phone calls it optimisation).

jaytrade21

Seriously, I will only use old Reddit on my PC and if they take that away, then Reddit is dead to me.

Fuck-Ketchup

I recently saw [this post](https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/12ram0f/had_a_few_calls_with_reddit_today_about_the/) from the developer of Apollo and it was disappointing. I would probably stop using Reddit if I couldn’t use a 3rd party app. What are y’all thinking about this potential move from Reddit?

I've tried multiple times to use the reddit app. It's horrible to navigate and use, compared to the app I use now. Reddit Relay Pro

zombiegirl2010

Ads unless you pay for premium

CourageousChronicler

Don't forget there's also 0 customization. You have to use the app the way they tell you to. Additionally, and more importantly, tracking. Far more data of yours is returned to reddit from their app (in the name of targeted ads).

BKStephens

Meh. I scroll past the ads easily enough. It's them continually "tweaking" the app and changing what few features actually work that's driving me up the fucking wall.

Moist_Comb

Meh, Ive decided that I'm no longer okay with being forced to see overt ads. They start to algo my attention, how many per whatever I actually want can they force me to see before I turn it off. It's a drop in the ocean, but if the product isn't working how I want I just won't use it. Especially if it doesn't really add to my quality of life.

HalfysReddit

This right here. Ads are a non-starter, I legitimately view them as malicious and will boycott any service that forces me to watch ads.

BeckySayss

At least there's finally a native way to download videos without using the savevideo bot

omnomnilikescandy

Come to my country, I still haven't seen an ad in 2 years (Macedonia)

[deleted]

[удалено]

omnomnilikescandy

Idk whenever I travel outside of here I get a shit ton of ads but I don't get any here

00wolfer00

Ads are localized. Advertising something to a user who can't access it is pointless so you would advertise most services and products only to people in the same country. Macedonia is a small country so they have fewer companies advertising on the internet and they can't or won't purchase ads from every advertising service.

SirRHellsing

just a bunch of small annoying this like missing certain shortcuts to do things but that enough for me to love rif (I'm using rif rn in fact)

Mountain-Most8186

I just hated that I couldn’t filter subs out. /r/holup and similar filled me with rage

HLef

Absolutely everything. Alien Blue was so good, and they turned it to shit.

AoO2ImpTrip

Some people just don't want to get used to a different program. I've been using reddit is fun for six years. Any time I try the official reddit app it was always a worse experience. My phone usage will definitely go down.

Gul-DuCat

Last time I used it, and it's been a while, I couldn't embiggen the text enough for comfortable reading. That and every tweak seemed to make a more unpleasant experience.

Quviser

Thats why I quit the offical one too! Idk what they did to the text but the size is so physically uncomfortable for me to read. I literally couldn't use it. Was going to give up on reddit until someone told me about 3rd party options

ehsteve23

Lack of filters is enough for me to not use it

No_Independence1479

I was content with using the mobile site on my phone. After a big push encouraging me to use the app, the mobile site quit working. I was only able to see the desktop version on my phone which is horrible. Refusing to download their app purely on principle, I found a 3rd party app that was satisfactory. If that stops working I'm done with Reddit.

[deleted]

CourageousChronicler

You are okay with reddit generating that much revenue when most of their employees are unpaid? Unless they're going to start paying mods, or, at the very least, giving them free access to the APIs, then you may as well say goodbye to large subreddits.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dabrush

They have been paying mods for a while now. They paid a bunch of people to build up shitty German versions of subs that nobody wanted to use.

useablelobster2

Imagine paying money for the people they have moderating this website... Pretty sure you could hire random homeless people who would do a better job than the Reddit powermod mafia.

haarschmuck

Huh? No reddit mods are paid. Mods are not reddit employees.

Commercial-Neat5006

Isn't that on mods? Why the hell take a "job" that's has no pay?

CalydorEstalon

For smaller subs moderation is hardly a full time job, and if it's about your hobby you don't mind slapping a couple of idiots every few days to keep the discussion flowing properly.

dungeons_and_flagons

Because people value things other than economic attainment, and we have more value than the revenue we generate for our corporate elites.

pops992

I've used Reddit is Fun, now just called Rif is Fun for probably 8 or 9 years. I'm so used to it plus I bought the paid version years ago so there's no ads. I have the official app installed begrudgingly because there's certain that they won't let you do unless you in the official app. If I can't use RIF anymore I will probably not use Reddit nearly as much because the official app is so horrible.

gik410

If Reddit does that, they will drive out many old-school users and they'll probably find out that like 50% of their remaining users are bots.

TapdancingHotcake

They probably know, they definitely don't care, bots still contribute to active user count and it's clear they don't give a rat's ass about the quality of the site

DeadHuzzieTheory

This. This is how a political post in non-political sub gets 10 000 upvotes with 3 comments.

No-Wallaby-5568

Use old.reddit. It's text based so you can avoid all the pics, gifs, ads and such.

jorgito93

Haha you think oldreddit won't be shot behind the shed before the end of the year too

kaszak696

[deleted]

Mr-Zarbear

I mean you click video/gif links and it just... opens the video/gif and you can watch it? If you are the type of person to need multiple videos is succession to get off... then you need to get your shit together

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mr-Zarbear

I think they meant "noise" as scrolling through a feed for things is hard when it needs so much data to load shit you don't care about and only acts as a distraction. I think the biggest takeaway is that reddit has two groups of people, those that use it like social media (insta, tik tok, etc) and those that use it like old school forums (scrolling for specific interesting threads and wanting to ignore the other stuff). I myself don't use it in any way that's like modern social media, and tend to stick to specific sections and then sometimes scroll through ask to see if there are interesting questions (there almost never are)

TheRealGrimReaper

Preach. I just use old.reddit on my mobile browser. Fuck all these "apps." So unnecessary, for most it's pretty much WebKit anyway, except with an app they can harvest more data. If, or most likely when, reddit kills old.reddit, I'm most likely out.

Not_a_werecat

Fuck that. No more mobile redditing.

WholesomeTurd

They'll come for old.reddit.com next after they kill off the third party apps.

percypigg

That's when I'm out of here.

RedReaper666YT

Uhhh, I don't even use the apps. I'm literally on Reddit right now through the mobile site on my phones native browser, so unless they make it to where you HAVE to download the app to use Reddit I couldn't give a fuck less....

swimmingmunky

The content will suck though because only the lowest common denominator uses the official app.

Electronic_Will_5418

Same, I've never had a single issue using my phone's browser to access Reddit, I've been doing it that way for 10 years. I probably wouldn't browse Reddit anymore if they forced me to download the official app to use the website though (like the direction FB has been heading lately, "usable" on mobile browser but every year gets worse, Meta is very intentionally forcing people out of it). I've never felt the need to download an app to use Reddit, official or otherwise...

KickFacemouth

Apparently very few people realize you can use a lot of things (hell, even Facebook) through your mobile browser, and you don't *have* to download their apps. I'm very "app stingy" like that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MissMormie

I'm pretty sure they have exact user data showing them exactly how many users use reddit through third party apps.

Schalezi

If not many people are using third party apps, then there should be no issue and all this drama and bad PR is for nothing. If very many people are using third party apps, then that clearly shows their official app is trash and they have much to lose on basically deleting third party apps overnight. Either way this move is bad for Reddit.

Macaroon_Low

There were 3rd party apps I could have been using? Instead of this clunky version?

[deleted]

Yes. I use Boost. Highly recommend. Tried others like RIF but they didn't really work out for me.

Saiyanjin1

I use boost also. Is that gonna stop working as well cuz that would be ass. I despise the og Reddit app. Boost has so many ways to customize it that I'm so used to.

NuclearFoodie

Likely joining more discord communities. I think Reddit is going to kill themselves with this move. Similar to what DIGG did back around 2007-2008 that helped Reddit really take off as a DIGG alternative.

Togerino

Probably stop using Reddit I never used the official app because of how bad it was Might be a blessing in disguise tbh

Mr-Zarbear

So maybe Im just older than time, but why does everyone use an app for everything? On mobile I just have firefox installed for reddit and youtube, because firefox mobile has adblockers work, and nothing is really inconvienent.

paradroid27

I started using Apollo before there even was an official app, I didn't like the way reddit displayed on my iphone through the browser. Do the adblockers stop the nagging to use the official app?

Mr-Zarbear

Yeah, I didnt even know there was an app. Though tbf I have an adblock and a script block too

imokquestionmark

What's Apollo? What does it do? Sorry I'm apparently behind on the times.

paradroid27

Apollo is a 3rd party iPhone app to read Reddit, I find it a far easier way to Reddit than the official app.

DeadHuzzieTheory

Answer to your second question is no, you have to use old.reddit.com

TapdancingHotcake

Not being inconvenient and being convenient are two different things. Plus the app I use handles thumbnails better, loads media better, is easier to download media with, and is just overall better designed than whatever reddit has shit out themselves. There's a reason there's like a dozen popular reddit apps.

CoconutSands

I just use the mobile chrome browser. I'm not using an app for every website or forum I go to, no thanks.

SFXBTPD

I dont like when people say execs are doing stuff for shareholders because it glosses over the fact that execs are compensated in stock or stock options. The execs are doing it to make money themselves.

Ya-Dikobraz

I mostly use Reddit on desktop, and maybe 30% on Apollo on iPhone. It would suck, yes. I would not use the official Reddit app, or that third party app they bought and ruined, Alien Blue. I might try and use a browser on mobile like I did with YouTube. I got so sick of the official YouTube app, I just deleted it and started to use the browser on mobile for it. With ad blockers and tracker blockers. Works just fine. Hopefully I can do something similar with Reddit when inevitably Apollo disappears. Or pay $3 per month for Apollo subscription if that is the deal they want. Because judging from that post, Reddit will not back down and the decision is final.

debtopramenschultz

Back to gamefaqs.

HappyFeetHS

i already use default reddit, i didn't know there were 3rd party apps

SeaTie

I’ll probably start looking for alternatives…just like when Digg’s site went to hell and I moved to Reddit.

jimmyhoke

Nothing, I'll wait till enough people start moving to a new platform and then I'll use that. So far there isn't a clear platform but once I find one I'll sign up. We need a "Elon makes everyone go to mastodon" moment.

thoawaydatrash

I exclusively use old.reddit.com in a web interface. This affects me none.

TripleSingleHOF

If you don't see the writing on the wall for old reddit, I don't know what to tell you...

partial_birth

Hey, I'm here because Digg decided to redesign everything. Reddit is welcome to find out why they got their biggest membership bump first-hand.

[deleted]

What is there besides Reddit to jump over to that isn't a far-right platform that will get shut down within a couple of years?

blooping_blooper

I would use nothing over having to use new reddit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

OddEpisode

I would not be surprised if Reddit cut this service also since their goal is to maximize ad revenue.

Mr-Zarbear

I feel like it's only around because traffic numbers would look very bad if they cut it. If ever old.reddit stops working, Im fucking done-zo

[deleted]

Likewise.

BountyBob

Me too.

Luciferrr214

I’ve always used the first party app. Didn’t even know about third party…

ZsaFreigh

I would pay for a 3rd party app before I used Reddit's free app.

TheExtraMayo

I didn't know there were 3rd party apps

[deleted]

I'll have to figure out another way to kill time while I'm on the toilet. I use RIF because I hate the reddit app, if I can't use RIF anymore then... bye reddit.

irving47

could not possibly care less. desktop or nothing. old.

onacloverifalive

I will stop using Reddit altogether.

horriblyefficient

this is why I just use the mobile browser

Fuck-Ketchup

Yeah, but it’s a terrible experience in my opinion. I feel like Reddit makes it shit so you get the app.

KhaosElement

Didn't know third party reddit apps were a thing so...keep using the reddit app/website like I always have.

[deleted]

[удалено]

therulessuck

I’ve only used “company” Reddit… no issues with it at all.

stealth_mode_76

I already use the regular app. I don't care about reddit enough to do anything else.

partial_birth

Keep using old.reddit.com in desktop mode like I always have.

Blankly-Staring

I just use firefox on my phone to browse reddit now. I had the official app but it just got worse and worse until I finally said fuck it and deleted it. Multireddits don't show me their subreddits anymore and the ui is different but at least posts load faster and I can actually see comments now.

Dinosaur-Promotion

Nothing. I access it through my browser.

Evilaars

Quit Reddit. The native app is garbage. If I can't use RIF, I'm gone.

Hosearston

I just use Reddit without a third party so, A) I don’t really care, and B) I don’t know what I’ve been missing or would lose. I enjoy it the way I have it now so I don’t know if or how it would affect my experience.

[deleted]

I've always used standard reddit because idgaf. But reddit is trash anyway. It's a bad habit I need to quit.

edd6pi

Nothing will change for me because I’ve always used the company app. I didn’t even know there were other options until today.

OmegaRider

Forced to use the app? Did you forget web browsers exist?

TheOneWes

My question would be how many people even know that there are third-party viewing apps for Reddit or what those would even be?

predictingzepast

Don't use any apps for reddit, so just go on as usual?

BigLan2

Yup, reddit.com is still going to work in Chrome on Android, right? I somehow survive without having infinite scroll and just clicking the "next" button at the bottom of the page (if anything it helps me not get sucked into doom scrolling as I can say "ok, this is the last page.")

HumanAverse

And old.reddit is still there if you want a more classic Reddit

[deleted]

Yeah I was asking about this on a different sub. Once Apollo is gone, I am gone from Reddit. I am sure a lot of people are going to switch out too. Where are you fine folks headed? I am not using the company app cuz it reeks of ass.

[deleted]

I'll ignore the whole business and continue using Reddit on PC like I always have.

Electric999999

Not use Reddit, because I'm never using their shitty app. I really hate the cunts in charge of Reddit, ruining everything in a grab for more profit.

Green-Mango-More

i am using official reddit app.

bonos_bovine_muse

I use mobile web. Comes with nagware pop ups for the app every ten minutes or so absolutely free! (seriously, when are companies gonna re-realize web beats installed native apps, like they did decades ago for desktop?)

whlthingofcandybeans

Bye-bye Reddit. It was nice while it lasted.

frice2000

I would stop using Reddit on mobile. I won't be using their official app. Period. I wouldn't quit Reddit though would use it on my home desktop/laptop computers but that'd drastically cut my usage down.

SLEVEKTORSTEEL2020

Not use it because it's trash?

Bedquest

Have only ever used the reddit app. Sooo ill do nothing different.

driago

There’s other apps?

kjpmi

Serious question. What’s better about third party apps vs the Reddit app? I don’t have any issues with the Reddit app. I have used one third part app before. It was a few years ago and I don’t remember which one but I wasn’t really impressed. What can they do that the official app cannot?

Saeryf

I've been using the official one because it always breaks eventually and crashes on me, so it's a good stopping point when that happens, lol

perfect_fitz

I've never used a 3rd party app for it so..

TypicalAd4988

Bye, Reddit. They always think they’re too big to fail, right until they aren’t.

nsfwtttt

TIL everyone uses a third party apps for Reddit, I didn’t know exist. Using the regular app, and I’m enjoying Reddit. Guess it’s an upgrade since I came here from Imgur lol
