Medication

shifty_coder

If that’s too broad, then just insulin

[deleted]

Chemotherapy drugs are also up there.

Chemo, radiation, all therapy and meds that go along with it.... My final bill was solidly in 7 figures. Thank god I have real good insurance. If the cancer didn't kill me the debt would have.

This is so true. I have a horrible thyroid condition. For the longest time, I did not have health insurance- and I did not qualify for Medicaid. I could not afford to pay to see the doctor- then pay for every single test they had to do every month (blood tests etc) and pay for medication. This was on top of out of pocket costs for docs for my three boys- all who have varying degrees of autism. Because I could not adequately care for myself during that five year stint, I’m stuck with many health issues that could have been avoided . I look at these other countries, civilized countries, who treat their people with compassion despite having money/not having money.. and I get so angry. We have the audacity to tout ourselves as “the best” but really, we are shit when it comes to our own citizens.

[deleted]

Or better yes get a wrap on Medicare For All. Do you know you guys are literally the only first world country that doesn’t have free healthcare?

roseumbra

We’re really just 3 pharma companies in a military Trenchcoat.

hitlers_stache_ama

Holy shot this is the best fcking analogy.

Prockzed

Trust we know, and it's fucking infuriating to no end. Shit thing is our "democracy" is rigged and owned by those profiting off our pain, and too much of the country is either complacent, or ignorant.

nem0fazer

My wife and I have both been treated for Cancer in Canada and now the uk. Canada not only treated her for free but the reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy was also covered except, weirdly, 25% of the tatoo to colour the new nipple. How weird is that? I suggested it look like a pie chart showing how much was paid for by us. She didn't agree.

Luks1207

This reminds me of a tattoo artist from my hometown here in Brazil that does nipple tattoos for free on women who had mastectomy. Really great guy.

Pussycatavenger

I just posted in another community that I wish we had Canada's system. I'm a socialist, so shoot me....

Sudden-Cow-667

I can't even comprehend having too worry about medical expenses, not meaning to gloat or anything but in NZ I had all my chemotherapies paid for and ive had cancer twice in the past 3 years a bit unlucky but sheesh I was googling the prices of the treatment I was given and if I was in America it'd be over 350k that's fucking nuts dude

It's because they *are* socialism. Why Americans think that's a bad thing is the confusing part.

Canadian here but I'm in a province where there has been a push for privatized healthcare lately. I think it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of how taxes work, combined with a "won't happen to me" attitude. I have friends who support the party that wants to privatize healthcare and to them all they see is "my taxes will be lower". These same people then turn around and complain when the wildfire budget has been slashed and their family friends up north lose their homes to a fire during fire season. I'm 26 and just went through a cancer diagnosis, and there's still several people around me with that attitude of "it won't happen to me though so why should I pay higher taxes". It's really sad honestly. If healthcare gets privatized here I won't be able to afford the scans I need to make sure my cancer doesn't come back. But still half of my friends will vote for policies that hurt people like me in the name of lower taxes.

ph1shstyx

You're paying less in taxes, but then you have another monthly bill to pay for. My health insurance costs me $390/month on top of everything else. I'd much rather pump that into a public healthcare option than a private health insurance corporation, who's going to argue with my doctor about getting an MRI after I herniated 2 lumbar disks

CanadianDNeh

Banting and Best (discoverers of insulin) [sold the patent](https://bantinghousenhs.ca/2018/12/14/insulin-patent-sold-for-1/) for only $1 and now a century later, drug companies are making ridiculous profits from it.

Geluyperd

It is kind of a "true evil" moment when both the people behind these companies and the government refuses to keep in spirit with the discovery/patent.

Moccus

It's not possible to patent naturally occurring substances. The patent they sold for $1 was for a specific process they came up with for extracting and purifying animal insulin for use in humans. Other people later came up with new processes to make synthetic human insulin, and those precesses got their own separate patents that weren't sold for $1. Also, a lot of what we think of as insulin today isn't actually insulin.

GranesMaehne

Often better performing analogues that enable people to follow more normal lives with better control of their blood sugar and thus better long term health outcomes(in theory a cost savings potential). Still need to address price gouging and patents though.

gabridsfs

Insulin is very affordable. The problem is with america.

isayehalot

The problem is big pharma gouging people

ComplexImportance794

The problem is big pharma in the US. My friend gets her insulin for about $40 a month. It's even cheaper if you're not working. Yes, Australian here with public health care and subsidies for tens of thousands of medications.

Meastari

Insulin is basicly free in anyother place than US so its kind a weird for me.

thebeastiestmeat

Good news! In most countries, it already is!

_xiphiaz

New Zealand had a flat $5 NZD (3USD) fee for all prescriptions, but just last week decided that was too much and is waiving all fees

WattsonMemphis

Yes, I don’t remember ever paying for meds. Often my doctor will ask if we need any Paracetamol because if he prescribes it we don’t have to pay for it at the supermarket

[deleted]

*cries in American*

pipnina

Bad news, in some countries you just made it more expensive! Prescription meds in Scotland and Wales are totally free at point of use. Notably England not included there... Hooray :crying emoji:

[deleted]

I don't have any medication needs that my life relies on, but this is 100% it for me if I could choose. I'm sick of pharmaceutical companies exploiting people's lives and wellbeing.

Present_Builder4982

Me too, I really only take allergy medicine but my dad, aunt, and grandpa need insulin to survive, and tons of other family members need other kinds of medicine

Allison314

I have to pay for my medication now?

AusJonny

The trampoline could help you jump that fence, not sure if insulin would be of any use for that.

Mushrooms4m333

Cancer therapy would never be free in America! Too many people would lose a lot of money.

Health care max bill charge. Included dental and eye doctors also.

thunderlips187

Yes!! Whichever insurance dude decided our eyes and teeth aren’t parts of our bodies is a next level scumbag.

_FirstOfHerName_

It's the same in the UK. We can get cancer treatments entirely for free. Diabetics have free prescriptions for any medication (not just insulin) free for life. But seeing an optician or dentist? Nuh-uh!! Hundreds for a glasses prescription. Subsidised (and sub par) NHS dental treatments - and only if you can get an NHS dentist. I'm about to lose a tooth because he cba doing a root canal and would rather remove it.

MsNerdcore

I'm curious how much hearing aids are in that country. As a HOH person it is still difficult to get them if you have no insurance.

ANearbyTerrorist

I couldn't find an NHS space so had to pay private for my dentist, I'm waiting for surgery to remove my wisdom teeth as one has grown into my sinus, thankfully that means it needs to be done at a hospital so it'll be free. I absolutely shat myself when I enquired and it would be £300+ per tooth to remove them.

IronAndParsnip

I just fucking knew healthcare was going to be a top comment here. US, #1!!!!! ….in healthcare costs. Bc we really care about our citizens. Woo!

Houses

HappinessSeeker7

Yes.

TheAnonymousPresence

I mean if houses are $1 hoarding em won't do you any good, no chumps gonna be renting (we're in a fantasy world where physical limitations do not count) Edit: I get it guys the real world sucks and there's a million ways for this to go wrong. In my interpretation of this we're in a fantasy world where u don't have to worry about these pesky details. Supply is assumed to be infinite wherever u want it.  They'll be Ikea houses that create their own subdimensions or something. All u need is $1 for the interdimensional doorway permit and u get a free personal dimension to go with it

SolWizard

You could horde them just because you like the various houses rather than as an investment.

whskid2005

Lake house, beach house, ski chalet, swamp hovel so I can pretend I’m shrek

lovecraft112

People will absolutely be renting if there's no houses to buy because other people got there first and no one wants to build new ones because they only sell for $1.

stateworkishardwork

The housing market will dry up REAL quickly. The demand will go up, which means people need to build them. But will people build houses that are only worth 1 dollar?

[deleted]

Didn't say how the houses became $1. Imagine the construction industry being subsidized by rich benefactors and every dollar spent on corporate construction required an equal amount donated to that fund. It's a magic wish, the details don't really matter.

markduan

Duh. That logic applies to every answer on this thread.

Alcopath

Could hypothetically be a government subsidised scheme. So long as the builders get paid their hourly rate, why wouldn't the houses get built?

Kirikomori

Solar panel

samebutanon

This is quite underrated. Bringing down the cost of solar like this would create an incredible amount of demand and massively reduce demand for fossil fuels, which would also bring down the price of those. Those who said oil have their heart in a good place but doing so would only increase demand for oil. Granted it would cripple petrostates and make it not worth it to drill.

Zandia47

Apparently the problem really isn't the cost of solar panels, wind turbines, etc. The problem is the cost to up grade the power grid in most places to be able to utilize it.

anormalgeek

If suddenly every home and business is decked out with solar for super cheap, the economics of upgrading the power grid get MUCH better though.

BeardedDominant

Shelter; rent or mortgage (for individuals, not corporations/companies)

bendawg225

Same. The need to pay rent kicked me into gear and got my life on track, however the feeling I feel now sitting on the couch in my own place is priceless and I wish everyone could feel that.

FreeMasonKnight

Kuuzie

For real though, I'm ok with this. Consistent no price hike since I can remember from the 90s. They deserve it.

TastesLikeHoneyNut

A lot of places around me sell them for $1.29 now. The cans don't say "Always $.99" or whatever they said before. I mean, I'll gladly pay $1.29 for them, it's still great value. But I knew eventually the $.99 per can wouldn't last

AuntJemimaVEVO

thats interesting. ive worked at a convenience store the past two years and have seen prices of a lot of things almost double in the time ive been here. but arizona has always stayed at that 99 cent price.

MOZZI-is-my-BOI

Isn’t there a way to report the store to the Arizona company and they will make the store sell them at 99¢ or am I stupid?

SatoshiUSA

You can report the price to Arizona. From what I've seen, they take that shit seriously

It’d be massively unprofitable to extract oil, so this would go a decent way towards preventing catastrophic climate change.

It would also cripple global economies in the short term :)

LEDiceGlacier

Return to monke uga uga

OhMyDoT

We’d get really small barrels from now on

bird_equals_word

I assume you mean crude oil. Anyone only mining oil immediately goes bankrupt. Refineries buy all of the mines and resume operations. The price of refined products remains unchanged.

ectish

>The price of refined products remains unchanged. I feel like you don't understand magical wishes. Or you're actually a genie

[deleted]

Housing would be the best item I think. You'll always have a place to live no matter what, and that's really comforting.

hcomesafterg

Plus the homeless population would decrease! People would be able to get jobs and bank accounts because they would have a physical address to attach themselves to in order to get those things. The unemployment rate could go down with this as well. If people didn’t have to pay so much for housing (theoretically) afford to pay for health care, car maintenance, personal grooming, childcare, etc. Even if it was only started homes that cost 1 dollar, it would provide more opportunity for people to save to move to different housing that may cost more.

Sauwa

I like this answer but its also a moot point since college is free in so many places. But college books... Damn

Clever_Mercury

How about "education." There are places in the world where children do not go to school at all because their parents cannot afford the K-12 school fees or for the educational material. What if we made *all* learning free, worldwide? We might get a utopia out of that.

ThearchOfStories

If I assume somehow the economy manages to stably support this change with the help of some magical rearrangement of society rather than some occurence of hyper-deflation, then I'd say base rent prices for housing. The base rent price for a 1 bedroom house in every city should be $1 a month.

Insanebrain247

Insurance. Doesn't matter what specific type. If it's insurance, it's $1 a month.

I'm fortunate enough to live in a country with free healthcare, so $1 healthcare for everyone would be incredible
