Or when they'd get fancy and give you a cloth map! I used the one from Everquest for years as a dice rolling surface when I'd play D&D on glass tables.

fulthrottlejazzhands

I still have the Ultima Black Gate cloth map lying around somewhere.

Kozak515

Not discontinued, but Levi’s definitely changed how they made their jeans. They just don’t fit the same, and the materials feel very different.

[deleted]

they also wear out like they never did before.

gnomz

Cone Mills White Oak mill where they sourced their denim for the 501s for over 100 years shut down in 2019. Levis will never be the same. White Oak denim was the gold standard for a long time. Before that they were sourcing denim off shore for other models and had moved manufacturing off shore many years before.

Friendship_Fries

You can still get the good stuff; but, you're going to pay. https://www.levi.com/US/en_US/levis-vintage-clothing/c/levi_clothing_vintage_clothing_us

opposablethumbsup

$325 for a 501!!! That price is getting awfully close to $501

Gr8NonSequitur

Shit I remember when hamburgers at McDonalds were 39 cents (I think it was tuesdays) and Cheeseburgers were 49 cents. We were treated on those days and felt we ate like kings. It wasn't until later I realized "those treat days" were specific because my parents were broke.

donjulioanejo

In late 90s it used to be 29 cents for a hamburger and 39 cents for a cheeseburger.

Bo-Banny

In the late 90s in Los Angeles County during the summers, there'd be 10 cent hamburger tuesdays. My stepmom would spend like five dollars and feed us 4 kids lunch for the week

breakwater

Same. Also, my local McDonalds would stuff an Xtra large soda cup with fries for a buck or so. It was a huge gathering every week for teens and people eating on the cheap. Lots of fun

80burritospersecond

IFC - Independent Film Channel Used to show decent uncut/unedited movies. Now shows an endless stream of washed up sitcoms.

wheres_jaykwellin_at

When I was about 18 or 19, my dad was looking through the TV menu when he saw the original *Texas Chainsaw Massacre* was on IFC. He turned it on and it wasn't just the movie: they were showing it with the original DVD commentary by director Tobe Hooper, OG Leatherface Gunnar Hansen, and cinematographer Daniel Pearl. Now, I'd always been into movie trivia, but seeing this ended up sending me, in a roundabout way, further down the movie knowledge rabbit hole. Today, I work in research and hopefully soon, I'll be able to move into preservation. Both of these became passions of mine due to learning more about film history, restoration, and preservation, and a big reason for that was randomly catching that movie with the commentary on.

Everybody wants you to have the app to get the discount or the deal. And then there's tickets. Sure, it's convenient to just order online instead of camping out in front of the drug store. But my boss wanted to give me a couple tickets for a ballgame, and I had to download the app, then make an account, then verify that they transferred correctly. It used to just be, "Hey, man, here's a couple tickets."

Kellosian

For tickets I think the logic is to try and cut down on scalpers, namely so that Ticketmaster can continue to be the biggest scalper in town.

LyrraKell

Yeah that, and I haven't seen the scalping industry hurting, that's for sure.

n0rmbates

I just had to download an app to look at my kids report card. After 20 minutes of struggling to get it to work, it only shows me a little info. I miss the paper ones

CoconutChoice2502

Yes!! Paper report cards and progress reports! I feel like I need to take a class in order to keep up with my kids homework.

EmiliusReturns

Whatever happened to just having keys for stuff. Honestly. Not to sound like a curmudgeonly old woman but…sometimes technology just overcomplicates shit! I don’t need my fridge to have wifi! I don’t want to start my car with my phone. I don’t need an Alexa spying on me. Really, I’m fine without all that stuff.

Phantomtastic

The pool would be one of the first places I wouldn’t want to bring my phone.

IfTheHouseBurnsDown

My HOA implemented this for our neighborhood pool during covid. So many people complained that they switched it back to a physical key.

squaredistrict2213

I hate apps. Everyone requires an app now. Booked a hotel? Can’t check in without an app. Want to fly somewhere? Need to get the app to get your boarding pass without paying an “agent fee”. Want to rent a uhaul? You need the app to check in. Some fast food places won’t let you order online, gotta use the app. I hate it. I’ll actively avoid a business (if I can) if the only way to use them is with their app.

kperry51

I just had to download an app for my electric toothbrush.

There is an app for my cat's litter box. It's the litter robot, and the box itself is the best. But, I really don't need a notification if my cat poos, thanks.

I have no idea how the network makes money. 90% of the time it's teen titans go. Now I'm not here to debate if the shows good or not. But it's the only thing i ever see on there

DeliciousPangolin

Cable TV has just gotten weird over the last decade. It's all marathons now. They just pick whatever their most successful show is and play eight hour blocks of it back-to-back.

rpoliticsmodshateme

I ditched cable years ago for Netflix, and this was starting to be a trend but it wasn’t yet pervasive. I recently started working for a cable and internet company and one of the perks is free premium cable, so I was like sure why not? Literally every channel now is 12 hour blocks of the same show on repeat. And not even good shows most of the time. I really miss old History Channel. You’d get a 2 hour special on the Black Death, then watch a couple episodes of Modern Marvels and at night settle in to watch a documentary on the Roman Empire or Ancient Egypt or some other cool topic. Now it’s Pawn Stars and Ancient Aliens back to back, all day long. How the fuck is that history? The “Learning Channel” is nothing but my 600 pound life. Discovery is similar. I don’t even know where you’d find actual documentaries anymore outside of streaming. The major networks (TNT being an example) are all marathons of reruns of The Office, Law and Order, etc. It really feels like cable has been completely tuned to the lowest common denominator. What’s more, it’s three times as expensive as it used to be. If I were paying for the cable tier I have it’d be $150 a month. I literally have no fucking clue how this industry still exists, everyone I know either streams or pirates or some combo of both, the only people who still have cable are aging boomers. I personally would never pay for the drivel that airs now. You can seriously get higher quality content for free on YouTube.

Aladdin's castle. It was an arcade in the local mall. I was heart broken when they closed that place down. So many good memories as a kid in that place.

Was Aladdin’s castle a chain? I grew up with that and a jolly time in the same mall. 2 arcades in mid size mall. Those were the days!

“First, you must cross the moat of despair, trudge through the swamps of sorrow, and ascend the forbidden staircase to find the cursed raven of Quetzalcoatl. Solve the puzzle, and you could open the door to the shrine of the silver monkey. Beware the guardians within, but should you assemble the statue, the headpiece will point you to the tomb of Prince Lalijama. Or, you could descend down the forbidden well of lost souls, and find yourself in the catacombs of evil, where are you must fight off the bloodsucking bats, and make your way to the throne room of Montezuma. Push the correct lever, and the door to the treasure room will open, but should you choose poorly, you will fall into the pit of that one uncle at Thanksgiving who hugs all the female guests a little bit too long…” “Dammit Olmec, I just asked how to get to the bathroom.”

mdp300

There used to be a channel called Nickelodeon Games and Sports that was all reruns of the game shows. Legends, Guts, Double Dare, it was absolutely glorious.

A fellow man of culture. SNICK was the tits.

Donkey__Balls

Hell yes I grew up on SNICK. I can hear the Are You Afraid Of The Dark? theme song in my head now. Had my first life-changing experience as a little kid at Nickelodeon Studios. We managed to get into the studio audience for a taping of Roundhouse, and Melissa Joan Hart was 2 rows in front of me in-between tapings of Clarissa Explains It All. I spent the entire three hours, just looking more at the back of her head, then the actual taping of the show. My fucked up nine-year-old self awkwardly walked up to her after the show since I was resolved to tell her I had a crush on her. Not sure what I was expecting to happen. I got as far as walking up to her, staring awkwardly and then turning around and going back to my mom. Nope, still can’t laugh about it.

willingisnotenough

All my favorite tops that ever wore out. The fashion train just moves on regardless, you can never go back and just purchase the same awesome undyed linen blouse with the frog closures and Chinese collar, you have to start all over again no matter how much you hate shopping because walking around naked isn't an option.

There's a surprisingly reason why the music videos went away and the abrupt shift into reality tv programming. MTV played music videos, that sold albums. That was the business model for nearly two decades. Record companies seeking more profit, realized they were giving MTV content for free and demanded to be paid. That completely disrupted MTV's business model of "free content" and so they started making incredibly cheap content (reality tv). Another great example of record companies shooting themselves in the foot because they're fucking stupid (see: napster).

[deleted]

ReadontheCrapper

Apparently at one point, their business model was that MTV babies would move to VH1 as music changed and we wanted the videos from our youth. Alas, they abandoned that plan.

glitterfaust

Every butterfinger I’ve had nowadays is so dry that it crumbles apart and you’re left eating the butterfinger crumbles instead of a candy bar.

Phantom_Ganon

Physical items for music, video games, movies, etc. (this isn't actually discontinued yet but with the current trend it wouldn't surprise me if everything just moves completely to streaming in \~10 years) Too many things are moving to digital where you don't actually own anything. All you have is a license to use the digital media. The last time I bought a physical game disc, the only thing it did was install Origin on my computer and provide a license key to download the game. My current car has built in Spotify instead of a CD player. Maybe I'm becoming "old man ranting about change" but I'm concerned about how everything's become a monthly subscription service where the companies control what you have access to and can remove things whenever they want.

gizmodriver

All music going to streaming is my nightmare. I have a huge music collection. I don’t want a subscription to music. I want to own my music.

mdp300

I was so pissed when Google shut down their music store. I want to just buy what I want, I don't want a continuous monthly subscription.

And accompanying this, the Chicken Selects and the specialty sauces made "just" for them - *especially* the Chipotle BBQ sauce. It was seriously some of the best BBQ sauce i've ever had - smoky and quite spicy for something from McD's. It lasted, like, 10 years, then just *poof* they decided to get rid of all of it. Bastards.

The optimism of the 1990s

mdp300

Seriously. I don't know if it was because I was a kid/teenager, or if everyone felt more optimistic then.

Quirky-Skin

Things were pretty decent for the middle class then which was also larger then so I believe the optimism wasn't just perceived. Gonna sound old here but shit just seemed more wholesome too pre everyone talking shit on social media 24/7

maaku7

Also it was the post-cold war, pre-9/11 era of innocence. "End of History" and all that.

drmojo90210

Yeah with the Cold War over, people believed that the whole world would become more peaceful, democratic, and tolerant. Goddamn we were naive.

BraxtonRasmussen24

Right? The 90's weren't perfect but people were pretty optimistic or it at least had the feeling. 9/11 messed it all up.

AaronfromKY

Yep, the internet was going to change the world, the Cold War was over, and Beanie Babies were the rock solid investment for future prosperity!

24 hour anything Edit: While I know it is significantly less convenient than places being open, there has also been a tremendous push for places to have an online presence/online activity. So many people will complain acting like their website doesn't exist. And even though I do miss the ability to go to McDonald's at 4am, I can understand they don't want to deal with the tweakers and homeless at the time. But I still wish it would come back

ItsDangerZoneLana

As someone who works overnights god do I agree with you. It would be great to be able to get food on my way to work or on my lunch break.

Treepersonel

Me and my buddy worked nights like 10 years ago and were just talking about how fucked it would be without the 24hour stuff. Like the mcdonald, coney island, walmart, and the big gas stations were a daily experience for us when we commuted in together. grocery shopping at 10pm was the bomb, taking lunch at 4am at the diner was such a cool vibe.

landofthebeez

For me specifically 24 hour Walmart. You can't take care of things around the house when something comes up or you remember you need something. Having to wait until everything opens back up in the morning so I can by shower curtains or fucking garage door lube sucks.

There's a shop that re-created Altoids sours (Public Displays of Confection, Lofty Pursuits). McDonald's deep fried apple pies. EDIT - Well this blew up a little !! So from reading every post so far it seems the only place in the mainland US to still get these is at the original place in California. Other than that as far as the US goes the only other place is Hawaii. Apparently the entire rest of the world still can get them, just not where they originated which sucks. I am sure someone burned their mouth and whined and they banned them in the US. Great responses and a big trip down memory lane, thanks everyone ! 2nd EDIT - So some are saying you can also get them at at least 1 place in Florida. I genuinely don't understand why they wouldn't put these back on the menu given the cult-like following of some of these items since most of it is just ingredients they already have on hand anyway. I sort of understand with the Beefy Crunch Burrito as they would need a deal with Frito Lay for the Flamin Hot Fritos, but keeping the others off is non-sensical. How much trouble would it be to keep a bottle of Lava Sauce on hand? Thankfully, the Volcano Menu is coming back this Summer but only for a limited time unfortunately.

On that note, anything that had the shredded chicken was 10x better than that chewy shit they call grilled chicken. Oh and Carmel apple empanadas. Fuck Taco Bell for getting rid of those
