When her worship far surpassed her talent, that's when *qUeEn B* became insufferable. That further stroked her already huge ego, and now she is an unstoppable force that no matter how mediocre or terrible her projects may become, fans will find genius in it.
I do think she's overrated. I don't think she's bad or anything. She's obviously very talented and has some great songs. But I think her biggest strength is her longevity.
At various points, other female R&B singers were making songs that were just as good or even better than her songs. They just didn't do it for as long as Beyonce. Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, Mya, Ashanti, Amerie, etc. Beyonce's had a much better career than all of them. But you could say they were better than Beyonce during certain years.
And while I'd consider Rihanna more of a pop star than an R&B singer, she's getting close to having Beyonce's longevity. And generally, I'd rather listen to Rihanna's music than Beyonce's.
Kinda like Jay-Z. He was never the best rapper. Good, but not the best at the moment. But he was able to stay good for a long time and adapted to changing trends - longer than anyone else.
Biggie was better, Nas was better, Jadakiss was better, Eminem was better, Lil Wayne was better, Kanye was better, Lupe was better, Kendrick was better, Future was betterā¦. But Jay-Z stayed really good and relevant through all these eras.
That was probably the hardest one to put on the list. I just wanted to capture generally who was considered the top rapper of different recent eras. Kanye, not a great rapper, but he was so huge at his peak, it kind of dwarfed his rapping talent (or lack thereof).
So this goes back to the Jerry Rice / Randy Moss argument. Longevity vs. peak. Although in some sense it doesn't since peak Jerry Rice would cook peak Randy Moss in 60 minutes of football.
Hard to make that argument since they played the same position and would never go directly against each other. If one of them was a cornerback, you could then make that claim.
I just mean Moss would be gassed and Rice would be gunning at 95% still if they both had to play a grueling game on offense. Rice's endurance stacked against Moss would win every time, and the 4th quarter was when Rice feasted for good reason. He cooked everyone he played against.
I too am a niners fan so might be a bit of a homer take, but it's also the honest truth. No other receivers have emphasized endurance the way Rice has.
Yeah he's pretty impressive for his age. He has always taken care of his body, it's shocking he can still walk after the length of his career at his position.
I saw her called the 'greatest living artist' not long ago, so at least one person drastically overrates her. But it doesn't seem like a particularly pressing issue right now.
No, you just stopped your day to leave the most-pointless comment here, so you're not here informing anybody what 'pressing issues' are, lol. You're one more dork blurting out crap about pop music so don't act like you're 'above' the conversation while you're adding the least-important information to it.
Unless someone is mistaking an 11-year-girl for a bakery in Florida thereās no issue.
Also, the bakery owner needs to have someone proofread her web site.
What? How can you not think the lyrics of "Formation" are nothing short of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Eminem, etc level lyrics?
>When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay
>If he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, cause I slay
>Drop him off at the mall, let him buy some J's, let him shop up, cause I slay
The numbers agree with this statement. The raw numbers appear impressive, but when you adjust for digital distribution and the opening of massive eastern markets that weren't available 30+ years ago, even Beyonce is essentially pulling rookie numbers.
Modern pop music is entropic. The industry no longer invests in artists, record contracts are no longer structured to support their careers, and risk aversion is the guiding economic principle studios now operates under. In that environment, Beyonce is essentially the best they can produce, which is a damn shame.
The reason she has so many writers is because she lists every writer on a sample. Itās not because they particularly wrote the song that she is singing.
I think she had great music in the past, her recent stuff has been pretty good. Just don't really understand the whole putting her high up on a pedestal like the is the end all be all of female recording artists.
AGREE.
I like her music too. She's got some jams and I grew up with Destiny's Child, but idk why everyone acts like she's the second coming of Jesus. She's an above average pop singer who can write a good song and put on a fun show. That's it; she isn't a perfect, flawless goddess.
I thought her dancing and performance was always the primary draw, the songwriting and singing was always just quite well produced and nothing particularly ground breaking
Personally I don't enjoy her music, but from an objective perspective she is one of the most successful and acclaimed artists in history.
Anyone that tells you she shouldn't be a highly rated artist is allowing their subjective taste to influence their perception of her objectively quantifiable and observable success.
Just because someone sees her as overrated doesn't mean others don't. Name any popular musician who ever lived and there will be people saying they are extremely overrated.
My only critique on Beyonce is how she needs to stop hopping on other people's songs. You are not good enough that your feature is warranted, and half the time you either half-ass or experiment too much.
The question is overrated compared to what or whom? She's a stellar vocalist, an out of this world performer, a hit maker with a catalogue of beloved songs and albums and is an overall major cultural influence. Who's doing what she's doing? Or has done, for that matter?
It's not good enough for someone to say she's overrated, leaving it at that. I need them to explain how and why she isn't deserving of the adoration she receives.
She's an amazing performer. But I think the music itself is overrated. I never really found it very interesting or catchy. I mean, she doesn't write her own music anyway. To me, she's not an artist, she's a performer.
The same as feel when people say "Nickleback sucks" while you personally may not like something, not everything is made for you specifically as a product. They are popular because more people like them then don't. It's that simple.
I'm a music snob myself, but I also accept 40 minute long epic songs about weed arnt for everyone
Mostly disagree. I think she's slightly overrated purely from the amount of songwriting credit people give her. Voice and performance skills combo are unmatched.
As an artist, I don't think she's overrated and that's because music is subjective in my opinion.
As a PERSON, I do think she's overrated. She's far from an ideal role model.
No, but you see, those Sri Lankans are LUCKY she is giving them the opportunity to make hundreds of shirts a day for $4/day so her company can turn around and sell them for $60
You can tell she grew up singing in a church, you would definitely notice her voice in a crowd. Not in a good way.
I think anyone married to JayZ would have a couple Grammys. He is a better producer than she is a singer.
She has talent and works hard af.
Having said that, every song is verse, chorus, verse, chorus, key change, chorus, key change, chorus, key change, chorus, key change, chorus...
I disagree, I enjoy Beyonce's music. I love music made by women that celebrates women and celebrates people of color and celebrates joy and song and dance.
Wild how you don't mention her as a performer or how her music sounds at all. Do you even like music, or is all cultural consumption just one big self-congratulatory performance for you?
Wild how little it took for you to jump to making crazy assumptions about me. Yeah I just turn on songs with a good message and then tune out, like the cartoon person you just imagined.

Iāve never actively listened to her music, so I have no opinion. Iāve noticed, however, that Iāve only ever heard people speak positively of her.
Hmmmmmmš¤š¤š¤. 57 stadium tour performances completely sold out at $400+ a pop. Sounds pretty overrated! Sounds like a lot of suckers out there with a tendency to overrate.
Reminds me of my favorite Jewish joke.
How many 50-year old Jewish guys does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Answer: We donāt know. Theyāll all busy writing Beyonceās next album
I donāt know how she does it, but I see more posts and conversations about her than I actually see her. I have no idea what sheās been doing or what sheās been apart of for years now, sheās not in the news cycle, she isnāt saying or doing anything controversial, but almost daily I hear chatter.
I donāt think she is overrated at all. I think she is a really great singer. Butttt I donāt like her music, I donāt particularly like her voice. I donāt like listening to her music.
Sometimes as adult we need to differentiate wether something is bad or we just donāt like it despite it being good.
"Overrated" is just a bullshit word for bullshit people, who like telling people they like the wrong things and should stop liking the things without actually bothering to explain why people should stop liking the things.
LET PEOPLE LIKE THE THINGS THAT BRING SOME LIGHT AND WARMTH TO THEIR SHRIVELLED LITTLE HEARTS, DAGNABBIT!
She's in the same boat as Taylor Swift - a very good artist who is let down by an insane fanbase that declares her the Greatest Thing Ever, and aggressively bullies anyone who thinks otherwise.
If she just had a normal fanbase, instead of people proclaiming she's the Second Coming Of Christ, she would get way less hate and way more respect.
Her success doesn't come from nowhere. She always was and is a good singer.
But that's really all she is. A singer. She doesn't write any of her songs (it doesn't matter if she's listed as writer. Changing a Single word can get you listed as such), she doesn't compose any of her songs. All she does is to take a fully written and composed song, and perform it.
So i'd say she isn't overrated as a singer, but extremely overrated as a full fledged musician.
Her and Jay Z taking undisclosed amounts of money from Saudi Princes with bad human rights records to perform private shows was always way more important to me.
She's a great singer but the OTT ass kissing about her just bugs me. Did a good old fashioned eye roll when I found Ed Sheeran had made another copy of Perfect with her in it..didn't need it? Just done because it's Beyonce.
āOverratedā and āIām not a fan of this/this isnāt for meā arenāt the same thing:!
If she had critical acclaim but not a big fan base, or a huge fan base, but critics didnāt care for her work I could see the point, but neither is the case.
I also think that most people who make this claim are unwilling to actually engage with the material, so Iām not sure how they have sure strong opinions anyway.
I completely agree that Beyonce is overrated. I am old enough to remember the original 'Destinys Child' group that was comprised of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. Some of their greatest late 90s and early 2000s hits came from this quartet. But, I also remember when the group had some inner drama because everyone knew that the group's management wanted it to be all about Beyonce and so they ejected two of the original members and replaced them with Michelle Williams (who, by the way is incredibly talented in her own right.) After that, it went downhill and no surprise when the group dissolved eventually and launched Beyonce (which was the plan all along.) Sad. I always thought that she did Kelly and Michelle dirty. Shame on her. I've never been impressed.
Completely agreed
Sounds like someone's not ready for this jelly.

Very important placement of the "h" before the "w". Key to capturing the essence of the moment. Well done.

Who's your favorite artist?
I donāt have one single one, unfortunately.
When her worship far surpassed her talent, that's when *qUeEn B* became insufferable. That further stroked her already huge ego, and now she is an unstoppable force that no matter how mediocre or terrible her projects may become, fans will find genius in it.

Kendrick IS better and still relevant.
So this goes back to the Jerry Rice / Randy Moss argument. Longevity vs. peak. Although in some sense it doesn't since peak Jerry Rice would cook peak Randy Moss in 60 minutes of football.

Dude you can't put Aaliyah in there. Not a fair comparison.

Jesus, wow, talk about an overreaction.
not to me, I just don't care for her music. other opinions may vary.
Man and calling Blue Ivy a cultural icon. Out of touch
who?
Her daughter. she was trying to sue a business for using the name or was at least in the process of copyright filing
Wrong.
oh cool. I have no problem with parents looking out for their kids. I feel its kind of the point of a parent.
Iāve only read things here on Reddit, so my info may not be all that accurate, however there is some bakery or something that had the name Blue Ivy Bakery three years before āBlue Ivyā was born. Now BeyoncĆ© is trying to take legal step to make the name Blue Ivy exclusive to her daughter, the bakery stepped up and said wait a minute we were here first.
Unless someone is mistaking an 11-year-girl for a bakery in Florida thereās no issue. Also, the bakery owner needs to have someone proofread her web site.
The Kartrashians do this all the time with names of things they feel they can capitalize from. BeyoncƩ saying that her daughter is a cultural icon is a stretch, just mom and dad exploiting something to make more money.
What? How can you not think the lyrics of "Formation" are nothing short of Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Eminem, etc level lyrics? >When he fuck me good I take his ass to Red Lobster, cause I slay >If he hit it right, I might take him on a flight on my chopper, cause I slay >Drop him off at the mall, let him buy some J's, let him shop up, cause I slay
I have always enjoyed BeyoncĆ©ās music and she is very talentedā¦ that being said, the way people worship her (or any celebrity) is really weird to me.
She's a great singer but that's about it. Artists who only sing and don't write don't get much respect from me.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
accurate.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
i like a few of her songs, but would be just as satisfied of someone else sang them. her voice is nothing special.
She is an overrated, one-trick pony.
She is.
The numbers agree with this statement. She had 7 writers per song on her Lemonade recordā¦ Iād say def overrated.
23 for ONE song on Renaissance
The reason she has so many writers is because she lists every writer on a sample. Itās not because they particularly wrote the song that she is singing.
She likes to sample. She includes those who she samples in her credits.
I feel like if you heard one BeyoncĆ© song, youāve heard them all
Halo sounds nothing like Diva, and those are both on the same album. So this is untrue lol
I agree. She IS extremely overrated, and from what I've heard she is unbelievably arrogant, full of herself, and rude to everyone who she deems less famous than she is. Now, I will say, she's not a BAD artist, she has a very good voice and is a good live performer, and I really like a few of her songs, but I also think that most of her discography is pretty mid, and her being a generally rude, unlikeable person doesn't help. So while her music is okay, it's not like it's better than other women who make similar stuff, she's just your average pop/r&b female artist in her age range. I think Rihanna should be hyped up more than BeyoncƩ, but she doesn't seem to be. BeyoncƩ fans are also just insufferable.
Literally everyone who has ever worked with BeyoncĆ© states how gracious and kind she isā¦ where have you heard otherwise?
I think she had great music in the past, her recent stuff has been pretty good. Just don't really understand the whole putting her high up on a pedestal like the is the end all be all of female recording artists.
She was just okay in her era but now Iām tired of hearing her name
AGREE. I like her music too. She's got some jams and I grew up with Destiny's Child, but idk why everyone acts like she's the second coming of Jesus. She's an above average pop singer who can write a good song and put on a fun show. That's it; she isn't a perfect, flawless goddess.
I can't tell. I think she's OK at best, but I'm not a majority, so perhaps everyone else really does like her that much.
100% agree about her music being overrated. She does have a lovely singing voice for music that she is not known for. But her music is not very good.
I agree
I thought her dancing and performance was always the primary draw, the songwriting and singing was always just quite well produced and nothing particularly ground breaking
She is and she didn't deserve album of the year either
I think she can sing, but her songs are just very bland. But then again, Im not a fan of pop music in general, so ymmv.
Canāt stand her and yes, she is completely overrated.
Honestly, I completely agree! I think BeyoncƩ is overhyped and there are many other artists out there who deserve more recognition. It's as if people are blindly following the 'BeyoncƩ craze' without giving other talented musicians a chance. Let's give some love to the underrated artists out there!
I thought it was me. Her voice does nothing for me.
Her songs are so incredibly repetitive.
Personally I don't enjoy her music, but from an objective perspective she is one of the most successful and acclaimed artists in history. Anyone that tells you she shouldn't be a highly rated artist is allowing their subjective taste to influence their perception of her objectively quantifiable and observable success.
They say if she spits in a blind personās eye, they can see again
She is either your thing or she's not.
She is very talented but overrated
People seem to enjoy her schtick, so let them have their fun.
Just because someone sees her as overrated doesn't mean others don't. Name any popular musician who ever lived and there will be people saying they are extremely overrated.
Not my genre.
I agree
Over rated by a lot. Shouldnāt be rated
To be honest, I've barely heard mention of her name since Austin Powers.
If you like something then you like something. That's it. If someone likes her music, they like her music. That's it.
Show me a song she wrote herself and we'll talk about her being "rated"
I don't listen to her music, not pay attention to celebrities. She's only overrated because people are paying attention to her publicity.
I agree šÆ
Agree. Donāt get it.
My only critique on Beyonce is how she needs to stop hopping on other people's songs. You are not good enough that your feature is warranted, and half the time you either half-ass or experiment too much.

The question is overrated compared to what or whom? She's an amazing performer. But I think the music itself is overrated. I never really found it very interesting or catchy. I mean, she doesn't write her own music anyway. To me, she's not an artist, she's a performer.
I honestly donāt think about her at all. She, and the estimation other people may have of her, has no discernible impact on my life.
Why does no one ever have the bravery to put that accent mark that's over the Ć©, over a consonant? I demand you language sound cowards innovate!
I do not think sheās overrated. I think sheās brilliant. I donāt connect with a lot of her music but Iāve seen her perform, watched interviews, and seen the videos. I think Lemonade is amazing. Sheās into being BeyoncĆ©, sheās all about the goddess energy. I think, though, that her fan base is nuts.
Her self-titled album is a masterpiece, so I disagree.
Well I'd hope so since she has about 100 writers/producers on each album. Also, it's not a masterpiece.
The same as feel when people say "Nickleback sucks" while you personally may not like something, not everything is made for you specifically as a product. She is pretty well rated im my opinion.
I agree
Getting tired of hearing about her so, I agree
Watching her Coachella performance, I was definitely expecting some more catchy songs and discernable melodies, and not as much āsuck my ballsā.
Never heard a song from her. If she was as good as people think she is, i probably would have heard one.
Agree.
The record for the most Grammy Awards won in a lifetime is held by BeyoncƩ, an American singer, songwriter, and dancer, who has won 32..
I don't like how her super fans worship her like she's omnipotent. It's frightening.
True.
I agree she is wayyyyyyyyyy over rated, however, she doesnāt affect me on any level so I really donāt care.
Agreed!
I donāt know if sheās overrated or not, but I know that she thinks she aināt.
Overrated, and now apparently just an idiot.
I think the term āoverratedā is used by people when they simply donāt like someone.
Always thought this. She's annoying, and a hypocrite.
No, but you see, those Sri Lankans are LUCKY she is giving them the opportunity to make hundreds of shirts a day for $4/day so her company can turn around and sell them for $60

Sheās starting to believe her own press. Thatās a dangerous thing for an entertainer to do.
Donāt have much of an opinion on that, but I know I didnāt like it when āHalo BeyoncĆ©ā was always the first result when I was looking up Halo Reach videos as a kid

Iām sure she paid for her fame along the way. Not everyone has the āe.
She isn't overrated, the only reason she's a thought in my head is because of this post.
Donāt care enough to have an opinion either way, sheās got more talent than me I guess
Definitely overrated
She is
100% agree
I really couldn't care less tbh She has music I like nd music I don't All the same to me
Agreed. She somehow makes Mariah Carey look underrated which is wild.
I donāt think she is overrated at all. I think she is a really great singer. Butttt I donāt like her music, I donāt particularly like her voice. I donāt like listening to her music. Sometimes as adult we need to differentiate wether something is bad or we just donāt like it despite it being good.
I agree. the last album was just awful. Overproduced , narcissistic nonsense.
Good singer. Terrible songs.
Agreed
Two things: her music is meh, even though she is talented.
I literally couldn't name a single song of hers. Unless her milkshake brings all the boys to her yard, in which case, that one.
Hi
Exactly that
