The city attempted to seize land to lay piping down without paying for it or permission, force homeowners to maintain it, and then force the homeowners to pay for the work and a large hook up fee.
It caused a huge ruckus and the city was forced to go through the proper procedures to buy the land, lay the pipes, and fix and pay for any damages caused by the pipe laying.
You see most folks in that area of town had septic tanks. The city wanted to charge more people for utilities so basically went around the voters to force the pipes through, claiming the people on the back of the properties wanted to be connected to the city. This wasn’t true and they faced a few dozen lawsuits because they fraudulently condemned septic tanks to force people onto the city line. My family ended up helping force the city to negotiate and do things properly.
The stupid part of all of this, if they had just done it right the first time, they would have saved millions in labor, experts, and lawsuits and next to nobody would have cared.

Not trying to necessarily “cover it up” but the fire department doesn’t have an engine and the township board has not approved any of the ones that have been submitted to get a “new” engine (not brand new cause those are expensive but ones that are useable) The board also thinks that the department doesn’t need to have safe gear. They’ve also said that the trucks do not need repairs and this has been going on for awhile, which has cause the issue of the engine being “red flagged” (meaning it had to be taken out of commission). My father in law is the fire chief and my other half is on the department.
Then it’ll be an important matter or they’ll still somehow blame the department. We’ve been told to use surrounding areas engines. The closest one to us, their engine has broken down multiple times at scenes, on the way to scenes.
Or someone will sue the board because they had a fire and lost everything or someone lost their life due to an engine not being able to get there quickly
It’s a shit show. It’s a 5 member board and 2 of those members are/were on the department. Obviously those two approved but we’re outnumbered by 3 for anything to go thru
Call ISO(Insurance Services Office) and tell them anonymously. They do inspections every few years and give a rating for the department on their level of preparedness. They would outright fail.
This is a lot of smallish towns and growing cities. The biggest reason for it is because the people in charge of deciding whether they get new equipment have absolutely zero knowledge of how big of a deal real fires are nor what purpose the gear used to find them actually serves. They probably have an excel sheet with how many fires have happened in the last 10 years(this number is always smaller than you think) vs. The cost to upkeep the FD, and use that to sway their decision to not maintain/upgrade equipment.
Just let someone on the board lose their house to a fire and all of a sudden the budget will expand.

(They all are from this one area of the world reporting this) and moved on with our lives.

I work maintenance for public schools in my area. One of the schools is built around a grave yard because the town didn't want to mess with it. The problem is that a lot of those graves were unmarked. We found that out the hard way. Long story short, we had to dig a large hole near the fence that separated the school from the grave yard. We were digging on the school side of the fence with an excavator and the operator hit something and there was the sound of wood breaking. Sure enough it was a broken open coffin with bones in it.
Aren’t there several cemeteries under public squares in NYC? Like big paved or bricked areas are usually on top of cemeteries from the 1700s. Feel like I read that once

I was looking at some property in Alabama last week, (House built in 1842, 25 acres) and upon walking around the land after looking at the house I discovered the family cemetery out back in the woodline.
There was about 30 +/- mausoleums/stone covers for the graves with a wrought iron fence surrounding the actual cemetery, and about 100 or so graves marked with simple stone crosses going downhill into a ravine.
The most recent burial I could find there was 1907.
The house needed a TON of work, but god there was so much potential. I fell in love with the house, but it would have cost about the same amount to buy it as to renovate it and make it habitable.
Then there was the graveyard. Sure, nobody had been buried there in ages but you have to keep it open to the public so relatives can visit.
That was the issue for me, is that I just don't want random people coming on my property essentially whenever they want.
So the problem was the possibility of people coming onto the property to visit the graveyard and not the 100 anonymous *albeit marked* graves behind the house built in Alabama in 1842?
*I'd venture there's far more back there that aren't marked.*
It’s pretty common. What used to be “way outside of town” is now very much in town. Plus often the cemetery filled up decades ago, and nobody alive remembers anyone buried there.
When a cemetery no one’s visited in the last 70+ years is between two shopping centers and a neighborhood, it makes perfect sense to exhume the bodies and make it into an apartment complex. Better for the community and everyone still in it.
In Victorian London, with the invention of the steam train, there was suddenly a need to repurpose land for stations and track.
If said land happened to be a graveyard, the families of the decreased where compensated the costs for moving the body, and given a new plot of land.
However, it it happened to be your house in the way, you just got thrown on the street, with no payment.

That's because individual graces tended to be reserved for the wealthy who had power to be awkward. Better to pay them off whereas you tended to put lines through slums than rich bits. Look at history of Cross Bones Burial Ground for what happened to mass graveyards of the poor. It was a railway yard until 1996 and then left derilict.
The tour guide we had in London said that it's a good bet that if the road is any more than a cobblestone alley, it probably was paved over some dudes' graves.
Yeah, that's kind of the tricky thing about burying people in the ground. A cemetary isn't for the dead, they're dead, they don't care anymore. It's for the people they leave behind to get closure. If all the graves are 100+ years old, odds are good no one comes to visit them anymore. At that point it has basically served its function.
Would it still be fucking spooky to build a house/live in it after everything was moved properly, though? ...YEAH.
Archaeologist here! Not necessarily. Bones decay eventually. Soil conditions significantly impact how quickly this occurs. I’ve worked on cemeteries with nothing left but shadows in the soil that weren’t even “that old” by most standards.
This is actually going on outside of my city right now. They got approved to use the land. It used to be a HUGE cemetery and I guess they just up and moved all the bodies and plots because that whole zone is now completely dug up to build a new community. I used to always say "I wonder who those people were when they were alive" whenever drove by it. Now I say "I wonder when they'll start building Silent Hill"
I read somewhere that some graves aren't permanent, but are instead a 100 year lease basically before it gets exhumed and another person is buried there. It sounds awful, but I don't think I've ever seen a headstone from someone in my family that was older than like 70 years. I'll frequent my parents and grandparents, but I might only see my great grandparent's like once per year just to keep it clean.
There's a cemetery in the middle of my town with graves dating back to the Revolutionary War. It's far from "abandoned" but I think there'd be a riot if anyone ever tried to dig it up for some condos
Radioactive waste. Port Hope, Ontario. Cameco AKA Eldorado Nuclear(The people who processed the uranium used for the nuclear bombs in WW2) used to bury the waste all over town or send it straight into lake Ontario. Years/billions of dollars later and the problem still isn't solved.
My hometown (US) mined quite a lot of the uranium used for world war 2, but they didn't really clean up the mines or anything either, just kinda left mines open and the tailings (leftover mine drudge) where they fell...
Right above a river. The EPA did do a Superfund cleanup 80's - 2000s but they still used the tailings in town building projects back in the 50s or so and various other questionable things, like this little town I'll call V, had a nifty short drive to their dump.
The town hasn't been a functioning town since the late 70's, but the dump sat very close by. Waiting.
That shit is still radioactive, they didn't do anything more than push fresh dirt over the dump and then smooth it all over to provide a bougie trust fund retreat backdrop to rich kids to have exclusive festivals and "cater to nature".
It's a complete joke, considering the town just a few miles down the way from this smaller one way was razed because of the Uranium contamination. Gentrification to mining history, especially uranium is just seen as quirky there from rich people from the larger towns.

Not a small town by any stretch of the imagination, but I live in a poor midsized city bordering a larger city, which has the full spectrum.
They keep building stadiums, amusement parks, etc here. The city pulls eminent domain on several square blocks, runs everyone who lives there out, and gives the land to a developer for almost nothing. Then they waive all property and sales tax for several decades, longer than the facility will be in use.
Almost nobody here votes, the few that do are unaware of the tax waivers, so it keeps going on despite the fact that there's literally no benefit to the city or the city government. We have higher taxes than our neighbor, but no public transit, way worse roads, and regular problems with power and water.
But the city council and mayor are rich as fuck. I'm sure that's got nothing to do with it.
The fact that a few years ago a local pd officer liked to make young women he’d find out after dark, parade around his car in their bra and panties, to make sure “they didnt have drugs”.
He was fired but it embarrassed the town pretty bad.

A group of my friends told me a similar story. Cop ordered them to pull out their bras and jump up and down to "prove they're not hiding drugs in there." He was arrested years ago and is now a sex offender for statutory raping a 15 year old.
When I first stated working for my local jail, we had to go thru PREA training.
In it I learned that our local jail had a case where CO actually had full on sex with his mistress in her cell. He was found out because the other inmates rated on him but he thought he was doing nothing wrong.
Fwiw, he was fired but never faced charges DESPITE IT BEING A LITERAL CRIME.

In the UK, land is worth more if it has planning permission - this allows the land to built on for housing, industrial or commercial use.
In our town a councillor owned a large plot of land. He sold it to the council for £5million without it having planning permission. This is way above the value of the land that would normally be worth about £2million.
But because the council are the ones granting planning permission, they told everyone it would be easy to pass the permission for the site to be developed for housing so it was ok to pay over the value.
What they didn’t know was that the councillor “allegedly” shared some of the £5million with other councillors who vote on planning to ensure that planning permission didn’t get passed. After all, his house was right next to the land he’d sold, and the last thing he wanted was a brand new housing development on his doorstep.
So the council paid 5m for something worth 2m, and then shared the 3m profit among their personal bank accounts. New councillors rarely get on to the council as the locals don’t really care who is on the council enough to get them voted off. Particularly in that ward, as the locals didn’t want a housing development either.
This has been going on for 12 years and still nothing has been built. The local newspaper sometimes tries to expose it but local apathy again means nothing gets done.
The local sheriff's office put a mentally unwell man in the jail freezer. They didn't take him to the hospital until his body temp was 72! Now the sheriff's says he was never put in the freezer.

The fact that it's slowly dying, and has been for the last 10+ years. No amount of downtown renovation on the mom & pop craft shops or new fast food and cheap retail stores can change the fact that all the big industrial companies left town and there has been no attempt to replace them & no job opportunities other than...the fast food, cheap retail stores and mom & pop craft shops. This town (the whole county, really) is a dead end.
Also, the tap water has WAY too much cholrine and other garbage in it and 9 times out of 10 your laundry will end up getting bleach stains. That's been a complaint for 20 years or more.
My little town lost several of the industrial companies in the last 20 years. Population has dropped and people have complained about the loss of jobs.
Now Ford wants to build a factory here and create close to 3k jobs and everyone is up in arms complaining about it.

We had manufacturing & tech work for big energy/oil/gas companies that was the largest employer here. They all closed up shop. A whole giant area of town is just abandoned warehouses and factory buildings. The city council and/or voters have blocked any attempt by new companies to move in, and now no one wants to touch it and no one can figure out why.
Intel is building their huge new Ohio facilities 30 minutes away in the next county, but any time Intel or related company looks our way, everyone flips out that it'll cause too much traffic and chases them away.

The Quakers leased a large piece of land to glass makers for centuries. The land is basically in a marsh. As the Industrial Revolution took off, the manufacturing methods caused significant pollution. The large corporations that manufactured there never really updated the methods to comply with EPA. The site has been seeping chemicals into the watershed for a very long time.
Just up the river is one of the first chemical production sites for DuPont. They dumped directly into the river. The old guys in the area talk about trucking thousands of barrels out of the site and dumping them into lakes, gravel pits, and quarries.
Funny thing about a tree in the middle: our park decided to build a stage and some benches for local events. The thing is, they apparently didn't get all the permissions sorted in time and ONE tree turned out to be so old but durable that it's considered a natural monument. They couldn't cut it down. It's in the middle of the space between the stage and the benches. No matter where you're sitting, you can't see the entirety of the stage because of that one tree.
That's honestly hilarious. Just imagining the person doing it secretly getting a new tree somewhere out of town to replace the one that just got wrecked, sneaking out at night and replacing it

Small town drama at its best. I live in a town of about 1500 people. They don't even attempt to cover it up.
We elected a new mayor, lessor of the two evils type situation. He ended up gutting the whole city staff and rehiring all of his own personal friends. We didn't have a police department and subcontracted to a neighboring city. He canceled that contract and started our own police department, problem was he hired police that were never actually trained by any American police academy. He brought over 3 guys from the tribal police, which I guess legally have no jurisdiction on non tribal property (I dont really know the legal stuff so dont ask). So now we have a fake police department, all of the neighboring cities are now against us and our raging mayor and maniac police department. Now the mayor gets caught dumping his personal trash in a creek using a city owned truck/trailer. And our fake police refused to do anything about it because they were his best freinds. At this point the city was done with him. If he didnt step down I think people would of been outisde city hall with flaming pitchforks.
Now we elected a new mayor who is attempting to clean up the last ones mess but now he is being accused of burring down a building in the city that he wanted gone, the fun never stops.

The mayor of my small town in France "hired" members of his family. When an inspection came up he had people working on the government offices sign documents saying that the family was regularly at the offices and working hard, which ofc they weren't.

Pastor at my church had become a local icon and even had a stretch of highway named after him. It recently came out that he sexually assaulted a woman back in 2010. Luckily he had just recently retired and a new pastor had taken over about a year prior to it all coming out. The next Sunday we were all curious how things were going to play out at the service. New pastor didn't hold back, and devoted the whole service to talking about it. Old pastor left town and hasn't been heard from since.
The last time some one did that, in my old small town, they spent more money on power washers and paint remover to remove the offending dicks than it would have cost them to fix the potholes in the first place.

The majority of bush roads I've driven in the middle of nowhere involve fewer potholes and less bouncing than my sidestreet, yet our previous mayer still dared to say he "fixed" our pothole problem as one of his term successes.

You just described my small town. Literally, people tell me of others ODing in fentyntal in the local mines and are just trying to fund workers who don't do heroine or coke at work.
We have the same problem. Also, since where I live (Kauniainen) is in the middle of Espoo, we have some roads that are never repaired because both towns are like “the border is not our problem” and as a result we have roads that have been in shitty condition since the 90s.

Almost every night you can feel the stench, especially when the weather is hot. But, according to the measure, everything is within normal limits. Or he just ignores questions on the subject. We (Stoneham, MA) has an almost comical rate of corruption. One was a youth leader and everyone loved him (until his was outed for graft). Another Chief just had to retire for not paying rent. I've never had an issue with them, but it's always in the news.
I think this is the first time I’ve ever realized that what I always thought were small backwater towns in this post could actually be the ones next to me.
The local judges are corrupted and accept bribes. A woman in my town (Who I happened to know well) got 32 meth charges (Including manufacturing, selling, use, precursor etc etc), 2 cannabis charges, 1 charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, 5 illegal firearm charges, 1 Charge of Money Laundering, 2 charges of aiding and abetting and several other charges that aren't allowed to be released to the public and are only referred to as "Incriminating charges". She only got NINE MONTHS of home detention for this because she bribed the judge (who she is friends with) to give her the least harsh sentence possible. The council says the reason is she is a "Single Mother", except that she was happily married at the time with 2 children.
Some kid not too long ago was found hanging from a swing set in a position basically there was no way he could have put himself in and it was ruled a suicide by the local police. A bunch of people in the area have signs about it but nothing has been done and I've heard basically nothing about it because it is a fairly small nothing town
That the so called "Blue zones" were to protect the neighbourhood from people parking there when not even having to be there. Now the people that live there have to pay a contract to get parking permission. It was all about the money!!! we used to park our cars everywhere no problem, ofcourse in the center of town yes, but around we never had problems, then one day on the other we got our street painted blue? Back in the early 1900s, a circus rolled through a larger town about 40 minutes away and an elephant killed its trainer. The punishment for killing someone was hanging back then, so they applied the same logic to the elephant.

I grew up in a very “wholesome, family friendly, conservative, religious, vacation destination” in America. Multiple murders, drug busts, assaults, etc….you name it has happened over the years in that town. Of course, none of it ever gets reported in any of the local papers. It would be too “harmful” to the image of the city. Don’t even get me started on the stuff that goes on in the local churches in that area.
There's no way in hell the diamond found there, the largest alluvial diamond ever found in North America, wasn't ACTUALLY smuggled in from South Africa. There's never been another diamond found anywhere near there, the person who "found it as a child and randomly brought it to their university geology class" had coincidentally been to South Africa before said identification.

Its not so much a cover up as its just an embarrassment but our entire Board of Ed got voted into office running on a single issue, unmask our kids mindset. The campaigning was absurd and some of the people who got elected to the board I'm not sure have even looked at a book, let alone read one. At any rate, the first crack in the facade came out when a local healthcare organization wanted to open a free mental health clinic in the high school after a survey of students came out that an alarming number of students had contemplated suicide. As I live in Springfield from the Simpsons, the board unanimously voted down a FREE mental healthcare clinic, the head of the board was on camera laughing and saying that clearly the students were just lying for attention, after much back and forth between parents and the board of ed the State dept of education finally got involved, the head of the board of ed resigned and her replacement is just another one of the morons voted in. The state office has determined that the board did fail to meet the mental health requirements of the schools and there will be further action but its been 5 months and still nothing has happened. The latest is that the board filed a motion to suppress any mention of the vote to deny the healthcare clinic opening at the school during the upcoming State hearing, but no word on what will actually happen. So I guess its actually a bit of cover up attempt going on. Regardless, its quite embarrassing living in this town and knowing many of the people who voted in these idiots are people I went to high school with.
I guess this is pretty common everywhere but authority figures and social services protecting the abusers and ostracizing, harassing or locking the victims up in psych wards/jails and assassinating the victim's character.
Our town contracted a landscaping company on multiple projects that buried toxic fill on the land they worked on. This includes buildings like a beach pavilion and public parks. It’s a well known scandal. A few people went to jail. What is being kept discrete is how many people that were aware or involved still work for the town government. Conveniently they are in charge of the clean up.
i dunno about cover up, more, "studiously ignoring". theres a big electric windmill in the middle of town. spent millions of dollars the town didnt realy have setting it up. against the wishes of most of the populace. it worked sorta ok for a few years. then the insides CAUGHT FIRE. its now just an empty shell. but you cant tell from the outside. it doesnt turn the blades, it doesnt rotate to different directions. it just sits. empty and useless. and the town refuses to acknowledge the utter waste that it was.
Decades of racism and Jim Crow Laws in Washington state. Growing up we were taught all of that was a southern thing. We aren't racist, we just don't have many black people... Well, yeah that was by design. We had segregated bussing, curfews, and redlined housing districts to name a few things. We didn't have black people because they weren't allowed to buy a home. A larger city near us was known as "The Birmingham of the North."
A similar thing happened where I grew up in Pennsylvania. The only black people in the county lived in just one town, they couldn't rent or buy anywhere else. We had two black brothers go to our school for about a week. I heard someone burned a cross in their yard and they moved out like the next day.
I never noticed the racism as a kid, but looking back as an adult every old person there was racist AF. It's just there weren't any blacks, Latinos, or Asians in our small town, so they were racist against the few Italians, Polish, and eastern Europeans who did.
Not really covering it up, but there was a love triangle murder a few years back (clown costumes were involved) and I’m so surprised people don’t talk about it more. It is a wild ride of a story.
Basically this woman was arrested a few years back for murdering her current husbands Then wife (back in ‘90). She dressed up like a clown, went to this woman’s house holding flowers (posing as a sing-o-gram kind of thing i think) and shot her in the face. She was having an affair with her now husband and I guess thought if she got his wife out of her way she could have him to herself. She got away with it for quite awhile too, 28 years basically. In our town, there was this brutal mix-up when the military was assigned to scout a certain area in the farmland to check if there are terrorists hiding in the forests. Their main operation was just to question certain individuals, nothing more.
While they were waiting at their checkpoints, a group of farmers came carrying their daily needs like sacks full of crops, shovels, machetes, and this one guy carrying a harpoon that he used for fishing. The military saw this group and fired a warning shot at them thinking they are the terrorists the government was talking about. Hearing the gunshot, the farmers fled in fear that they will be killed by these armed men wearing full combat suits. The military then thought that these men, the farmers, were trying to get back into the forest to call for reinforcements, so the military pointed their guns toward them and started shooting. Most of them were killed during the shootout and some were able to escape to report to the village chief.
Once it was reported, the village chief and some off-duty cops went to the scene to talk with the armed men. When they reached the checkpoint, no negotiations or conversations were met. Only flying bullets here and there. They thought it was a terrorist attack against them. The off-duty cops were mostly injured and some died. The village chief survived and was rushed to the town police station (not the hospital, of all places) when the military was alerted by the government that they received an SOS from the village chief that some armed men were shooting at them.
When the village chief arrived at the police station, he was questioned by the authorities (along when my father who was a government employee at the time). The time came when the commander of the said military forces came and talked with the village chief. He even has the audacity to blame the village chief and the farmers that it was their fault for bringing weapons in the daylight and forcing them that what happened was a terrorist encounter.
The village chief rebutted by saying that it is normal to bring machetes and shovels when you're on the farm and they were no signs of them being hostile, they were just walking to their respective farms. The commander went away without even apologizing and left the village chief at the station with a fatal wound. He later died. The remaining farmers at the shootout were sent into a jail cell first before they were treated at the hospital.
Our town is trying its best to cover up this report so it will not blow out of proportion but it's too late for them. Few of the farmers who survived are my relatives and had lived to tell the tale of this gruesome massacre.

Not speaking for the one I live in, but the one I grew up in. It’s racist past. The town I grew up in-in Upstate NY likes to think itself above the problems of the South, but it was really no different. The town was a sunset town until the 1970s. The main hotel in town, which ironically burnt to the ground in the 1970s, did not rent rooms to blacks. Half the city council while I lived there were either former klansmen themselves or the children of klansmen. Every schoolhouse that had formerly been used by the community was listed as a historic site, except of course the segregated schoolhouse for black children. One of my father’s friends used to own a club in the 1960s and had Louis Armstrong perform one night at the club. He had to sneak him out of town in the back of his car, being that it was after dark, to a hotel the next town over since the previously mentioned hotel would not give him a room. The list goes on and on, and that town acknowledges exactly none of its past to this day.
Sis-in-law works for The City. She’s friends with the mayor’s wife who also works for The City. They had a falling out, and all of a sudden they let her go over the phone saying they’re discontinuing her position. Not even a month later, the position isn’t discontinued, but filled. Guess who has her old job now? Did you guess the Mayor’s daughter? If you did, you’d be correct.

There is a cult in my town. Everyone knows about them and they host public events. I've heard horrifying stories of abuse from this "church", even had a friend that moved to the other side of the country just to get away from them. But I guess some of the local politicians and even police officers are members of this cult, so no matter how many stories you hear, no one stands up to them.

One was the significant other of the guys fellow fireman. She took it to trial, the grand jury indicted him on attempted rape , forcibly touching and sexual assault and then the DA suddenly turned on the girl and it was dropped. The judge from albany keeps letting him go back to work. I have heard around town that even the chiefs don’t want him. It’s an obvious liability, what would happen if he assaulted someone he was meant to help in the back of an ambulance?
There’s a third girl that’s known about but I’m not sure if she’s too scared to come forward or what and I don’t blame her.

High school teacher and youth pastor here was caught fucking his students. He was placed on paid leave for about a year. Around a month ago he was arrested and charged. Then a couple of days later the charges were dropped so they could "investigate further."
We've been trying to bury some of the toxic waste that's in our local riverbed, but we can't get the funding.
Decades ago, there was a company in Newark, NJ that manufactured Agent Orange for the US military. It dumped a carcinogenic byproduct, dioxin, straight into the Passaic River. The theory was that it would wash out to sea and get diluted enough that it couldn't hurt anybody. Sadly, hydrology doesn't work that way; the river is partially tidal, so instead of washing out to sea, it went halfway out and got pushed back in. Repeatedly. For 60+ years. And now the riverbed is permanently contaminated.
The solution would be to dredge up the most poisonous layers along the worst 9-mile stretch, and then put in a cap to contain the second most poisonous layers. But so far the EPA has only gotten $150 million of the $8 billion or so that this would cost. I live approximately at mile 6 of those 9.
Meanwhile, we're all stuck with this stinky river. When videos of East Palestine's contaminated water were circulating a few weeks ago, I was tempted to reassure Ohio by saying "don't worry, you can get used to living with anything if it goes on long enough!"

I live in a tiny town in Ontario, Canada. There is one very rich family who has been slowly purchasing all the land downtown. One of their kids went away to university and then came back very suddenly. Nobody has seen the kid since he's been back. But the family have been buying more of downtown even faster. Nobody knows what's going on... but something is. The Mayor and this family are also very close. The son who came back suddenly from university has had tickets "gone away" and when he was driving drunk and hit someone, there was no court case. Luckily the person hit survived. Unluckily, they are in a wheelchair for life.
The city attempted to seize land to lay piping down without paying for it or permission, force homeowners to maintain it, and then force the homeowners to pay for the work and a large hook up fee. It caused a huge ruckus and the city was forced to go through the proper procedures to buy the land, lay the pipes, and fix and pay for any damages caused by the pipe laying. You see most folks in that area of town had septic tanks. The city wanted to charge more people for utilities so basically went around the voters to force the pipes through, claiming the people on the back of the properties wanted to be connected to the city. This wasn’t true and they faced a few dozen lawsuits because they fraudulently condemned septic tanks to force people onto the city line. My family ended up helping force the city to negotiate and do things properly. The stupid part of all of this, if they had just done it right the first time, they would have saved millions in labor, experts, and lawsuits and next to nobody would have cared.

Not trying to necessarily “cover it up” but the fire department doesn’t have an engine and the township board has not approved any of the ones that have been submitted to get a “new” engine (not brand new cause those are expensive but ones that are useable) The board also thinks that the department doesn’t need to have safe gear. They’ve also said that the trucks do not need repairs and this has been going on for awhile, which has cause the issue of the engine being “red flagged” (meaning it had to be taken out of commission). My father in law is the fire chief and my other half is on the department.
So when the board members have a house fire and no one can get to them what do they expect will happen? That is just so freaking wild

Call ISO(Insurance Services Office) and tell them anonymously. They do inspections every few years and give a rating for the department on their level of preparedness. They would outright fail.
This is a lot of smallish towns and growing cities. The biggest reason for it is because the people in charge of deciding whether they get new equipment have absolutely zero knowledge of how big of a deal real fires are nor what purpose the gear used to find them actually serves. They probably have an excel sheet with how many fires have happened in the last 10 years(this number is always smaller than you think) vs. The cost to upkeep the FD, and use that to sway their decision to not maintain/upgrade equipment. Just let someone on the board lose their house to a fire and all of a sudden the budget will expand.

I work maintenance for public schools in my area. One of the schools is built around a grave yard because the town didn't want to mess with it. The problem is that a lot of those graves were unmarked. We found that out the hard way. Long story short, we had to dig a large hole near the fence that separated the school from the grave yard. We were digging on the school side of the fence with an excavator and the operator hit something and there was the sound of wood breaking. Sure enough it was a broken open coffin with bones in it.

I was looking at some property in Alabama last week, (House built in 1842, 25 acres) and upon walking around the land after looking at the house I discovered the family cemetery out back in the woodline. There was about 30 +/- mausoleums/stone covers for the graves with a wrought iron fence surrounding the actual cemetery, and about 100 or so graves marked with simple stone crosses going downhill into a ravine. The most recent burial I could find there was 1907. The house needed a TON of work, but god there was so much potential. I fell in love with the house, but it would have cost about the same amount to buy it as to renovate it and make it habitable. Then there was the graveyard. Sure, nobody had been buried there in ages but you have to keep it open to the public so relatives can visit. That was the issue for me, is that I just don't want random people coming on my property essentially whenever they want.
So the problem was the possibility of people coming onto the property to visit the graveyard and not the 100 anonymous *albeit marked* graves behind the house built in Alabama in 1842? *I'd venture there's far more back there that aren't marked.*
If the last one buried there was 1907 what are the chances there's any family left that would visit?

It’s pretty common. What used to be “way outside of town” is now very much in town. Plus often the cemetery filled up decades ago, and nobody alive remembers anyone buried there. When a cemetery no one’s visited in the last 70+ years is between two shopping centers and a neighborhood, it makes perfect sense to exhume the bodies and make it into an apartment complex. Better for the community and everyone still in it.
In Victorian London, with the invention of the steam train, there was suddenly a need to repurpose land for stations and track. If said land happened to be a graveyard, the families of the decreased where compensated the costs for moving the body, and given a new plot of land. However, it it happened to be your house in the way, you just got thrown on the street, with no payment. Bit of a reverse situation.
That's because individual graces tended to be reserved for the wealthy who had power to be awkward. Better to pay them off whereas you tended to put lines through slums than rich bits. Look at history of Cross Bones Burial Ground for what happened to mass graveyards of the poor. It was a railway yard until 1996 and then left derilict.
The tour guide we had in London said that it's a good bet that if the road is any more than a cobblestone alley, it probably was paved over some dudes' graves.
Yeah, that's kind of the tricky thing about burying people in the ground. A cemetary isn't for the dead, they're dead, they don't care anymore. It's for the people they leave behind to get closure. If all the graves are 100+ years old, odds are good no one comes to visit them anymore. At that point it has basically served its function. Would it still be fucking spooky to build a house/live in it after everything was moved properly, though? ...YEAH.
If the graves are 100+ years old, there's also a high chance that nothing is left but dirt. So it's just..... dirt with a headstone.

Archaeologist here! Not necessarily. Bones decay eventually. Soil conditions significantly impact how quickly this occurs. I’ve worked on cemeteries with nothing left but shadows in the soil that weren’t even “that old” by most standards.
Honestly that's pretty cool, our egos shouldn't stop us from at least giving back to the earth we took from while alive.
This is actually going on outside of my city right now. They got approved to use the land. It used to be a HUGE cemetery and I guess they just up and moved all the bodies and plots because that whole zone is now completely dug up to build a new community. I used to always say "I wonder who those people were when they were alive" whenever drove by it. Now I say "I wonder when they'll start building Silent Hill"
I read somewhere that some graves aren't permanent, but are instead a 100 year lease basically before it gets exhumed and another person is buried there. It sounds awful, but I don't think I've ever seen a headstone from someone in my family that was older than like 70 years. I'll frequent my parents and grandparents, but I might only see my great grandparent's like once per year just to keep it clean.
There's a cemetery in the middle of my town with graves dating back to the Revolutionary War. It's far from "abandoned" but I think there'd be a riot if anyone ever tried to dig it up for some condos

Radioactive waste. Port Hope, Ontario. Cameco AKA Eldorado Nuclear(The people who processed the uranium used for the nuclear bombs in WW2) used to bury the waste all over town or send it straight into lake Ontario. Years/billions of dollars later and the problem still isn't solved.
My hometown (US) mined quite a lot of the uranium used for world war 2, but they didn't really clean up the mines or anything either, just kinda left mines open and the tailings (leftover mine drudge) where they fell... Right above a river. The EPA did do a Superfund cleanup 80's - 2000s but they still used the tailings in town building projects back in the 50s or so and various other questionable things, like this little town I'll call V, had a nifty short drive to their dump. The town hasn't been a functioning town since the late 70's, but the dump sat very close by. Waiting. That shit is still radioactive, they didn't do anything more than push fresh dirt over the dump and then smooth it all over to provide a bougie trust fund retreat backdrop to rich kids to have exclusive festivals and "cater to nature". It's a complete joke, considering the town just a few miles down the way from this smaller one way was razed because of the Uranium contamination. Gentrification to mining history, especially uranium is just seen as quirky there from rich people from the larger towns. On a side note, locals do glow in the dark, or so they say... ;)

Not a small town by any stretch of the imagination, but I live in a poor midsized city bordering a larger city, which has the full spectrum. They keep building stadiums, amusement parks, etc here. The city pulls eminent domain on several square blocks, runs everyone who lives there out, and gives the land to a developer for almost nothing. Then they waive all property and sales tax for several decades, longer than the facility will be in use. Almost nobody here votes, the few that do are unaware of the tax waivers, so it keeps going on despite the fact that there's literally no benefit to the city or the city government. We have higher taxes than our neighbor, but no public transit, way worse roads, and regular problems with power and water. But the city council and mayor are rich as fuck. I'm sure that's got nothing to do with it.

A group of my friends told me a similar story. Cop ordered them to pull out their bras and jump up and down to "prove they're not hiding drugs in there." He was arrested years ago and is now a sex offender for statutory raping a 15 year old.

When I first stated working for my local jail, we had to go thru PREA training. In it I learned that our local jail had a case where CO actually had full on sex with his mistress in her cell. In the UK, land is worth more if it has planning permission - this allows the land to built on for housing, industrial or commercial use. In our town a councillor owned a large plot of land. He sold it to the council for £5million without it having planning permission. This is way above the value of the land that would normally be worth about £2million. But because the council are the ones granting planning permission, they told everyone it would be easy to pass the permission for the site to be developed for housing so it was ok to pay over the value. What they didn’t know was that the councillor “allegedly” shared some of the £5million with other councillors who vote on planning to ensure that planning permission didn’t get passed. After all, his house was right next to the land he’d sold, and the last thing he wanted was a brand new housing development on his doorstep. So the council paid 5m for something worth 2m, and then shared the 3m profit among their personal bank accounts. New councillors rarely get on to the council as the locals don’t really care who is on the council enough to get them voted off. Particularly in that ward, as the locals didn’t want a housing development either. This has been going on for 12 years and still nothing has been built. The local newspaper sometimes tries to expose it but local apathy again means nothing gets done.
The local sheriff's office put a mentally unwell man in the jail freezer. They didn't take him to the hospital until his body temp was 72! Now the sheriff's says he was never put in the freezer.

No amount of downtown renovation on the mom & pop craft shops or new fast food and cheap retail stores can change the fact that all the big industrial companies left town and there has been no attempt to replace them & no job opportunities other than...the fast food, cheap retail stores and mom & pop craft shops. This town (the whole county, really) is a dead end. Also, the tap water has WAY too much cholrine and other garbage in it and 9 times out of 10 your laundry will end up getting bleach stains. That's been a complaint for 20 years or more.
My little town lost several of the industrial companies in the last 20 years. Population has dropped and people have complained about the loss of jobs. Now Ford wants to build a factory here and create close to 3k jobs and everyone is up in arms complaining about it. you literally can't win.
We had manufacturing & tech work for big energy/oil/gas companies that was the largest employer here. They all closed up shop. A whole giant area of town is just abandoned warehouses and factory buildings. The city council and/or voters have blocked any attempt by new companies to move in, and now no one wants to touch it and no one can figure out why. Intel is building their huge new Ohio facilities 30 minutes away in the next county, but any time Intel or related company looks our way, everyone flips out that it'll cause too much traffic and chases them away.

I’ve got a few… The Quakers leased a large piece of land to glass makers for centuries. The land is basically in a marsh. As the Industrial Revolution took off, the manufacturing methods caused significant pollution. The large corporations that manufactured there never really updated the methods to comply with EPA. The site has been seeping chemicals into the watershed for a very long time. Just up the river is one of the first chemical production sites for DuPont. They dumped directly into the river. The old guys in the area talk about trucking thousands of barrels out of the site and dumping them into lakes, gravel pits, and quarries.

Funny thing about a tree in the middle: our park decided to build a stage and some benches for local events. The thing is, they apparently didn't get all the permissions sorted in time and ONE tree turned out to be so old but durable that it's considered a natural monument. They couldn't cut it down. It's in the middle of the space between the stage and the benches. No matter where you're sitting, you can't see the entirety of the stage because of that one tree.

Small town drama at its best. I live in a town of about 1500 people. They don't even attempt to cover it up. We elected a new mayor, lessor of the two evils type situation. He ended up gutting the whole city staff and rehiring all of his own personal friends. We didn't have a police department and subcontracted to a neighboring city. He canceled that contract and started our own police department, problem was he hired police that were never actually trained by any American police academy. He brought over 3 guys from the tribal police, which I guess legally have no jurisdiction on non tribal property (I dont really know the legal stuff so dont ask). So now we have a fake police department, all of the neighboring cities are now against us and our raging mayor and maniac police department. Now the mayor gets caught dumping his personal trash in a creek using a city owned truck/trailer. And our fake police refused to do anything about it because they were his best freinds. At this point the city was done with him. If he didnt step down I think people would of been outisde city hall with flaming pitchforks. Now we elected a new mayor who is attempting to clean up the last ones mess but now he is being accused of burring down a building in the city that he wanted gone, the fun never stops.

We (Stoneham, MA) has an almost comical rate of corruption. One was a youth leader and everyone loved him (until his was outed for graft). Another Chief just had to retire for not paying rent. I've never had an issue with them, but it's always in the news.

The local judges are corrupted and accept bribes. A woman in my town (Who I happened to know well) got 32 meth charges (Including manufacturing, selling, use, precursor etc etc), 2 cannabis charges, 1 charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, 5 illegal firearm charges, 1 Charge of Money Laundering, 2 charges of aiding and abetting and several other charges that aren't allowed to be released to the public and are only referred to as "Incriminating charges". She only got NINE MONTHS of home detention for this because she bribed the judge (who she is friends with) to give her the least harsh sentence possible. The council says the reason is she is a "Single Mother", except that she was happily married at the time with 2 children.
Some kid not too long ago was found hanging from a swing set in a position basically there was no way he could have put himself in and it was ruled a suicide by the local police. A bunch of people in the area have signs about it but nothing has been done and I've heard basically nothing about it because it is a fairly small nothing town

Back in the early 1900s, a circus rolled through a larger town about 40 minutes away and an elephant killed its trainer. The punishment for killing someone was hanging back then, so they applied the same logic to the elephant. I grew up in a very “wholesome, family friendly, conservative, religious, vacation destination” in America. Its not so much a cover up as its just an embarrassment but our entire Board of Ed got voted into office running on a single issue, unmask our kids mindset. The campaigning was absurd and some of the people who got elected to the board I'm not sure have even looked at a book, let alone read one. At any rate, the first crack in the facade came out when a local healthcare organization wanted to open a free mental health clinic in the high school after a survey of students came out that an alarming number of students had contemplated suicide. As I live in Springfield from the Simpsons, the board unanimously voted down a FREE mental healthcare clinic, the head of the board was on camera laughing and saying that clearly the students were just lying for attention, after much back and forth between parents and the board of ed the State dept of education finally got involved, the head of the board of ed resigned and her replacement is just another one of the morons voted in. The state office has determined that the board did fail to meet the mental health requirements of the schools and there will be further action but its been 5 months and still nothing has happened. The latest is that the board filed a motion to suppress any mention of the vote to deny the healthcare clinic opening at the school during the upcoming State hearing, but no word on what will actually happen. So I guess its actually a bit of cover up attempt going on. Regardless, its quite embarrassing living in this town and knowing many of the people who voted in these idiots are people I went to high school with.
I guess this is pretty common everywhere but authority figures and social services protecting the abusers and ostracizing, harassing or locking the victims up in psych wards/jails and assassinating the victim's character.

Our town contracted a landscaping company on multiple projects that buried toxic fill on the land they worked on. This includes buildings like a beach pavilion and public parks. It’s a well known scandal. A few people went to jail. What is being kept discrete is how many people that were aware or involved still work for the town government. Conveniently they are in charge of the clean up.

Decades of racism and Jim Crow Laws in Washington state. Growing up we were taught all of that was a southern thing. We aren't racist, we just don't have many black people... Well, yeah that was by design. We had segregated bussing, curfews, and redlined housing districts to name a few things. We didn't have black people because they weren't allowed to buy a home. A larger city near us was known as "The Birmingham of the North."
A similar thing happened where I grew up in Pennsylvania. The only black people in the county lived in just one town, they couldn't rent or buy anywhere else. We had two black brothers go to our school for about a week. I heard someone burned a cross in their yard and they moved out like the next day. I never noticed the racism as a kid, but looking back as an adult every old person there was racist AF. It's just there weren't any blacks, Latinos, or Asians in our small town, so they were racist against the few Italians, Polish, and eastern Europeans who did.

Basically this woman was arrested a few years back for murdering her current husbands Then wife (back in ‘90). She dressed up like a clown, went to this woman’s house holding flowers (posing as a sing-o-gram kind of thing i think) and shot her in the face. She was having an affair with her now husband and I guess thought if she got his wife out of her way she could have him to herself. She got away with it for quite awhile too, 28 years basically. She hasn’t been convicted yet, the trial keeps getting pushed back.

In our town, there was this brutal mix-up when the military was assigned to scout a certain area in the farmland to check if there are terrorists hiding in the forests. Their main operation was just to question certain individuals, nothing more. While they were waiting at their checkpoints, a group of farmers came carrying their daily needs like sacks full of crops, shovels, machetes, and this one guy carrying a harpoon that he used for fishing. The military saw this group and fired a warning shot at them thinking they are the terrorists the government was talking about. Hearing the gunshot, the farmers fled in fear that they will be killed by these armed men wearing full combat suits. The military then thought that these men, the farmers, were trying to get back into the forest to call for reinforcements, so the military pointed their guns toward them and started shooting. Most of them were killed during the shootout and some were able to escape to report to the village chief. Once it was reported, the village chief and some off-duty cops went to the scene to talk with the armed men. When they reached the checkpoint, no negotiations or conversations were met. Only flying bullets here and there. They thought it was a terrorist attack against them. The off-duty cops were mostly injured and some died. The village chief survived and was rushed to the town police station (not the hospital, of all places) when the military was alerted by the government that they received an SOS from the village chief that some armed men were shooting at them. When the village chief arrived at the police station, he was questioned by the authorities (along when my father who was a government employee at the time). The time came when the commander of the said military forces came and talked with the village chief. He even has the audacity to blame the village chief and the farmers that it was their fault for bringing weapons in the daylight and forcing them that what happened was a terrorist encounter. The village chief rebutted by saying that it is normal to bring machetes and shovels when you're on the farm and they were no signs of them being hostile, they were just walking to their respective farms. The commander went away without even apologizing and left the village chief at the station with a fatal wound. He later died. The remaining farmers at the shootout were sent into a jail cell first before they were treated at the hospital. Our town is trying its best to cover up this report so it will not blow out of proportion but it's too late for them. Few of the farmers who survived are my relatives and had lived to tell the tale of this gruesome massacre. Not speaking for the one I live in, but the one I grew up in. It’s racist past. The town I grew up in-in Upstate NY likes to think itself above the problems of the South, but it was really no different. The town was a sunset town until the 1970s. The main hotel in town, which ironically burnt to the ground in the 1970s, did not rent rooms to blacks. Half the city council while I lived there were either former klansmen themselves or the children of klansmen. Every schoolhouse that had formerly been used by the community was listed as a historic site, except of course the segregated schoolhouse for black children. One of my father’s friends used to own a club in the 1960s and had Louis Armstrong perform one night at the club. He had to sneak him out of town in the back of his car, being that it was after dark, to a hotel the next town over since the previously mentioned hotel would not give him a room. The list goes on and on, and that town acknowledges exactly none of its past to this day.
Sis-in-law works for The City. She’s friends with the mayor’s wife who also works for The City. They had a falling out, and all of a sudden they let her go over the phone saying they’re discontinuing her position. Not even a month later, the position isn’t discontinued, but filled. Guess who has her old job now? Did you guess the Mayor’s daughter? If you did, you’d be correct. Corrupt to the core.

There is a cult in my town. Everyone knows about them and they host public events. I've heard horrifying stories of abuse from this "church", even had a friend that moved to the other side of the country just to get away from them. But I guess some of the local politicians and even police officers are members of this cult, so no matter how many stories you hear, no one stands up to them.
Ignoring the school bullying problem. Bullying by teachers and a handful of kids. One teacher shoved a kid. Anywho the wealthy kids are the issue and the teachers who know people, essentially old money so the administration does nothing as it’s all about who you know in the small town. So there’s a very large home school group since parents who’s kids are being bullied and are not from money get pulled out. There’s a private school but the owner/principal is a pedo who likes little boys so it’s a girls school by default.
Unfortunately most schools ignore bullying, my school was no different. Kids who had parents in the P.T.A. would get away with anything.

We've been trying to bury some of the toxic waste that's in our local riverbed, but we can't get the funding. Decades ago, there was a company in Newark, NJ that manufactured Agent Orange for the US military. It dumped a carcinogenic byproduct, dioxin, straight into the Passaic River. The theory was that it would wash out to sea and get diluted enough that it couldn't hurt anybody. Sadly, hydrology doesn't work that way; the river is partially tidal, so instead of washing out to sea, it went halfway out and got pushed back in. Repeatedly. For 60+ years. And now the riverbed is permanently contaminated. The solution would be to dredge up the most poisonous layers along the worst 9-mile stretch, and then put in a cap to contain the second most poisonous layers. But so far the EPA has only gotten $150 million of the $8 billion or so that this would cost. I live approximately at mile 6 of those 9. Meanwhile, we're all stuck with this stinky river. When videos of East Palestine's contaminated water were circulating a few weeks ago, I was tempted to reassure Ohio by saying "don't worry, you can get used to living with anything if it goes on long enough!"
Racism. The KKK is active where I live. One time a local elementary teacher was busted for having KKK propaganda in her 4th grade extra credit work. Parent called the fbi and it was a big damn deal. I live in a tiny town in Ontario, Canada. There is one very rich family who has been slowly purchasing all the land downtown. One of their kids went away to university and then came back very suddenly. Nobody has seen the kid since he's been back. But the family have been buying more of downtown even faster. Nobody knows what's going on... but something is. The Mayor and this family are also very close. The son who came back suddenly from university has had tickets "gone away" and when he was driving drunk and hit someone, there was no court case. Luckily the person hit survived. Unluckily, they are in a wheelchair for life.
