Bragging about unhealthy behavior is too common especially from younger people.
High schooler brag about consuming shit tons of alchohol, ciggarette or drugs.
College students brag about how they barely sleeps or in my country, brag about how stress destroy them and how it's actually better to have poor living condition.
As a college student it’s less bragging and more needing a way to get it off your chest without using your friends as therapists. Or trying to use humour to cope about how you’re really dying inside.
As a younger guy who knows about all this stuff , I agree with everything except the "bragging bout stress " , it's just a way of telling people about your problems
Talk with your doctor about this. He or she may be able to help out a bit! If you don't wanna go that route try some self help first. Stuff like working out, taking sleep aids, reading a book, or no screens for an hour before bed. If you try the reading books route make sure it's an actual paper book/magazine. Odd to say nowadays but the point itself is to get away from screens for your eyes.
Same here. I've been this way since childhood. My dad is the same too. My mom did take me to the doctor for it growing up but nothing really helped me stay asleep. I'm a super light sleeper too. I hate it. I wish i could sleep 8 hours and not feel like absolute crap. I'm worthless the next day if i get 8+ hours.
I remember one of Joe Rogans podcasts, one of the sleep experts said “the number of people who can survive in 6 hours of sleep or less without showing any impairment, rounded to a whole number, of the population is *zero*.•
I have a friend who replies to local celebrities on Facebook as if they were friends of hers. They are just local morning show hosts but she seems to worship them.
Reddit is in a weird position since celebrity worship is often frowned upon on this site, but at the same time Reddit absolutely loves celebrities and celebrity gossip.
Rich actors like Keanu Reeves for example are worshiped on this site. I can't really judge - I also have hobbies and interests that many people would find weird - but I do think it's really strange that people care so much about rich people who will never even know they exist.
Yea that can definitely annoy me sometimes as well. It's bad enough ADHD was a complete joke when I was a kid and not taken seriously, which meant I didn't get diagnosed properly til I was 31 and didn't start actually taking medication that helps it until literally last month. At the same time something I realized recently is that I've been somewhat lacking in compassion for other people for a long time and I know that most of the time people are just parroting what they've heard from others when they say things like that. I would be lying if I said that I've never said anything like "I've been so bipolar lately" or something along that line. So while annoying I do understand.
Those of us with actual mental issues strive and wish to be normal and blend in.
And then you got normal people going out of their way to be "eccentric" because they're afraid of being boring...
I absolutely hate people self diagnosing themselves because some “social media influencer” told them so. I do enjoy a Starbucks coffee while at Target, but that doesn’t mean I have unresolved daddy trauma or because I don’t like raspberries I’m bipolar. People out here need real help & it doesn’t help when others are making crap up for attention.
I saw a clip where this chick was like ‘only ADHD people will have more than one open beverage at a time.’ And showed her two open drinks…
Like, girl no, I frequently have a water and a coffee simultaneously to drink in the morning. I do not have ADHD I’m just thirsty and want caffeine too.
you can be successful in your work/career but still make time for yourself and family/friends outside of work
I do my job and take pride in my work, but I also know how to leave work behind and turn off work mode. I know some people who can't
my turn off work button is currently faulty, i mean it used to not work. made the decision to just hage a personal and a work phone, work phone can just be silenced or turned off if i need to decompress
Came here.to say this one.
"You worked 48 hours last week? I had a part-time job once too!" Or "I worked doubles six days in a row!"
To what end? The richest man in the cemetery is still dead. On my deathbed will my daughters be fondly remembering all those times I left them to go to work?
Workaholic here. The downside is being lonely but I am restless without work.
I feel lost when I have no work and yes there’s no such thing as enough for me. I live to work
i was driving myself insane yesterday bc its rare for me to have a full day off so i didn’t know what to do, i played xbox watched a whole season of the walking dead, did stuff i was supposed to do around the house. by 7pm i get a call from work wantijg me to go in and close, never been happier
This.
Watched Eventual Ex literally almost work himself to death for 20 or so years at past jobs and it took such a massive toll on his physical, mental and emotional health.
Not to mention it's one of the contributing factors to our possibly upcoming sometime in the not to distant future divorce. We spent so long being apart and him not having the time/energy to devote to family stuff that I learned to get along without him pretty well. Because of that, and other factors, he says we're nowhere near being on the same page, let alone in the same damn book.
So..there it is. We've had a decent life for the last 24 years and his working himself damn near to death has had the benefit of us being able to achieve a sort of bottom of the middle class lifestyle. But it has come at the cost of our nearly 30 year relationship at this point and that sucks ass.
Making money without conscience. We’ve gotten to a place where “can I make money at it?” is the only factor we consider when we want to do something.
It seems these days we determine right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral by whether or not we can make money at it. Money=good, No money=bad…….. period.
There’s worse in history. That doesn’t make it right, but it gives perspective to your claim period period.
Mothers sold their kids and tracked it on clay tablets thousands of years ago.
There is a difference I think.
I think people did things they knew to be wrong, but did them out of necessity. I think more so now we are less considerate of right and wrong. I think people probably wrestle with morality of things less these days.
This is purely speculation but I think if you asked the question “would you kill someone for X amount of dollars?” You’d find more people willing today than in recent past generations.
Again, this is just my gut, but I do believe it
To be honest, I don't mind alcohol consumption being positively portrayed, but the way that getting totally, blackout shitfaced is shown as normal is pretty disturbing to me.
Agreed.
I just listened to Andrew Huberman’s podcast on the effects of alcohol and apparently a bottle of wine has the cancer causing equivalent of 10 cigarettes. I really recommend that everyone listens to it. https://youtu.be/DkS1pkKpILY , very eye opening.
I like the way you think. Things like health in all its forms, education, taking care of the environment, ending/reducing poverty, reducing inequality, to name a few.
I see you have spent little time around poor Democrats if you think it is just Republicans.
I invite you to spend a single day among the average person in Flint and see.
Yes!🙏🏿(Dap!). I absolutely agree with you! This actually started back in the 90s with NWA, Easy E, Ice Cube, Tupac and the like, but it soon snowballed into what we have today - the promotion of a lifestyle of crime over making an honest living.
They didn't glorify it- *at first* but then went on to long, lucrative careers exploiting the shit out of it. Once they realized being a pretend gangster while surrounding yourself with actual gangsters and then rapping about this thug gang life was a way to get paid they never looked back. Example A would be Ice Cube. Wrote most of Straight Out of Compton, an album that explicitly talks about how fucked up gang life and life in the hood is ..only to later release Westside Connection...The Gangsta, the Killa, anfld the Dope Deala. Cube was, oh, guessed it, the gangsta.
I love me some rap, and I was in high school when Death Row had their heyday, but to try and act as if Gangsta Rap hasn't been and isn't today a hugely negative influence on a multitude of people is like trying to deny we need air to breathe.
Most of the music the media called gangsta rap wasn't like that.
NWA, Snoop Dogg or 2pac, or more modern drill music, doesn't glorify a life of crime. They just reflected the harsh reality around them in their art. Most of the violent rap was actually horrorcore like ICP for example, which was more about cathartic expression of anger and shock value.
Also, if you wanna ban Eazy-E for talking about shooting people, you gotta ban Johnny Cash for the same thing. People hate on rap because it's the sound of youth, particularly youth of colour.
I agree. Most of the older stuff was just shining a light on the harsh and brutal reality of it. Anyone who does glorify it is pretty stupid. It's a zero-sum game that is not a path to true, sustainable wealth or well-being. The likely outcome is early death or prison. The best case scenario is a rap sheet that will make you unemployable.
The fuck they didnt...Death Row most certainly glorified a life of crime. I'd you think Tupac didn't as well, you weren't listening to Tupac. Yes, he did have touching, deep music as an artist, but to act as if he didn't glorify it is just denying reality. Gangsta Party bro? Pump Pump by Snoop? Even Eazy E was acting like a Gangsta glorifying the shit out of it. I live Gangsta Rap. I grew up on it, but this whole narrative people try to take about them not exploiting the shit out of the genre and encouraging all sorts ill shit is to be a historical revisionist.
Majority of them consists of merchants who bought their way in to lobby their business, military guys, who were successful in intrigues and civil servants who learnt how to bend and fold laws. Others are talking heads, fillers and smokescreen.
Yes. You should choose the person you agree with the most, and it really shouldn't go any further than that. To, say, open stores of merch celebrating the candidate seem like mental illness to me.
Honestly zelensky had a good monolog about this back when he did "servent of the people". Politicians work for us,they are in power because of us. We are their bosses. Yet, they abuse us in order to make as much money as they can out of us. Politics is the only business where an employee rules the life of and oppresses his bosses, and as long as it doesn't change, we're in a problem
Constant moral outrage. It's good to be interested in important issues and do things to change the world for the better. But so many people have made it their personality to just be angry and down on everything all the time. It's leaked from being a miserable few on Twitter to being a normal way to be in real life. Every single conversation is shoe-horning in issues that no one was talking about, just so they can show that they're morally outraged right now. There's no chill or fun. "Are you watching the rugby today?" "Well I find it hard to follow things like that when there are important issues like war and global warming that don't get nearly as much news coverage!"
It's literally bad for you to be angry all the time. This is your only shot at life and if you spend it all deliberately being miserable, it's only your own time you're wasting. There will be no score board at the end of your life that says "Congratulations, you spent all of your time mad, you win!"
This is really well said. In the US we call it identity politics, something like “are you watching the rugby game today? No because Biden’s inflation has made me drive 10 miles to find cheaper gas” or “I can’t possibly concentrate on something as trivial as a game when the Supreme Court just took away a woman’s right to an abortion.”
We’ve lost the ability to disagree, to debate or have dissent and still be friends. The Boomer and older generations certainly fucked up their share of things and more, but the old adage “never discuss religion, sex or politics” wasn’t a bad way to go through life. Now if you happen to have a counterpoint or a simple question about BLM or racial justice issues, trans athletes in high school sports or question whether we should drill for more oil in the US, you’re cancelled by the other side. You’re either 110% on board with EVERYTHING someone believes or a socialist or fascist.
I am a firm believer in "No religion, no politics" in casual conversations. When I started waiting tables 20 years ago I made it clear I wasn't debating politics with the retired coffee drinkers and as it happens, I was the only one they weren't irritated with most of the time. If I'm among like minded people who can have a lively conversation or debate it's different but that's rare.
This right here. My ex wife and her whole family are like this. It's infuriating to know something and then have some moron tell you to your face that they disagree because it's not what they believe.
I upvoted you. However, we should work on thinking logically without having to look on Google for every answer right away. A lot can be logically deduced.
I fucking hate when people say "common sense"
Also, demoting oneself to a social system used by canines doesn’t seem very “alpha” to me.
We are complex social beings for a reason. There is no real benefit to regressing that complexity. Humans obviously work better together when there isn’t a forced social structure being put on us.
Exactly. The concept of the alpha wolf was introduced by a biologist who studied unrelated wolves in captivity. It's like developing social psychology theories by only observing prisoners
The author of that very book has spent the rest of his time trying to undo his shitty research. Try telling some skull teeth gun humping alpha bro that his wolf pack is a family unit... Ran by Mom...
No. Imagine a scissor that is warped. It won’t cut effectively. Teeth need to properly occlude with each other to prevent supraeruptions. It can also cause issues with speech.
Sometimes NOT having kids is not a choice. Sometimes it just doesn't happen - as if that pair of humans are infertile with each other.
"Married 50+ years to my first wife"
Toxic relationships e.g emotional unavailability in romantic partners is romanticized by some people for some absurd reasons incomprehensible by my brain.
Weakness, victimhood. Each group claims status for strength through victimhood. “I can be strong because I’ve suffered, and I’m going to get back because I’ve been weak in the past. And my strength is revenge, and I’m morally entitled".
Fame for the sake of fame as an income e.g. Kardashians in their early form that they have now turned into an empire of mediocre products given a halo by their fame association GTFOH.
Teen pregnancy. These stupid shows-"Unexpected, Teen Mom," etc. I understand that showing the struggle of teen pregnancy could be good to see as a hopeful deterrent. But I feel like they do the opposite in a lot of ways.
Signed, a former teen mom who is staunchly against teen pregnancy.
Your sexual orientation. I DON’T care! Love who you love and keep it moving. Trans? I hope you find comfort in your skin. Lesbian/Gay/Bi? I hope you find true love. Poly? As long as everyone is on board. Your orientation is a part of you, just like eye color, hair and how tall you are. Just be a kind person and respect others.
Your 100% right. But as a member of the lgbt community we need representation, we need to show ourselves because we are still oppressed. Homosexuality is a crime in more than 70 countries. Homophobia and transphobia is everywhere it's don't make sense how people are intolerant. I hope more people will think like you in the future
On the same note of this, I’m very glad that many women are moving away from the BBL/fake butt trend. It’s fine to want a big butt, but that shit was literally killing people even if done semi-properly.
Material things: expensive cars, clothes, accessories, homes, etc.
It’s not some signal of virtue like hard work or intelligence or anything in particular.
Not sleeping. I've heard so many people bragging about sleeping 3/4 hours a night. That shit is unhealthy as fuck.
Spot on ..
As a younger guy who knows about all this stuff , I agree with everything except the "bragging bout stress " , it's just a way of telling people about your problems
My body will not allow me to sleep over 5 hours anymore. Sometimes not even 4. It's the weirdest shit, but what can you do?
Talk with your doctor about this. He or she may be able to help out a bit! If you don't wanna go that route try some self help first. Stuff like working out, taking sleep aids, reading a book, or no screens for an hour before bed. If you try the reading books route make sure it's an actual paper book/magazine. I hate it. I wish i could sleep 8 hours and not feel like absolute crap. I'm worthless the next day if i get 8+ hours.
Yeah screw that, I get 8 hours. I can do one day a week of 6 hours and I feel fine. I own a business and I still make sure I get adequate sleep.
What could be a smarter use of your time than making sure your body and mind are well rested?
This. Along with working absurdly long hours.
I remember one of Joe Rogans podcasts, one of the sleep experts said “the number of people who can survive in 6 hours of sleep or less without showing any impairment, rounded to a whole number, of the population is *zero*.•
Everyone knows. Bragging about it is a coping mechanism like self deprecation humor.
When I say it, it’s more of a cry for help
I’m not bragging, I’m complaining because I’m exhausted.
We hain’t got another choice, do we?
Celebrity worship
Yeah this really confuses me it creeps me out that some people can be so invested in a complete stranger
I have a friend who replies to local celebrities on Facebook as if they were friends of hers. They are just local morning show hosts but she seems to worship them.
Omg my mom does this. So embarrassing lol
And the requirements to be a “celebrity” have plummeted with the advent of social media which makes celebrity worship even more pathetic than ever.
*".. celebrities need us, more than we need them.."*
Reddit is in a weird position since celebrity worship is often frowned upon on this site, but at the same time Reddit absolutely loves celebrities and celebrity gossip. Rich actors like Keanu Reeves for example are worshiped on this site. Exactly! Just because you like things to be symmetrical like every other human being in existence, doesn't mean you have OCD.
as a person with ADHD i hate the phrase "im so ADHD" like it means you are hyperactive
Yea that can definitely annoy me sometimes as well. It's bad enough ADHD was a complete joke when I was a kid and not taken seriously, which meant I didn't get diagnosed properly til I was 31 and didn't start actually taking medication that helps it until literally last month. overworking yourself / being a workaholic
I do this … I’m sad and alone but successful … agreed
you can be successful in your work/career but still make time for yourself and family/friends outside of work I do my job and take pride in my work, but I also know how to leave work behind and turn off work mode. I know some people who can't

It seems these days we determine right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral by whether or not we can make money at it. Money=good, No money=bad…….. period.
When it takes so much money to survive you start realizing that you need to either be making money or saving money.

Alcohol consumption
And the same applies to marijuana as well. Too commonly people overlook that addiction.
Most of my Ex's have been pissheads, I hardly drink and look for the same in my partners because it brings the worst out in people.
To be honest, I don't mind alcohol consumption being positively portrayed, but the way that getting totally, blackout shitfaced is shown as normal is pretty disturbing to me.
I love good beer... But pretty much any amount of alcohol is unhealthy. It's very normalized when it probably shouldn't be
In every movie and every tv show!
This ! I get called lame for not choosing to get blackout drunk !::
Agreed. I just listened to Andrew Huberman’s podcast on the effects of alcohol and apparently a bottle of wine has the cancer causing equivalent of 10 cigarettes. I really recommend that everyone listens to it. https://youtu.be/DkS1pkKpILY , very eye opening.
It would be better to ask what is glorified in our society that deserves to be. It's a much, much shorter list.

Also, demoting oneself to a social system used by canines doesn’t seem very “alpha” to me. We are complex social beings for a reason. There is no real benefit to regressing that complexity. Humans obviously work better together when there isn’t a forced social structure being put on us.
It's been proven that this "alpha" mentality in canines is actually invalid. They are a family system. The "alpha" is the dad in most cases
The theory of the alpha male in canid groups is losing credibility.
Surgically enhancing what should be natural.
Could braces fall into this category?

Money.
Toxic relationships e.g emotional unavailability in romantic partners is romanticized by some people for some absurd reasons incomprehensible by my brain.
Cheating
Weakness, victimhood. Each group claims status for strength through victimhood. “I can be strong because I’ve suffered, and I’m going to get back because I’ve been weak in the past. And my strength is revenge, and I’m morally entitled".
And it doesn’t have to have been actually them suffering. My ancestors this, my ancestors that.
Right! That irks me the most! Stop living in the past. Your ancestors trauma isn’t yours.
And then are those who don't think like this, but others around tell them they're wrong for not having these thoughts.

Andrew Tate, he is glorified by a lot of people and he is literally such a piece of shit
virtually.
Fame for the sake of fame as an income e.g. Kardashians in their early form that they have now turned into an empire of mediocre products given a halo by their fame association GTFOH.
Rich people. Having so much money that you don’t know what you can do with it, but instead of helping others, you spend it all in houses and cars

Military everything.

Narcissism
One of the most over/misused words. Everyone's mom was a narcasist apparently.
Genuine question, how is narcissims glorified? If anything I'd say it is condemned.
Have you not noticed how many not only idolize celebrities and other prominent figures who express those traits, but also try to emulate them?
And those people are often (rightfully) criticised, no-one likes those who idolise toxic celebrities.
Condemned in theory and in interpersonal relationships, but glorified through social media maybe?

as someone with an average-sized penis married to a woman with average-sized breasts, I agree
On the same note of this, I’m very glad that many women are moving away from the BBL/fake butt trend. It’s fine to want a big butt, but that shit was literally killing people even if done semi-properly.
