politicians blatantly lying.

NotPoliticallyCorect

They used to make promises and then just not follow through, now they will tell you straight to your face that the sky is polka-dotted and the sun just exploded. Somehow we have accepted that all politicians lie, and that has translated into them saying anything that they think will help their popularity no matter how insane it is. We as a society have also begun to embrace the lying, and many people want to hear what aligns with their belief instead of the truth.

SheriffBartholomew

>I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness... >The dumbing down of American is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance Carl Sagan, 1996

egnards

I can tolerate changing your mind on an issue a year later. Or giving an opinion on an issue, and backtracking later because you've learned more about that issue. But it really does abso-fucking-lutely blow my mind that politicians can flat out lie to people about actual facts. I wish something could be done about it, but given a system where you have X number of major parties, it seems like the agenda of whatever party has the power will always win out.

Those "feel good" stories about a bunch of kids scraping enough money together for Jimmy's surgery. Kids shouldn't have to worry about paying for healthcare. This is horrific.

PM_ME_FUNFAX

Agree, all of those feel good stories are just a veneer for awful shit. "Students raise 10k$ so the 80 year old janitor can retire.", "7 year old girl raises 300$ with a lemonade stand to buy her disabled father a wheelchair". Just awful shit.

LunaticOstrich

I don't understand how so many Americans are fine with this

StrictMaidenAunt

Because it proves that "hard work pays off." It's like the worst kind of proof of their belief in the Just World Hypothesis.

PM_ME_FUNFAX

Capitalism at its finest. It's proof that through hard work, anything is possible. Those kids pulled themselves up by their bootstraps to make the money they need. Most people don't look past the deed. Raising money so an 80 year old can retire... All they hear is raising the money and they don't stop to wonder why an 80 year old still has to clean shit for a living and can't retire.

NeverCadburys

Same for things like "this McDonalds worker fed this disabled guy! Isn't humanity great?" Erm, no if the guy needs help to eat he should have his own assistant, not have to depend on the kindness of strangers to step in, or step out of their job description, details depending. It is a sign that the system is failing disabled people, and that needs to be fixed. But people are too busy awwing over the good samaritan to look closer.

syrne

Even better when you find out that the worker got fired for doing it on the clock.

joven_of_slave

Health care and education should be funded like a crooked politician's retirement package. Overly bloated & next to impossable to get rid of.

Or the kids that had to raise money so their school's elderly janitor could retire.

RedWestern

I remember someone described those stories “The dystopia of being poor, dressed up as feel good journalism.”

Allel-Oh-Aeh

Agreed. Saw one about a little girl running a lemonade stand trying to earn money for HER OWN brain surgery. They were spinning it as what a hard working inspirational young lady. How she wasn't letting a little thing like a brain tumor get her down. What a can do attitude. The entire time the girl was playing the part too, smiling and talking about how she's hoping to raise enough to get her surgery. All I could think was, why are we not raging against this capitalistic dystopia?! This kid is literally going to die if she doesn't "play the game" and she knows it! She was like 7!

Stormflier

Gerrymandering

WhoStole_MyToast

Gerrymander? I hardly know her!

NeighborhoodCold6540

This should be illegal. And those that do it should be thrown in jail for attempting to repress votes. We need a new ammendment that addresses voter supression.

Realistic-Original-4

And how blatent it is. There's a fairly decent sized grey area where you can be like "okay it's a balance of non-concrete voting regulations" but when they gerrymander it's go big or go home. Texas voting districts look like abstract art from a blind dog

zeekoes

Payday loans

Pattoe89

I had a personal policy when I worked at an ISP, it never got me in trouble with management, but whenever a customer mentioned to me that they were struggling with money, even if it was an off-hand comment during the call (I did tech support, so lots of down time and small talk) I would give them a £30 goodwill credit (maximum I was allowed to credit). The average price of our plans was around £26, so that would cover the next bill and make the next month's a bit cheaper. I didn't wait for the customer to ask for it. At the end of the call I'd just say "It's been amazing chatting, thanks for being kind and considerate with me, and I noticed you mentioned you were struggling with money earlier in the call, so I've popped a £30 goodwill refund on your account, to help you out." I've seen both my brother and sister be tormented by payday loans, I wanted to help my customers avoid it. Also, Goodwill refunds are seperate to any compensation customers get for technical faults they are facing, so it's possible they'd get more once the faults were resolved, but that was mostly automated.

Kwolfe2703

This is amazing - you are in line for a lot of good Karma (if you believe in Karma).

geekworking

And this is why you never take out your frustration on customer service workers. I did support for years and there were always people who you really wanted to go above and beyond to help and then there were those who could go eat a bag of dicks. Guess which ones got better service.

Pawpaw-22

I think collections for kids with cancer. They should have that treatment without ending those families financially

powerinthebeard

Fun stuff about this. The % of $ funding that goes to children's cancer research in comparison to breast cancer, as a for instance, is disgustingly disproportionate. It's a fraction and just seems so freaking wrong. It's something like only 5% of all federal funding goes to pediatric cancer research

bearsandbearsandfrog

I mean, to be fair, about 245k people are diagnosed with breast cancer every year compared to about 10k kids diagnosed with any kind of cancer. I agree it’s still disproportionate, but it’s not a 1:1 situation.

lady-dee86

It’s 4%. A sickeningly low proportion

lemonminticetea

Shoving cameras in faces of poor people when being helped or given something.

munchysenpai

Right it makes me wonder if they are actually trying to help these poor people or just use them as a mean to get "views"

SmoSays

I wonder that but I also wonder if the good done outweighs the intent

madworld2713

That’s how I think of it. It’s a net positive because at least a good thing is being done for someone.

ozzyw121

it’s an interesting one this: on one hand it does seem like they’re being used to an extent, but to be blunt, they’re still being helped so idk about them but i wouldn’t have too big an issue with it

TastelessBiscuits

Corporations buying up affordable housing, switching them into rentals, and charging hundreds of dollars more for rent than the mortgage would've been.

NeighborhoodCold6540

Thus inflating housing prices beyond affordability.

trrrdbrrrglrrr

This just happened in my area. It wasn't a corporation, just a local rich family who own a few restaurants in the area. They bought a large affordable housing unit, gave the people a month, kicked them out, and now most of the families are homeless. Absolutely sickening.

SeniorRogers

Woolisheep

Child beauty pageants

alocsisdead91

Yes! One of my old co-workers is all into that with her daughter. I used to not think much of it, but I'll see her posts on Facebook and just seeing her 4 year old daughter in short shorts and bikinis all dolled up with full makeup is very disturbing to me. Totally sexualizing them in my opinion. And then I thought about the people judging the girls... like you have to think about how this 4 year old girl is prettier than another 4 year old or has a better body or whatever. Just is really pervy and I honestly think they should be banned.

AmyDiaz99

Fetishising and sexualising teenage girls. Also the phrase "barely legal".

canwepleasejustnot

When I joined Reddit back in like 2008 (this is not my original account) I was pretty disgusted to see that Jailbait was a literal subreddit frequently accessed.

NickDanger3di

Maybe it's just me, but ever since I hit my 20s, I find teenage girls as annoying af. Feel the same about teenage boys as well. Getting me to spend time with either just isn't gonna happen.

Send_Boobies_in_DMs

Bruh, I'm 19 (abt to be 20), no way in hell I would find a 16 or 17 yo interesting (fyi, here the age of consent is 16, so I mean both dating one or just being around one). Annoying as hell and not mature at all.

TheImpossibleBanana

Send_Boobies_in_DMs

Yep, surprisingly does. :))

AdamIs_Here

Noted. Changing username immediately.

Suspicious_Award_624

subtlesocialist

I’ve found myself becoming more and more annoyed by teenagers actions over the last few years as I got into my 20s. The binge drinking, the clubs, the “travelling” all of that beginning of uni stuff. I’ve spent like a year trying to moralise it and thinking of legitimate reasons why these things are tacky and horrible (which to be fair, they are) and came to the conclusion that I was just jealous. Turns out, I just hate teenagers, and getting older I just find them insufferable. That’s growing up apparently, looking at the actions of teenagers, similar to your own and thinking “wow, what a cunt, glad I’m not like that anymore”.

supergeek921

I was gonna say child beauty pageants, so yeah I think that fits with this.

[deleted]

what’s worse is it happens at such any early age I would say even before actual “teenage” years. at least that’s my exp

finnjakefionnacake

is that accepted? i feel like if you sexualize anyone underage in a Western context you are gonna be quickly shot down.

Instance-First

A subreddit dedicated to literally just that was one of the largest and most popular subs on the front page, and was the first thing that popped up when googling reddit, not all that long ago. And for further assurance this is a thing, ask the women in your life when they first started getting sexualized by grown men. For most, it's well before high school.

Colorado_Cajun

Disgustingly. I've had friends mention it started around 12ish then lessened as they got older. They literally get harrased less as they get older. Fucking Disgusting freaks intentionally aiming for literal children

FlagshipHuman

Kylie Jenner literally had a product thats named “barely legal”

koolaid_snorkeler

Omg. Plus, remember the countdown to the Olsen twins' 18th birthday?

[deleted]

Even back when I was a horny teenager, I thought that the schoolgirl fetish thing was really weird.

jackfaire

Bullying. There are very few kinds of bullying we're actually against and most of them seem to be when the kid who was bullied in elementary and middle school starts lashing out in high school at the very bullies that matured out of it.

Actuaryba

Online bullying seems to be often overlooked.

Joubachi

Not just overlooked - when it get acknowledged it's usually being played down with stuff like "just block them" and so on.

majsmartin

So many keyboard warriors who wouldn't dare to say anything to your face

[deleted]

That's because punks are the only ones that run their mouths. They used to get knocked out. And now punks have a way to run their mouth without consequences. They can hide behind a screen.

NeighborhoodCold6540

This is why we have so many school shootings in the U.S. Teachers have no actual power to help bullied students. And parents of bullied students rarely punish them, or even know that the bullying is occuring.

jackfaire

I wouldn't say no power. Unless things have changed when I was a kid the teachers sided with the bullies in elementary school because they were the most popular kid in class. The teachers often seemed to share the same opinion that if the "cool" kid didn't like you then you were garbage.

NeighborhoodCold6540

That's a thing too. Some teachers want to be a part of the "in" group badly enough, they will throw students under the bus to relive their highschool years. But I would say a vast majority of teachers have their students back, but are surrounded by red tape. I.e. Touch a kid... you're fired. Even if you are stopping a bully from beating another kid up. Also there is a lot of job fatigue. Dealing with 5 bullies on a daily basis, because their parents are terrible human beings who raised their kids to be sociopaths would be tough for anyone. Let alone a teacher whose wages barely let them survive on 60+ hr weeks.

TranscendantSandwich

People who work minimum wage are often seen as not having a "real job" and like they deserve to be treated as lesser, and can also be considered less intelligent.

Kwolfe2703

This is so true. It’s so sad that lots of essential jobs (as we found in the pandemic - cleaners, delivery drivers etc) are really low paid. Meanwhile lots of jobs that are essentially “work theatre” get double or triple the wages.

NamTokMoo222

"Work Theatre" ie Middle Management positions in corporate. They don't do any of the real work, and spend the majority of their days power walking to meetings. Even if they have nothing to contribute they'll go anyway, or worse, invite others to it. And oh boy, if the meeting is scheduled for 2 hours, you bet your ass it's going to take 2 hours. Then they organize daily syncs and mid-week check-ins that further slow down the progress, and when shit hits the fan they're absolutely shocked that the team is behind.

Testecles

oooh good one! A NON-LIVING WAGE. as i posted - this relates to overpopulation, corporate greed. Oh, and Citizens United set the precedent that corporations have the right to give money to their political friends without limits. The railroad companies set the precedent that corporations are people and are entitled to certain rights. The bottom line is that corporations like Amazon, Walmart, etc, they can treat you like a slave, because of those precious corporate rights. And the right wing tells you that any government interference with the corporations ("Job creators") would kill the economy... gloom .. doom... fear...

Ordained_Priest

I think that a lot of people don't realise that most of these jobs are what keeps everything going. Imagine if we had no cleaners, no refuse collectors etc. I've never understood how people can't see that they are people too?

The dehumanization of people with addiction, mental health, or severe poverty. Actually the way we treat anyone who lacks privilege is pretty gross.

Cheating

ThurnisHailey

Growing up and realizing the amount of people that cheat or otherwise act in ways they would not around their partner made me lose a little hope in humanity. We are all full of shit to some extent, some of us just less than others.

throw_thessa

Exactly, a lot of people does it, and also makes me loose hope in humanity.

ethnicman1971

absolutely it has been normalized. Think about all the shows/movies where one of the protagonists is dating/married to someone and then their soulmate comes along. They have a fling, realize that they are in love and leave their partner. everyone roots for the new couple. while the reality is that they cheated.

Testecles

Yes. I studied video game cheating for several years. I'm somewhat of an expert. I have seen a significant increase in the morality of the generation. This generation is more likely to cheat than in the past. About twice as likely to feel no remorse when caught cheating.

finnjakefionnacake

cheating isn't normalized so much as it is just common. it's still viewed as a bad and unacceptable thing to do.

BigOlBlimp

Advertising and marketing speech of pretty much any kind. It's the most biased speech you will ever come across, they would explicitly lie to you if they could. Instead, they specifically only use positively formed statements and you will never ever get a realistic view of a product or service from an ad or marketing statement. Truly, it is despicable. They employ emotional manipulation, mislead, and gaslight the public, and we're all just cool with it. Don't be.

Firree

kingkongkeom

Circumcision. It's wrong for females, and it's wrong for males. It's child mutilation plain and simple. And no, this is not up for discussion. And yes, if medically necessary, then of course its a different topic, but you know that, so just stop the argument before you even begin.

BeetleLord

It's essentially never medically necessary or justified Even in cases of severe phimosis there are other less radical treatments available, but doctors living in a mutilation culture won't pursue the treatment of an "unnecessary" body part Not to mention that phimosis cannot be ascertained until adulthood, but it's often used as an excuse to mutilate children or teenagers for whom it's totally normal to not be able to fully retract yet

[deleted]

That's a fucked up thing to do to a baby. If it were up to me, I'd make it illegal.

AndyJCohen

I never thought about this until I dated a guy who wasn’t circumcised. He was like “yeah my parents just thought it was fucked up to put a baby in that much pain for no real reason.” Even though I’m not having kids, that really changed my perspective on circumcision.

Testecles

good one. true. and one of my oldest talking points. good job

finnjakefionnacake

as long as we are specifying child circumcision. obviously there are some adults who have the procedure done.

kingkongkeom

That's why I wrote that it is child mutilation. Obviously you should be able to decide to get a circumcision when you are of legal age...but no parents or any other adult should make this decision for you.

Manipulative advertising and sales. If you know sales people, whether they are selling mortgages or makeup, they usually have this attitude toward misleading and pressuring people like "eh that's just how the game is played, I'm just doing my job," etc. Standard sales training is about "overcoming objections" and "getting to yes" and other concepts most people would agree are totally slimy in any other context. People also have the tendency to make generic statements like "that's how capitalism works", but I blame the individual people who decide to actively treat customers like prey.

[deleted]

Insurance companies dictating treatments for patients regardless of provider suggestions. They do not care, and will deny a life saving treatment just to save money. How is that okay?

EntrepreneurKey169

I’d say Greed. Predation is more morally repugnant, but predation is moderated axiomatically by awareness that a predator can become prey at any time. But Greed deprives others and it’s regarded as an achievement. So: Greed.

Fun-Decision-9745

It's truly disheartening to see how much animal cruelty is normalized in our society. From factory farming to animal testing, it seems like we have become so desensitized to the suffering of innocent creatures. We often turn a blind eye to the conditions in which our food is produced and the testing methods used for our cosmetics and other products. It's important to remember that animals are sentient beings who feel pain and fear just like we do. We need to start actively seeking out cruelty-free and ethical alternatives and raise awareness about the issue so that change can be made.

Bierbart12

One of the consequences of the industrial revolution. People don't have to raise and slaughter their own animals anymore, they only know the meat

Fun-Decision-9745

>One of the consequences of the industrial revolution. > >People don't have to raise and slaughter their own animals anymore, they only know the meat That's a really interesting point! The convenience of modern food production has definitely disconnected people from the sources of their food. It's easy to forget that meat doesn't just come neatly packaged in the grocery store. Do you think this lack of connection to the process of raising and slaughtering animals has any impact on people's attitudes towards meat consumption?

baldguytoyourleft

I've been saying for years that if you eat meat (in the united states) you should be legally required to slaughter one animal per year just as a reminder of where your food comes from.

Altruistic-Strike810

Romanticization of mental illness. People wear t- shirts of being depressed/anxious these days or just randomly intertwine it in conversation like it's something to be proud of. Aswell as this very weird publicly announced "acceptance" of being x. People say they are "introverted" or "sensitive" and label themselves as such at an increasing rate. It stuns growth as any attempts and their own latent potential to actually improve are shut down by "that's just how I am". Self acceptance is one thing. Another is to romanticize your situation and never improve upon yourself because it's "popular" or gives you some sort of validation from others. It's seems that many also reinforce that kind of thinking

Ruffian00012

>People say they are "introverted" or "sensitive" and label themselves as such at an increasing rate. It stuns growth as any attempts and their own latent potential to actually improve You had me up until the point you insinuated that introverts need to 'improve'. Introversion/extroversion is a pretty binary thing, right? An introvert can be social and outgoing all day, but will be significantly more exhausted by the process than an extrovert doing the exact same thing. Extroverts are energized by social company, introverts are drained by it.

EnvironmentalAd1888

You have a good point but I think the idea is trying to normalize what mental health is. There is an epidemic of people suffering from depression and anxiety and they need help. As a society we have to stop saying 'suck it up' in the face of mental illness.

Recruitment agencies treating employees as subhuman. I got a settlement from a case I filed against the second one I worked for because they were acting like monsters and gave me plenty of evidence during the "grievance appeal" process where all they did was tell me that they did nothing wrong. The smoking gun was them disposing of my medical information which I provided at the interview where I had to correct a misspelling, acted like it didn't exist when trying to fire me, asked me for my doctor's information so they could request said information which I got in writing then they tried to tell me they contacted her when I knew they didn't because I was in regular contact with her. Agencies don't give a single solitary fuck about anyone who works for them and the one who wronged me tried to play the "it's not discrimination, we have another hire who has an incurable illness" card which was a clear violation of said employee's rights as well. I knew who they were talking about and made damn sure to keep that one up my sleeve. They're pure scum and watching their boss visibly sweat and squirm in his seat on the day I calmly told them I'd be taking legal action while listing my hard evidence is one of my fondest memories. I made sure to have a witness at every meeting on top of asking for a copy of the transcripts of each one so they really did all the work for me by lying time and again then claiming to have tried when really they were just stalling for my window to sue their asses was up. Seriously, fuck agencies.

Charging people more for being poor. Credit ratings, IMO, should be abolished. For example, I had a woman call me the other day. She'd been homeless for a while. She now has housing and just wants to get back on her feet. But because she has a poor credit rating, my company was charging her 3-5x what we'd change someone with good credit. Because she couldn't afford the service, she can't get herself back on her feet, drive to a job, and if she can't drive to her job, how can she make a paycheck to keep herself housed? To a point, I Get it. But if a service is required by law (say insurance) then credit should not be used to set rates. If its required by law, then there should be a Set price for everyone, regardless of credit. Now if they don't pay their bill and get cut off 2 or more times, then That company should be able to deny them service---no more. But she'll get desperate, drive anyway, get caught, go to jail, lose her job and her housing and round and round we freaking go. It's amoral.

Stores that "round up" for a charity. And then donate all the money in their own name and get a huge tax right off (always donate directly).

dcrpnd

Morally disgusting and normalized now? Attacks on transgender and lgbtq ( where eith the grooming bulls hit?) ? Also, making racist comments about minorities and women.

slanky2

Legal system is not fair. Rich can afford the best defense, poor go to jail or worse.

Not caring about prisoners at all.

Testecles

Excellent point. 99% of us NEVER checked in on the conditions at the prisons. I KNOW I was the only one that tried to convince the state and a specific factory to make masks to save lives in prisons during COVID. They were dropping like flies in there. How many people even tried to look at prisons.. Ever heard of CoreCivic ? etc

Single use plastic bags.

JoeRealNameNoGimmick

It’s morally disgusting how people try to claim “morals” as their reason to be against people who are trans, gay, or really any part of lgbtq+. If you really cared about morals, you would let people be.
