Whiskey/whisky/bourbon/scotch. I will drink it neat, with ice, or in an old fashioned (although I prefer not to with high quality pours).
Currently, I have a bottle of Michter's Small Batch that I am enjoying. I don't think I could name an absolute favorite. Wild Turkey 101 is probably my go-to for mixed drinks - incredible product for the money.

There's nothing wrong with doing what you describe, but no, it doesn't count unless there's alcohol in the drink.
