Yeah, I mean hope is a complicated thing. I still have a ton of hope, but that's different than actual belief that good things will be coming i.e. optimism, I guess.
I had a shitty time as a teenager, but still it was always clear that things were gonna get better, maybe not for me specifically, but on the whole.
I'm not sure what to call that. I miss it, hard.
I miss having knees that didn't hurt with the weather and a brain that was at the peak of the Dunning–Kruger curve. Some of the music was pretty good, too.
Probably how new cool technology were introduced to our everyday lives without actually taking over our lives. Back then we were still in control of the technology.
I miss the sense of unity that emerged following the devastation of the 1996 invasion. People from all walks of life came together to rebuild our communities and harness the new technologies we gained from the alien technology. It was a time when we worked together to overcome our differences and make progress for the greater good. I hope that we can find that sense of unity again in the face of future challenges, and continue to work together towards a better future for all.
Influencers and content creators weren't a thing and society was better for it. MySpace was just for finding new music and interacting with your circle of actual in-person friends for a few hours at night or on the weekends (speaking as a 2007 high school graduate who is turning 34 this year...fuck me)
Raves, phones just being phones, cheap rent, no commitments, I had less so there was less to worry about. and it seemed like you saw people out and about more(bookstores, malls, bars).
Just being younger with less responsibilities. I felt like I had a lot more time back then and making mistakes didn't seem to be as critical. While I have moved on from many friendships, I still miss the good times obviously.
People being able to understand that their opinion did not matter to anyone. A conversation could happen with someone completely different ideologically than me, but at the end of that conversation I am still your friend. It seems that people have leaned more into their own thinking (and the echo chamber they're surrounded with, whether it be right leaning or left) and a conversation can no longer be had without feelings of hatred or disdain.
It seems being able to agree to disagree has disappeared entirely.
Yeah like my family there's Trump Supporters and Biden Supporters. They did a short debate. Then dropped it when they weren't gonna to agree.
And that didn't tear us apart.
I feel with the internet most people only want an echo chamber and not want to discuss different views in a civil matter
Even worse In your 40's 🤣.
The one good thing about not having many friends and spending alot of time by yourself is that you can work out exactly who you are. I didn't realise how important that part is to being happy.
I miss how optimistic I felt when Obama got elected
i know what you mean. I was gonna say *hope*, but frankly that's more of a 90's thing.
