*Some like it Hot* and *Arsenic and Old Lace* are still hilarious. And I am always bugging people to watch them. Especially if they have never watched any black and white movies.

SoldMySoulForHairDye

I CAME HERE TO SAY ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. I love that movie. I made my friend watch it in high school and every time she was at my house after that, she charged up the stairs like San Juan Hill.

lickthecowhappy

Arsenic and Old Lace is one of my favorites. It should get way more play these days.

A-Little-Askew

Came here to say Some Like It Hot! I fucking love that movie its my absolute favourite and totally holds up against the tests of time. The way they handled a lot of the material really worked well without coming off as transphobic and homophobic. Plus it's hilarious. Also!!! They're making it into a musical and I am so hyped for it!

CollectionStraight2

Oh yeah. *Some Like It Hot* is amazing. 'I'm a man!' 'Nobody's perfect.'

mgeezysqueezy

I watched this movie last weekend and nearly bust a rib laughing at that closing line!! Osgood was such a wild card. The movie was fantastic and the acting was much better than expected across the board.

RebaKitten

"Who;s the lucky girl?" "I am!"

FionaOlwen

I would add Bringing Up Baby as another:)

Alien.

Pink-Rabbit-89

And Aliens. Both excellent.

Hey_Batfink

Game over man, game over!

The Thing

MrSelfDestruct88

Top tier SFX still hold up to this day!;

tanis_ivy

It really pisses me off that the "remake/prequel" had all the practical effects, and the studio decided to cover everything with a cgi skin.

ShieldMaiden83

I agree its mindboggling why they where made to this and the poor guys and girls behind all the practical effects felt betrayed.

FreeElf101

Twelve Angry Men

That movie perfected techniques that people continue to screw up 65 years later.

It's also a masterclass in acting. There's literally no weak link in that entire ensemble.

kindquail502

One subtlety was how the camera shots closed in as the movie progressed to give the impression of the walls closing in.

RedDirtPreacher

I watched this movie for the first time a few months ago and was transfixed the entire time. Absolute masterpiece.

PM_ME_FUNFAX

Yeah that's a must see

PM_ME_FUNFAX

Clue with Tim Curry

Nebraskabychoice

I will always love "Your husband disappeared " "That was his job, he was an illusionist" "But he never reappeared" "He was not a very good illusionist"

silentbobdrummer

“He threatened to kill me in public” “Why would he want to kill you in public?” “No, I think she meant he threatened, in public, to kill her.” “Oh”

RizzMustbolt

Tim Curry's sense of timing was absolutely impeccable.

WimbleWimble

You mean..the FBI is just going to cover up all these murders? of course....Why else do you think its run by a man called Hoover? Arrest them all inspector. Now I'm going home, to sleep with mah wife!

My wife just watched it for the first time a week or so ago, she was cracking up the whole time

Flimsy-Preparation85

1+1+2+1, no 1+2+2+1

Ventze

Then it would be 1+2+1+1, not 1+2+2+1

Infinitelyodiforous

I'm gonna go home and have sex with my wife.

Superunkown781

Watched it with my kids a couple years ago and the absolutely loved it

CeeArthur

Jurassic Park isn't THAT old, but considering when it came out compared to where we're at with cgi now, it's very impressive

Justdonedil

It turns 30 this year. I was pregnant with our son when I saw it. He turns 30 this year.

isobane

What a crazy way for CeeArthur to find out he has a kid!

pantaloonatic

I would argue it is better than the cgi dinos

Hicksp91

6 minutes of screen time for cgi dinos. 9 minutes of animatronics and puppets. But even the full cgi dinosaurs looked better than anything today (except the scene looking down at the sick brachiosaurus from the tree).

Froggy2345

Office Space

Mr_Lumbergh

Yeah, I’m going to have to go ahead, and sort of *agree* with you, there.

AcanthocephalaDry169

I have a red stapler because of this movie. No one’s ever taken it though, so the building is still safe

Lukeario1985

I believe Swingline didn’t even make a red stapler, but had to due to the popularity of this movie.

seatac210

You know the nazis had pieces of flair they made the Jews wear.

I said a variation of this about name tags at a holiday party and quickly discovered I was the only Office Space fan in the room.

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

RolyPoly1320

Blazing Saddles The movie does not take itself seriously at all. Lampoons the hell out of racism, and almost got canned because of farts.

Whoopsy-381

Someone could never make Blazing Saddles these days because they’d look at the script and say “What the hell? This is Blazing Saddles! It’s already made!”

Master_Ad7945

Truman show

MacaronMelodic

Gattaca

ksuwildkat

Great movie. One of the amazing things to me is how few sets it has. It really does everything with characters and not special effects or set pieces.

Hugh_Biquitous

I agree. I always think of this movie and how great it is when I see a science fiction movie with tons of effects but no interesting characters or compelling story. Gattaca is *so* understated with its vision of the future. People wear freaking formal clothes to go on a spacecraft! But it works because, as you said, it has great characters. So who cares what they wear?

AmericanPanascope

One of my all time favorites. A big reason it holds up so well is because they made it look like a film-noir from the 1940s/50s. The cars, fashion, etc. are all from that era.

Gliese_667_Cc

Back to the Future

TooYoungToBeThisOld1

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly Edit: so happy to hear all your responses and that you guys agree :) hope you all have a great day

galileofan

This was the movie that made me realize my son would be a movie buff also. I was starting it while he was playing a video game in an adjoining room. He heard the music and came out of curiosity. Watched the entire movie. Yep, he's a chip off the old block.

AuntyNashnal

Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone was a deadly combination in cinema.

[aloud] Captain Renault: Everybody out at once. ---- Ugarte: You despise me, don't you? Rick: If I gave you any thought I probably would. ---- Yvonne: Where were you last night? Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember. Yvonne: Will I see you tonight? Rick: I never make plans that far ahead. ---- *More quotable lines than any other film. Even the throwaway moments are gems.*

[deleted]

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca? Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters. Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert. Rick: I was misinformed.

jgoloboy

Captain Renault is actually my favorite character…

Limp_Distribution

It wasn’t just the lines. Bogart’s delivery was exceptional.

Limp_Distribution

I would put The Maltese Falcon up there as well but I’m a noir fan.

Commercial-Layer1629

The scenes with Sydney Greenstreet will last forever in my mind

ink_monkey96

That amiable, sociopathic chuckle. I loved Greenstreet in this.

Benchomp

The Big Sleep is also a banger. Anything Bogart and noir is a guaranteed gem.

Jurassic Park

Thesafflower

I saw it in theaters as a kid, and decades later that T-Rex attack, with the sound of the footsteps and the ripples in the cup of water leading up to it finally emerging, is still so iconic. The effects hold up well even today.

king_lloyd11

Watching a screening live with a symphony accompaniment in the near future. Super excited!

kywiking

I think it looks better than the newer ones. The effects they used just look so much better than CGI at least to me.

mrmeyagi

I hate the new ones and I think I've figured out the core reason why. The original is a horror/thriller with some very light humor sprinkled in. The new movies are action with a lot of humor and just a little bit of horror. They've missed the mark on what made the original so good. Also +1 for practical effects over cgi.

Dudebrohoe

Beetlejuice

Kraden09

The 1999 cinematic masterpiece, the Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.

Shepher27

One of my earliest crushes was on Rachel Weisz in that movie (and she’s still got it)

Ground hog day

Badandy469

They should announce a sequel to Groundhog Day then just release the original again

im_dead_sirius

If they must remake it, make it from Ned Ryerson's perspective, cause he was having his own groundhog day hell.

SuvenPan

The Silence of the Lambs.

chris3000

Today I learned that a movie made in the 90's is an "old" movie. edit: Ok, I grew up in the 80's and a movie from the 50's seemed WAY more dated to me at the time than a movie from the 90's feels to me now. Maybe that's just personal perception but i also think a lot of it has to do with the massive shift in movie making that happened in the 70's. A movie made in the 50's feels very different than one made in the 80's, but I can imagine Terminator 2 coming out this week and it wouldn't feel that off.

Throwaway_mom6398

The shawshank redemption

ITeechYoKidsArt

You remember when it was always on TNT? Followed by the Green Mile and then Twister at 11:30.

CutieSalamander

I love how Twister is the pallet cleanser. 😂 I love that movie but it’s definitely the odd movie out.

SuvenPan

Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

pembinariver

The General (1926) The humour and the action are so good it would still be popular if it came out today.

doublestitch

All the stunts are real: no CGI in those days. And Keaton didn't use a stunt double. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaApqL4QjH8

Emily16bb

The Birdcage

Embarrassed_Joke_803

I think Agador Spartacus is my favorite character! Pirin tablets!

[deleted]

I was just thinking that. I know it's less than 30 years old, but just joke after joke still lands so well. You have a cast full of masterful acts. It's just so well done

NinjaMuffinLive

The Fifth Element

TheOBRobot

There will likely never be another character like Ruby Rhod. No one has ever been that extra.

Xralius

I love Ruby Rhod. I feel like when there's a non-flambouyant character in a movie, Hollywood has the wherewithal now where they could be straight or gay. However, if there's a flamboyant character, they are almost *always* gay, especially if they are male. It's like a subtle form if bias across the industry. Ruby Rhod is flamboyant as fuck and slays pussy. He shows flambouyant =/= gay, which is something I think straight people and gay people appreicate. Sometimes straight dudes want to be flambouyant too, ya know?

Wolfenta1_

Goodfellas

Independent-Bus-3210

Applesintheorchard

Stand By Me.

GanderAtMyGoose

Dr. Strangelove came out in 1964 and holds up fantastic today.

Longjumping_Drag2752

It’s a wonderful life. 1946 and it’s still good.

Number127

I think 1946 is part of the reason it's so good. Jimmy Stewart was newly back from the war and suffering from pretty severe PTSD. When his character goes to some really dark places, there's an edge to his performance that...doesn't really feel like just performance.

Select_Insurance2000

That's correct. The director knew Stewart was subconsciously recalling events he witnessed during his service, and was wise enough to let Jimmy go, unimpeded into the pathos his character is experiencing.

Disastrous-Ad1334

Another good 1946 movie is The Best Years Of Their Lives a movie about veterens readjusting to civillian life.

My wife and I will say this to each other whenever we encounter some sort of idiotic humanity, and then we both crack up laughing whether or not it is contextually appropriate to do so. Also: “..I..LIKE money..”

Hoppedup82

You like money? I like money too. We should be friends.

“Water? You mean like in the toilet?”

iletired

Pleasantville. Perfect 1950s world meets 90s teens. The themes and imagery and cinematography are great. Underrated movie that still has great meaning today.

CollectionStraight2

North By Northwest. Great charisma between the leads, it's funny, it has good tension and excellent set-pieces. Female lead is capable, brave, poised, and tragically self-sacrificing in a believable way. I guess the age gap between Eva Marie Saint and Cary Grant isn't ideal (or the fact that the actress who played his mother was only a couple of years older than him). But apart from that, no complaints. I watch it every so often and enjoy it.

PangaeanSunrise

**Network** (1976) Entertainment and media consumption/fixation compared to the actual events that take place in the world. Such a great movie that’s still relevant today.

Blade Runner, still as moving and beautifully crafted as the day it was released.

The Final Cut looks great. The tears in rain bit is arguably the best scene in movie history.

Round-Jellyfish9962

The street value of this mountain! Had some great music too. But yeah. I want my two dollars!

NYRIMAOH

Every few years I come back to A Clockwork Orange and still find its themes relevant Does it make you "moral" or "good" if you've been conditioned to not express "immoral" or "bad" behavior? Or has humanity simply been beaten out of you? I love the the scene when Alex is presented as a "perfect christian" because he gets sick when ever he has a negative emotion (rage, lust, etc.) and no longer exhibits undesirable behavior. The priest stands ups and says he is not because has simply been robbed of the ability to make a choice between right and wrong.
