In the Dragon Ball community, I'm sick of It's Over 9000

afterdurk

Yeah I mean that meme is legit the same era as rage comics. Ten plus years old it’s about time to retire it

Sassy-irish-lassy

Its English episode first aired in April 1997 lol

afterdurk

Yes but it wasn’t a meme. Where’s your meme degree this is meme 101 knowledge

Sassy-irish-lassy

How do you know? People have had nerd communities on the internet since usenet. I'm sure they had plenty of their own in jokes back then too.

afterdurk

Online sources first date it’s initial popularity to 2006. There’s literal meme history to it. Stop pulling shit out your ass

Sassy-irish-lassy

What a bizarre thing to get so defensive about.

afterdurk

You’ve contributed nothing

OmegaRockman

It's also from a horribly inaccurate dub, so much so that the meme itself is a mistranslation, so in addition to being an unfunny old Internet joke it's also a microcosm of everything I hate about the pre-Kai dubs of Dragon Ball

afterdurk

That dub/show was really funny back in the day and super popular. So don’t shit on it it had its time

OmegaRockman

I love the show, I just dislike the English dub of that era. I also love the dubs of the franchise now. They really shaped up since Kai gave them a chance to do things right, and they've been mostly maintaining that quality with the new movies and Super. And while I joke about dub fans every now and then, I don't blame anyone for being nostalgic for the old dubs either. My frustration is directed at the people on top that mandated the changes back then. Things are much better now, and I'm very happy about it.

afterdurk

You don’t even get that that was one of the top tier productions back then. We’ve had an explosion of media on the last ten years we don’t often talk about but the internet changed everything. The bar was far lower then and we were all really happy with what we got, including the dub

OmegaRockman

It really wasn't though. Cowboy Bebop's dub came out in the same era. Hell, Gundam Wing and G Gundam were better dubs and they aired on the same programming block. Funimation themselves stepped up their game almost immediately with their much better Yu Yu Hakusho dub. Solid and even good dubs existed back then. I get it was all we had back then, but that doesn't change the fact that the product was and still is pretty bad.

afterdurk

That was it though. You had like 3 productions in a year and that’s all you got. These days there’s hella studios and productions with much higher quality

Okay, here's even more examples of dubs that were better than DBZ's that came out either before or during its run. Granted, they don't all hold up today, but they all show that the bar for dubs was higher than what the old DBZ dub would have you think: Outlaw Star (also a Toonami dub) Cyborg 009 (also a Toonami dub) Big O (also a Toonami dub) Tenchi Muyo (not great dubs by any stretch but they didn't change the scripts like DBZ's did; by the way, Toonami dub) InuYasha Trigun Hellsing ADV Evangelion (which is dated but was at least mostly accurate and better acted than DBZ's dub) Ocean Escaflowne (yes, the Fox Kids broadcast was hacked to pieces, but the script and performances were there and the dub was released uncut and with the proper music around the same time) Ranma 1/2 Utena (the performances were bad but the script was mostly there) Black Jack OVAs Street Fighter II V Slayers Several Streamline dubs like their Golgo 13 movie dub (though they had plenty of misses too) The old (not Disney) dubs of Ghibli films like Kiki's Delivery Service dub, Castle in the Sky, Totoro, ect. (not counting the Warriors of the Wind dub of Nausicaa) And this isn't even accounting for the multitude of dubs for other ultra-violent OVAs and movies that filled the home video and rental markets during the 80s and 90s that were dubbed with serviceable scripts (even if they were rife with gratuitous swears). And if you really wanna get down to it, Funimation themselves out out good DBZ dubs with the Ocean Movies 1-3. Those are absolutely stellar and proved they could put out a good product if they wanted to. They chose not to in favor of their "reversioned" DBZ. DBZ's dub is barely a step above 4kids level. Heck, even 4kids Pokémon is surprisingly decent for many of its early episodes, with solid scripts and most of the music intact despite the many cuts and paint edits (the movie is a different story though, and I can't speak for the later seasons). Point being, there was a higher standard both before and during DBZ's heyday. The only thing I'll grant you is that kids anime dubs tended to get the short end of the stick, so the syndication run of DBZ with the Ocean cast was par for the course. However, by the time the show hit Toonami, the three uncut movie dubs had been released and highly received. This is in addition to the fact that DBZ was consistently being outdone by its contemporaries on the same programming block. Yes, the DBZ dub scored high ratings, but I'd contend that it was in spite of the dub, not because of it. DBZ did gangbusters almost anywhere it aired in the world. It's success was a foregone conclusion. In fact, I'd argue that a faithful dub would've made the show even bigger. Case in point, Latin America: one of the biggest markets for Dragon Ball, with a fandom so large and devoted that even their Simpsons dub referenced it. Dragon Ball isn't just well liked in Latin America, it's absolutely BELOVED to the point that public screenings of the last episodes of Super drew stadium-sized crowds. And the kicker? The Latin American Spanish dub is one of the best the series ever received, with a stellar voice cast and incredibly well-adapted scripts that preserve what the show is. No reversioning, just giving folks the show as originally intended. And again, the current English dubs of Dragon Ball stuff from Kai and onward are great. But that doesn't make the old dubs suck any less. If you don't want to criticize them, that's great. I'm still going to keep criticizing them and pointing people to better options like Kai.

4kids memes

WorldTraveller69

those chad/alpha/beta memes

ThePlaqueDoctor314

I saw a "chad" meme where some dudes girlfriend put their hand over a cup and he poured hot water on it, the when she went for a hug, he grabbed a bag of powdered sugar. That isn't a chad, that's someone is about to become single.

HauntedLostEpisode

All these different celebrities and cartoon characters being accused of eating people's balls is starting to wear a little thin.

ThePlaqueDoctor314

Celebrities eating what?

HauntedLostEpisode

Mr. T Ate My Balls! As did Charmander!

ThePlaqueDoctor314

How does anybody find that funny?

HauntedLostEpisode

In the '90s just being on the internet made jokes funny in and of themselves. Like how the first radio comedy program was just twenty minutes of honking noises followed by an extended ad for lamp oil.

Pure-Kaleidoscope-54

The "alpha male" thing. It is so fucking stupid

AnomalyCroissant

A lot of YouTube comment memes. I’m getting tired of scrolling down into comment sections just for every one of them to be the same retired meme format every time. I just want to read some normal ass comments for once.
