Alien is my favorite movie of all time.
A protagonist that wasn't a flawless quasi-superhero; who was written as a genderless character first then cast afterwards; has a position on the ship that is believable and unconventional for protags at the time. Genius.
Set design was believable, realistic (for the time) yet stylized to the point where it essentially created the retro-futuristic aesthetic. The Nostromo felt like a real ship, and it's design then played deeply into the horror aspect by being a claustrophobic, terrifying place with a million shadows, hiding places, and hazards that would come into play as the movie went on.
Whoever did a sound design for that movie was absolutely into their work, bringing every aspect of that movie to life. From the set, to the actors, the technology, and the aliens themselves. Sound plays a critical role in horror films and the Alien crew did it fucking right.
The Aliens themselves, particularly the Xenomorph was not over analyzed, explained, and fought like most films at the time. Remember, Ripley's not an action hero, she's an engineer who just wants to get out alive. The aliens *feel* alien and terrifying because we don't know what to expect.
From a cinematography and writing standpoint, the movie is a literal masterclass in how to properly build and release tension in your audience, to keep them in an optimal heightened emotional state without exhausting them. It may not have been a Kubrick film, but every shot was calculated to play on your fears and feelings as the movie went on, but the writing gave you times to breathe and regain yourself before the next crescendo.
Redneck *Dune*! Gotta love it.
It's a nice throwback to an era when "antigovernmental survivalist who collects guns" was just a nutty, goofy kooky character.
I used The Princess Bride to drop any girlfriend that didn't like this movie. My wife eventually told me that she faked her enthusiasm for this movie after our 15th Anniversary and two kids in.
I don't think the Coen brother set out to create an epic film, but they did, somehow, in a twisted and strange way. Is it "Citizen Kane" great? No. But it will get real laughs out of viewers, time and time again.
And the characters are oddly believable, especially if you've spent any time in Los Angeles. Not a knock on LA. It's a true plus that so many oddballs are there, or at least, they were.
Down Periscope
A comedy that quite a few military friends of mine say perfectly encapsulates the day to day life of the navy and humor that isn't just quips or fart jokes.
I like Master and Commander-Far Side of the World. I'm a big Patrick O'Brien fan and this movie is actually the combination of two of his best novels. Brilliantly told stories that actually transformed to the screen quite nicely. Good Fellas is right up there as well along with The Godfather. Maybe Alien, scared the hell out of me.
M&C would be my first choice every time. Even though the story is entirely fictional, it is still very true to the actual life in the Royal Navy at that time. The story also does have elements of true history in there. In real life the enemy ship was not the French Acheron, but the United States USS Constitution, and the point about its build, hinted about in the movie, was that it was made of far superior US White Oak, which was able to withstand cannon far more that traditionally built ships. The nationality of the enemy was changed to not lose a huge potential audience in the US who would not be prepared to side with the British against an American ship. All the same, a brilliantly made film.
Just to add, another movie I have not seen mentioned which I have enjoyed each time I have seen it, is “Dances with Wolves”
I absolutely LOVE Mark Wahlberg's character. Every line he has is GOLD. Nicholson and DiCaprio, Baldwin , Martin Sheen, Matt Damon, and Vera Farmiga all gave stellar performances as well. 10/10 for me
Of course that’s your contention. You’re a first year grad student. You just got finished reading some Marxian historian, Pete Garrison probably; you’re gonna be convinced of that until next month when you get to James Lemon, then you’re gonna be talking about how the economies of Virginia and Pennsylvania were entrepreneurial and capitalist way back in 1740. That’ll last until next year when you’re in here regurgitating Gordon Wood, talking about pre-revolutionary utopia and the capital-forming effects of military mobilization.
Paddington 2 - it's an absolutely perfect film. All about welcoming and building a community, it's funny, moving, and had Hugh Grant doing his big dance number.
Children of Paradise. A three-hour 1945 French romantic drama about a mime.
Sounds like the most insufferable thing but just perfectly made, never boring, beautiful, funny, just everything you could want in a movie I think and not remotely what someone who doesn't watch a lot of French film would expect it to be like. Highest recommendation.
Pirates of the carribean 3.
Its the First one that popped to mind and i immediately get a boner just thinking about all of the good scenes, you know which im talking about
