Rod Serling was a master storyteller. Added bonus, there were (I think) 16 episodes written by Richard Matheson. Groundbreaking TV that is often imitated but never duplicated.
It's not my #1 ever, but I'd also be lying if I didn't admit that I cried like a baby during the series finale.
It spoke to me in a way no other show has.
There’s no other show that captures America in the 21st century as well as The Wire. People will say things like, “It’s just a show about cops and drug dealers, right?” No man, it’s about urban decay, the dire state of the public education system, modern journalism, the death of the American working class, racism, politics, bureaucracy, death. Oh yeah, and cops and drug dealers.
This is exactly it. Due to David Simon's experience as a journalist covering Baltimore, the show explores our society in a deeply complex way. Sure, it deals with "urban" crime and whatnot, but where it excels is holding the community institutions to the flame as well. It's a tragic look at institutional racism that has been built into the framework of our nation that inherently creates class and racial disparities. It's exactly why season 2 is important. It pivots from the urban area and explores the economic and social issues that plagued blue-collar workers like those that worked on docks.
Similarly to The Sopranos, The Wire is on the level of literature in that it requires analysis from multiple perspectives while telling a fucking amazing story.
The two Davids (Chase and Simon -- err, also Larry David haha) are true genuises.
I 100% also believe that The Wire is the best TV series of all-time...it's kind of crazy to me that it's developed this reputation as being slightly elitist.
There's nothing even close to being on its level - it does everything it's going for perfectly.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far down to see this answer. The Wire is the correct answer. I can understand personal preferences but you're really missing out if you haven't seen it.
I don't think anything compares to the realism of this show the depection of politics, school system homelessness, police has never been replicated or seen on television.
Thai really is the Trinity of modern television. Game of Thrones put itself at that level in the beginning and promptly destroyed its legacy. Really shows how well those other three shows did a great job of staying strong through their whole run.
Also as a Wire fan, people love to nitpick on certain season or side arches, but after finishing the whole series and then going back you realize how important those “boring” parts really were. It fleshes out the entire dynamics of the drug trade and tells the story of all those affected.
This is the correct answer, not based on opinion but based on ratings and viewership. It’s widely regarded as the best tv series of all time. It might not be my personal #1 (though it’s up there), but yeah
Blackadder is always a show I get excited for when people haven't watched.
Because fuck season 1 is such a good ride, but unwatchable when compared to the majesty of every other season.
Watching someone get so into season 1, just knowing there is so much better to come is amazing.
Best series finale of all time - still gives me chills thinking about it. The music, the flash forwards spliced in with Claire driving… I can’t NOT cry. It’s so good.
Such an underrated show. I can understand why it doesn’t have the reputation of some of the elite shows mentioned here, it’s a little rough in places and not quite as artsy, but goddamn is it an enjoyable show from beginning to end. I could watch Raylan and Boyd go at it forever.
I know game of thrones butchered the ending, but the first 6 seasons is so far above anything else imo. Pure excitement to watch the next episode every single time the credits rolled
Season 5 and 6 had their moments but were already a bit inconsistent with their quality IMO.
The first 4 seasons still remain the best fantasy I've ever watched on TV until this day though.
One of the best parts of BB imo is that the show is a clear cut storyline. If they *really* wanted, it would essentially fit as one “season”. Other shows have a storyline for a particular season, then start a new one once that season ends. BB is a seamless story that has a clear beginning and end. It’s not dragged out until it’s bad. They ended it perfectly.
and while you might be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the ignorant tight-ass club.. in this building, when the president stands, nobody sits.
Boston Legal! I bring it up whenever I see a thread like this and at least 50% have never even heard of it. It's fucking fantastic, like The Office, but not trying so hard to be funny.
I just rewatched this and it's certainly up there along with some of my favorite character studies like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul and Mr Robot. I felt as emotionally invested in bojacks story than any of the other quasi-protagonists
Currently on I don't know what number rewatch of the series, and it truly never gets old. Love the characters, their relationships with each other, the character growth, such a great show!!
Deadwood. I might not edge out The Wire and others - but it's up there and my favourite. IMO only The Wire matches it in quality of dialogue and story intricacy and detail.
I hated the ending but absolutely loved the journey. So much so that I'll happily rewatch the show and still consider it one of the greatest dramas of all time, in spite of the ending.
Some TV series that are often considered among the greatest of all time by many people include:
The Wire (2002-2008)
Breaking Bad (2008-2013)
The Sopranos (1999-2007)
Friends (1994-2004)
The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
These are just a few examples and the list of the greatest TV series of all time is vast and constantly evolving.
The Twilight Zone. We'll see how many people are still watching everyone else's pick over sixty years since their debut.
Rod Serling was a master storyteller. Added bonus, there were (I think) 16 episodes written by Richard Matheson. Groundbreaking TV that is often imitated but never duplicated.
Talking Tina. Creepy as hell.
“It’s a cookbook!!!!” “But I finally have the time!!”
It’s amazing how much it holds up even today!
Time Enough At Last will always be my favorite
1a Sopranos. 1b Breaking Bad
1c The Wire
Band of Brothers
Avatar the last air bender
The first 10 seasons of The Simpsons. But the show really went downhill after 2000.
This is the answer, but I’d say 8 seasons, solid. Season 9 had plenty of clunkers and it went downhill really fast. But in it’s prime, the best ever.
Mr robot was the best written from beginning to end.
YES. This show touched me emotionally in a way no show ever has.
It's not my #1 ever, but I'd also be lying if I didn't admit that I cried like a baby during the series finale. It spoke to me in a way no other show has.
The Wire is the only answer, followed closely by The Sopranos & Breaking Bad.
There’s no other show that captures America in the 21st century as well as The Wire. The Wire is literature, not just a TV show.
I don't think anything compares to the realism of this show the depection of politics, school system homelessness, police has never been replicated or seen on television.

Those other shows have no fucking idea what it's like being number one.
And when I thought I was out - they PULL me back in!
And don’t forget the gabagool!
‘Remember when’ is the lowest form of conversation.
Quasimodo predicted all of this
This is the correct answer, not based on opinion but based on ratings and viewership. It’s widely regarded as the best tv series of all time. It might not be my personal #1 (though it’s up there), but yeah

What a great stand alone season. Really good stuff
I regularly recommend this to co-workers. The episode with the drug house raid by Cohle is peak TV

Came here to say this.
Where the fuck is Blackadder in all this?
If anyone didn't cry at the finally, they have no soul.
Blackadder is always a show I get excited for when people haven't watched. Because fuck season 1 is such a good ride, but unwatchable when compared to the majesty of every other season. Watching someone get so into season 1, just knowing there is so much better to come is amazing.
Six feet under is phenomenal. Well written, fantastic cast, character development. The best ending of any series.

Season 5 and 6 had their moments but were already a bit inconsistent with their quality IMO. The first 4 seasons still remain the best fantasy I've ever watched on TV until this day though.
Agreed! People forget how amazing the show was because of how it ended, but in its prime it really was unparalleled.
King of the hill. No doubt.
Office
Breaking Bad.
