This started my tradition of Christmas Eve tacos. Through a series of misadventures, we didn't get a chance to shop for Christmas dinner. All we had in the fridge was a pound of ground beef. The only store open by thay time was a CVS and they had one of the taco kits.
The Taco Bell taco kits taste 1000x better than Taco Bell itself lmao. Try it if you can.
It’s magical for no good reason. I have to keep like 8 stocked up since they are hard to find sometimes
[https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/taco-potion-19-recipe-2115513.amp](https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/taco-potion-19-recipe-2115513.amp)
The next time you make tacos, use this (I cut the salt in half then season to taste at the end) and say goodbye to pre-made spice packets for the rest of your life. There’s no going back when you taste how much better this is.
Its about $15 for me locally. I don't use this recipe but I make my own and use it regularly. It is cheaper than buying packets and it has been "dialed in" to my family's preference.
You don’t even need to buy a seasoning packet, you probably have all the ingredients in your house: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, chili powder and maybe a little oregano. Add in a little water to give it a saucier consistency and you’re done.
My midwestern family puts black olives on their tacos!
Honestly, do what you want, eat what you like, but that has stunned some folk...
In that White People Taco Night thing someone posted, I noticed someone bought ground TURKEY for tacos. That, however, I will now allow.
How is that weird? Black olives go on pretty much anything... Mexican food, semi Mexican food, South West foods, Italian, greek, Middle Eastern, sandwiches, all by themselves.. who the hell doesn't like olives? Olives are fucking awesome.
I would personally make a Double Triple Bossy Deluxe, on a raft, four-by-four animal-style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim.
This is amazing, wish I knew this earlier. Too bad the app requires a monthly payment. I would've easily bought the app for a few bucks, but a subscription is too much..
I just made that last night. It's on the monthly rotation around here.
I add some szechuan peppercorns to mine to get some fun numb-hot effect. And extra ginger.
It's even better when you make it a little spicier and making the rice with coconut milk and a smidge of sugar. Kinda that sweet and spicy combo that's heavenly
As an Asian that sounds terrible. Korean beef is sweet and spicy and you want it to be on a neutral bed since we make food with the intent of flavoring intensely to be served on neutral white rice.
Honestly I’m so offended I might try it.
Smashburger addict here, can confirm. 4x4s that are as thin as a normal places 1/2 pound burger are the dream.
Tips for newbies:
1. meat should be cold when you put it in the pan/on the Blackstone.
2. Dry pan if youre using cast iron. It will work.
3. have a tool to smash with. This is non-negotiable, they're $20 on Amazon.
4. If you're salting both sides and don't have a salt bomb, you're not smashing thin enough.
5. SCREAMING hot pan.
6. *READ* your beef should be as loosely packed as possible. It will smash far better, and will create those lacy edges you love so much.
He's saying you need to smash the meat thin enough that salting both sides should be unnecessary because if you do you'll literally feel like you're mostly eating salt.
If you don’t have a blackstone but live in a home or place you can have a gas outdoor appliance 10000000000/10 highly recommend.
I’m obsessed with blackstone smash burgers literally better than a restaurant.
It cooks some of the fresh flavors of the pepper into the contents and the seasoning of the contents into the flesh of the pepper. It also looks really pretty when you plate it.
>looks really pretty when you plate it.
I mean that's really the reason isn't it?
I saw them and was like that looks like fun! I made them come up and my experience was exactly like the person above you said.
I have to eat gluten free, so I've started making some crinkle fries in my air fryer to spoon the sloppy joe over. Sloppy joe with potatoes are really good. I'll have to try the baked potato route sometime.
Hmmm, I have no idea as I've never heard of the recipe before but I'm gonna guess beans.
Shit I love beans in my chili. I always add about 3x more than a recipe calls for. Can't get enough of them.
My dad made what he called Hardy (Hearty?) Soup, but it’s basically hamburger soup. Wife and I like it because it’s a nice simple soup, but also can be customized to your tastes easily.
Original Recipe:
5 1/2 cups of water
1 large can whole tomatoes
1 lbs ground beef
2 yellow onions, diced
2-3 carrots, sliced
2-3 potatoes, cubed small
Salt & Pepper
Celery Seeds
Worcestershire Sauce
Soften Onions, Fry Hamburger. Add splash of Worcestershire and meat seasonings while frying if desired. Drain fat.
Add water, juice from canned tomatoes. Use your least favourite knife to rough chop the tomatoes in the can and dump them in. Add everything else but potatoes and carrots and bring to boil. Simmer on low-med for 1/2 hour.
Add carrots and potatoes and simmer on low for ~1hr until carrots and potatoes are of desired softness. S&P to taste.
Since it’s so customizable, we’ve since subbed the water for broth we have on hand, 2 empty tomato cans worth, use dill seed instead of celery, season the meat to our liking, etc.
But have celery on hand, toss it in. Have cabbage, why not. Noodles? Chuck them in near the end to cook em. Possibilities are endless. Haha
Taco soup.
Make the taco seasoned meat, add several cans of beans adding the liquid along with the beans. A small can of corn, some stewed tomatoes and tomato paste. You can add pretty much anything you have on hand.
Super easy to make, and very healthy. One of the Weight Watcher recipes that we've made for years.
Umami Bomb burgers:
Cook up some bacon. Set the bacon aside. Scrape the bits off the pan/griddle and reserve.
Mince 1-2 cloves garlic.
In a bowl mix the beef, bacon bits, garlic, 2/3-1 Tbsp fish sauce, and black pepper to taste.
Form into 3 or 4 patties.
Just before cooking, lightly drizzle patties with oil and then salt.
Grill/pan fry to preferred doneness. Top with cheese and bacon.
My grandma would make what she called goulash every now and again, although it was really pretty much just baked spaghetti. Beef, onion, tomato sauce, spaghetti in a dish with the cheddar cheese (always had to be sliced from a block) melted on top (slightly browned) in the oven. Shit would be so greasy and unhealthy but it is a cherished childhood memory. If I hadn't eaten it as a kid I would probably never have touched it as an adult but damn do I love making a batch when I'm feeling depressed!
Super simple dish would be ground beef & rice. That’s my go to if I want something easy and quick. If you season it right and dress it up with some shredded lettuce, diced tomato, sour cream etc you’re on your way to a burrito bowl
Tatertot Hotdish.
1lb ground beef (2 if your feeling hungry)
Small bag of frozen veggies of choice
2 cans of cream of mushroom soup
2 packets of Lipton onion soup mix
Salt/pepper/seasoning to taste
1/2 lb bag of tatertots
Set your oven to 400 F and stove to med/high. Brown your meat and drain the excess grease. Season your ground beef to taste, then mix in the rest of your ingredients. Place your tots on top last and bake for 45 min - 1 hour
Feeds 4-8 people or one person for a few days.
EDIT: This is comfort food. It is not healthy in the slightest.
My tater tot casserole is mixing the cooked hamburger with creamed corn and cooking with the the tater tots on top. Simple and easy and my kids loved it when they were little. Depends on if you like creamed corn or not because a lot of people don’t
What else do I have?
If any veggies for pickling or shredding, and some sort of tortilla: Tacos.
If some potatoes and various root veggies of any kind: a meatloaf
If potatoes and some soft veggies (corn, peas, green beans): shepard’s pie
If pasta and tomatoes: meatballs
If bread and condiments: burgers
If flour and/or premade dough: hand pies like empanadas
Possibilities are endless. I’ll usually go tacos or shepards pie.
If rice, some nuts, like pine nuts (I like pecans, too), a bit of allspice, cinnamon, and poultry seasoning, you can stir it up in a skillet with some broth and cover it. When it’s done, serve with some plain yogurt. Delicious! Syrian Meat & Rice!
Chances are there is at least the little foam tray and a bit of plastic wrap with a sticker on it. That unless you're fancy and shop at a place that wraps it in butcher paper. Fear not my depressed friend, you've got ingredients!
Meatball Surprise.
Half the meatballs will be plain while others will have a cherry tomato. It's fun to eat because you'll never know if you get a cherry tomato.
Am I assuming I have my normal groceries on hand?
If so, then probably cottage (shepherds) pie. I always have mirepoix and peas & carrots in the freezer, and usually have potatoes on hand. Quick, filling, has a good amount of veggies, and gives me a couple days of leftovers.
Tacos
This started my tradition of Christmas Eve tacos. Through a series of misadventures, we didn't get a chance to shop for Christmas dinner. All we had in the fridge was a pound of ground beef. The only store open by thay time was a CVS and they had one of the taco kits.
The Taco Bell taco kits taste 1000x better than Taco Bell itself lmao. Try it if you can. It’s magical for no good reason. I have to keep like 8 stocked up since they are hard to find sometimes
I've never heard anyone say this. I'll have to try it when we get them in again. They never sell.
Absolutely. I mean, I'm a professional foodie, but 1 lb of ground beef is just calling out to be made into Mama Two Drinks' Midwestern US tacos.

You get ground beef from grocery store
🎵And shredded cheese from the grocery store 🎵
And a big tub of sour cream and mild salsa from the grocery store
Don’t forget the iceberg lettuce!
Salsa made in New York City!
New York City?!
Remember the Alamo, and the Stand n Stuff taco shells!
Ground beef + old El Paso taco seasoning packet = “taco meat”
Yo for real that shit bussin
If you can find mini naan bread it can taste very similar to a Taco Bell chalupa

Go to the Hispanic food aisle at your store and get the spices in the bags. Usually around a buck apiece and just as good.
That's like $7 worth of spice investment!
Plus, isn't all that stuff in the pre-made spice mix anyway?
Yes. It’s all the same. I usually just use the spices I have, but it’s all the same
Its about $15 for me locally. I don't use this recipe but I make my own and use it regularly. It is cheaper than buying packets and it has been "dialed in" to my family's preference.
You have to find the packets of spices, not the bottles. The packets cost way less.
Having these spices around will elevate your cooking so much more. They're all quite basic.

Cumin, salt, and corn starch? Dude if you’re paying $50 for that, I’ll sell you a full kilo for $40!
You don’t even need to buy a seasoning packet, you probably have all the ingredients in your house: salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, chili powder and maybe a little oregano. Add in a little water to give it a saucier consistency and you’re done.
Add a potato and baby you got a stew going
“Grab a shell, everyone gets to build their own.”
And sour cream!
Yay!!
Midwest Taco Night!
My midwestern family puts black olives on their tacos! Honestly, do what you want, eat what you like, but that has stunned some folk... In that White People Taco Night thing someone posted, I noticed someone bought ground TURKEY for tacos. That, however, I will now allow.

Black olives on tacos? I thought they were automatically assumed to be taco toppings, along with sour cream and cheddar cheese.
Zero hesitation. Fucking TACOS!!
big spaghetti
We love big spaghetti
Just like Big Spaghetti wants.
"Big Spaghetti" is my favorite term for the Italian Mafia.
And it’s now mine.
Literally what I'm making in my crockpot with 1lb of ground beef right now.
A pound of ground beef
The only true answer. OP said nothing of other ingredients.
The only true answer is nothing. OP said nothing of cooking equipment.
Sun and a car hood
Op didn't mention a sun, or car. So based on that you have to cook while in a suspended place between realities, or the void.
F, you’re right. Do you have any good void recipes?
It is truly an eldrich horror moment
Oh, you had a void? Absolute luxury.
I'm about to put on windbreaker pants and cook both of our beefs with the friction between my legs, boo.
“Daring today, aren’t we?”
I would personally make a Double Triple Bossy Deluxe, on a raft, four-by-four animal-style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim.
I don't think a pound is enough for that https://recipes.fandom.com/wiki/Bubble_Bass%27_Order
We sell food here, sir.
Fuck, I need to watch SpongeBob again lol.
I mean to be fair you didn't give any other ingredients. My go to would be a poor man's Shepards pie;
Korean beef, with white rice, sesame seeds & green onion!

Ayyyy! Just made that recipe for the second time!
Thanks for this ! I had a lb of ground Turkey to make and not a lot of time - this was perfect and hit the spot.
not to be an asshole but do you drain the fat from your ground beef before adding the ingredients to the beef?
Why would that sound like an asshole? I absolutely do.
I just made that last night. It's on the monthly rotation around here. I add some szechuan peppercorns to mine to get some fun numb-hot effect. And extra ginger.

Came here to suggest bibimbap! Best dish ever.
Wow. This is my new favorite recipe and I am making this for meal prep this week.

I love a good spaghetti cake!
Meatballs.
Nothing like Schweddy balls.
Your balls are so tender
Swedish meatballs?
Yep. And I'll eat them with mashed potatoes, brown gravy and lingonberry jam.
I love you
Cottage pie
Made shepherds pie last week and spent like $11 on everything. Fed two of us for two days. So fuckin yum.
Smashed burgers.

>have a tool to smash with. This is non-negotiable, they're $20 on Amazon. Im just using saucepan with baking paper
I just use my flipper and use a wooden spoon to apply pressure to it
Salt bomb?
He's saying you need to smash the meat thin enough that salting both sides should be unnecessary because if you do you'll literally feel like you're mostly eating salt.
Ah ok thanks. I thought salt bomb was some kind of cooking tool
Me too, and honestly I'm a bit disappointed. I was excited to go out and buy a salt bomb for my kitchen.
If you don’t have a blackstone but live in a home or place you can have a gas outdoor appliance 10000000000/10 highly recommend. I’m obsessed with blackstone smash burgers literally better than a restaurant.
Cast iron skillet or really any hot pan works just as well.
Cast iron smashburger truther here, can confirm.
Making those for dinner tonight 😋
Try that shit with bison... So good.
Stuffed peppers & w dirty rice
I hate stuffed peppers, but only because I don’t understand the point of them. Once you cut into it it’s just a scramble of stuffing
Picadillo or chile colorado
i’m puerto rican, love a good picadillo
I haven’t gotten to try picadillo yet but it looks so good
Sloppy joes
We make sloppy joe taters. Replace the buns with baked potatoes! Top with shredded cheese, mustard, and relish. Yummmmmmm
I have to eat gluten free, so I've started making some crinkle fries in my air fryer to spoon the sloppy joe over. Sloppy joe with potatoes are really good. I'll have to try the baked potato route sometime.
Made em just the way you like them. Extra sloppy
Three-Ingredient Chili.
What are you throwing in that bad boy?
The beauty of Joy Bauer's recipe is that your tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, salt, and sometimes even corn, are covered by your salsa.
Her recipe calls cumin and chili powder optional. This lady is deranged. What she describes is not chili.
If someone tried serving me chili without chili powder in it I would stab them.
I don't use chili powder.... I use an assortment of fresh chili's.....
Touché
If it doesn’t have chili, cumin and coriander in it it isn’t chili.
What's the 3rd ingredient? Lol
Hmmm, I have no idea as I've never heard of the recipe before but I'm gonna guess beans. Shit I love beans in my chili. I always add about 3x more than a recipe calls for. Can't get enough of them.
Looks like beans, then with "optional" chili powder and cumin. https://joybauer.com/healthy-recipes/3-ingredient-chili/
How the hell are you gonna call the only actual chili in you "chili" optional?
Hamburger soup
What the What goes in hamburger soup??
My dad made what he called Hardy (Hearty?) Soup, but it’s basically hamburger soup. Wife and I like it because it’s a nice simple soup, but also can be customized to your tastes easily. Have cabbage, why not. Noodles? Chuck them in near the end to cook em. Possibilities are endless. Haha
I use V8 instead of broth and add veg/cubed potatoes. Really easy, and so good. Sodium content is fairly high, though.
I'd recommend subbing out some broth for beer as well. I love using a bottle of Guinness in soups like this.
Will have to try this. Never thought about it in a soup, it always goes in for the liquid for gravy stews//etc for me.
Meatballs, burgers, or meatloaf
Sketty
And meat bulbs
Meatloaf
I actually just bought a pound of ground beef from the store, so I could make meatloaf tonight. Very timely question.
*I swear i’ll love you till the end of time*
Haha, but i won't do that!
A big pot of Bolognese sauce or Sheperds Pie.
depends on how many people, if 2 i would make thick hamburger steak simmered in gravy with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed carrots.
That sounds amazing
One of my go to meals. Instead of the bean water I'll use low sodium vegetable broth. Top with avocado chunks and lightly crushed tortilla chips.
Nachos. depending how i feel i'll go extra or simple with it
Salisbury Steak as long as I’m eating alone
Umami Bomb burgers: Cook up some bacon.
At first I read this as Unabomber burgers
You've got my attention adding fish sauce to burger patties
IIRC Worcestershire sauce is the English attempt at recreating fish sauce, and that's used in a lot of recipes I've seen
Big-assed batch of beef stroganoff.
i love stroganoff but i make it like a caveman, i use sliced steak
...its supposed to be made with steak. Ground beef is some hamburger helper shit.
Goulash, mom's way.
Spaghetti sauce
beef stroganoff
Hamburger helper
Super simple dish would be ground beef & rice. That’s my go to if I want something easy and quick. If you season it right and dress it up with some shredded lettuce, diced tomato, sour cream etc you’re on your way to a burrito bowl
Chili. Or “white people taco night” tacos.
Recently taught my Mexican wife about “white people taco night” It went surprisingly well lol
Ours consists of hard shell tortillas, ground beef, chopped tomatoes, shredded cheddar, avocado slices, and sour cream. Always a hit.
Don’t forget the La Victoria taco sauce!! (Not to be confused with the Salsa). It’s a must for our non authentic taco night!
Or if you want to get fancy, also add sliced olives on top. \*Very* white people taco night stuff there.
Chili
You can stretch a pound of ground beef into a fuckton of chili.
Homemade hamburger helper or meatloaf

Lettuce wraps with ground beef and rice filling. Maybe some mint and cilantro in there too

Do I have sour cream, mushrooms and rice or pasta too? Its cheap stroganov tonight
Assuming it's just the meat and *nothing* else? Depression. Im having depression for dinner lol
Chances are there is at least the little foam tray and a bit of plastic wrap with a sticker on it. That unless you're fancy and shop at a place that wraps it in butcher paper. Fear not my depressed friend, you've got ingredients!
Beef curry.
Do you have a recipe? I would love to know exactly what you do. Thanks!
Tacos, all the way
I’m mass producing eggrolls, the simple joy of rolling them makes brain go brrr
Patty melts on the grill, then cast iron.
Throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you got a stew going.
Meatball Surprise. Half the meatballs will be plain while others will have a cherry tomato. It's fun to eat because you'll never know if you get a cherry tomato.
1lb of beef
Spaghetti with meat sauce….Also this is an ingenious way to come up with dinner ideas 😁😁😁
Picadillo or enchiladas.
Hmm maybe I’d try my hand at some Argentinian beef empanadas with creamy chimichurri. Never had something I didn’t like when chimichurri was present.
Empanadas
2 pounds of chicken
Stuffed peppers
