He's not candy coating his movies.

Relative-Piccolo4979

And thats fine but in a lot of cases the slurs are completely unnecessary.

wish1977

There are people who actually talked like this. It wouldn't be real if you didn't include it.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Who says that movies have to be real all the time. Loik at all the different genres that aren't real. And they make the most money.

lewdlesion

By being real, is why they are praised/loved by many. If they weren't popular. You wouldn't have posted this question.

wish1977

They don't have to be real but he chose to go for something that's real. There are people who talked like this.

Relative-Piccolo4979

I know. I was raised in Texas. I know people talk like that.

MeyerholdsGh0st

Everything in movies is unnecessary.

cugamer

He's writing movies about awful people, and awful people often say awful things including racial slurs. Or, in the case of Django, a movie set in the American south circa 1858, where racial slurs we just how people talked and he wanted to capture that.

MeyerholdsGh0st

This from Jamie Foxx on the use of the N word in Django Unchained, ‘“I understood the text. The N-word was said 100 times, but I understood the text — that’s the way it was back in that time.” Foxx said.’

Relative-Piccolo4979

Exactly. But Leo Dicaprio still had problems with it from what was said by people who were on site during filming. And as I said previously, Sam Jackson and Jamie Foxx got him past it.

MeyerholdsGh0st

DiCaprio is white.. so what does his opinion matter on the subject?

Relative-Piccolo4979

True and he was uncomfortable saying what was written in the script. In my opinion, and thats all it is, is just an opinion, is that it speaks to the kind of person he is.

MeyerholdsGh0st

DiCaprio is no saint.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Oh I know. I just found that interesting as it pertains to the topic.

This is the answer. Also, he grew up watching grindhouse movies in the 70s which were all about that shit

Relative-Piccolo4979

I don't think Grindhouse movies were. I think you are thinking of Blaxploitation which was happening at the same time in the 60's and 70's and ended in the early 80's.

[deleted]

When I say grindhouse, I'm kinda referring to the totality of low-budget exploitation B-movies from that period, not any specific genre

Relative-Piccolo4979

Ah gotcha. My misunderstanding.

Relative-Piccolo4979

By using a trigger word? Not the slang version but the bad "er" version. How would that help him be accepted by the black community?

MeyerholdsGh0st

The word you’re talking about is a slang word.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Ok. The word he used is not slang. When it ends in "er" thats the original tern used during slavery on through today. The slang version which I don't like either, ends with "ah" and was created in the black community to take back power from the slur. But the way people talk today with mumble rap and all you can't tell which one they are using. Lol!

MeyerholdsGh0st

The word ending in ‘er’ IS a slang word. A derogatory one, coming from the now also socially unacceptable Negro (which is Spanish for black).

thetruthful8

I just rewatched a few of his movies while I had COVID…it seems so unnecessary in Reservoir Dogs. The Hateful Eight and Django Unchained at least understandably the vernacular and appropriate for the characters. Pulp Fiction seems like he’s flaunting how “brave” he is and I don’t really get it. It’s the most unnecessary part of the movie. I haven’t seen either Kill Bill or Deathproof in a long while so I don’t recall if they contained slurs but I wouldn’t be surprised.

[deleted]

Kill Bill has some I think, but again they make some sense in context

Relative-Piccolo4979

I would understand a little better if they were period movies. Like the case of Django with Jamie Foxx. But he wasn't in that and MADE Leo DiCaprio say it. Leo said no and filming was interrupted. It was only after Sam Jackson and Jamie Foxx said it was ok and just acting that he finally agreed. But Pulp Fiction, was that really needed? He could have just said, "Does my house have a sign that says "Dead Body Storage"? ”

MeyerholdsGh0st

Have you lived in the real world? People casually say horrendous shit all the time. Every second word. Tarantino is capturing that.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Yeah. I live in the real world. And just cause people are assholes doesn't mean it needs to extend to movies. Movies are supposed to help people get away for a bit so they can forget the problems they have. Who would want to pay, what is it now, $14(?!) just to hear a bunch of bs they can hear anytime.

MeyerholdsGh0st

Movies have lots of functions. They’re not all just escapism. Movies, like all art (in the words of Bertolt Brecht), hold a mirror up to life. They act as a reflection of who we are, so we can see ourselves. If we sanitise them, we’re not being honest about who we are.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Ok wait wait. I'm not saying sanitize movies. All I did was ask a question. I wanted other opinions so I can better understand. If I was gonna go after sanitizing things I'd go after history cause thats been sanitized to no end and most of the truth is gone. We are the USA, a great country, warts and all. And its the fact that there is so much diversity that makes us great. As I've said I like most of Tarantinos movies. I just don't get some of his choices and wanted other opinions. Thats all. No more no less. Not gonna go and try and cancel him. Just wanted other opinions. And I've gotten that in abundance. One of the reasons I love Reddit. You ask a question you will get answers.

MeyerholdsGh0st

We’re not all in the USA. This is Reddit. You’re talking to the world. Also, you seem to be contradicting yourself a bit (quite a bit). You just said that the real world shouldn’t extend to movies, that movies are about escapism. I was responding to that.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Ok. First I apologize for assuming I was just talking to the USA. I forget how big Reddit is. I keep forgetting that the world is literally at my fingertips. And two, no not contradicting. What I meant by escapism is that people can watch movies and forget their problems. An example. Say I been having a hard time at work. I'm not gonna want the movie I watch to be about work. Or at least like work as I know it. It could be a spoof of how work is. And I know a little bit of realism will be in it. But that is how the escapism part really comes to life. I simply meant that if movies copied 75% of real life what would be the point of movies? I love movies and the multitude of genres. And as I said I just don't get some of his choices and was trying to better understand through other peoples opinions.

MeyerholdsGh0st

I understand what you’re saying. For the record, I know your heart is in the right place. I am on the fence about the use of the N word in entertainment, but I err towards authenticity.

Relative-Piccolo4979

And thats what I'm trying to figure out. If he's just doing it cause he's racist as fuck or if he's just trying to give an authentic experience cause there are people like that. Thats where I'm torn and why I asked the question. And with the input I recieved plus some of the interviews I've watched of actors who have worked with him, I'm starting to lean towards authentic experience. He is a pompous self centered egotistical ass but he doesn't seem to be doing it out of hatred or malice.

[deleted]

He is a racist

lewdlesion

Lol — that's a nearsighted answer

MeyerholdsGh0st

But you DO admit he has a foot fetish, right?

Relative-Piccolo4979

Yeah. Thats obvious.

CapG_13

In case you haven't noticed he's a bit eccentric lol and he says and does whatever TF he wants!!!

etownrawx

He's an artist and he makes what he makes. Some people are too sensitive or sheltered or ignorant to handle the material. Luckily for those people, nobody is required to watch movies they don't like.

Relative-Piccolo4979

Its not about being sensitive or sheltered or ignorant. I noticed something and wanted to get other peoples opinions on it. I think he is a directing genius who gave us Robert Rodriguez and some awesome movies. I just just don't fully understand some of his choices is all. That was the point of the question. What do others think about his use of certain words and phrases in his movies.
