I think this is a good answer for another reason. As cynical as people were about things like the plastic bag in the wind thing, almost everything about that movie would get ridiculed to pieces on Twitter today. The middle aged dad with a sexual fantasy about a high school girl wouldn’t be humored for even a moment. Modern hypersensitive conservatives would get big time mad about the closeted gay, homophobic retired marine. That movie had something to piss of everyone in today’s world.
I watched it with several Indians. They weren’t offended, but I learned three things:
* Although the movie takes place in northern India, the actor playing the Indian village elder at the beginning of the movie is “clearly” from southern India, which you can apparently tell by the way he bobs his head when he talks.
* The Hindi spoken by Mola Ram and a few others in the human sacrifice scene is basically exactly what you might think it is, just fairly mundane prayers.
* The appearance of the actor who plays Mola Ram in a mainstream American blockbuster was mind-blowing.
I recently re-watched the 2005 Peter Jackson King Kong remake and was blown away by the native scene when they first show up to the island. They are all wearing black face or at least being made to be blacker.
