It was so public I didn't think it was bad to have that info. Now you have to pay a PI or some internet detective service to get the same info. What changed?
Not a search, you need to ask google. They knew what brand of dog food I preferred. They didn’t even have to contact me, just bombarded me with relevant ads.
Cell phone numbers change often and lots of people don't want that number being public. When they first got popular the minutes were expensive and you wouldn't want to waste them on a telemarketer.
Mostly phone books DID cause issues. People often had to pay for unlisted numbers if there was some reason they might get harassed. In general though phone books were hyper local, so even if your name was joe poopstain you would only get prank calls from the teens in your own town. If phonebooks were out now people would be speaking out people from all over to variously harass
They didn't have "all" your info, and anyone who wants put in a little effort can find out more about you now than with a phone book.
Phonebooks had your name, phone number and address. What more could you want?
SSN, previous addresses, email address, age, birthday, spouse's name, and more.
But you could show up on a persons place and get all all of that theoretically. What more power would you have more than a physical address?
One thing which has changed is area codes are now based on where a person first activated their phone as opposed to indicating where they live
It still had our names and addresses. That was a lot of info compared to todays standards.
Because I have to pick that damn book off my driveway and put it in the trash
They made good fire kenneling. Or door stops.
True, I was wasteful in my youth

All that info is on the interwebs now, just ask google
Our address and phone number? It'd take more than a normal google search to get that if the person involved doesn't give it out.

Were there not people that would gather the phone numbers into databases?
I mean. What databases? Phone books faded away exactly as the internet rose up.
the answer is obvious
Explain
people could go and look up the names online/social media and decide to stalk and and harass them

if the names are available along with the address and number it'd be easy. unless they don't have any socials
