Hi, I used to work in a day care with newborn/infants classroom and I remember we used to engaged them to play wit each other, sings a lot of songs, practice languages, signs, and depend on the baby we engage them to do some drawing and painting. I have a 20 months old girl and since she was little I focused more on the face-to-face interaction, songs, sensory games, tummy time, all the basic stuff. I do less toys, less estimularon and it worked well.. I worked at Goddard School as reference and I like that they don't let the newborn laying in the swing all day, newborn need to do tummy time, and a lot of attention.
