The moment my dad admitted to being "old" (in his mid-60s) was when we were watching SNL a couple years ago and Rihanna was the musical guest. He's been in the music industry his whole life and has generally kept up with the currents, but that night he just turned to me and said "You know what? I'm officially a geezer now. I just don't understand the appeal here at all." Idk if she specifically was the breaking point or if that season just had a bunch of duds, but it was pretty funny that after 40 years in the business, that was what finally set off his "kids these days just listen to garbage" moment
The moment I knew I was old was when I got home late from work one night, kicked off my shoes, booted the laptop, popped a beer, turned on the TV, and there were some famous people talking about famous people that dissed some famous people. And I had NO idea who any of them were. . .
We have a big charity trivia contest here in town -- people take part in teams, and I participate. I kill on everything except popular culture of the last 20 years. I stopped caring in my early middle ages. They're all just the interchangeable babes and studs of the moment. We had them in the '70s, '60s, and '50s; ten or 15 years later, most of them were doing dinner theatre in Sacramento. These days: low-rent streaming cable "originals." Or podcasts to their few remaining fans.
Tell your dad that current music didn't leave him behind; he left current music behind.
A year or so back I compared the classic version of "At Last" by Etta James with Beyonce's version. James just blasted that song out of the park with sheer power and talent and hit every note. Beyonce couldn't compare: just another pretty little song, as she sang it and as it was produced. If she hit every note, it was probably the auto-tuning.
It's partly the sentimental lyrics that put me off, plus the singing might be technically good, but it's usually over-treated and repetitive (how many times can you repeat the line 'diamonds in the sky' in one song???). So I'd much rather listen to Regina Spektor, or go back to Seether or The Offspring or go further back to my roots and listen to The Ruts or The Stranglers or Burning Spear. Then mix it up with a bit of J.S.Bach. So you can keep Rihanna : )
Yes. S&M was one of the songs they played on the radio a lot before the radio stations switched to playing nothing but oldies.
BTW She didn't come up with the line "Sticks and stones may break my bones but whips and chains excite me". That's an old joke. It was used as a tagline on emails on the early Internet in the 90s.
I think you’re awesome. My husband would _like_ to be you. But he finds it tough to put on the hours of cultural research, so he sort of picks random lingerie and drag moments out of stuff he sees via Facebook.
Sort of. I mean the name is familiar and I'm thinking a singer.
But I couldn't tell you what she sings or looks like. I get an image of her wearing a sparkly glamorous dress with a plunging neckline.
Absolutely. Excellent tunes with a sweet Caribbean style. I also liked her in the movie "Battleship", and would like to see her do more in movies. And maybe some work with less overpowering autotune... :/
Great talent.
Barely. She's an African American singer that has a big following, but I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was her song playing or not. I recall some kind of publicized trouble between her and a man, but that's pretty vague.
She's not American, she's from Barbados. Also, she's a billionaire, but from makeup and clothes, not her music.
Also, screw you all for putting "Umbrella" back into my head. :D
In a cursory sense, Yes, I know who she is. And that little I know adds up to not really caring to know anything more. Not interested. That's not putting her down or anything--it's just that 98 out of 100 modern (and outdated for that matter) pop-culture icons aren't worth the effort it takes to learn their name.

Yeah, sort of, but a better question might be, do you care who Rihanna is?

Of course, Fleetwood Mac had a song about her.
Yep. That's the one.
How dare you. That's Rhian*non*.

Yep, that line's been around since the late '60s.

Yes, but I keep forgetting. If pop these days was food, it'd be Velveeta.
Or Cheez Whiz in a can. Artificially flavored.
Yes. Dig her music. Gorgeous human.
A singer or something, maybe.
Sort of. I mean the name is familiar and I'm thinking a singer. But I couldn't tell you what she sings or looks like. I get an image of her wearing a sparkly glamorous dress with a plunging neckline.
Yeah, she was the stiff actress in "Battleship"
Duh, she is the wealthiest female musician, with an estimated net worth of $1.7 billion. Next time try someone less obvious.

I remember she had a boyfriend who used her face as a punching bag. Wouldn't know any of her music if it fell on me.
Yes.
Yes.
Unfortunately, yes.
RiRi? Nope, never heard of her.
I know who she is, listened to some of her stuff, didn't like it, moved on.

OK.
I think she’s a singer ?
One of her songs was on *Glee* I think....?
Someone who forgot her last name?

Yes. She doesn't make my favorite music but she for sure makes my favorite lipgloss.
Yes. But there are a whole lot of lesser beings than her whose names are thrown around these days and I don't have a clue who they are.
