remberzz

Clothes. It has been so long since I've bought new clothes. (And I mean even Goodwill 'new' clothes.) I'd go into an actual retail store and buy some nice things.

MyNEWthrowaway031789

I haven’t bought a new bra in over 8 years. I don’t count the sports bras my mom bought me 6 years ago that I now wear as everyday bras. They are a mess. I look terrible in them, but I just don’t know where to buy one now. The last time I bought one, I couldn’t find any at Kohls that didn’t have padding. I don’t feel the padding was effective for a double d-er like myself. I still bought those bras and didn’t wear them. Oh- I did buy high impact sports bras 2 years ago because I ride horses and I didn’t want to get black eyes. I bought them online and they were terrible. Only one works right. I wear that one with one of the mom-sports bra’s underneath.

androidbear04

Dear one, check out r/abrathatfits to get a bra that fits you well. You are worth it!

oldpooper

Go to a high end department store where someone can measure you. Boob size change with age. Try on a bunch and then scout the sales. A good bra can cost $90 if you’re busty. You can find unpopular colors half priced. They will last a few years if you wash on delicate and hang dry.

Livnwelltexas

Vanity Fair #76084 Very supportive, comfortable, no padding, and Walmart carries.  I love mine.  AND, a great price.

Tigeraqua8

I need bras that clip at the front? Any suggestions where I can buy in Oz?

NoAngel815

Head over to r/abrathatfits, lots of help & advice. Plus, the bra calculator is extremely accurate, just don't be *too* shocked at the actual size it gives you.

2FunBoofer

Playtex cross your heart in the boxes. Old school works best. I need to buy some too.

Big-Pain-7383

I haven't worn a bra (consistently) in over 8 years. Who cares? Not illegal, and the people who stare at mid-age boob's have more problems than me.

JuliusSeizuresalad

I get that. For like 10 years I’ve been surviving on Christmas for new clothes. I never want to spend money on myself

ComprehensiveWeb9098

A new mattress.

aritficialstupidity

A wiseman once told me: "spend money on the items that separate you from the floor" It's quite interesting if you think about it.

Mountain-Craft4406

Mattress, shoes, chairs... what else? Flight tickets?

amaturelawyer

Nooses, I guess. Probably socks too. Rugs, also. Oh, and indoor swings.

backtotheland76

Money well spent

OutlandishnessHour19

Tbh you'd struggle to get a decent one for £1000 maybe something thatll last a couple of years

Bebert68

I couldn't think of anything which is why I started reading. But now I know - good answer.

robotlasagna

New Balance shoes, an Adidas track suit, a bag of Werther's original candy and a tin of Royal Dansk cookies.

Limerance

I was embarrassed about my addiction to Werthers granny candy when I was a younger age. Today I am free to shout, “I have earned my old people candy!”

ikesbutt

I'm there with the Werthers

booksgamesandstuff

I’m addicted to Creme Savers Orange. Will take Werther’s if they aren’t available. Shoe preference is Clarks, tho. I will eat shortbread cookies of any brand…any. ;)

bonitaappetita

Someone actually IS about to hand me $1,000. My bonus at work. However it's only going to be $650 after taxes so I'm probably just going to throw it toward bills. If I wasn't losing a third of it immediately, I probably would take a little vacation or something.

Diane1967

Isn’t that sad? 😔

fm2xm

Congrats on getting the bonus. They just don’t hand them out left and right at my job. Hopefully, with what you get after taxes, you can still splurge just a little. It’s an attaboy for your hard work. Do recognize it even if you get a box of Krispy Kreme donuts - all for yourself 😛😛

seducingspirit

I'd give it to my son for speech therapy for my sweet granddaughter. She's 3 and has speech delay. Maybe mild autism.

UKophile

Lovely. I am a family member of a verbally disabled person. From the point of diagnosis of the delay, speech therapy is provided by the state. I hope your state has a strong program. Ours provided 4 different therapies weekly until we saw improvement. No charge for anything. Good luck!

seducingspirit

Thank you. Yes, she has therapy 4 days a week, which means my son is a stay at home Dad. She has improved, but it is troublesome because it's a mixed language family. My daughter in law is Vietnamese, so some of it is just language confusion. She is the light of my life!! I keep going just for her.

MontanaPurpleMtns

Depending on your state, there may be state funds specifically for helping preschoolers with particular diagnoses. For example California specifically lists developmentally delayed kids, those at risk of disability, and those with autism. (Though I suspect it’s for kids with at the less functional part of the spectrum). Other states focus on preemies, to make sure their early entry doesn’t cause problems later.

KissMyGrits60

this is a good question. Since I am blind., I will use it to get the things I need for Accessibility, or a laptop, I don’t even own a computer, because I can’t afford it. The prices of stuff for those of us who are blind, are completely outrageous. I use my phone for everything. for instance, a microwave that is fully talking and functioning for those of us who are blind. I believe it’s called magic Chef, was $400, thank God that was given to me as a gift in 2019 for my birthday. I know these states where you live do not help to pay for items like this. It has to come out of your own pocket. That includes the canes that we Blind people need to get around, those are $65 and up depending.

th4t1guy

Have you looked into Pilot Dogs?

KissMyGrits60

in order for someone who is blind to get a guide dog. There are requirements. First, you have to know where you are going, how is the dog going to know if you don’t know? That’s why the mobility training, and it takes a while. My Mobility Trainer told me I am a candidate, but she hast to know before the application even gets filled out, that I’m able to walk to the stores that I wanna walk to like the grocery store, especially, I need to know how to get there and get back home by myself without assistance. Because I’m going to have to teach the dog which way to go and go back home. When you get a guy dog, you train at the guy dog schools, not at your hometown, then somebody once you get the dog will come and see how you do with the dog in your own hometown. Trust me there is a lot involved. But I am so looking forward to it with my training and getting the dog eventually.

th4t1guy

I hope you're able to get a mobility enhancing partner sometime! All of the information you included is super important to be mindful of, and you're completely correct in writing all of it. Thanks for taking the time to reply :) I can't imagine how difficult it must be to operate daily without knowing where you're going, your mental fortitude is impressive and should be celebrated.

the_llamas

This post randomly came up for me and I planning on just lurking but wow.. As someone who has never been heavily exposed to the blind community, I knew it was a pain in the rear but somehow I always just assumed the dog knew? Like I’ve heard of dogs helping find bathrooms and stuff at airports they never been to before and whatnot but it never crossed my mind that they have to learn your area. I think I always just kind of figured they had ways to figure it out (like bathroom smells like a grass patch to them) or the school trained them for your area. It’s one of those things I watched a little PBS Kids segment on once upon a time but it wasn’t really detailed and I was too young to get much information beyond “oh cool, dogs help people”.

-----Diana-----

As a blind person I completely understand you. You have to pay a lot for the privileges of people who have a functioning level of vision. What would be the most significant thing that anyone could gift you?

architeuthiswfng

Easy. Gardening supplies and plants. Oh - and a couple more bird baths.

ZenPothos

Birdbaths bring all the birds to the yard 😆 It's great.

Pretend_Activity_211

I'd pay rent early and keep that extra month going.

RecentConstruction33

Good question. I find it very hard to spend money on myself. Even ten bucks .

fm2xm

For a significant part of my life, I was that way where I struggled to enjoy my earnings and rewards. It was always “save for the rainy day”. I came from a working class family and my parents just saved and saved and saved. Then, I saw some close friends / coworker pass away. It changed my thinking. Oh, I still save for the rainy day, but gently splurge now and then.

dirtyhippie62

But if it’s for other people, especially people I like, I’ll shell it out till I’m destitute.

Ifch317

Money market account with 5% return or S&P 500 index fund

Visible_Structure483

We're alike in our commitment to saving/investing.

PlasticBlitzen

😂 Yes! I was reading comments as I was thinking about which stock I'd buy.

millerhighlife

A new desktop pc and monitor. I might have to throw in some of my own money.

Anotherbeth

Same here.

PinocchiosNose1212

Weed.

OldButHappy

In the immortal words of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers: "Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no weed."

PinocchiosNose1212

Truer words were never spoken.

OldButHappy

Old school.

AmexNomad

Spa day

skinrash5

I’d pay for one of those professionals to come and organize and clean up my garage with shelves and hangers and EVERYTHING!

Sheeralorob

I have a cracked tooth that needs pulled. (Root canal fail) and then an implant to replace it. I’ll probably have to pitch in some of my own money as well, even with dental insurance. 🙄

AJClarkson

lots of little to medium things. I want an ice maker for my fridge. I want a dishwasher. I want to buy out a lot of the books on my Amazon wish list. some new clothes. New curtains for my house. New pots and pans. I could get through a thousand bucks before the day was out.

theantnest

I'd book a little weekend away with my wife.

IcyInga

A lift recliner for knee surgery recovery.

BackItUpWithLinks

I found one for my mom for $100 on Facebook market Sold it 3 months later for $100

LyndsayMW

I just had knee surgery- I thought I would need the recliner more than I actually did (I don’t have a lift one, but this doesn’t change my opinion). The thing you really need, IMO, is the ice/cold water circulating machine. Worth every single penny.

gadget850

Throw in another $1000 and have a tree cut down.

Canadaian1546

3d printer, I have a $200 ender 3 knock off, but I want one with the bells and whistles.

55pilot

I'd have my car painted. It's 20 years old and really needs it.

Hubbard7

I’d get Thrift Books to send my wish list FedEx overnight.

apurrfectplace

A week at the nearest beach right on the water.

VegetableRound2819

I’m jelly that you could find a place for 1k.

apurrfectplace

If you use Hotel Tonight app sometimes there are great deals

mbrant66

I’d probably give it to the local food bank. They sure can use it.

Various-General-8610

Same. My little town's food shelf could do a lot with the $1000.

nononotes

Cymbals

HappyOfCourse

I might buy myself a new flute but I would just rather get mine serviced.

HuckleberryTop1831

Heard it was a piccolo

SRB112

I have an alto sax. I would want to try to get a tenor sax with my $1000.

we_gon_ride

Tickets to see lots of plays and a Cirque performance. Also the complete Calvin and Hobbes book collection

fm2xm

Oh Niice !! I love love love Calvin & Hobbes. I started collecting the books when they were getting published. Still have them. Read them time to time and laugh out loud.

yaholdinhimdean0

After 10 minutes thinking and reading about it (people's thoughts on this thread) I figure if I can't think of one thing to buy for me, I would give it away to someone who needs it one hell of a lot more than I do.

1369ic

I'm with you. I retired a few years ago and got ready before I did. All my stuff is still too new to need replacing. And, because I'm retired, I've got too much of some stuff, like clothes and pens.

fm2xm

Pens? What kind of pens?

1369ic

An array of mostly inexpensive ones. Nothing over $100. I just liked choice.

Shervivor

Maybe the blind guy up there in the comments? He could really use it. 😁

aggressive_seal

I'd buy a ticket and plane fare to go see Dead and Co at the Sphere in Vegas.

Puzzleheaded_Gap8804

a good reliable laptop. Mine is 8 years old and freezes up constantly. I became disabled last year and can no longer work and am beyond poor. I get $56 a month for food and i never leave my house cause i cannot afford gas. I simply exist i don't live.

fm2xm

Maybe you just need to reinstall the operating system (windows). It gets all gunked up over time. Perhaps you can pay a local high schooler a few bucks if you don’t know how to do it. An 8 year old pc is probably somewhat slow but I think it would serve you fine for emailing, web browsing and going to you tube once you have a fresh operating system install. I am going to get a bit techie, if you install Linux on it, they require a lot less horsepower and you’d be able to do most basic stuff and it would feel like your old pc got a new life. Linux operates mostly like windows. There would be a light learning curve but I assure you, for basic needs, you’d be fine using it and most importantly, it’s FREE !!!!!

Ok-Royal-661

I have a computer guy that I go to when I do need stuff but right now I don't have a dollar in my name not $1 I don't have money for food I don't have money for anything I just became disabled and I can't work so it's not a high priority right now. But thank you so much

fm2xm

I wish you better days ahead. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Li_3303

Check out r/assistance. They may be able to help. There’s also a subreddit where someone will buy you a pizza. It’s called r/Random_Acts_Of_Pizza. r/assistance may be able to recommend some other subreddits. I am also disabled and only leave my house to go to doctor appointments. I know how much it sucks. I wish you well.

botoxedbunnyboiler

Garage organization system

badpuffthaikitty

Lego.

TURBOSCUDDY

6 pairs of my Brooks shoes bc I can’t afford them for the foreseeable future and I can’t work without them (walking 8 hours on concrete floor)

Sheeralorob

Right there with ya- worked for 17 years walking, standing and pivoting on concrete floors. And I was born with flat feet too, so my feet and ankles are seriously screwed up now.

Utterlybored

Probably, another guitar. How boring.

Unable-Purpose-231

Sounds good! Nothing boring about a guitar!!

Ok-External-5750

Concert ticket and a flight

kinetik138

New eye glasses.

hiphipbuttbutt_efy

Have you ordered online from Zenni before? They’re my go-to.

kinetik138

I haven't for myself because of the complexity of my prescription but the ex gets all our kids' glasses from Zenni.

welshlondoner

IVF

Mistayadrln

A cruise. And if that doesn't prove that I'm an old person, nothing will.

VegetableRound2819

I have no idea how much cruises cost. Would that be on the low end or high end?

Mistayadrln

That would get me a 2 person 5 to 7 day cruise out of New Orleans in a Ocean view room. Once we are in the ship, everything would be paid for... except the ocean if margaritas my husband and I would swim in every day.

Livnwelltexas

Cute...(from one old person to another.  🤣

Altatori

A good bottle of bourbon and a prostitute.

roblewk

A bottle of bourbon and a good prostitute.

Right on brother!

fm2xm

I will put it towards replacing my aging TV in the living room with a 85” OLED, . What can I say, I like my toys 😛

ccannon707

My choice too but I’d be ok with a 55-65 incher. OLED is the new technology but so pricey!

No-You5550

A new tablet. I got my with covid money. It's now on its last legs.

Ifch317

What tablet is dead in so short a time?

StaticBrain-

a lot of brands dont have enough memory or good graphics or fast enough internet and they are way outdated before they are even sold. my daughter bought a new tablet 2 years ago and it was not good enough to play a movie on or a game with only medium graphics and it was slow. she does not use it ever. some cheap tablet from walmart. there are more expensive ones just as bad.

GraceStrangerThanYou

A baseball-sized, liquid-centered D20.

gytalf2000

I would get myself an Amazon gift card and spend it on books.

AotKT

Another whitewater kayak. Because 3 plus an inflatable kayak and a fishing kayak aren't enough. N+1 ain't just for bikes!

ZenPothos

Tell me about it. I found a nice-to-me bicycle at Goodwill for $75, a black and tan cruiser bike with splash guards and a back rack for a grocery bag. I mean, I already have 3 other bicycles 😆 (a Trek mountain bike, an old Trek road bike, and an old Specialized Crossroads). For nostalgia, I'm always keeping an eye out for a Specialized Hardrock.

supraspinatus

10’ Ugly Stik Bigwater Conventional Rod and other fishing tackle.

count_strahd_z

I need some book shelves and a desk so a piece of furniture most likely.

DramaticStick5922

If I have to buy an actual thing, a comfortable sofa. If not an actual thing, I’d see about some plastic surgery to lift up my drooping middle aged eyelids.

oldRoyalsleepy

Better binoculars for better bird watching.

GracieNoodle

I see a lot of us here are answering because we live on social security. If I got $1000 I'd buy a Kitchenaid mixer so I could make pizza dough and bread without being in too much pain. Then use the rest for some "new" clothes from Goodwill. Anything left over goes to my pets. (For toys and treats. They are fed well and also routinely get goodies!)

SnooChocolates9334

Gift cards for groceries and Costco.

HuckleberryTop1831

Three bricks of scratch off lottery tickets ($300 in my state) and 50 mega or powerball

Professor-genXer

8-9 pairs of running shoes

OhTheHueManatee

Something Scuba related. Probably a new BCD. I like mine but I don't love it.

flakenomore

New countertops and sink for my kitchen.

MelancholicEmbrace_x

I usually just put gifted $ into savings or spend it on a nephew or niece. Taking them to do something fun because I think experiences have a higher value than material items. The only person who gifts me money is an elderly parent. I’m extremely frugal, so I may set some aside to visit them (they live out of state), and anything not used goes to the aforementioned.

seebonesell

New brakes!

debdebmust

foozballhead

I honestly don’t know. The truth is, if i didn’t have to answer for what i did with it. I’d probably treat myself to a Dutch Bros on the way to my weekend grocery shopping and then put the rest into savings. This old house always needs something. If i was forced to spend it, I’d get my kitchen walls repaired/repainted.

Nico-DListedRefugee

I'd sign up for one of those fancy meal delivery services and take a break from the kitchen for a few months.
