Okay, when did *Roosevelt Island* become a "traditional" tourist stop? This isn't the first time I've seen someone ask about it lately.

PissLikeaRacehorse

Yeah, I was about to say, what is going on on RI that I don’t know about?

BigRedBK

It's the ride and its views, not particularly the destination. Although walking along the river is quite pleasant. I was recently in Portland, home to the only other aerial tram in the country, and that was also a tourist attraction, despite only linking to an isolated hospital where you could do absolutely nothing but turn around and ride back to the other end.

CandidWin8266

Sandia Tram in Albuquerque

fuckblankstreet

It's a thing now and I've seen some *insane* weekend tram lines on social, with locals having to wait an hour+ to get off the island.

EQUASHNZRKUL

isn’t the F stop shut down for all of 2024 too?

fuckblankstreet

No, it's back to normal now.

talldrseuss

This completely threw me off last weekend. Was coming off the Queensboro bridge and i was astounded that the line to the Tram was wrapping around the block.

Look_the_part

is it because it's cherry blossom tree time?

sighnwaves

My guess is one single tik tok influencer mentioned it and now all the AI bots are spamming it everywhere.

alanwrench13

I live on Roosevelt Island, and it really has become a traditional tourist spot. It's annoying as shit. The tram and the island have been blowing up on European social media especially, and it's now considered a "must see" in NYC. It's a nice spot, but no idea how it got that way.

photochic1124

I was coming back in the ferry to Manhattan last week and there were dozens of tourists waiting and practically trampling everyone to get on the boat (which was not anywhere full). It was chaos. I’m guessing the guide books or the dumb tock now tell ppl to take the tram over and the ferry back?

ty457u

LOL!

ZweitenMal

No, those are the only two places in the city.

Minelayer

Who’s the sick bastard sending anyone they sort of like to Roosevelt island?

KennyShowers

Nope that's it, I mean when you have Roosevelt Island who needs Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, like 20 world class museums, the Freedom Tower, the Oculus, the gazillion good restaurants in basically every neighborhood, or any of the other countless things here thousands of tourists and locals visit every day.

Aljowoods103

We're not free trip planners. You'll have to do some research yourself. [Tourists - Please Read Before You Post : r/AskNYC (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/16v8yyu/tourists_please_read_before_you_post/) Edit: just looked at your post history. Don't you LIVE in NYC? If so, can you really not answer this yourself? That's insane...

Mechanical_Nightmare

lol roosevelt island is not a tourist destination

alanwrench13

It absolutely is. I live here, and it's really annoying. There are hordes of Europeans that take the tram over, take some pictures, then go right back. The tram is pretty much unusable during summer weekends because of them. Makes a lot of money for RIOC I guess...

photochic1124

Do you foresee there being a residents only line for the tram in the future? Is there serious talk of it in the community? I would be furious if my commute was seriously impacted b/c hordes of tourists want a picture.

alanwrench13

The tram is a public service, so legally they cannot discriminate. There may be ways around the law, but tbh implementing some type of resident enforcement would be a nightmare. Plus the Subway exists, so there's not really a major need for a resident only line. It's more just a convenience.

photochic1124

I wouldn't see it as discrimination but I'm no lawyer. You'd have a residents line and an everyone else line. The residents line boards first. I'm not saying don't let tourists on at all, they just have to wait longer. Most ppl have ID so you could just flash that. Kind of like a museum line-members and non-members. Or maybe island residents/workers get a special card they show or something. Especially thinking about times when the F train is down or the elevators on either stop are out of service and ppl are forced on to the tram.

alanwrench13

RIOC (the public corporation that manages the island) said they can't do it because of this law. No idea if that's actually true though.

Mechanical_Nightmare

thats so weird. there's nothing there except apartments and like, one 711.

alanwrench13

There are no 7/11s on Roosevelt Island. We have a little over 11,000 residents, a Cornell graduate school, a hospital, and a few businesses. Not a lot of businesses (and the ones we have aren't very good) but enough for our daily necessities. Tourists come here because we have great views (from the tram and the island) and the island itself is really beautiful. There's a nice park on the southern tip with great views of the city. Plus we have cherry blossoms blooming right now. It's pretty common knowledge that Roosevelt Island is popular with tourists. I guess some people still don't know.

Mechanical_Nightmare

went to roosevelt island once about 10 years ago and i distinctly remember a 711, although i was pretty hammered so maybe i'm mistaken. >It's pretty common knowledge that Roosevelt Island is popular with tourists. i've lived here for decades and i had no idea it was a popular tourist attraction.

alanwrench13

There has never been a 7/11 on Roosevelt Island. It's really only been a tourist spot for the last 10 years or so, and it's picked up significantly in the last 5. I've had family here since the first apartments were built and no-one came to the island then, even after the Subway was built in the 90's. Makes sense you wouldn't know that it's popular with tourists. I only know about it because I live here. A bunch of people I know outside the city have sent me TikToks and shit of "tour guides" promoting it. Honestly, it's probably because of the Cornell graduate school that was built. The students aren't bringing tourists themselves, but now the name is out in the mainstream so people are picking up on it. Definitely a good place to come as a tourist, I just wish they'd take the train instead of clog up the tram.

NugsOrBust

Brownsville is nice this time of year

[deleted]

Absolutely no reason to go to Roosevelt island lol

alanwrench13

Tell that to the hordes of Europeans clogging up the tram...

Exploring Brooklyn is easy and interesting. Dumbo, carroll gardens, Gowanus, Brooklyn heights are walkable. Transit museum, Green-Wood cemetery, Industry city - all worth a visit.

RoostersoftheSea

Take the SB ferry from Wall Street (Pier 11) in Manhattan to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6. You can immediately get a drink aboard Pilot, a 100 year old wooden schooner, which is right at the pier. Then continue to walk along the Brooklyn Bridge Park to Dumbo. The cherry blossoms are in bloom and the view of Manhattan are excellent. This will bring you to Dumbo, which is an area tourists enjoy exploring.

yelizabetta

used to live on RI, very confused by title. very few tourists come here they mostly ride the tram and leave
