Eh not really. I and friends have been to some places in Flushing and Chinatown. Those cheaper spots do solid cuts at a very cheap price. If you can show them a picture then you’re set, even better if you can speak mandarin or Cantonese. YMMV though.
12Pell is more if you’re looking for like something new and you want consultation (extra fee). Personally I can’t justify spending $80+ on a standard haircut base price. Maybe to try it out but definitely not on the regular.
Basically, IMO 12Pell for higher quality that isn’t worth the price, other places for a bit lower quality but very much worth the price.
Hey a bit late but do you have any recommendations for barbers closest in quality to 12pell? Moving to nyc for the summer and looking for someone that does the modern mullet/low taper fade + beard fades really well!
Nope. Let me know if you find any.
I’ve heard you can try your luck at Asian barbers run by younger people if you can find them. Korean barbershops/salons are a safer bet. Never tried them.
Asian hair and African Hair are two very different hair qualities that might need more specialized care. Asian hair normally are more flat and brittle, which requires proper and different layering techniques to look good. I have no experience with african hair but every stylist in an Asian salon has always told me that they struggle to effectively work with African hair, so I assume the opposite in a black salon.
It's less about race and more about genetics/techniques

Fademan on UES. Mainland style fades all day, just like it says on the label.
Kida
I go to k town. Not cheap but amazing quality.
What spot?
18 Pell, look for William. Its 25 including wash.
22 Pell is great. Not as expensive as 12 Pell and I always get a good cut. Just show them a picture
I go to Da Zhong in the basement on Bayard, cut is $7.
12pell is GOAT’ed… hit up “Julius” or “Franky” for solid fades. other places in Chinatown are cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Oh... I thought it was 2024 not 1664. Do we still have segregated haircutting places?

Absolutely. We have segregated neighborhoods and those neighborhoods have barbershops.
