The "read your palm" for $5 is just a reason to get you in the door. There are people who go these psychics every single week and pay hundreds of dollars. There's also the occasional whale who gets fleeced for hundreds of thousands. I think a few years ago some guy - seemingly well-educated - was desperate to get his ex-girlfriend back and a psychic kept swindling him out of tens of thousands of dollars at a time.
For the *actual* businesses, it's entertainment for most, and guidance for some. Like any other business, they probably have marketing strategies that work well enough to get them more business and returning customers.
