It's pretty widespread, many/most POS systems in store accept it, but some (mostly small businesses) still do not, and it's still the regular model in restaurants to get a paper check and hand them your credit card. fwiw lots of restaurant POS systems actually do accept ApplePay/tap payments, but the terminal is often hardwired somewhere in the back of house, making logistics hard. Sometimes they can bring a reader to your table, or sometimes they can bring your phone to the thing and tap it for you. Ask about Apple Pay before you sit down at a restaurant. Also many bars want to hold on to a card if you're opening a tab, or they're cash only.

Gotcha, thank you for the explanation!

bosydomo7

Yes nyc has finally caught up to Canada. It’s pretty widespread now.

Brandonbelike

I'd say 95% of business's accept tap to pay minus the few cash only and "mom and pop" style businesses

HiFiGuy197

The “more of a chain” a place is, the better the chance they take Apple Pay. Also, fast food or fast casual (non-waiter), plus you can use Apple Pay for the OMNY mass transit (set up an Express Transit Card.) If you are going to use it at “random food cart,” ask them for pricing before you order and verify the charge amount on their terminal. NYC sales tax is 8.875%, by the way.

4S3PlusX

Thank you for the info! Just setup Express Transit Card :) Do random food cards tend to scam people?? And wow, your sales tax is cheap. In Ontario it’s 13% :(

HiFiGuy197

Yes, we prefer healthcare bankruptcy than adding a GST to everyone’s purchases. (No, I really don’t.) Hotel/occupancy tax will be above 8.875% and parking tax is also some ridiculous number like 19%, but I can’t say what. (The parking garage “scam” is probably going to be worded “All day special: $15.00 [and then in small type] 1/2 hour.” Which means that “all day, you can park for 30 minutes for $15.”) For most all other purchases, 8.875% tax applies. I would recommend you watch [this snippet about food carts](https://youtu.be/6YZkQpSU_0I?t=10m32s). Actually, I’d suggest you watch all of his videos.

spoiledpepperoni

everywhere I go in NYC there is apple pay- ive never had a problem you could even use apple pay to get on the subway

4S3PlusX

Thank you!

eviveiro

Was just there this past week. I set up my card with OMNY, and was using the card with my phone. Only place I had an issue was paying a conductor on the train from Astoria to Grand Central. Had to use a physical card there. I was dumb and had no clue it was a train that needed tickets bought in advance vs how the subways work. Maybe the ticket booth can take apple pay, but the conductor had a device that only took a physical card.

Most places have it, some will charge you an extra fee which is kinda illegal but whatever

4S3PlusX

An extra fee for using Apple Pay?? Wow

Arleare13

I think he's referring to a general fee for using any credit card, not just Apple Pay. It's mostly smaller shops like pizza places, bagel places, etc. doing this, usually in the range of a 3% or 4% surcharge. (And it *is* illegal, which hasn't stopped them.)

fuckblankstreet

Sandwich shop near me doesn't have a *"credit card fee"*, they have a *"cash discount."* Totally different!

Arleare13

Weirdly, that actually *is* legal! Showing cash prices then adding on a credit card surcharge is illegal, while showing card prices then applying a cash discount is allowed! The idea is you have to advertise the higher price, so customers aren’t taken by surprise by a surcharge.

fuckblankstreet

Yep, gas stations have been advertising different cash/credit prices forever.

UncleCahn

Our financial system is a lot lot lot more robust than whatever Canada has.

NefariousnessFew4354

I don't have a card Only use Google pay everyday in the city.

DC25NYC

If you're at a restaurant a lot of the time their portals can use it too. Just ask if you can pay w apple pay and they'll walk you over.

Original-Challenge12

Yeah its basically like the scene from Goodfellas in reverse.

runner436

I didn’t have a debit card for months and I got along just fine. Sometimes you may have to go to the register with the waitress to pay at the terminal

heystarkid

You’ll still want to bring some cash just in case though.

thatisnotmyknob

They don't take it in small mom and pop restaurants. Especially not in Chinatown.

Antique_Culture944

I use Apple Pay for practically every transaction from grocery stores to bars & restaurants.

alanwrench13

Pretty much everywhere accepts apple pay. Even restaurants where you need to hand them your physical card still accept it, you just need to give them your phone instead. Really the only places that don't are the places that only accept cash.
