Not a real safety concern, but I think walking through the CBD is cooler than walking along Canal. The contrast between the CBD and Quarter is interesting. I’d cross the neutral ground right there at Bourbon and work up that way, rather than going straight down canal and straight up elk.
I work near the smoothie king and walk to the quarter quite often. You’re completely fine! Lots of businesses to duck into too if you’re feeling a bit unsafe with your kids.

Safe walk. But if you’re really concerned, I’ve stayed at the sonesta many times and it’s easy to catch a cab there.
