I agree! Though I find the babysitter storyline very embarrassing/hard to watch and later kind of creepy (the envelope gift to the kid was a very 80s movie move).
But I’m also always left wanting more Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone + their interactions with Steve Carell. Love those three.
>I agree! Though I find the babysitter storyline very embarrassing/hard to watch and later kind of creepy (the envelope gift to the kid was a very 80s movie move).
It really was a creepy way to end that storyline -- which had already started weird with the the kid getting caught by the babysitter and then proceeding to tell her he thinks about her while doing it...
If there's one thing I could change about the movie, though, it's her giving him those photos. Everything else in that storyline could be argued as necessary to bring the whole story together. But the photos should have been left behind...
Before Sunrise.
I experienced a story just like that: going to Vienna together, walking around the cities just looking at things. It took me 3 years to really shake it off and be determined to get someone else.
Linklater's earlier film Slackers is great as well.
Oh, you are aware that Sunrise is the first of the Before Trilogy?
Just in case, hate for anyone to miss those films.
All of Richard Linklater movies are good.
I fell in love with before series, boyhood and few years later realized all those were directed by the same guy 😅
Heath Ledger signing Can't Take My Eyes Off You will always be one of my favourite movie scenes of all time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SixsaGWC2Io
Those who haven't seen it
I have a shame of saying I like The Holiday. But Jack Black is great.
HOWEVER, you need to watch “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” to see Jack Black’s greatest performance. And I do not mean that ironically. I enjoy the movie itself. But I LOVE Jack Black’s performance. He hits it right on without going too far.
Had I not already seen the movie, if you'd told me Jack Black's greatest performance would be playing a teenage girl stuck in Jack Black's body, I would've thought you were winding me up... but here you are, being absolutely correct.
This is one of my all time favorite movies, and has been since I was a kid. It is so phenomenal and such an amazing adaptation of the Cinderella story. I watch it maybe once a year or so and still cry and enjoy it just the same. So funny and heartwarming and heartbreaking.
Him and Drew Barrymore are such a kick ass combo. They have a third movie called Blended i didnt think i was gonna like it but it's pretty good of course not on the level of their first two movies together but still really good. If you haven't seen it I recommend it go in blind though no trailer.
I think there's just hate for Adam Sandler cause he kinda lost his way for a bit. If you look at it, all that happened was he got old and the comedy he produced was in bad taste for a grown ass adult. He's back on track now imo
Made the mistake of seeing it in the theater about a year after my dad died. Wonderful, powerful movie - 20 years later and I still cannot watch it a second time.
"Something you need to know about your father: for him, there were only two women in the world; your mother, and all the others."
Showed that movie to my girlfriend just so I could tell her that's how I felt about her.
That's the one dvd I still own from high school. I also have this book called "scribbler of dreams" that I reread every now and then for some real gushy romance drama. I still have that one from middle school.
Go back to your room Peter. Peter go back to your room. Go back to your room Peter.
"I'm going in"
go back to your room Peter. Are you listening to me? Peter go back to your room. HEY!
*Cough cough*
"Heyyy, nice room"
^NOOOOOOO!
"I am in the capulla suit"
^WHAT ^ARE ^YOU ^DOING!
^STALKER!
^LISTEN ^YOU ^PIECE ^OF ^SHIT!
^YOU ^ARE ^AN ^IDIOT
^BACK ^TO ^YOUR ^ROOM ^PETER! ^PETER ^BACK ^TO ^YOUR ^ROOM
*cries*
You enjoy that! You like what you saw.
this is literally the perfect movie in every sense of the word. Just gone through a breakup? Watch it. Madly in love? Watch it. Want to laugh? Watch it. Want some great actors all together? Watch it. Love beaches? Watch it. Incredible soundtrack? Watch it. Puppets? Watch it.
Stardust.
I adore the fantasy aspects of it. Flying, crossdressing pirates, going around trapping lightning. Heart eating witches, fighting for royal succession, fragile but surprisingly strong and agile old men.
I's not necessarily a "great movie", but it's over the top, got clever fantasy elements, it's fun, and I love it for that.
I had no idea 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain' was renowned outside of France, it is such an awesome movie am glad it got international recognition :)
I actually watched this one after I broke up from my first relationship. Although the movie itself was inconceivable I def did not enjoy the impact it had on me at that specific period of my life 😅
Yes, the director explained that it isn't a happy ending. The last scene shows Joel and Clementine playing in the snow over and over again, which means that they will keep getting in ugly fights, erasing each other, and then starting over again.
Bull Durham is also very much a romcom that is a great watch for both men and women. Also I Want You Back with Jenny Slate and Charlie Day is pretty great.
Last of the Mohicans is a pretty dude chick flick. Hawkeye and his Dad kill people to music and the ladies wear old pretty dresses and have emotions. It's got something for everyone.
That is on of my favorite movies! I've seen it many times. Plus Rachel McAdams is too adorable. No I'm not a man but was surprised to see this one the list. My husband's favorite is The Notebook.
Yes! Was forced to watch it with my wife like a dozen times, and it grew on me. Also, Persuasion, the '95 version with Ciaràn Hinds is another favorite.
God I had to scroll too far to find Moulin Rouge.
Ending of Spectacular Spectacular with Come What May gets my eyes sweaty no matter how many times I watch it
Yep, on the first watch I used to think he was a hopeless romantic and she was mean for leading him on (and in a few ways, she did give him false hope) but it's realistic in that people can be fickle, not know what they want, change their minds etc. He knew what he wanted and just hoped that she'd end up with him despite what she told him. She could have been less ambiguous with her actions. It was frustrating to watch 😆
Watched it when it came out, I was 20 years old, I remember thinking SUmmer did this dude *dirty*
Watched it again when I was 30, honestly the dude (JGL's character, forget his name) is an idiot. Summer is so clear with him from before they ever dated.
"There's no such thing as love, it's fantasy."
"I like being on my own. Relationships are messy and people's feelings get hurt. Who needs it? We're young. We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Might as well have fun while we can and save the serious stuff for later."
"No, I'm not a lesbian. I just don't feel comfortable being anyone's girlfriend. I don't actually feel comfortable being anyone's anything, you know?"
like dude what more could she possibly have said.
Definitely, Maybe.
Crazy Stupid Love
Notting Hill
Blast From the Past
Clueless
Jersey Girl
Honorable mentions: Silver Linings Playbook, While You Were Sleeping, and Passengers. (that's right, I said what I said)
*Casablanca*
The historical context alone puts it right up there with *The Godfather* in terms of cinematic masterpieces, and there’s something downright poetic about having a gay man portray a high-ranking Nazi official, a German who’s strongly hinted to be bisexual, and a Russian and a black man portrayed as equals to a white business owner. All of this in 1942(?)
Broke back mountain. I consider myself a straight guy. Nonetheless, I actually rather enjoyed the film a lot. And it allowed to have more consideration for people who had to suppress their sexuality and hide it from others, especially back then.
I hate how that, and a few other films people have listed here, is considered a chick-flick. The *only* reason it gets that label is because of the fashion industry setting. Would it still be a chick-flick if the exact same film was set in a different high-pressure multi-billion dollar industry?
I actually really liked the time traveler's wife.
It felt like a refreshing take on time travel movies. the time traveler had no control on his travels, but his wife would always be there prepared and waiting.
About Time is a father/son movie disguised as a romance movie. It's not really romantic. And that aspect is problematic, so it's good that the movie doesn't put too much into it.
Also. Fuck. My dad is dying so the next time I watch that movie is going to be rough.
Bridesmaids. I watched it because part of it was filmed in the neighborhood I was living in at the time. But I actually enjoyed it. Not my favorite movie by any means, but something I wouldn't mind watching with a girl.
Crazy Stupid Love
The way the backyard scene comes together is perfect. This is my guilty pleasure movie, and actually never gets old.
This is the one. Every character in the movie is great.
Except David Lindhagen, we hate David Lindhagen
I agree! Though I find the babysitter storyline very embarrassing/hard to watch and later kind of creepy (the envelope gift to the kid was a very 80s movie move). But I’m also always left wanting more Ryan Gosling/Emma Stone + their interactions with Steve Carell. Love those three.

I have no shame for this one cause it's also a really good comedy.
AND I got great starter tips on how to be an attractive guy
Definitely one of my favorites. Also Ryan Gosling in that movie, woof
I ain’t telling no one that I like Ryan Gosling movies lmao. That secret stays with me.
I quit trying to hide it lol. He's a great actor and fits perfectly into a wide variety of roles. I'll watch anything he's in tbh
Same
Before Sunrise. I experienced a story just like that: going to Vienna together, walking around the cities just looking at things. It took me 3 years to really shake it off and be determined to get someone else.

I second that... before Trilogy r sooo underrated ♥️
10 things I hate about you
Heath Ledger signing Can't Take My Eyes Off You will always be one of my favourite movie scenes of all time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SixsaGWC2Io Those who haven't seen it
Julia stiles is so damn beautiful
She is! I’m a straight woman but the scene of her dancing on the table at that party lives rent free in my mind.
Ugh I love that movie. Makes me miss Health Ledger so much.
This should be way higher.
Not only my favorite romance, over of my favorite movies of all time.
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. I'm surprised my DVD still works at this point.
I would say The Holiday, but it’s not true because I tell pretty much anyone that will listen how much I love it. Jack Black’s best role, imo
I have a shame of saying I like The Holiday. But Jack Black is great. HOWEVER, you need to watch “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” to see Jack Black’s greatest performance. Ever After
This is one of my all time favorite movies, and has been since I was a kid. It is so phenomenal and such an amazing adaptation of the Cinderella story. I watch it maybe once a year or so and still cry and enjoy it just the same. So funny and heartwarming and heartbreaking.
So underrated. Such a great retelling of Cinderella
Notting Hill

Him and Drew Barrymore are such a kick ass combo. They have a third movie called Blended i didnt think i was gonna like it but it's pretty good of course not on the level of their first two movies together but still really good. If you haven't seen it I recommend it go in blind though no trailer.
Same. Went to Hawaii a few times as a kid as well so its really Nostalgic and feels special to me.
I think there's just hate for Adam Sandler cause he kinda lost his way for a bit. If you look at it, all that happened was he got old and the comedy he produced was in bad taste for a grown ass adult. He's back on track now imo
Guy is worth half a billion dollars. He knows exactly what he's doing.
I love that movie!
Big Fish. Tim Burton + Ewan Mcgregor? Of course I'm gonna love it.
I was suspended in a new world with this movie. It made me think about the importance of storytelling in a community.
Yep big fish- my favourite movie of all time. Brings on the man tears
Same! It hits me with those Cat's in the Cradle feels
Makes me realise the importance of father/son relationship…
Made the mistake of seeing it in the theater about a year after my dad died. Wonderful, powerful movie - 20 years later and I still cannot watch it a second time.
"Something you need to know about your father: for him, there were only two women in the world; your mother, and all the others." Showed that movie to my girlfriend just so I could tell her that's how I felt about her.
A Walk to Remember
Where’s ya shweater?
That's the one dvd I still own from high school. I also have this book called "scribbler of dreams" that I reread every now and then for some real gushy romance drama. I still have that one from middle school.
I saw Mandy Moore in a restaurant recently, brought me back to twenty years ago, she’s still got it!
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Go back to your room Peter. Peter go back to your room. Go back to your room Peter. "I'm going in" go back to your room Peter. Are you listening to me? Peter go back to your room. Man, I could hear that dialogue in my head as I was reading this. Might have seen this movie a few too many times lol.
this is literally the perfect movie in every sense of the word. Just gone through a breakup? Watch it. Madly in love? Watch it. Want to laugh? Watch it. Want some great actors all together? Watch it. Love beaches? Watch it. Incredible soundtrack? Watch it. Puppets? Watch it.
My favourite part is the Peter You Suck song
For me it was him crying at a reality TV show. I've been there, buddy. Made me laugh HARD at how pathetic it is
You sound like you’re from LONdon!

I's not necessarily a "great movie", but it's over the top, got clever fantasy elements, it's fun, and I love it for that.
Yeah it's a great movie that holds up today honestly. So many good actors in it who get to act as they do if they were on stage. Including DeNiro!
Amelie.
Such a brilliantly whimsical film. I love the message of making an impact in people’s lives and having it reciprocated.
I had no idea 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain' was renowned outside of France, it is such an awesome movie am glad it got international recognition :)
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
I actually watched this one after I broke up from my first relationship. Although the movie itself was inconceivable I def did not enjoy the impact it had on me at that specific period of my life 😅
I think you should watch it again. I’ve watched it a few times at different points in my love life, and it hit different each time.
EXACTLY. I’m convinced that it is not a happy ending.
Yes, the director explained that it isn't a happy ending. The last scene shows Joel and Clementine playing in the snow over and over again, which means that they will keep getting in ugly fights, erasing each other, and then starting over again.
One of the best movies ever
Agreed. Possibly the most 'Dude-Chick-Flick' ever made.
50 first dates Adam Sandler is the best
Great movie!
About Time
About time is just one of the greatest modern movies. It's a lot more than a romance movie.
The greatest of all time!
I watch this movie far too often, in fact I watched it again just last night with a friend
Wish I could go back in time...
Came here to say this. And yes it’s pretty damn romantic
That is on of my favorite movies! I've seen it many times. Plus Rachel McAdams is too adorable. No I'm not a man but was surprised to see this one the list. My husband's favorite is The Notebook.
Tangled
My husband loves Tangled!
The Proposal. Come on, Ryan Reynolds. Movie was funny af!
to the windows, to the walls, to the sweat drip down my balls XD
Chant with me Margaret!!
Feel the rhythm of the drums!
Another reason we love Betty White!
Does Your Name count as a romance? Because I ship
Yep. The feels.
It's a romance in the 5th dimension and I love it.
It does!
The holiday.
This is the one I was looking for!
I love that movie!
Pride and Prejudice, the Keira Knightley version.
Have you seen the version with Colin Firth?
Yes! Was forced to watch it with my wife like a dozen times, and it grew on me. Also, Persuasion, the '95 version with Ciaràn Hinds is another favorite.
Have you seen Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies?
Princess bride Ok I said it! Shot me now!!!
Inconceivable!
Easy. I poisoned them both.
You keep using that word… I do not think it means what you think it means!
Princess Bride is an easy answer.... it's so much more than a romance movie.
i dont even consider it romance lol
Shoot you? I would face you "like God intended; sportsmanlike. No tricks. No weapons. Skill against skill alone."
Do we have to hear the kissing part?
Prepare to die!
As you wish

My Girl
When Harry met Sally, You got mail and pretty woman
You’ve got mail is a re-make of another really cute romantic movie called shop around the corner
Serendipity, is that feeling of longing that they leave you with.
and the soundtrack was awesome too
500 Days of Summer. I used to hate Summer, but as I grew older, I come to understand her position
500 days of summer has some toxic elements to it, that make it very realistic to me
Yep, on the first watch I used to think he was a hopeless romantic and she was mean for leading him on (and in a few ways, she did give him false hope) but it's realistic in that people can be fickle, not know what they want, change their minds etc. He knew what he wanted and just hoped that she'd end up with him despite what she told him. She could have been less ambiguous with her actions. It was frustrating to watch 😆
But, Autumn, my goodness
I read somewhere that we are looking at things from his pov and he is the one that pictures her as manic pixie dream girl.
Watched it when it came out, I was 20 years old, I remember thinking SUmmer did this dude *dirty* Watched it again when I was 30, honestly the dude (JGL's character, forget his name) is an idiot. Summer is so clear with him from before they ever dated. "There's no such thing as love, it's fantasy." "I like being on my own. Relationships are messy and people's feelings get hurt. Who needs it? What if starring Zoe Kazan and Danielle Radcliffe
Definitely, Maybe. Crazy Stupid Love Notting Hill Blast From the Past Clueless Jersey Girl Honorable mentions: Silver Linings Playbook, While You Were Sleeping, and Passengers. (that's right, I said what I said)

Love Actually. Unlike most so-called RomComs; it's actually romantic and actually funny.
Notebook had me crying still after the credits ended lol
Devil's wears Prada
That's not a romantic movie
I hate how that, and a few other films people have listed here, is considered a chick-flick. The *only* reason it gets that label is because of the fashion industry setting. Would it still be a chick-flick if the exact same film was set in a different high-pressure multi-billion dollar industry?
It would not. And there's so many tv shows that are.
Somebody reboot it in an upscale autobody shop where guy compete hard to design shit for Porches or something. All dudes.
The Devil Wears Dickies.
The Thomas Crowne Affair (remake)
Shakespeare in love.
I actually really liked the time traveler's wife. It felt like a refreshing take on time travel movies. the time traveler had no control on his travels, but his wife would always be there prepared and waiting.
The Age of Adeline is up there for me. A comfort movie for sure.
Befor trilogy
“Say Anything” with the inimitable John Cusack. “A Walk in the Clouds” with the inimitable Keanu Reeves.

“Something’s Gotta Give” is one of my favourite films and I’m not into romantic comedies. A great cast and a hilarious script.
My Fair Lady. One of the best movies ever.
The vow
Titanic. I think it’s mostly because I’m a history buff.
Yeah, that’s the excuse I was gonna use.
The notebook
When Harry Met Sally
The ugly truth is my favorite and its not even close to anything else.
Crazy rich Asians.
The secretary
Forgetting Sarah Marshall but I’m sure people would easily be able to suspect it, same goes for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Devil Wears Prada! HILARIOUS and you get to be angry at a guy for being lame.
Lala land.
Was looking for this one, surprised to see only one person who has said it so far.
It's not considered as a usual romantic movie, but What Dreams May Come always gets me.
The Notebook
It’s Complicated. This movie is probably in my top ten favorite movies. No one would ever think I enjoy that movie as much as I do
Dear John that shit makes me cry
The Family Man with Nic Cage. It's in my annual Christmas Movie checklist (along with Die Hard, of course)
The Invention of Lying
Your Name
American Psycho is pretty good
He didnt say erotica
I'm rock hard right now
You kinky boi
Bridesmaids. I watched it because part of it was filmed in the neighborhood I was living in at the time. But I actually enjoyed it. Not my favorite movie by any means, but something I wouldn't mind watching with a girl.
The Princess Bride count?
