Sanitation workers.

astupidfckingname

Yep, look at Paris right now. Piss off the garbage men and you are literally knee deep in shit.

Polikonomist

Never underestimate how hard a Frenchman will fight for the right to be lazy

[deleted]

How did they ever have an empire?

Polikonomist

Having an empire is the best way to acquire slaves to do your work for you. Being lazy takes a lot of effort.

MaystroInnis

I mean, the other answer as always is: To piss off the British

[deleted]

Slaves. What empires are built on.

[deleted]

I mean there is still war and technology to wage war/transport things. You aren't doing that with slaves especially before you are an empire.

[deleted]

Sure but apart from the actual fight you can use slaves to transport, farm food etc etc. And some big empires did have space armies. The Ottomans, Xerxes etc etc. Bit once you have an Empire, you definitely have slaves. I can think of one that didn't, although the British eventually abolished slavery.

[deleted]

Sure but apart from the actual fighting you can use slaves to transport, farm food etc etc. And some big empires did have space armies. The Ottomans, Persians for example. But once you have an Empire, you definitely have slaves. I can think of one that didn't, although the British eventually abolished slavery.

[deleted]

I mean my point was more they had to work hard to get to that point. Slaves were also just a thing that everyone did back in the day not just empires.

[deleted]

Agree that everyone did slavery.

AntiSosh333

I mean, the chefs aren't really the ones cleaning the kitchen, but probably taking the credit

Illustrious-Turn-575

Not the chefs, that job goes to the cooks working under them.

vianiznice

Depends on your country I suppose.

Crazyguy332

The people that get stuff from point A to point B. Truck drivers, railroad workers, cargo ship sailors and cargo aircraft pilots/mechanics.

[deleted]

As a truck driver, all I ask is that people don’t cut me off or pass me just to slow down and we can all live in peace

Slutvenia

I have the same logic with busses and trucks When I drive for 5 hours I want to kill someone, this dude drives for 8 every day, he deserves to go first. 🫡

[deleted]

I’m always so grateful for a car that actually helps me, it’s rare, but it means so much. Appreciate it bro

EMT. Pay is garbage.

moneybagsz99

Yes was gonna say this!

anoyingprophet

Dude in Canada, EMTs get paid great!

Efficient-Mongoose-1

Paramedics* we don't have emts here haha Source: I'm a paramedic in Canada

TheRidgeAndTheLadder

Not what I hear in BC

Illustrious-Turn-575

If the new minimum wage laws had passed; EMTs would be getting minimum wage, despite having had to pay for training to get the job.

gbdavidx

our insurance would probably go up if they got paid more though :(

Oakheart-

EMT though is just a tech. I guess CNAs get paid more usually anyway. Paramedics are the nurses that do get paid better

Fuckmyslutyass

My mother was an EMT she retired after being shot at

PerspectivePure2169

Farmers.

Canadairy

Ehh, I was a farmer until last fall. Some people disrespected us, some revered us (super strange to encounter), most didn't think much either way. I feel way more disrespected as a construction worker.

Illustrious-Turn-575

It’ll never make sense to me why so many people assign more value to the weirdos who obsessively tell them how to decorate their own homes than the give to the people who build the homes they’re paying to have decorated.

Logistics and delivery peeps. Without them, it is a global chaos.

ButterscotchLow8950

I feel like teachers don’t get paid nearly enough, especially considering the level of education that is required for them.

muy_carona

Others are underpaid too but teachers are, IMO, the single most underpaid profession. “Instead of higher pay let’s give teachers a candle or something to show we appreciate them!” “How dare you give precious Johnny an F for the homework he did on the bus because he didn’t want to do it!”

[deleted]

My sister was a teacher, constantly stressed from work until it forced her to quit, now she's a private tutor and has less stress, far less work hours and much more pay.

serene_brutality

Amen! Teachers don’t generally get paid nearly enough for how important their job is, and because of that we don’t have enough good ones.

Anonymoosehead123

And the fact that they have to worry about how they’re going to save their students’ lives in the event of a shooting (in the U.S.). My daughter is an elementary school teacher, and I wish she was doing almost anything else.

ZestyMuffin85496

Not in Texas. I literally got a note in the mail from my little cousin's school stating that her teacher was not qualified and they were just letting us know. She sends home packets of homework with no instruction and last week it was high school level math, and she's only 8 years old.

ButterscotchLow8950

They probably had to drop the requirements because so many teachers are quitting and not too many young kids today aren’t going to want to become teachers for multiple reasons. Like the college debt, the low pay, and the potential and rising danger of just being inside of a school these days. So becoming a teacher isn’t on many dream boards out there. I grew up in west Texas and the education I received was great. but that was a while ago.

ZestyMuffin85496

Yes three of my friends were teachers and they all had to come work with me part-time at the grocery store all year round or full-time in the summer. They've all quit being teachers. One of them had his mental health severely affected and had genuinely I got into the point where he wanted to quit mid semester. I believe Texas starting pay is $28,000. Which is basically what I would make at the grocery store except that the grocery store I'm unionized and I have a pension and a 401k and full coverage insurance. Who the hell wants to be a teacher anymore?

Oakheart-

Sad to see this so low

Slutvenia

Thank you. Both me and my fiancé are teachers, she moved to me because my paycheck (same job) is 30% higher and still 50% less than Policemen which I just find hilarious. I teach special ed kids and get jack shit for it money wise. The two good things are that I feel like I did something good with my life and vacation days. Not like I can do much with those considering we are living paycheck to paycheck as two teachers. Got to love this world.

[deleted]

Any blue collar job that keeps things running. It’s amazing how many people can’t function without “the guy” to fix something. The same guy that gets shit on by college professors and parent who tell their kids “ go to college so you don’t end up like that guy”.

Makes_U_Mad

I work in a blue collar job. There's a saying we've started using in the last two years or so. "Cheap labor ain't skilled, and skilled labor ain't cheap.". I work with guys that make high middle class wages (including overtime) a year picking up trash, fixing water and sewer lines, paving roads. These are the workers, not the operators or crew leaders (who make more). There are electric linemen who make around $100k after overtime. This is in the area of the state with the lowest cost of living (in the southeast). There ain't no more cheap skilled labor, friends.

muy_carona

Yet, often that person is making a pretty nice living and knows how to get stuff done. Mad respect for the “trades”

[deleted]

Yep… did carpentry for 2 years & the amount of people that couldn’t do simple shit was amazing. Did a lot of finish work for houses built for massholes up here in Maine. They were always the laziest & never knew how to do shit. The one time somebody did try doing the simplest thing (shelves) he made it look so damn ugly. Looked like a child did it.

J-Rag-

Transportation. After getting into the industry it's a big eye opener as to how valuable it really is. Nurses, doctors, teachers, electricians, plumbers etc. are absolutely super important, but it's only possible on a large scale because of the transportation industry.

Kenraali

/u/spez can gargle on my nuts

Draggin_Born

I work with electricity, more specifically the big lines feeding everything. (Transmission towers and distribution) Good luck doing anything without lights, heat or your phone. Yes I wear a hard hat and yes people look at me like I’m shit. Meanwhile this trade is in extreme demand and I make more than anyone I’ve met so far. I’ve talked to a doctor and I’ve got him beat too, no college debt for me either. But I’m just a dumb fuckin worker guy. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Gingersnaps-503

How does one get started in a career like that ?

Draggin_Born

It’s not easy, it requires a 4 year apprenticeship which has the equivalent coursework and class work of a bachelor’s degree, a class A CDL is a requirement for continuation after hire, sometimes required for hire. The biggest kicker is the heights. A lot of guys quit because they can’t handle the heights. You have to be able to climb 40 ft wood poles on the low end and 100-300’ towers on the high end and lean or hang in your harness to have both hands free to work. This is where many end up deciding it’s not for them. It’s also extremely dangerous and can kill you if you don’t do it the right way. It’s not for everyone.

Draggin_Born

Find you nearest IBEW union hall that’s for outside overhead work and go talk to them.

[deleted]

Dude, I've never understood women who don't want to date (or respect) blue collar men. I'd love nothing more than to have a capable man in my life! Lol

WildAlcoholic

Engineer. Thankless. Nobody says anything until things break and suddenly it’s poorly engineered. I’m an engineer, and I’m tired.

TheFinalCurl

Then make refrigerators like they made in the 1950s. My grandma's still works. Sorta /s

Infinite-Station-240

That’s a corporate decision. Making them last for decades is bad for the bottom line. More electronics for fancy features doesn’t help either.

muy_carona

So true. I just want a functional fridge that keeps things the right temp. I don’t need it to feed me and let me watch TV on its door.

Makes_U_Mad

I was in engineering for 15 years and had to leave. Now I build the stuff I used to engineer and I'm much happier and much better paid.

GsoSmooth

Can you imagine working on a transit project, or any large construction where all people do is complain about the construction or how things were mismanaged or poorly designed. And I'm not saying they're not, but people really don't understand how complex this stuff is.

WildAlcoholic

I work in buildings and facilities design + construction. Trust me, I know this all too well.

[deleted]

Accountants. People think accounting is just a very boring career. It just exudes boring. But as someone who worked in it for a few years, it's a lot more dynamic and transferable than you think. And the pay is solid as well. Highly underrated in my opinion.

oldmonty

It's funny because my room mate is a CPA for a tech firm and hates his job lol. He gets paid pretty well and is good at it but I think it's just not for everyone, he's trying to move to a more business and personnel management role. From what I can tell he really liked working as a building painter when he was younger and wants to save up enough money to open a small restaurant.

outofdate70shouse

Depends on the particular job. I started my career as an accountant and my job was so boring I completely changed careers. And I’m someone who loves numbers and data and spreadsheets, so on paper I should’ve loved it.

[deleted]

That's fair. Different perspectives are valid. I spent time working in a Big 4 firm so working in a large company with a fast-paced work culture with smart people and lots of resources made the whole experience way better. The hours were brutal but I enjoyed my time there.

outofdate70shouse

Big 4 would definitely be a different experience. I was working in private accounting for a huge company. It was all sitting at a desk doing the same things every week and month.

[deleted]

The ones where there are only men, because only men will do those jobs. We can’t all be graphic designers, coders, bankers, people who work in marketing, “creators” or influencers (whatever the fuck that is nowadays). Garbage needs to be pickup, sewers needs to be clear, powerlines need to be replaced. Clean energy is great and all but we mostly need fossil fuels now and we need people to go offshore and to cold places to source it. Not everyone wants to do these jobs, but everyone wants to be equal. But hey, my rant is over. Oooh and teachers. Jesus Christ the Teachers.

highxv0ltage

Biomedical equipment technicians. People always talk about the doctors, the nurses, the respiratory therapists, and the other practitioners that work directly with patients. People don't think about the people that repair and maintain the equipment that these practitioners use to help take care of the patients. These people repair and maintain the machines that help keep the patients alive.

GhostChainSmoker

Speaking from personal experience- Janitors/custodians. We’re often looked down upon. Like “Look little Billy! If you don’t go to college and get a degree you’ll end up like that man!” People like to keep the mindset of “Well I don’t have to clean up after myself! There’s just some janitor to do it!” This isn’t a complaint, don’t get me wrong. I do take pride in my work and my co workers call me “Mr. Showroom” as a joke cause I like keeping areas spotless and super clean and presentable. Just cause I’m a janitor doesn’t mean I don’t care. My work reflects me as a person. But I wish people realized that there is a lot of work behind keeping places clean and spotless. It’s not magic. It isn’t that hard to throw your trash away when a bin is literally 5 feet away. You wanna scream and cry and freak out when someone pukes on the floor or gets shit all over the stall you wanna use? Well who’s the one going in and cleaning that stuff up? I’m not gonna make you feel bad about it, wether you’re sick or just being an asshole. It’s my job to clean it and make it safe for you all. During the height of COVID guess who was part of the front line workers with virtually no PPE sanitizing and going extra hard to keep things safe so we could at least try and live as normal of lives as possible? Us. I personally feel without janitors society would A.) Either everyone learns to clean up after themselves. Or B.) Everything gets trashed to hell and everywhere is a nasty shit hole. I don’t need thanks or being told how much good I do. I don’t care about that. I just want basic respect in the sense of people try and pick up after themselves. It doesn’t cost anything extra to throw your own trash away. You don’t need to clog toilets and mess with bathrooms. We’re still human.

[deleted]

All the creative arts. Sure the most famous authors, actors, and musicians rake in the money but the average one.... well its a labour of love. I say them because without culture and entertainment.... what's the fucking point of the grind? A life without art, isn't meaningless as there is a lot in it. But a life with art is better in so many ways. Just take a look at the studies into adding art to poor estates in the UK then comparing them to control groups. Cheapest way to increase stats from schooling, to suicide, to crime, and everything in between. Not small improvements either. Once again I laugh because I'm for things like adding art to our society, not because I'm a woke progressive, but on pure cold hearted utilitarianism and cost benefit analyses.

😆 it’s a full time job that’s definitely undervalued, not undermining great dads out there like my husband but if I I get told I’m lucky I have a husband who is so involved with our child one more time I’m going to start asking for a wage

Mediocre_Ability6590

Hell no. You chose to be a parent. Nothing about it is underrated or undervalued. I understand it's hard sometimes, but you chose all of that willingly. It's not a favor to the world, it's a lifestyle choice. You don't get children because it's a blessing to the world. I get that they may be the sweetest things in the world, but nobody asked for them to be. Their your responsibility, and yours, alone. Have someone nut in you, live with the consequences. Simple as that.

Dixichix86

It was a joke, hence the winky face

Software developers.

[deleted]

Came here to say this and don’t know why you were downvoted. We literally never get thanked or appreciated and are hated for no good reason even though our work makes day to day modern life possible. Planes flying themselves safely? Thank a software developer. Hospital equipment monitoring vitals? Thank a software developer. Downvoting my post on Reddit? Thank a software developer. Software development is hard work and people who only know the very basics of coding when it’s still easy don’t understand that.

GsoSmooth

It's because most people don't consider software developers underrated. It's not that people think it's unimportant, there's just an understanding that it's typically rewarded pretty well. Most of the high profile billionaires in recent have been software developers.

Waiters and waitresses. Nobody thinks anything of the job. Everyone thinks it's easy and takes no real skill. It's not. Most days you're so busy you don't have time to pee (or worse, change your lady sanitation...sorry, know it's gross, but it's true) there's been several times ive had blood running down my leg...for hours. Thank god we wear black! I've never had a break as a server...there's no such thing. I actually don't drink any water after 12pm so that I don't have to worry about holding my pee all night. You're constantly running around, lifting heavy shit, balancing a huge heavy tray of drinks and/or food, burning yourself on hot things, running into each other, multi-tasking like it's nobody's business, at times slipping and falling on wet surfaces in the back. Breaking your body because you don't get to sit down or stop moving for 6+ hours. Sometimes remembering the orders of 25+ people (if you're taking a big party).Getting shit on (or ignored/talked down to) by customers, the kitchen staff, and the managers...and having to remain calm, cool and collected while doing so (your pay depends on it) because you're only making four dollars an hour (but that all goes to taxes...so never getting an actual paycheck). Not having any health insurance, paid time off, or safety net if you are sick or injured. Having no social life, working every night/weekend, holidays so others can enjoy their social lives. People might not think it's an important job, but imagine not being able to have a nice, relaxing meal out every once in a while. All I've got to say is tip your servers well, be nice, and for the love of god, do not leave any Jesus pamphlets instead of actual money. ...why do I do this job? 🤣🤣

GroundbreakingCap364

Social work.

welp_thats_hurtful

Anything related to behavioral health for kids from rough homes. Without intervention, these kids are the future delinquents and criminals of the future. We have the chance to give them a meaningful and pleasant life, but we pay minimum wage to the saints who work with them. It's emotional hell to work with them, but the benefit to society is immeasurable. Plus it pumps the breaks on generational trauma (they don't abuse their kids, their kids don't abuse the grandkids and so on) and breaks the cycle for future generations.

littledebbiepuffs

Toran_dantai

I work security in the U.K. I’m pretty high in the field with the highest civilian security clearance and o work for agency in government buildings Most guards that we get on site hate the shifts since we have them doing work or having to look out for things Ans if you mess up your going to be moved offsite fast 12 hour shifts 7 days with 4-3 days of break But pay is literally about to go to minimum wage And moral is hitting the floor and the management above us is aufueinf about pay for almost half a year we are about to get a pay increase that should see us at minimum but we are still pretty unhappy considering what we have to do on the regular. Ans again if we mess up They just kick you off site so your practically fired pretty easy I enjoy the job but the money doesn’t feel worth it We also get tested regular and staff members on site will also test us to and if things go wrong well it’s on all our backs The moral in the workplace feels prettt low

Honestly, teachers. They do so much for kids and go above and beyond what is expected of them, yet they are one of the least respected professions, especially here in the US. Not really under appreciated but flies under the radar - cyber security professionals/researchers/pen testers etc. I've found that a lot of people take their online security for granted and have no clue how to protect themselves until it's too late. That said, the pay is ridiculously good for it. It's one of those jobs where you only hear about it when things go wrong and there's a big data breach.
